LoL. I already got the Sudbury camera - £3 at a boot sale with a 35-70 on it. Not tried it out though.
I contacted the seller about the OM2 that's local - might be interested but wish it was a 'n' rather than the one with the updated electronics.
My two packages arrived today. The Contina looks in pretty clean shape. Aperture blades all work smoothly, lens is clear, shutter seems to work at the different speeds. The ASA numbers are weird though. They go 80;160; 320; 640. How to set it with a 200? just guess?
The Minolta x500 also seems to be in good condition and working properly. A little bit of exposed brass on the top cover from the strap rubbing but that's all. The light seals definitely need replacing though. Optics in the 2 lenses seem very good; no scratches or fungus. And the 28mm is a Minolta (phew) with a Nikon cap on it. But there is a strange thing with the wide angle; it doesn't focus at infinity. I can look at something 15 metres away through the lens but the edges of the object don't meet up in the focus prism and the lens is at infinity and won't focus further. Any ideas on that one?
Flash is screwed though, with lots of corrosion in the battery compartment.
250 is the top. It says c.friedrich.munchen. Corygon-anastigmat f3.5 7.5cm. Have given it a good wipe down and unscrewed the inner rear element and cleaned. Only issue I can see it a small hole in the bellow near the film plane.
Yoko, no idea on the ISO setting but I am sure Johnny will know. Otherwise set as close to you film speed as possible. Most modern film should be able to handle it.

Good news Yoko! Yep set the ISO to the nearest, if in doubt go lower not higher. The tolerance on the shutter speed is 20-25% on a good day (accuracy not precision), and aperture can be as much as half a stop out on any camera anyway. The ISO dial setting combines with (most likely) the shutter speed ring to tell the meter how much light to expect. Thus if you set the ISO between marks it'll still work as you intend, the feedback to the meter is analogue, even though you can't set the shutter between speeds.
Interesting, what shutter is it Kenzie? The Corygon is a Cooke triplet it seems though not that common and probably one of the better ones. Pinholes can be sealed with liquid electrical tape, though I've never used it, or just plain old PVC tape.

Compur S shutter with flash sync, though most likely X - you can test it without film though, X was sometimes done as it is easier than M and flash bulbs will work on lower speeds anyway.
WTF is that contraption! Is the shutter leaf supposed to be bent?
I know. I thought it was bent so I was like, great, a duff camera. Quick search turned up another camera with the same bend so I guess it supposed to be like that. Rarely use a flash so it shouldn't be an issue.

How curious! Also have you seen this 322135054960 quite sorry-looking but ends 9am tomorrow and unless someone else wants it, I might have a punt to fix up and sell. Bit concerned about the bellows, looks like they've been stored that way. A replacement would be hard to sort out, maybe have to find a cheap Ikonta or Nettar and cannibalise it.
Take a punt. Is that a rangefinder? If so, its just topped my Zeiss list.
johnnyrod
09-06-16, 08:12 PM
Yes, I've got one already, same lens (Novar). The rangefinder is uncoupled so you use it to get the distance then set the scale yourself - it's just a scale-focus camera with a built-in accessory rangefinder.
Cool. If I had been paid then I would take a shot.

Indeed - watching that one.
Looking at sold prices, the Ikonta M is around the £30-40 mark, there are some higher but I don't know why. Hmmm
Yoko, Hobbycraft sell self adhesive foam that makes good lightseals. Used it in the Trip 35.
Were you already watching it?
yokohama
09-06-16, 08:47 PM
Some kind of self adhesive foam is next on my 'things to buy' list.
I need to learn to look at pictures more carefully too! The Olympus near me on Gumtree, despite having OM2sp documentation, is actually an OM2n. I only noticed that when I'd downloaded the pic and enlarged it.
Mave either of you guys got any idea about this vivitar wide angle? Maybe it's intended for close focus work as it focuses down to under 1ft. The distances on the focus ring are correct because I checked on 2 different cameras but then it goes from 7ft directly to infinity and infinity doesn't seem to be in focus. I've not seen that before.

Tricky one Yoko, if it just didn't have enough travel it would make sense - are you sure it's indicating infinity on the distance scale? Would be strange for it to focus close and be right but wrong elsewhere. Check the distance at say 1m, measure from the film plane not the mounting flange. Try again at 2m, 3m, see what you get.
Does that mean that you are going to go for it then Yoko? If making your own seals, I would recommend getting one of these as well http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/modelcraft-rotary-cutter-45-mm/614747-1000
Going to a car boot tomorrow, will keep an eye out for another Trip for your friend Yoko.

Yep, going to go and have a look at the Olympus this evening. I'm not sure what the extra lens is, only that it's a macro wide angle. The seller used it with an extension tube and the ring flash for detailed close ups of dental work.
If you see anything interesting at the boot sale Kenzie, let me know.
I ordered some seals from a Japanese seller. I was buying a new skin for a camera so just tagged the seals on. Maybe a little more expensive than Hobbycraft but the string ones are all pre-cut

I can't work this out. It's almost as if the focusing ring needs an extra 50mm of travel to allow it to focus at infinity when looking through the lens. I'll see if I can take a couple of pics to demonstrate.
Who did you buy from for the skin?need to retrim the fx-d at some point.

Hmm if the scale doesn't reach the infinity mark - does it manage that with the lens off the camera? If so the the innards may be bottoming in the camera somewhere - for longer distances, the lens needs to come back towards the camera. If it won't reach the infinity mark then could be something inside jamming it. does it have any sort of adaptor ring on it?

I just looked at it again with a measure. It's definitely out. According to the lens markings, min focus is 9 inches, but I have it about 6, Other readings are similarly out. The lens markings are higher than reality. 6 ft focussed ttl equates to higher on the lens mount. Then I can move the lens to the infinity marking but looking through, its not focussed and the focus ring needs more travel.
Glass or lens seems to be put of alignment. Maybe it's been taken apart and not reassembled properly. I don't know if it's an easy fix. No screws on the lens body but 4 on the base. Dare I?
johnnyrod
10-06-16, 12:05 PM
Sounds like someone's been at it,maybe taken the innards out of the focus helix but not put it back in the right place. Sounds like an easy enough fix once you can get into it. It's that or it'll only work across the range in which it looks sharp through the viewfinder.

I've got the back end off easy enough but that just gets me to the final lens and aperture mechanism. Not sure how to get at the focus ring internals though. Is that likely to be through the back or front?
johnnyrod
10-06-16, 01:24 PM
Probably the front. The front element might unscrew by hand, but you might need a strong grip on a very narrow rim via rubber tool. See of you can post a pic or two of it or a link to another one
yokohama
10-06-16, 02:21 PM
I've had a go at unscrewing it by hand - rubber gloves on - but no success.
This guy had the same problem. It's the same lens though an earlier model.

It's worth spending some time googling for "..." with "repair" on the end, where "..." is the name of the lens in its various forms. often you'll find it or something close enough. Looks from the small pic like you need to unscrew the front element with one of those big rubber cones, but it can be hard to tell for sure. I would also look under the rubber grip and see if there are any screws hidden by it.
I managed to carefully unscrew the ring on the Hanimex with a washing up glove and a can of spray.
Wonder what the outcome of Yoko's trip will be. Johnny, may be of interest for the bellows? 231970430164

Wow, he's not kidding about knowing nothing. They'd be rectangular ones I think, the Ikonta M yesterday was a 6x6. I gave it a miss after looking up some prices and the odds of getting cheap new bellows, only worth it as a keeper.
Tell me about it. Clearly doesn't realise half the camera is missing!

But this is something new..it's a Tamron Adaptall 2 90mm 1:25. I've not seen one of these before.
It's a big macro with an extension tube and seems to be able to focus at about 3 inches. I don't think I'll have much use for it but who would? Fly tyers? Modellers?
The ring flash attaches round the end of the lens to light up the subject.

Nice, you've been wanting one so am pleased for you. Interesting it has the shutter speeds around the barrel, I have a Pentax K2 like this, it needs work before I can use it. My Super A and MX have them on a knob where your exposure comp dial is - it's not nearly so friendly to change. f1.4 lens too, very nice. Looks good and clean too.
yokohama
10-06-16, 07:16 PM
Yeah. Very clean. It's been looked after. Both lenses - on first glance - look almost spotless too. The camera needs new lightseals and is missing the little button that covers the motordrive slot on the bottom, exposing the winding mechanism but I can cover that up.
I've also now got a huge metal case. Have to work out what to do with that.
Shutter speeds on the barrel and f stops at the end are confusing at first, but it makes manual mode much easier.

Do you think someone attempted a repair or clean and fluffed up putting it back together? Got nearly two rolls through the MV plus finishing off the Solinette and Zorki 10 as well as loads of others I haven't shot yet.

Have had a look a the Contina manual. The light meter is uncoupled i.e. no feedback from the shutter settings at all. You set the ISO then point the camera and wind the middle knob until the circle sits over the needle. Ignore the next part of the manual - yours doesn't have the hateful light value scale, just scales of shutter sped and aperture to choose the combo you want for the light you have. The meter doesn't have any sort of lens so won't be fantastically directional, but the main interference is sunlight so the flap is good in that respect. Set the shutter and distance, wind it on, SNAP! It's modern enough that you can change the shutter speed after winding on - unlike, for example, and old Certo folder. Yours doesn't appear to have the VXM switch, if that's the case then no self-timer. If you connect a flash and open the back, then fire the shutter while looking through it you'll find out if it's X-synchronised, which I expect it will be. If so you'll see light, if not you won't. Some people point the flash through the shutter to do this, it's a good way to be blinded though! The flash is way too short on any shutter speed to be visible if it's M sync. Ignore all the fannying around re. loading film, the Contessa manuals say the same (as I discovered after the third film), just shove it in in the usual way. Finally the "snapshot" setting aka Zeiss red dot is a simple way to shoot anything hyperfocally. Set the aperture to the red number (i.e.8 ), set the distance to the red dot (between 5 and 10 on the distance scale I think, from the ebay pictures), and you will then see from the DoF scale it'll cover most situations if you get the right shutter speed. The DoF scale is a bit enthusiastic by around one stop as ever though. Hope this clarifies it all.
Can someone help me wrap my head around something. My Solinette has a mark on the focus ring. The manual says if I use this and have the aperture between f8 and f11 I will have a dof of 7-22ft with a subject at 10ft and 22ft to infinity if the subject is at 35ft or more. Does this mean I will have sharp focus within those ranges?
That black om2 went for £46.
johnnyrod
10-06-16, 08:58 PM
Yep that's right, you should be able to set the distance on the lens and read the same numbers off the DoF scale. As I said above, at least on older cameras, the DoF scale is a bit wider than in reality i.e. if you set aperture to f11 then read off the distance range against the two f8 marks, depending on what you call sharp of course - I'd be surprised if you would be really happy at the far ends of the DoF you're supposed to have. Also remember that the DoF is twice as long behind the subject as in front - so with large DoF (small aperture) then err on the short distance side as it is less forgiving.
I have read so many manuals it's getting ridiculous.

Over 2 rolls of film in a day??? I think that's beyond my capabilities.
It's possible someone had the lens apart and didn't reassemble properly. As it is, it would be fine for close-ups and subjects up to 10 feet or so, but definitely not landscapes.
Post some pics up when you get them all processed.

If that black OM went for £46, I think I got a good deal. Just had a look at the flash on ebay, that should fetch 20.
johnnyrod
10-06-16, 09:39 PM
Yep that's right. The light value system was meant to simplify things but it didn't so died out. I'd check it against something like Pocket Light Meter or one of your SLRs as this type of meter can be off, or at least tend towards overexposure in bright lighting, which does sort of balance out the problem of stray light. I usually choose an outdoor scene so quite bright e.g. house wall, and an indoor one e.g. well-lit wall (large areas with even lighting), to see how they work across a range of values.
You won't get any use out of the M position, X for electronic flash/normal use, V for the self-timer, it often pops back to X by itself after being used. You can't use M and V in the same shot as the self-timer mechanism inside is how it counts the 20ms between firing the flash and tripping the shutter, FWIW.

Not a bad haul. Re. the Brilliant, I think some were a pseudo-TLR like the FulVue, and later ones were a proper TLR, so check what each price is for, if you haven't already. £3 is a bargain either way.
Good spot Johnny, hadn't noticed it was a focussing Brillant, mine isn't. The Chinon I bought is missing its self timer lever but I never use them anyway. Put a roll through the X300 today, up at Asda being developed. Really impressed with it. Its light and handles well. Can't wait to see the shots. Was standing by the side of the road taking a shot and someone drove past and screamed "S**t camera" as they went by. Some people are so small minded.
Self timer lever is broken on the KR-5. What are the chances of two broken in one day!
A few from the X300
Had to lower the exposure afterwards as it was a bit blown out.

Well I took the Certo rather further and took out the shutter blades and rings. I was frankly crapping myself, particularly when I found that a couple of springs were leaning against the inside of the casing I'd just removed, but it's a well-engineered piece of kit and went fine in the end. Swabbed a fair bit of muck out of there so worth it. Just have to refit the shutter to the camera, give the body a bit of a clean, and check the focus. Phew. Hopefully it'll sort out the faster speeds, but it's as good as it gets in any case.
Hope you took loads of photos for when you do mine!
johnnyrod
11-06-16, 09:27 PM
An actual bucket load. I'll have to re-test the shutter speeds again on the top two. Speeds from 1/2 to 1/100 were pretty well spot on (these are controlled by the escapement), but 1/200 was actually 1/120 and 1/400 was 1/180. Hopefully they'll be better now but it's as good as it gets - they run at full speed with no regulation.
It's well worth you trying the solvent bath like yer man in the link. It's pretty easy and could be good enough. As with a lot of these things, you just keep going until it's finally clean. I would resist operating the shutter while it's wet though - they can stick due to the suction between the blades, though I guess it'll release when it dries, if it sticks.
Don't think I'm that brave. I can fix some things but others don't go so well and I don't want to kill it. Is Yoko lurking? Or busy doing macro shots?

Macro shots?? You'll be lucky. The whole apparatus with the extension tube and mounts took me a while to put together. I had a little play with it and it focuses right down. you can practically fill the entire viewfinder with a bean. I don't think I'll ever use the thing so will probably sell.
Someone bought the Billy record on ebay today finally. It took a while.
Nice little shopping basket from the boot sale Kenzie. Nothing doing in any of my local charity shops unfortunately. What was the thing you mention with the exposure in the x300? I've fired half a roll through the x700. It'll be interesting to see what they are like.
The manual metering in the 300 is much more user friendly than the 700 though
It seemed a bit overexposed so I dropped the level in an editing program.

Light seals, or just over exposing in general? Only saying light seals because on all the Minoltas I have, there's quite a bit of movement when the back cover of the camera is pressed, which makes me think the string seals are well past their best.
Light seals do look a bit past their best but that would produce streaks rather than being overexposed. May well be interested in the macro lens depending on price. Also finally landed a manual adapter for the OM10. What are you going to with yours now you have the OM20 Yoko?
Some shots from the MV1 and Hanimex 135mm. Its a little soft wide open though.

I like the 'soft' on those. It gives them character and they're not just antiseptic reproductions.
I'll keep the OM10 for the moment, especially as I've got the adapter too. They are quite different cameras.Want to see what the B&W shots come out like. I've also got plenty of lenses now so they can share - can't remember if I mentioned but I picked up a Hoya 100-300 zoom in OM fit a couple of weeks back. Not very fast though; bright conditions use I think.
Playing around a little more with that Tamron this morning - it looks a great piece of glass. It's weird. It's like a zoom but not a zoom with a focus range of 15" to infinity. I think I'll hold on to it for now and try it out when I've fixed the OM2 light seals. The Japanese guy posted out the order yesterday so it should arrive towards the end of the week.
Thanks Yoko, I have popped more shots up on Flickr. That seagull came right up to me and pretty much demanded food. Kept it busy long enough to get a couple of shots. Found a camera for your friend yet?

Haven't found a compact for her yet but plenty of time.
I've just been out taking pics of water droplets in the garden - sad but true....
Thats cool. Especially when you get a good reflection in them.

A bit too dull for reflections but shiny leaf colours all the same. Very hard to keep the lens steady.
I was tidying up my cupboard and I found one of these - a leftover from the parents. Probably wouldn't be worth the eBay postage. Wonder what it does?

I had one of those. Didn't bother finishing the film as I got bored and donated it. If I happen across another I may pick it up. If I have a camera that relies on a selenium cell to set the aperture, and the film speed is set to like 12 asa, am I likely to get much response from it? My Auto Half was set to 12 asa and I am wondering if thats why they thought the meter was dead.

In a fit of pique I bought this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272264934441
Something caught my eye. I can't identify it but will have a go when it arrives. Pity about the cracked viewfinder but looks interesting. There is no mask for 4.5x6 but the film rollers look to be built in to the body so I could make a mask anyway.
I would say that it was a Balda of some description. The name is in the upper leather but can't make it out.

Looks like it's had an interesting life.
Will you use it or is it one for the collection?
Actually, I have a question... How to remove self-timer levers without breaking anything? Is there usually a screw or a clip underneath the lever?
yokohama

One of the Minoltas - the one for the new skin. I guess I'll need to remove the timer
Yeah, but which one? Usually they are held on with a screw.

Usually a screw but getting the cap off can be tricky. Odds are it just prises off but try googling if it's stuck.
I can't make out the embossed name, the seller sent me a close-up (he can't read it either, thinks it ends -lee, looks to start with an E). I mucked about with contrast etc. on that but it didn't make it any more legible. I spent ages with google-fu but still can't manage it from what I've got. Looks 1920s-30s so might just be a snapper or might be a bit more. If so then I'll keep it for interest, if not I'll check it out and (actually) sell it on. I don't know, it just called to me, like the Olympus, and the Certo.
I asked my wife and she thought it ended lee as well. It looks like a Certo or Balda. Will be good to see. Can you post up a pic?wanna try something.

It's the xd5.
Where do they usually hide the screw?
You need some needle nose tweezers to undo that. It may be left hand thread so be careful.

It's after I tinkered with it, but it's better than the original, I think
No joy, tried to invert the image. Its bugging me!

Can't help either. I tried internet image searches. That lens is on a few bellows cameras but none with a name that matches.
You might have to do an old school rubbing on tracing paper!

I tried the inversion too, and did even wonder about asking the seller to try that!
I still think its based on a Balda. They made quite a few cameras for other people like the Lisette for example.
Warning, link may contain images that some may find disturbing or fascinating :-P

That's pretty amazing. Wonder how long it would take to put it all back together if you mixed all the bits up.
I think I just found my new screensaver.
I think the ones they take apart are no longer working. Couldn't imagine doing it to a working camera.
Got another Fujica GER to replace the one I fudged the focus on, seen here with the GE which is a zone focus version

Is it a point and shoot? I see some settings on the lens barrel - distances?

Before it goes on ebay cos I have no space for it and Mrs Yoko is complaining ...
Is anyone interested in a very pro looking aluminium camera case? It came with the OM2.
Thanks for the offer but tight on space too! Might be interested in the macro lens though. The GE is zone focus bit the GER id a rangefinder.
Just popped a bid on this 311632709055

The plan is to keep the macro lens for the moment and try it out...see how I feel about it. Once I've put light seals in the OM2, I'll shoot a film through it using the macro at different ranges.
If I decide to let it go, you can have first dibs, but unfortunately it's not a cheapo.
