Contessa is the folder isn't it? I'd go with that, smaller and easier to pocket. If I had to take a medium format it'd be my Perkeo, but for you, probably the Mess Ikonta?

The Mess Ikonta still has bellows pinholes but I guess there's time yet. I've got a Super Fujica 6 folder which is good. The Contessa I'm thinking of is the rigid LKE.

Something small and pocketable is the best bet. A camera you can keep at hand rather than taking time to go rummaging in a backpack or through luggage. The ones you mention Johnny are unknowns to me but, depending on the patience of the ladz, something that's quick and easy to compose and shoot might be preferable.
I usually wear leathers and an Olympus XA3 (thanks Matt. ;)) is all my pockets will take. If it was me in your situation, I'd take my smallest lightest Minolta SLR with the 45mm pancake and buy a jacket with bigger pockets. :D

The folding Contessa is lovely but I need to lube the film transport. It's one where the film rolling over the sprockets cokks the shutter and advances the counter. It feels a bit stiff and when I tried to rewind the film it immediately broke off from the canister. Maybe it was the rewind, Kenzie does yours feel a bit stiff when you wind it on? Frame spacing was fine. It's easy to use once exposure is worked out.

A few test shots I took using a K1000 that belongs to my Great Aunt. Had it serviced as the shutter was failing to complete its cycle most of the time. Came back sparkling clean. Film is Silbera Pan 100 and I home developed it in Kodak D76. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220509/e8e05e501d7797a68a3345d1646823ee.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220509/0f8bc69f77f84d80274dee411c0fbec4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220509/8f7b5411be8582ac759ab1c00ec638e3.jpg

I had to look that film up, hadn't heard of it before but the results are good. Nice tones and looks to be fairly fine grain.
I've been devoid of inspiration recently but I went out walking over the Easter weekend and used up most of a 36 roll. Once that's finished, I'll have 3 colour films to process. Now Sandersons is gone, I'm stuck. I notice Analogue Wonderland has a developing service now. I wonder if they are any good?

Kenzie
09-05-22, 08:13 PM
AW aren't bad, but there are cheaper options. I use Snaps in Bournemouth and they only charge £3 a roll 35mm C41 and £5 black and white dev only. Been using them for years. They also do 110, 127 and APS. I developed this roll myself to save money as I had a backlog of black and white and seeing as I already have the kit, the stop and fixer it made sense to pop £10 for some D76.

It's the colour film I need doing and like you, I've got chemicals in the cupboard for black and white. I'll take a look at Snaps.
I'm not liking the Nikon FM very much. Finding it a pain to use and thinking of letting it go once the film comes out.

Yeah. a poke in the eye from the wind on is a pita. I have that with the FE but luckily my FM is one of the earlier models with the lock collar around the shutter button. The wind lever only activates the light meter.
What's your take on the K1000? I've never got round to using mine yet.

Kenzie
10-05-22, 07:12 PM
Not bad, my biggest gripe is lake of split focus assist, but tbh the viewfinder is so bright and clear that it wasn't an issue nailing the focus. I'm goi g to be running a colour roll through shortly.

Bit of a brick the K1000, nice it's all mechanical but not sure why they're so popular. I prefer a split circle too but I do find I obsess over perfect focus, I do that less without it. Interesting neither of you are liking the Nikons. Not done much myself, am with you on the lack of inspiration Howard. Still about half way through film no.1 in the Seagull TLR! Not shot much with anything. Was in the Peaks on Sunday but we took so much food that there wasn't much space for a big beast like that. Weather has been a bit unpredictable so we took some layers, all adds to the snail-like pack. Shame as I could have used it.

yokohama
10-05-22, 09:18 PM
Interesting what you said about the K1000 Matt. I think we talked about these before and we both have the HK made second version ... mine does have a split screen though.
My problem with the Nikon FM Johnny is that I'm obsessing too but over the exposure. The camera has 3 diodes for under/correct/ over exposure and rarely is the correct exposure diode illuminating on it's own. There's always two lit up indicating slightly under or slightly over, which makes me stop, start overthinking about the scene, the light, would it be better under or over exposed. It kind of slows everything down and sucks the joy out of taking the photo. While I prefer manual, mechanical cameras, I find the FE much more user friendly.

Kenzie

I'll have to double check what K1000s I have. I'm not sure what model the Aunt's camera is and I also have another tucked away. I recently sold a K1000 and I traded my KM against a Nikon F Apollo.

Coincidentally I picked up another K1000 tonight, second version (HK), with f2 lens and a Pentax zoom (maybe 35-80mm), and a chonky Osram C321 flash which I think is GN32, it's pretty bright. All working, needs a bit of a clean on the outside, slow speeds sound fine. Metering is 1.5 stops too dark but not tested the batteries it came with. Something to raise a few pennies at Christmas!

Kodak D76, had to reduce time from ten minutes to eight as I couldn't get the developer to 20c, so I devved it at 22-23c. Will definitely buy another roll or two.

i experimented with stand developing for the first time. Not a planned decision. Some idiot set the the EV compensation dial on the Nikon FE to 1 and a half stops under in mid-roll and forgot to reset it! :D I thought this was probably the best solution.
Exposures came out surprisingly well in the end and leaving the film to sit in 1% Rodinal for an hour is much more relaxing than developing and fixing in a hectic 15 minutes or less.
A few random shots - Ilford Pan 100.

Be interested to see what you think K1000 vs MX, not shot with the former but they're like one step back in the evolutionary chain, or that's how it feels, when you hold one. Still not finished the roll in my Seagull TLR, not really shot anything for a while.

I went out for a hike down the coast today and took the K1000 with me. It's chunkier than the MX, wind on is not as smooth and the shutter noisier. MX is silkier to use but as Kenzie says, the K1000 is OK. Vanilla and functional really; neither a pleasure nor a pain to use. Centre the needle, focus and click (more of a clatter). I like the match needle metering and luckily mine has split screen focus. There were a couple of occasions I could have done with a dof preview though.
I'll see how the pics come out but it didn't beg to become a keeper. For an older generation mechanical SLR, the Minolta SRT303 is hard to beat.

Got 4 sets of scans back today. I used Filmdev in Stockton on Tees. Just up the road from me although it took Royal Mail 4 days to cover the 24 miles distance. Taking into account postage out, processing and return of negs, it was the best option I could find. Scans look good overall at first glance and the cameras I used all seem to be working well.

Baby Speed Graphic .. another camera that I had to do an internet search for. Nice results. Seems like it's got a pretty good lens.

Looking good. Am off to Spain next month on a bike trip, debating between Konica S and Contessamat. The former has a better lens but is a good bit bigger and heavier than the latter.

Nice! Not jealous at all. Surely you have something more compact to take with you? Maybe an Olympus XA2 or similar?

Bit of a lumpt to carry around though. Made quite a few mistakes the first time using it, like not taking the darkslide out of the film back. Equivilant of not taking the lens cap off.

The Contessamat isn't too big, I have a Super Silette that needs servicing but is only a bit smaller and no meter. Or a folding Contessa! I like the viewfinder metering on the rigid Contessas, and it is quite directional, noticeably moreso than the Konica, as the cell is set in a little tunnel.

Oh yeah, you had a pile of those to repair if I remember.

I've seem them around the web. How is the build quality? It looks better than their full frame effort but fixed focus with f9.5 lens :(

The problem is printing. We can cope with the development but not scanning for printing.

Yeah, scanning half frame is really tedious work.

I'm just wondering why Kodak would bother and why we stock it. In fact we've not put them on display as we know the dev side will be a complete pain.

Who knows, maybe to bring attention to the brand again. Developing isn't the issue, its the scanning. Takes forever, especially if you put a 36 roll in by mistake.

Hey Howard, I am thinning my collection down a bit at the moment. Did you want the SRT back? If not I could always gift it on to anyone here interested in film photography?

You keep it or pass it on Matt. I have a couple of SRTs and have a battered 303 up for sale on ebay at the moment.
I'm trying to thin down a little too. I've got rid of a few cameras and extra lenses this year and only bought one.
BTW how are your Angel IIs doing? My rear is just about on the wear indicators now at 8000 miles.

Kenzie

On that note then, does any of you lurkers want to try out an SRT before I move it on? I haven't had many tires on the SV, but they are WAY better than the Contimotions I had before. Grip is good and inspires confidence. I'm no Rossi, but I can throw the bike around corners better than before.

I've been happy with mine too. Still plenty of life in the front so I'm planning to put another one on the back.

I'd definitely have another set.

The chemical side is no different but the fuji scanner we use will struggle unless the lads at work know how to setup the scanner.

Cheers. Looks like free postage too which makes it even better. Will need to check the website on the 23rd.
I bought only my 2nd camera of the year last week. Another SRT101 but only because it came with the Rokkor QF 50mm macro. Lens is nice but the camera doesn't work on the slow shutter speeds though the seller did part refund me for that.

Nice. I do have a Minolta f3.5 macro but the rear element has fungus damage.

Can't see any fungus in mine ... yet .. but lots of grime and dust. I'll try to clean it up tomorrow.
The Minolta wouldn't wind on or fire when it first arrived although I managed to free it up with a bit of work. I asked the seller if he checked it over before posting. His reply was, "Well, it was working 15 years ago."
I plan to take the top off to get at the slow speed mechanism and see if I can get it going.

Kenzie
28-10-22, 07:25 PM
Yeah, 15 years is quite a while lol. But like the Gameboy Micro I just got, worked when put away. But when I get it the battery is toast.

I managed to fix the Minolta. Removed the slow speed mechanism, cleaned it all out and put a tiny bit of oil on the cogs. All the sub 1/30th shutter speeds are working fine now. The biggest faff was repositioning the mechanism back in the camera.
Onto the lens now.

Good to hear Yoko. For some reason I keep getting my alerts turned off to this thread. Really annoying!I've booked one of my TLR cameras in to be serviced, shutter is sticky and running slow.

I've finally finished the roll in the Seagull TLR! An unknown small number of shots left in my Contessa LKE then will send both off for developing. Going to sell the Seagull at Christmas, also a K1000 and I'm sure there is another ready to go.
