The plan is to keep the macro lens for the moment and try it out...see how I feel about it. Once I've put light seals in the OM2, I'll shoot a film through it using the macro at different ranges.
If I decide to let it go, you can have first dibs, but unfortunately it's not a cheapo.

No worries. Been out shooting?

Unfortunately not, working. But I've got next week off so hope to get out with cameras and on the bike too.

Ha, another Contina, though really it's a later version of the Ikonta 35, I have one on a shelf, looks nice but guess what, too sticky to use - add it to the list. They are very compact and I like the idea of a folding 35mm, even if it is zone focus. Good that it has a case, they're hard to find.

This may be of interest, I don't know much about it but it's free:
www.coursera.org/learn/photography
From what I can gather it's more about appreciation and composition than technique. Might give it a go.

Missed what would have been a really great picture yesterday. Just popped across the road to post a card, with my little daughter. She scampered off ahead and can just reach the slot of the postbox now. As she was getting closer to it, it struck me, but I didn't even have my phone in my pocket. Bright red postbox set in a stone wall, tarmac path, grass verge, bright blue envelope, light behind me, definitely not one for B&W. Oh well! She loves posting letters so it would have been good.

That course looks interesting but are you sure it's free? There's mention of a fee.

Northallerton charity shops are a different league to those in Ipswich. I walked past one on the way home - they had a Spotmatic f in the window. Lots of goodies with it, extra 35mm lens, flash, case, eyepiece...... but they wanted £50 and both lenses had lots of mould on both the front and rear elements.

Good stuff doesn't come up that often at low prices. Normally they want too much for it and I pass. Most I'll pay is a tenner. Remind me what sort of camera your fried was after?
Johnny, all those cameras and you didn't have one on you???
Has your mystery camera arrived yet?

Damn! There's an xd7 amongst that lot.

I think my friend will be happy with some kind of rangefinder type thing. I sent her some pics and I think she'd prefer more of the Trip style than the old Zeiss machines.

johnnyrod
14-06-16, 07:50 PM
Yeah they're not glued to me. I'm not really a technophile but normally I'd have my phone on me for its camera, just bad luck. I don't mind watching life without trying to picture it, but I just saw it coming together and it would have been that good.

Spotty sounds good, depends a bit if the mould has eaten the coating or if there are any other problems. Sometimes things like that are a symptom of damp storage so the camera has rust etc. inside, though older lenses do grow fungus quite readily sometimes. I think the F was the first with open aperture metering? I'm not enough of a purist to live with stop-down.

Not delivered yet, soon I think. Also must get thumb out and try to reassemble the Vito - when do you need the cameras for, yoke?

johnnyrod

There seem to be grillions of Himatic 7s on ebay for buttons, the Rokkor lens is said to be good I believe

Damn! There's an xd7 amongst that lot.

Is that a good thing?

Yoko, be careful of rangefinders from the 1970s, they use a unavailable mercury battery. You can get replacements but have to drop the iso setting a notch to compensate.

yokohama
14-06-16, 08:11 PM
Not going to China until the first week in October so lots of time yet. SLR should be easy - but what lens is more difficult.
The Himatic looks good. I'd not seen one of those before. Where are all the ones for buttons?

Thanks, I didn't know that about the batteries. I'll remember.
XD7 is meant to be very good but not so many around, which is why I had to make do with an XD5.

johnnyrod
14-06-16, 08:24 PM
You can use zinc-air (hearing aid) ones as they have a similar voltage (but last about 6 weeks after opening regardless of use), or you can have the camera adjusted for 1.5v batteries, or just work out the difference as Kenzie says. Some cameras are unaffected for various reasons - the Yashica Electro 35 is probably the best known reason, it's a big thing though.

I look sometimes for cheap cameras on ebay and keep tripping over Himatics. Not what I'm after so I skip the details and I don't know about the various models, in all honesty. Nothing doing just now as you say but if you check out which models are good then I'll happily keep an eye open.

Just thought, I can use my soon to be completed 3d printer to make battery adapters, hot/cold shoe covers and lens caps!

yokohama
14-06-16, 08:42 PM
Now that is cool!!

The XD5 does have a beautiful metal shutter though. Quiet and very little slap or vibration. I'm hoping it will look pretty with the new skin although I was conservative and went for a dark blue.

Said to be fine but seller sounds full of it, and not sure if they're dust spots or fungus on the lens

Not necessarily this one but I think Petri are worth checking out. I could sell you a Konica though, only two parts missing, great lens

Kenzie
14-06-16, 09:04 PM
That RC won't go cheap. They average around £20-£25. The Petri looks good. Can imagine Yoko wondering how he can get the XD7 now. There is a site called Thingyverse and they list loads of 3d models to print. I am willing do do bits and bobs for people within reason, and as long as it fits in a 140x140x140mm print area.

£40!

I'm saying nothing. I saw a Canonet QL17 G3 (minor problem with it) which I expect will also ramp up in price but apart from having more cameras in need of fixing than not, and the wife would actually finally flip, I do have other things to do. The devil does indeed make work for idle hands (or Idle Hans if you're into dad jokes).

yokohama
14-06-16, 09:42 PM
I hide the cameras from the wife. She sees the boxes arrive but doesn't know what they are.

Kenzie - I guess that's the printer. I just can't get my head round how they work.

Kenzie

I don't hide mine, think it would be bad.

This is the printer I have, just got the filament spool and hood to go. Taken nearly two years as a part-work.

Yoko, as if we would encourage you to buy that wonderfully complete branded Minolta camera set. You have a 300 but not the 370s.

I know this is a film thread mostly, but if anyone wants a DSLR then this might go cheap due to badly spelled title:

My wife's Kindle jones is another story! At least the house isn't a fire hazard from the tons of paper any more.

Good spot Kenzie. Are you going to bid on the Olpus? 99p, no reserve and no watchers.

The Minolta is still available. I emailed ...just out of curiosity! The 2 lenses are meant to be among Minolta's better offerings so I'm tempted.

johnnyrod
15-06-16, 11:07 AM
The mystery camera arrived today, it's fairly grubby alright but fully working and the lenses aren't too bad. The word is "Errtee" which means Romain Talbot, a German who sold cameras under his own brand (RT) but looks likely to have been a Foth design, or possibly Welta (think Kenzie guessed this earlier). No idea of age, anywhere from 1929 to 1950. The Cassar lens shouldn't be a bad one, f2.9 so good for the time. It's a bit tinny compared to other folders but the struts pop out very easily. No idea of price as I can't find another one. It might be called Trixie but then again might not. There seems to have been one on Ebay but the listing is all but gone even to my skillz - all I can dig up is it went for £16 in January.

Kenzie
15-06-16, 11:38 AM
Wow, I would never have guessed that name! Yoko, remember what they say about curiosity!
Got this in the post today

Can't think of many more I want but never say never as GAS can be hard to ignore. Will keep an eye on the Olpus but I do have a D3200 that struggles to get a look in with all my film gear. Mostly use it to photo the oldies!

A delivery for me today too. Received the package from Aki Asahi. Very good service - posted in Nagoya on Saturday.
For some reason I got 2 skins instead of one. A blue one and a kind of weird snakeskin black and brown one. Don't know which one to use but it will keep me busy on a rainy day next week.

Got a pic? looking to reskin the fx-d but not sure if black or blue would go well with a chrome top.
Should have done my research. The Ricoh Auto 35 is zone focus and the Ricohmatic is the rangefinder.

Couple of pics here. I don't know if they are helpful. The blue is leather; the other one looks quite cool but has a bit of a plasticky feel.

Cheers. Not done this before so it's a good tip. I got a couple of pointy wooden sticks in the package but I think they're meant for scraping the old seals out.
I'll post a pic once I've decided which one and reskinned it.

There's a distinct possibility I may be going to have a look at the x370 in the coming days.

Yeah, likely to be for the light seals. Use something similar for the trim. I've skinned a couple of Trips.

Yeah. I've been rooting round looking at internet reviews and opinions and those 2 lenses seem to be pretty good. Camera could even go to China. It's black (basically a black x300 with more plastic) and looks cool.

15-06-16, 09:13 PM
Nice, hope it works. Looks like you need to do a bit of cleaning up though. You get a free stetson with that camera skin, yoko?

Have spent the evening spanking the shutter speed tester and racking my brains, think I have finished adjusting the shutter speeds on my old Certo. Took a while to understand what I was doing. Speeds 1s-1/100 are accurate, as in, no more than 17% out, one as good as 2%. Top speeds are slow though, 1/200 is 1/130ish and 1/400 is 1/180, but there doesn't seem to be anything else I can do about it. There are a few very knowledgeable guys on the rangefinder forum, I'd be pretty screwed without their help. Still need to clean up the body and put it back together.

Noticed the Errtee has a slipped aperture blade, seems to be moving a bit though so maybe not broken. It has about a dozen though so the aperture is a little egg-shaped but not too bad, rather than a nice circle. Really grubby, you could call it a barn find!

yokohama
15-06-16, 09:21 PM
That Zeiss looks very similar to the one I found. Same lens and focus method too.
I think the wires are crossed on camera deals. You're thinking of the ebay bundle in London...much as I fancy the xd7, I'll leave that one alone.
I might email the seller if it doesn't go. There looks to be a lot of junk in there though.

Kenzie
16-06-16, 06:01 AM
Which one is the London one? Hey Johnny, this gave me a wild idea, http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:773759 why don't you have your Konica S blade 3d scanned and printed?

It'd be worth a go Kenzie, the shear forces on the actuating pegs can be high if the user is particularly ham-fisted, and the tolerances are close - but I guess it could be finished by hand. What sort of thickness can a sheet be made?

Kenzie

Got the manual adapter for the OM10 through today. Amazed it didn't get broken as it was just in an envelope and no padding. Thought it better than buying another camera body just for shutter speed adjustment.

johnnyrod
17-06-16, 07:33 PM
I'm hearing things, surely?

Got the Certo back in one piece, I need to adjust the focus though. Not sure how just yet, need to have another look. Also picked up two 24x16 canvas prints from 35mm - you may remember the dog lying on the floor, and one of my daughter in a furry hat and mittens. They haven't really lost any detail in the enlargement, plus of course they will be viewed from further away than a print. Pretty pleased with them (one is a present for my brother in law's wife), and they are scanned straight from the negative, no PP, no cropping. Both shot wide open f1.2 with my MX in quite low light, with fingers crossed they'd be bright enough. Which makes up for some of the dross from my last couple of rolls....

Kenzie
17-06-16, 07:56 PM
I was looking at getting an Olympus OM20 as it has shutter speed adjustment. But it's yet another slr body. Recleaning the focus on the Comet as the grease set solid and it got stuck.

johnnyrod
17-06-16, 08:25 PM
I invested in some white lithium grease for that sort of thing. Easiest to get hold of however was a spray tin of it made by WD40 so I have to spray it into something to stop it going everywhere, or onto a swab.

johnnyrod
17-06-16, 08:34 PM
You both may have satisfied your Zeiss desires, otherwise there's 201602003402 (ask if the meter works, as ever)

yokohama
17-06-16, 08:52 PM
The manual adapter on the OM10 is well worth it; gives the camera an extra dimension and the user more control. It's strange it was an add on rather than incorporated into the camera.

I'm just back with more Minolta gear, a 35-70 zoom and a lovely 70-210 lump in excellent condition.
That's 4 lots of stuff I've bought on Gumtree now. All really nice people and genuinely good deals.

Kenzie

Pentax K2 with 50mm f1.2 lens, Certo, two mowers, but also sold a ton of stuff on there - the consumerist joy of fatherhood. It's just classified for the 21st century. Shame it's easy to find things that are too far away, but at least you get to see what you're buying and do a deal.

yokohama
17-06-16, 09:09 PM
That's true. You get the chance to look at things and walk away if you are not happy with it. Maybe that's why sellers are genuine. They know it's a face to face deal with no obligation so no point lying or trying to pass off junk.

Got the Super Frankarette stripped down to see whats wrong with the winder/film transport. Sometimes you can't fire the shutter after winding on. Seems the double exposure lock doesn't always release. May need oiling or degreasing, not sure which yet.

I took the shrunken leather off the XD5 and cleaned off all the old glue. I was going to reskin it but I'm quite taken with the futurist, minimalistic look. I think it's awesome. I might keep this and cover it with some kind of clear film. Reckon that would work?
http://forums.sv650.org/picture.php?albumid=1237&pictureid=8051

I was playing round with the shutter too and lots of black specks appeared through the viewfinder. I think it's bits of foam from the shutter cushion coming off and getting behind the focus screen. It looks like I'll need to take that out, clean the screen and replace the foam.....another job for next week's rainy day.

Kenzie

It's naked! Didn't find any hidden messages? The Frankarette issues can be overcome by holding the winder full over for a few seconds longer.

The naked XD5 is a mean thing .... thinking ...
Are those shots from the Ricoh today? They look good. Colours and contrast are nice.
Are the different sizes something to do with the half size photo?? And in the harbour pic, the right hand side looks more defined than the left.

Kenzie
18-06-16, 08:17 PM
They were taken last week. Only got them done today. Will run another film but leave it on auto to see if the meter works ok. They sold it as faulty winder but it will advance three frames before engaging properly to allow you to wind. It's a cool little camera, easy to pocket.
You need some clear vinyl or something on that to show off its shell.

yokohama
18-06-16, 08:23 PM
So how does it work? Just like a normal camera but half size images and twice as many pictures to a film?

Kenzie
18-06-16, 08:52 PM
They tend to be smaller than most 35mm cameras (xa/minox excepting) but yes, half the image size and double the fun. 72 shots on a 36 roll.

You do realise that if, about 75 pages ago, you'd decided you wanted a dignette, you could have had mine, .... and saved me from burning money collecting bits of 1980s Japanese metal and glass. :) :)

I have no idea about the lenses - only that mines a 2.8 Dignar. I think different lenses went on different models. The later, super Dignette has the Cassar I think, but it's also got a lightmeter too. I think it might depend on what model you are looking at - there are different shutters on different models too.
I couldn't find much information about them when I was looking. There's more on the Ilford Sportsman, which is a rebadged Dacora.

Wow. I like the vest pocket. 100 years old more or less. I wonder what its history is.
Are you going to try it out?

The thought had crossed my mind that somewhere in a page long long ago that someone had mentioned a Dignette. Have you still got it? It would be great to shoot with but the bellows are in really poor condition and the shutter sticks open. Nice to look at though. There is one on ebay that I may take a shot at for a shooter but 127 film is hard to get without chopping off an arm and leg!

Yeah. Still got the Dignette. I'm going to keep it but I need to fix the faulty film release mechanism.

Kenzie

What is up with it?

yokohama
19-06-16, 02:24 PM
It's not releasing. When the film release button is pressed, the 2 cogs that guide the film along should move upwards and disengage, allowing the film to be rewound. This isn't happening properly; there's something wrong with the mechanism so it looks like the bottom and maybe the top will have to come off the camera for me to check it out.
It's not a big problem as the camera shop can take the film out in their darkbox but I'd like to fix it.

I'm in the XD5 prism this afternoon. Cleaned all the bits of crud out, removed the focus screen and putting in new mirror cushion foam. Fiddly.

Think I've misplaced my changing bag. When I took apart a Pen the take up spool is made up of a inner and outer shaft, spring and locking pin. Had to take the top plate off. If I pick up a Dignette I'll take a look inside.

yokohama
19-06-16, 04:55 PM
Thanks. I think the problem with the dignette is with either the spring or some sort of catch not pushing up the shaft.
I managed to clean out all the bits of old foam from behind the prism and replaced the XD5 mirror cushions. The focus screen was a b*##*r to get back. I needed tweezers and a magnifying glass. Replaced all the lightseals in the back too so it's ready to go now.
OM2 next.

Would have to think whether you would get light leaks though.

Hey Yokohama, the Dignette I bought is older than yours. Not sure how much help it will be. Say your photos back on page 54.

You wouldn't, but you'd risk dirt and dust getting into the mechanisms, so yes some sort of clear wrapping would be best. Not sure how tough it is but from B&Q etc. you can get some totally transparent wide tape, it's not just see-through like sellotape, it's properly clear. Sticky side seems pretty good.

Johnny, you bad man. That Petri looks to be in pretty good condition. I'm off work this week and it's just a little detour off a ride to Alston. Tempting. Either of you got a Petri 7?

I just spent 2 hours scraping light seals out of the OM2. Disgusting. I think Olympus glue theirs in so the old seals have to be dug out bit by bit. The Minolta ones are easier, they use adhesive strips so if you can get under them at one end, the whole thing just peels out.

Got someones name on the strap. I like a bit of history with cameras, my Super Frankarette has a Chelmsford postcode written inside as well as a sticker from Westminster Photographic when they were in Cheapside.

A couple of the cases I have, have addresses in them, one is too blotted to read though. One came with its original receipt.

I remember reading good things about the Petri but I can't remember much else. Some info here

I was thinking more about your China trip but hey, if you like it, why not.

yokohama

I might go and have a look at that Petri later in the week. As you say, me or China; it won't get wasted.
I think one of the cameras I bought came with the original receipt and guarantee.
The x700 I got on Gumtree has a Polish dealer's sticker inside.

Might get a light seal kit for the OM10 and leather/light seals for the FX-D from the same place as you Yoko.

Nice one. I was pleased with the speed of delivery. There's a discount for multiple items too. I think the lightseal foam sheets, foam strings and leather cover came to 26 dollars. Up early this morning so I'm putting lightseals in another minolta. Last one I hope.

Kenzie

Didn't realise that the seals in the OM10 were basically mush.one is on the squiff so amazed it even does anything! Not sure on colour for the fx-d though.

I'd better check my OM10 too when the film comes out. How's the shutter mirror seal? That was what was messing up the XD5. Every time the mirror hit what was left of the foam, little balls of goo were going everywhere.
Colour for the skin is a difficult choice. I was thinking red, but it looked a bit too bright; also considered white before I decided to play safe and go for the blue.

Was it for your friend? Bit rude but if they made a mistake then I guess they could correct it or at least offer it to you. Will you have a bid on it? Like how they list it as an OM10 when its an OM20. Had a go at making some light seals for the OM10. Film door is tight now but need to run a film through to make sure it doesn't leak.

yokohama
20-06-16, 06:14 PM
Yeah. The OM20 was for China but no big deal. I know I can always pick up an x300 for under £20 if all else fails. MD lenses are plentiful too. Actually, she might want the 370s. It was made in Shanghai, not Osaka.
Don't mention light seals leaking... I couldn't face doing them all again.

Kenzie
20-06-16, 06:32 PM
The Trip seals are easy to do. Whats the difference between the 300 and 370?

yokohama
20-06-16, 06:59 PM
Pretty much the same camera as far as I know but the 370 was outsourced to Seagull in China and made there. It's lighter but that's because the body is mostly plastic. It's also got a little window so you can see the film canister. There's no little compartment for the film box lid on the back

Kenzie
20-06-16, 07:07 PM
Ah, no film reminder. I could use one of those as I sometimes forget to check there is film in the camera before I go shooting! Picked up a tip from the Ricoh slr I got from a charity shop. If the camera is loaded then fold a small section of the film packet and slide it into the hotshoe (as long as you don't plan on using the flash)

Okay am bidding on 311635119271 as I thnk it has the right bits for my Konica. If anyone wants it then let me know as if it's the wrong one I'll make it work and sell it on. Really managed to resist the GAS as there were a bunch of Super Ikontas on ebay the other night, almost enough for a Herbert Lom twitch.

Off on hols next week so will be getting more use out of my waterproof Vivitar digi cam. Not taking any film ones with me, we're off to a resort and just staying in it so nit much to look at.
