No worries, I had uploaded the pics I had of the repair to Flickr but there were no captions and it turned out the order didn't make a lot of sense, so I tidied it up. Having a good weekend up there?

It was only a one night thing, a trial run for a future planned trip. Working out what we need, don't need etc.

I put an order in for the 127 film slitter. It wasn't cheap but no more than three or four store bought 127 rolls. At least this way I can get any film stock I want when I want. Plus I can make good use of my Yashica 44A and Baby Ikonta which don't get used much because of the cost per shot.

When are you off to Jockland? Check this out, maybe half way there, it's around 4 hours to Glasgow from here, prob about the same to Edinburgh

It won't be until next year or whenever this pandemic calms down. We have the destinations pretty much sorted, just got to iron out accommodation and routes.

I've decided to move on a few duplicates and unused parts of my collection. Anyone interested before I do? So far Pentax ME Super with 50mm f1.7, maybe a Pentax MX and lens, Olympus OM10 body, likely to be a Minolta XG-M and X300 (black paint model) Probably a Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim and its Superheadz clone. Likely to be a few more once I go through them this weekend. I have also found a pair of Canon FD to M42 adapters, three pentax to M42 adapters (no keys).

johnnyrod
16-07-20, 07:32 PM
I'd bag a PK/M42 adapter!

Kenzie
16-07-20, 07:34 PM
Unbranded or genuine Pentax?

johnnyrod
17-07-20, 07:34 PM
Dealer's choice! No rush, I still have the expired film to send you. I've got some random bits myself, mainly filters I think, I'm not sure people use them any more, except maybe UV but they're not, they're coloured ones for SLR-sized lenses. Speaking of filters, I'm trying out a yellow one on the Super Fujica as it has B&W film, see if I notice a difference.

I'll sort it out when I find something suitable to post it in. My rummaging also turned up a Vöigtlander VF135 rangefinder and a manual. Last eBay listings sold for between £60-£90. I might save up and put it towards a Leica. I found a load of lenses but they aren't worth listing, so will be donated. I did also find a Zeiss Tenax but the shutter is sticky, cannot be bothered to fix it.

johnnyrod
17-07-20, 09:54 PM
What sort of Tenax, the 60s one? I punted out a load of lenses, a while back, most of them went for about a tenner, but it adds up.

Kenzie

I've cleaned up and photographed some gear. I've got one of those fancy light tent things as I think a decent photo helps the listing. Just need to do some cropping, descriptions and get them on. Not sure whether to end it on a Sunday or a Thursday. What day do you think is best?

A few minutes after 9pm on a Sunday. You'll get a week of exposure and catch all the weekend folk with money burning a hole in their pockets.

I got impatient and set them running. Got a few watchers already. Oddly enough most are on a old Minolta Hi-Matic GF point and shoot.

Got a bunch of stuff listed. Just added an Olympus mju ii zoom 80 and in less that five mins had an offer, but going to let it run for a bit though. Had a low off on my ME Super that I declined. The Holga 120GN got a bid on almost straight away.

Well it had been too long so last night I messaged someone on an FB advert, there was one pic of a load of closed camera cases, and one pic of a Zeiss Symbolica. I got 21 pics back for various cameras, so went up there this arvo and found they had three large suitcases full. I had a trawl through, I had my eye on a Kiev 4, but not great and shutter problems, and there was a 35mm Stereo Graphic, decided against it, a Yashica D TLR, bit rough and something up with the focus. for £60 though I got a K1000 and a Ross Ensign Autorange 16-20:
https://www.instagram.com/p/CDCNYr1gCqm/
These go for around 130 on ebay. The K1000 just needs a check over, it's all working, and it'll pay for the Ensign. The latter is all working, bit sticky at slow speeds, and a bit of lens haze, but overall very nice. The arm with the rotating prisms doesn't fold right down like the Super Ikontas, but it turns out it folds just a bit in order to fold the camera up. So for 5 mins I though the RF didn't work, in the end I could see the prisms rotating, and accidentally moved the arm, then realised it just wasn't sitting in front of the RF spot window. Total luck finding this, I've been keeping an eye out from mindless optimism.

Kenzie
24-07-20, 08:29 PM
Bit different from the usual but you always were the rangefinder fan. You going to flip the K1000? I'm clearing a few at the moment and looking to put it towards something new. I was considering a Leica of some sort depending on what I make from this round, but even then it will need servicing and a lens. I'm kind of leaning towards a Nikon F or F2. Saw one with a 50mm f1.4 but it hasn't been relisted yet. Contemplating listing my T3 Super, I have a normal T3 but I'm not feeling the love, no point in having two of the same if I'm not going to use them. This would fetch a decent amount and allow a wider choice for the next buy. Got a spare Kiev 4M kicking around, shutter curtains have a slight bend but they run well and timing seems ok versus my 4AM. Just doesn't have a lens.

johnnyrod
24-07-20, 08:52 PM
Yep the K1000 should fetch a decent price on a bank holiday or at Christmas. Leica, expensive! Can't say I know much about them to be honest, they are definitely a cult thing.

Apart from the quality and the name I don't know if the experience would be any different from my Zorki 1e.

Cool! I had a go at a couple of CD players. We have a Teac mini system which we are going to sell on, but the CD player stopped working a while ago. My brother in law tried to fix it, an din doing so he also bought a second one of a similar model, but it turned out the parts aren't quite the same. He gave them and the spares to me in the end. No idea what's up with the new one, the tray keeps opening and closing, and it won't play. The original one has broken bits of plastic, and the sync between the tray closing and the mechanism rising is kaput. I should have known better. I guess I'm selling it without a working CD player then!

Kenzie
25-07-20, 08:47 PM
Wouldn't have a clue there! I can just about get by with cameras. Lesson learnt on waiting for the £1 selling fee offers, got stung a bit. All of todays sales have been paid for, just got to box a couple more up and off to the post office, I think the branch in town is open tomorrow and it would be good to get them gone.

Yeah I didn't think much of it until a while back when I had a bill for something like a tenner. They seem to have had a few of those promos this year though. Bank holidays are good too, people will buy allsorts.

Kenzie
26-07-20, 07:01 AM
Did you manage to sort the slow speeds out on your Contax? I've got my eye on one but the slow speeds don't work apparently. Comes with a Sonnar 50mm f2.

johnnyrod
26-07-20, 05:37 PM
Haven't touched it. I looked into repairs, there is a fair bit of info out there. I think the timing gear comes out attached to the shutter assembly, not sure if you can remove it and soak it, may just need to wash it down. I expect the one you're looking at is just gummed up, I'd take a punt on it if the rest looks good. How is the lens? When Jen bought this one for me, there was also a iiia with a 50mm f1.5. I didn't really want the meter, but it is supposed to be a much better lens, not just a bit faster.

Kenzie
26-07-20, 05:39 PM
I took a punt on it, listed as ugly but described as cosmetically good with a clean lens, viewfinder will probably need cleaning too. "Slow speeds don't work because, well its a Contax" £99 from Yoko's favourite shop. Bought blind as there were no pics and they are hard people to get pics out of. Also grabbed a Minolta SRT303 for a tenner from the Outlet section. I posted out the Pentax to M42 adapter to you as well, made sense while I was shipping out everything else. I prefer the look of the meterless ones anyway. What year is yours?

Great, thanks. Spring 1951 apparently, according to the serial number, I seem to think the lens is a few years earlier, can't be bothered to look it up though. Mine is also a 50mm F2. I used it and the Jupiter 8 (same) on my Kiev iiia, and you can't tell the difference.

They are known to have been hastily assembled and often the (hand made) parts weren't that well made as they paid the workers piecework, so the more they made, the more they earned. We are doing various things on our house at the moment so not done much else in the evenings. I do want to get on and work on a few more though.

I saw it in my local camera shop, a model I didn't know existed this morning.
It's the first time I've been in post-lockdown and they've got some amazing stuff on display. Your type of thing Johnny. Old Contax rangefinders, Voigtlanders, folders, an old Petri SLR a Leica or two ...

Where I live, not WYC. A small place and they don't have a website but it's good to have a local Camera shop that processes film. Somewhere to drop in when you do the road trip up north.
They had a Himatic S which tempted me and also, another one I hadn't heard of, a Minolta SR7 with a Rokkor 1.4 on it

Kenzie
27-07-20, 07:27 PM
Any details on the Leicas? The SR range looks quite nice. I got an email from Camerahack, my 127 film slitter has been posted, can't wait to run some colour film through my 127 cameras.

yokohama
27-07-20, 08:05 PM
I can't remember what the Leicas were but I'll have another look the next time I go in. The Contax RFs were the ones the Kiev 4s copied, and looked almost pristine.

Kenzie
27-07-20, 08:08 PM
No worries, part of me is leaning towards a Nikon F2 anyway. So what made you go for the DC?

yokohama
27-07-20, 08:32 PM
It was an impulse buy really. Saw it, went for a coffee and had a quick look at internet reviews and decided to go for it. It was keenly priced and looking at ebay sold listings, a good deal. It's the same size as the Oly 35 RC and so will go in a pocket, but without the faff of the tiny dials and with a better 1.7 lens. Fully auto but the viewfinder shows the shutter/aperture combination chosen. Having sold the RC and the Vivitar ES, I don't have a compact rangefinder anymore apart from the Ricoh 500.

Kenzie
27-07-20, 08:46 PM
I resealed my 500G three years ago and still haven't run a test roll through it! Looks like a great bit of kit. Did you ever have an RC?

Sent from my Xperia using Tapatalk

yokohama
27-07-20, 09:00 PM
Yeah, I had an RC, Took it to China last year but didn't really get on with it. I didn't find the lens that sharp, it was fiddly to use and, despite the hype, I thought it was over rated so I cashed in and got 3 times what I paid for it.
I've tested my 500G and it's fine. Nothing spectacular but it's OK and easier to use than the 35RC I think.

Kenzie
27-07-20, 09:04 PM
Mines just on display. I swapped out the front element from an ECR as mine was messy. I'm guessing you aren't going anywhere this year? Hope this is all over soon, this whole year has been a write off.

I've had a few, with variable results. my first RF was the Contessamat, from Holland via Etsy, said to be fine but actually in desperate need of CLA. Refunded and kept it. Mamiya Six Automat from Japan, same. Super Fujica Six, can't remember if I got some refund, but otherwise the same. Contax ii from Germany, same. Contessa 35 (folding) from USA, just as described and very helpful. I've heard very polarised opinions about Japan. These have all been via ebay, except the first one.
In terms of non-EU, ebay global shipping usually tells you the costs up front, so you pay it then and that's all. In the case of the Contessa I don't know what info they put in, but it was £12 for delivery, and that was all, all fees, taxes etc. I fully expected another bill but it never came. I've also bought other non-EU stuff and it gets stopped by customs, who send you a bill plus handling fee. Sellers sometimes agree to put a low value on the docket to get it under the limit, but many won't, it's worth asking though as if they will then it means you're more likely to buy from them.
The super ikonta looks good, it's not such a special price, or is it? I don't know. Deffo need to clean the glass, and I'd lay money on needing to clean the shutter too. No surprise the focus doesn't work if the rotating wedge arm isn't raised! The VF and RF are separate on these BTW.
The PK/M42 ring came today, thanks! I'll have to send you the expired film some day.

Some day...

Well my Contax arrived today. Very suprised that it came with a case (more on that in a mo). It was described as ugly, but I would call it well travelled. The lens is fine, slow speeds do work too. The serial number dates it to 1937, body and back numbers match which is good, but the viewfinder is a bit dull but usable. Don't worry, I know about the Contax Grip.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50170451396_cb968e455a_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2jroFhG)

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50170708387_12f3177420_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2jrpZFz)

It has a couple of Zeiss bumps, but don't they all?

Now, on to the case. In good condition but comes with some history. Hopefully this case is the original as it states:

Lt. Col W.F.L Fava R.A.M.C. (the rank of Major has been crossed out and replaced with Lt.Col) This is the Royal Army Medical Corps. Now I punched this into the interwebs and it came back with this:

https://www.maltaramc.com/ramcoff/f/favawfl.html

Now if this is accurate it means he bought this camera on arrival in the England in 1937 and he was promoted from Major to Lt.Col in May 1943. He also served in India and Singapore. This camera may have been all over the world and carried during WW2. There is even a picture of him in the link.

I know right. Also, the Outlet SRT303 works fine. Got a dent in the prism hump but a small bit of wood after taking the top plate off has solved that, just a ripple instead of a dent.
Oh, the serial number on the lens falls between the serial number range for 1937/1938

Some nice macro shots there. I discovered a set of Vivitar close up filters among all the discarded bits and bobs I have but they are 55mm!! Nothing fits. I need to look for a step down ring.
The Spotmatic is proving a disaster. After taking a few shots using the centre needle metering, I actually glanced at the shutter and aperture settings to find it's way out. Working but not working. To make it worse, I keep forgetting to close the aperture down on the Helios after focussing. I'm not holding out much hope for the results,

johnnyrod
03-08-20, 08:44 PM
As far as I know the circuits in the Spotmatics are fairly resistant to differing battery voltages. The one I have here works fine with 1.5V cells. Does yours (or the combo with the Helios) not have automatic diaphragm closure? Without getting it out again, I think the SP500 does. I guess you'll find out how much latitude your film has.

yokohama
03-08-20, 09:06 PM
I think the metering needs fixing Johnny. The needle moves and responds to changing light but it's not accurate. The battery is new and battery check shows it as fine. I've tried changing the ASA to get the exposure correct but then, the needle goes all over the place.
The Helios is the 44-2, a weird one. It's got 2 rings. One to set the aperture; the other opens the aperture fully to focus but needs closing down again before taking the photo, which is the bit I keep forgetting.

Nice. I've done nothing for ages now. Got a couple of films back the other day, one from the OM-1 and one from my Konica S, shot 2018-2019. I didn't have anything else to send it off with so I hung onto it... The OM-1 looks good, the meter tends to over-expose but not generally beyond the range of the film. Very sharp lens. I have everything Pentax though so to go in another direction wouldn't make a lot of sense really. Something up with the shutter as well, i had overexposed bands here and there, more at higher speeds.

Kenzie

I've not been out shooting either. Been tinkering but no actual shooting. Probably won't do much until we can go out without the hassle of the Coronaviris rubbish.

I've done very little too though I did go out for a little hike last weekend and took the Contax 139Q with me. I've one finished film and 4 cameras with part shot films in them. Waiting until i can get all 5 processed together.
The virus has certainly messed up my year and while working from home was good at first, I'm beginning to get fed up of it now, staying in all day and staring at a computer.

Provided I don't die, it's been good to get out to work most days, my wife has been at home all this time. my pics are a bit stale but as you say, maybe not much of a surprise when we can't do much of what we're used to. Popped a film in my Olympus S now that the barrel wobble is fixed, the meter does still play up a bit (seems to be the aperture ring, but I shot the whole first film with a wobbly barrel and metering app). Had a look at the RF on the Certo Super Dollina I got recently. The screw heads for the top cover are a bit chewed (hmm) but I need to devote some time to it. The RF works, it's split top and bottom (like the Super Sport Dolly) not a superimposed image, although it's still difficult to use. I think the tripod socket needs a plug, it's underneath the film canister, and without it there's a hole into the chamber. Presumably though that would be the case if you wanted to remove the plug mid-film to use a tripod. Would seem odd of Certo to make a mistake like that. Anyway we've spent a lot of time (you know what that means too) on house stuff this summer, so not much on anything else.
As Kenzie has seen on FB, I did get some use out of the Fuji XP130 snorkelling camera when we went for a walk with some alpacas on Friday. The rear screen isn't great quality so the pics look crrrrap but when you see them on a laptop they're actually pretty good.

Yeah, notifications were turned off. I picked up this Pentax P50 as faulty, I actually wanted the lens and the case it came in. It wouldn't wind although the display lit up it didn't fire. Knowing how picky the P range is with batteries I chucked in a fresh set. Works a treat. Also, the last pic may have been a problem. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200820/48a60682d9394e055b7183cc6ad8ee3f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200820/76ff1432d5c11e6dbe32c0b3f008fc36.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200820/cf98537d350051f1adff1d56f8a1811d.jpg

Just taken a punt on this lot 353177664729 hoping there is a hidden gem of a lens in here. There seems to be three versions of the Minolta 35-70, it's not marked Rokkor so it's not a mk1, can't see the macro of the mk3 either.

It'll be interesting to see what turns up in there. Impossible to tell which version of the 35-70 it is but as you say, it's either version 2 or 3, which are supposed to have fairly similar image quality. Even better if you can get the cameras working.

I also picked up a job lot of gear from a Facebook market post, two hour round trip on the bike but this Topcon Uni was the pick of the bunch. Had to flick the flash switch off V and it seems to be working OK. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200822/304f7bad8c663e2917d67c14fc200fc1.jpg

The GAS is taking you! Fingers crossed for the haul. I've started taking some pics with my Olympus S, it's even quieter than the Konica, especially now the barrel wobble has gone. It works fine but it does sound like it's not firing.

Good for street photography! The Topcon has a really weird set up, it's got a leaf shutter instead of a curtain. The mirror acts as a blind, when you press the release the shutter closes, the aperture stops down, the mirror flips out of the way and the shutter fires. Once that's done, the mirror flips down and the aperture and shutter open again. I'll try and get a slow mo of it. The bundle included a Zenit E, a Pentax A3, Polaroid Supercolor, Polaroid Super Swinger, Polaroid Swinger and a Praktica PL Nova B.

Good to get a Topcon. There aren't many of those around.

Sellers photo. Couldn't tell right away what it was. There is even a Sony Mavica that uses floppy discs! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200823/8f9320f45fbdbf7fa2436981c0f94cec.jpg

Interesting about the Topcon, I think there were a few leaf shutter SLRs and they were all fearsomely complex. Some or all of the Zeiss Contaflexes only allowed a view through the VF when the shutter was cokked, and yes same sort of complex series of things having to open and close, you can see why the focal plane shutter was easier to use, even if it meant fiddling with curtains and a slow flash sync speed.

From what I have been reading the Topcon was complex and expensive to repair, hence the reason there are so many orphaned lenses for sale. I managed to grab a Minolta XG 1with a 45mm f2 lens off eBay,hopefully the lens will be in good condition without fungus.

Hey Yoko, have you ever done any trade-ins with WYC? They have a Nikon F2 I'm interested in and wondering what they were like. I've only ever bought from them.

No pics though: https://wycameras.com/collections/latest-stock/products/contax-iia-w-zeiss-5cm-f-2-sonnar-ugly

No, I never traded anything in. Like you, I've only ever bought lenses and a few other bits so no idea what their trade in deals are like.

I sent them an email. If I can tradenin some gear that I don't use and get something I want then I'll be happy. Website says that are flat out busy at the mo.

It actually works! It takes about ten seconds from pressing the shutter button for it to write the image to disc and be ready to take another photo. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200826/f92949d317d1fcfa7f9fcdb362a171d8.jpg

It's only that size because of the disk drive. I'll need to dig out my old Compaq laptop with the built in disc drive to get the photos off it. I've take 8 shots so far and its used a quarter of the storage.

Someone not far from here has listed a Minolta Autocord Export model TLR on Facebook. Always fancied a Minolta TLR.

The joblot turned up today, the 35-70 Minolta lens was the macro version. Got some fungus inside, I managed to clean up the rear element but I cannot undo the front locking ring to clean the front element. I also got the XG-1 through today, it came with a 45mm f2 on the front. I've put the lens from this one on my X500 and moved my other less perfect 45mm to my rough XG-M.

Two nice lenses there. I really like the fiit of the 45mm pancake on the X or XD series.
I finally bought a step up ring to fit the 55m macro filters to other lenses.

My first 45mm has a little bit of fungus, this later one seems to be in better condition. I'm going to chance a trip to the car boot sale on Sunday, I've only been once this year and that was mostly empty. I don't know what to do with the XG1 body, I've got loads of other X range cameras so its a bit surplus. Maybe I'll move it on when I do the next clear out. I also found a grip for the OMD on ebay, popped a bid on.

I went out for a hike in the Dales yesterday and - shock horror - finished a film that had been in a Ricoh 500GX for about 3 years. The lens barrel was becoming really wobbly so I had to take the front off, (finicky little locking ring to remove) tighten up a couple of screws and it's now rock solid.
This one's a version of the 500G but with the addition of a multiple exposure switch and a shutter lock. Just on a whim, looked on ebay and there are 2 examples, both at 3 figure prices!!

How can you tell if it's a multi exposure version? Might have to check mine! I grabbed another OM10 from a local Faceache post. I wanted it for the manual adapter (to fit on my OM10 Quartz) and the Hunter strap (for one of my OM1s). The hotshoe had come away from the top plate but otherwise in good order, took about 20 mins to pop the top off, resolder the wire and screw it back together. Anyone know anyone wanting to get into film photography? I have like five OM10s now....

It's called the 500GX and has a slider on the front side that operates the multi exposure mechanism. See the pic here. https://manondamoon.com/dsc00202-2/ Can't believe the prices being asked for them.
I didn't realise there was an OM10 Quartz - just looked it up.

Oh yeah, didn't you know? Black paint makes you a pro! I managed to find a grip for my OMD, paid a tenner plus post. I almost laughed when I say it (it's tiny!) But it's added some needed bulk and weight to an otherwise dinky camera.

Found a Pentax 28mm f2.8 in an antique shop today. Thought I'd pop it on one of the MXs. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200907/4160c72652cd51f5a555b1c85ee5b042.jpg

I had a later one (wording around the edge like white lettered tyres), it wasn't very good, the earlier lenses are often better though. I also had a Hoya 28mm f2.8, it was better than the Pentax.

Ah, you probably had the later SMC-A lens. A lot more plastic in those ones. I have a few of them, f1.4, f1.7 and an f2. Fired off a couple of shots with a Sureshot A1, but not much doing. Its my wife's birthday tomorrow so we both have the day off and are going to take the bikes out.

Hey Howard, that rough old Canon A1 that you sent me ages ago has been sitting in the dead box for ages. Dug it out yesterday and popped a battery in. Seems to be working now, but with a bad case of Canon Cough.

My notifications are still not working... Its really odd about the Canon, its been sat doing nothing and now all of a sudden it works. Side note, are UV filters worth it? I've read they can degrade image quality on digital, but not so much of a problem with film.

I'm not sure about UV filters and the effect they have on mages. I think there are different grades of UV filter too, which complicates it even more. I've always stayed simple and gone for plain old skylights.
