All hail the new thread!!!!

Usual rules apply, but just to try and keep things fresh, I'm going to suggest that random weekly themes can be used. So for instance someone might say that Transport is the theme for a week.

This doesn't mean you can't throw in another photo, because it isn't the theme.

Or the theme will be black & white photo's. Somat like that

Just so long as it doesn't conflict with the monthly photo comp.

Hope everyone's happy with that?

Now get shooting :D

I really don't like the theme idea. I thought the thread was was so you can post up a photo from the day that just reflects what you've been up to, where you've been, something that catches your eye. Sometimes it might be an image that's taken you a while to set up with lights and a tripod, or just grabbed an image on your phone as mine often are. If you introduce a theme it becomes prescriptive and we already have that for photo of the month. I think it will kill it.

maviczap
01-01-15, 07:36 PM
Its not compulsory, you can still post up ANYTHING you want, and it's going to be completely random, no prescriptive dates.

It might be for instance, just post up a B&W photo if you can today or tomorrow. If you don't then no problem.

Otherwise I'm just going to let it run like it has done, I've no intention of competing with the other Monthly photo comp

Very jealous of those Richie, hope to call by there when I was up in Haltwhistle but didn't get the chance in the end. Looks great at night!

Mav: I'm liking the idea of themes or topics, just throw one up and see what others take on the idea is, given that it's informal there can be none or multiple topics "active" at any time. doing it as an option in the photo a day thread could work well, it wouldn't work as a separate thread though IMHO.

We've been doing it anyway really, one takes a picture of the moon and others follow, this just makes it easier to declare open season on a topic rather than risking treading on peoples toes.

Liking the christmas decs Mister_C, although the broken stripes in the trees always bug me, same in Glasgow too.

My thinking was just to give this years thread a bit of an occasional challenge and impetus, to make you guys go out and take a picture.

The very first photo a day thread was a challenge, as it forced everyone to post a picture a day, every day for a year.

But sometimes that was a bit too much of challenge for me as the OP, to ensure the thread kept on track.

By introducing a random challenge once in a while might give this years thread a bit of freshness?

Took this last night. I am trying my hand at long exposure. Really pleased with the outcome. I put it into Photoshop to crop the top & it's knicked all of the EXIF data, bit cheesed off really.

Like it L3nny, the cat looks like something out of Critters :-)

Mister_C, there will likely be an option for it somewhere, Lightroom has a tick box and drop down on export to say do nothing or do something with the exit and if something then refer to the drop down for options. Might have come into play if you use Lightroom to pass it to PS or if you're just in Photoshop then there is likely a similar thing on save in there, it does support exif so it's doing something it thinks you want :-)

mister c
03-01-15, 01:43 PM
I don't seem to use Lightroom, I'll have to give it a go. I just cut & pasted it with Photoshop, then saved the cut picture. I need to learn a few more things with these photo processing programmes lol

Brettus
03-01-15, 02:47 PM
Ah! cut and paste is likely going to lose the exif, as it'll be doing well to copy all the data in the images. If you're wanting to take the file into another program to do something with it, save it back to the hard disk then open that file in photoshop as it'll have all the extra stuff stored in the base file.

Workflow is a refining process, you'll get used to what you use for what bits and what you like to use. I mention lightroom as it is what I use but Bridge works and there are plenty of decent other software options out there. I just talk about what I know. Decent software makes life easier. have a search of youtube, see how others work and pick the bits you like.

I like lightroom as it lets me do pretty much everything photoshop does (including spot removal and healing) crop, rotate, RAW processing (white balance, sharpening, contrast etc) but also when I import the files to it, it stores them by date, I just give it some tags (like "night shot" or "moon" and perhaps a location) I can browse through them all or search based on any of the words I've entered and I never have to need to know where the files are actually stored, it just handles it.

Just my waffle of course but it might help.

What a f'ing great tree Richie. Love it.
Haven't decided whether the grass in the second shot helps or hinders the shot. Think it'd be a bit boring without it, despite the lovely colours.

L3nny, that does look a bit freaky. I'd be inclined to watch that, certainly don't turn your back on it. If we've not heard from you for a few days, we'll send out a search party. :-)

Ah! I was going to ask what you used given you do it professionally too, but the thought went out of my head before I hit the post button :smt120

I know a few orgers have tried Lightroom after hearing it mentioned but not all got on with it so it isn't for everyone but after a few videos on features and how to use it the benefit of it being my one stop shop for practically everything made it my favourite.

I'll see if I can dig out some of the videos that helped get the basics to see if they help anyone else out.

Richie, love that first one, I'm compelled to take a stick to those individual scraggly nettle stems and clear them out of there but then it probably wouldn't look natural, they just make it a little cluttered. Liking the composure and light though, great shot.

Have just got myself an 8 inch tablet for my camera bag (honest) and the tree comes out wonderfully on that via Flickr.

Talking of tablets, has anyone tried the Photoshop app for android? I will be getting a USB OTG cable and card reader for my birthday in a couple of weeks and may well try it. The tab (Galaxy Tab 4 8 inch) is for reviewing shots while out and about on a bigger screen now that my near sight is getting pants. Will do a write up at some point but any experiences from the org in the mean time?

I'm only really going to be using it for viewing raw files so not too worried about adding or tweaking things. The extra features the PS app are a bonus of course. Other recommendations based on experiences would be great.

Went to see the latest in the line of 'Worlds Biggest Container ships' arrive at Felixstowe today.

Full of your Tv's, Ipod's, and other consumer goods, some possibly not the real McCoy ;)

There are bigger ones in the pipeline & its a big game of oneupmanship, ie my ships bigger than your ship.

If all the containers were laid end to end, they would stretch 72miles!

Pretty they ain't

Slightly older than Maviczap's big boat ;
Post for a five - barred gate:
only 6 more bits needed and job's a good'un:
Matching post with upside-down 7-shaped holes, and the 5 bars

Yes, it is big, the photo's don't really give an impression of its true size. But each of those 40 foot containers on deck is what ONE hgv carries. The crew use bicycles to go along the passageways to get from one end of the ship to the other, especially as the engine room is seperate from the accommodation block.

The main engine is an impressive lump of metal.

I love these old trackways. We cycled a few in South Wales a couple of years ago and they had a wonderful atmosphere.

My guess is it's not a gate as we understand them but and an entry/ exit barrier...corresponding post would have 5 holes cut right through and poles slid through that sat in the holes in the post pictured.

Nearly right.
The opposite post has upside down 'L' shaped holes.
Each bar is slotted into the round hole and the other end into the end of the 'L' , moved across and dropped down to make more stock-proof.
Open the gate? Remove the bars - a twenty second job.
Break a bar? Go cut another one.
Will try to get a pic of an 'L' shaper.

Very jealous of the LHC, would love to visit, very cool shot too :-)
Mines rather pedestrian by comparison, getting packed for belated Christmas do in Devon tomorrow and decided to array my ties as I've got too many to view easily in any useful fashion.

Now I see why....

LOL, the bottom rows are all the old stock, I thought they'd show least but they stand out too much. The new ones I wear often are mostly in the top 4 layers. The camera doesn't do them any favours though :-/

I realised I was still wearing one (a snazzy yellow number :-P) and I found another lurking around, I need some decent storage for them, got two tie racks but only tiny ones.

Here's another four and a half bar gatepost.
I didn't break it - honest!
One end of each bar goes into the female hole, and the other slides along the 'L' shaped horizontal slot and drops down the vertical.

Cheers Puny - it all makes perfect sense now. I've never seen one like that before but I guess before hinges were cheaply available (as opposed to special order from the blacksmith) these were just the ticket. Last longer than a hinge too.

Mine for today. This little blighter was sat on the ruined tree near my bedroom window. Only had my compact nearby and he kindly waited for me to get it :).

Ps, why do you think it is broken, surely the top rail would just drop in from the top?

Broken or not, something would have to secure the top rail or the first animal that poked it's nose through the gate would have knocked it off.
