View Full Version : Vintage film cameras
Right, I have two seemingly working silver buttons. Just found out that Olympus used three different lens threads. So this project is on how until I source a pair of donor cameras. The black button is being weird, in auto mode the meter chooses the aperture, but auto still seems to be working in manual mode.
Car boot rummage today, Fujica ST605 and a Voigtlander Perkeo. The ST is now wearing a Fujinon 55mm f2.2 that I was given.

The Perkeo is very clean.
The 50mm Olympus f1.8 is pretty decent

Can't imagine why my Kiev rangefinder didn't work....https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180415/60369c6819773c7228b9f2603db79295.jpg
It should be one continuous piece. I suddenly decided to bite the bullet and do the shutter swap. All back together but I forgot to latch the self timer lever in the shutter, I don't use it anyway so no biggie.
A few of the more interesting shots.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180415/542fe925bed35b2dfe438f68b24fa5e7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180415/a800467ffcc4b93a319e474ad64209bc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180415/fb4bf1eec6dce6975f37f73a582c32ef.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180415/89779845a3d3811ccfe68bbb9bf87a75.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180415/fbcba31b550976e534a772544a6757d1.jpg

Wow, you've been busy! Good score at the car booty. What lens on the Perkeo?

As above, looks like you had a really busy weekend on the repair front.
Two good finds at the car boot too. I like that Fujica; nice and tactile.
Vaskar f4.5 75mm. It's basically the same as the one you serviced, only much tidier, I nearly missed it, it was tucked in a box mixed in with some projectors. The guy wanted another fiver for the hood and filter but I ran out of cash. It wasn't too bad in the end, the rf was totally bored as the whole thing is glass. It seems good in terms of calibration so I'll shoot with it at some point.

How have you found working on the Kievs? Some day I'll need to tackle my Contax
Easy, the Contax is pretty much the same. There was a guide I read earlier about the Contax and pretty much identical. If you are taking the shutter out you will need a soldering iron for the pc contact. I kept getting the flash wire wedged under the mech. What's up with yours?

It's the one Jen got me for Christmas, the shutter is sticky, and the RF glass is so filthy you almost can't see the RF patch. I think the shutter works okay but needs cleaning up; the rest of it looks good, maybe that's only skin deep though! It has a Sonnar 50mm f2 lens with a little spot on it, maybe separation, but I used it for half a roll on my Kiev and you couldn't tell the difference.
Got the shutter from a Super Ikonta III but it won't go on my IV, too many small differences. Ah well, keep looking I guess.
I think I got lucky doing mine, there is a pin that holds some of the gears and if it comes out then you have to resync everything. Seems to be working OK. I got a Pentax MG (later version of the MV) to use for spares, listed as locked up mirror and won't wind. I noticed the shutter wasn't down fully so I gently helped it along, bam the mirror flips down and it works! £3.95 inc post.

Blimey! You the lucky one just now alright. I'm going to sell the Contessamatic and Ensign Selfix 820, been taking some pics. The latter will go for serious money but the Contessamatic I'm willing to give to someone on the org if they pay the postage. Here is an example of one (the E model, with rangefinder):
www.pacificrimcamera.com/pp/zicontessamatic.htm
Mine is all good except the meter is dead, and the case has a short strap. The strap is easy to sort, you get another strap, they were made to be able to take the long bit off and reattached the ends by a buckle.
Oh, and I got a Canon AL-1 for £4.95 from the same seller. The battery catch is broken but nothing a bit of duct tape couldn't sort! I'll pass on the Contessamatic thanks, maybe the others might be interested?
Perkeo anyone? 323211099338
Poo, the rangefinder on the Kiev is well out at infinity. I will need to take the faceplate off at some point and adjust it. So what are you lot up to?

Swimming lessons (me), and eyeball-deep in pedals that need regreasing. The Spawn has just changed bikes and I've got bikes coming out of my ears, most of them with rumbly pedals. Going to turn some of them back into cash though.
I took the X700, the Bessa and the new Perkeo to Duxford. The Perkeo seems to lag a little when the shutter release is pressed. If I push harder it will release normally but then I risk camera shake. The X700 seemed to perform well, and the Bessa was spot on. I shot three rolls of 120 and three rolls of 35mm. Will do the black and white this weekend and send off the colour.

Nice pics. Check the linkage for the shutter on the Perkeo, I can't remember the details now but I thought there was something loose or missing when I had it? I told you about it and I've forgotten now, or maybe the linkage has come loose since then anyway.

Even in smallsville Northallerton, I'm lucky enough to have 2 shops which process films in house. I'm waiting until I finish the roll in the OM1.
I was out on a ride today, took a couple more on the XA3; slowly, steadily ....
Johnny, this was the Perkeo from the car boot rather than the one you serviced. Yoko, slow and steady is good. Boot sale again today, got a Minolta XG-E, with a 100-200I'm f5.6 and an Olympus Stylus. Stylus was only £2.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180422/5a65b6aa38944f42015e59daeba77cd2.jpg
Poo, just devved a roll of Ektar as black and white. Mixed it up with a roll of Ilford Delta 400. Ah well, will need to mix up new developer and stop.
These are from the Perkeo, should have been colour. Seem to have turned out OK.

Looking good!
Thanks! Got me a Kodak Retinette 017 to tinker with. Listed at shutter not firing so I've got it stripped down and am in the process of giving it a good flushing out. Got the rear lens off as well which will need a good clean too. Got an odd problem with the shutter. If held upright as if taking a photo it seems fine, lay it down though and it mis-fires, as in click and nothing. Its a Prontor-SV.
Maybe if interest to you northeners?

Sounds like a loose part inside, try it face down and upside down as well, just for completeness. Something must be failing to engage. Are you using the button as the shutter release or the one on the shutter itself?
johnnyrod
24-04-18, 09:28 PM
So from the button or the shutter itself? Any difference between the two? It's a folding one, isn't it?
Yeah its a folder, I have been using the button on the shutter. It doesn't seem to make a difference on or off the camera.
Anyone fancy this?

Nasty piece of junk! Oh the irony. Anyhoo... dunno if I said, but I may have found some new lenses for my Mamiya Six Automat folder. I've asked a few questions of the seller (in Japan) and hopefully I can order it soon. The camera is great, but fungus has etched most of the surfaces, and I held little hope for finding spares other than a whole camera. 2015jpsames on ebay has Olympus and Sekor sets for sale, also a bunch of cases - mine has the wrong case, it should have the tripod boss at one end instead of in the middle ( like a Vitomatic).
No, you didn't mention. Great news if you can get some lenses for it, looked a nice bit of kit. I picked up an Olympus XA rangefinder but it has a shutter fault. No matter what aperture or iso its set on, it only fires at one speed. Also, still no closer to sorting out the Kodak, nothing looks obviously wrong which is frustrating.
Figured out what is wrong with the shutter. The shutter blade drive hook spring is broken. Its attached to the cocki.ng lever and latches when you set the shutter. If held right gravity latches it, any other position and it misses. I have two choices, replace it but will have to remove the main spring and retension when done, or tip the camera to the left when cocki.ng the shutter.

Nice bit of detective work there. How did you work that out?
I lifted the escapement out and removed the flash contacts. I was fiddling with it and then noticed it wouldn't latch. So now got to figure out what to do about it. I've sent Chris Sherlock at Retina Rescue for advice.

Are you sure it's broken, not just displaced? The screw on the main lever has certainly seen some action, unless it was you then you're not the first person to get in here. Best option would be to replace it if it is broken, not sure where to get one though.
Definitely broken, I found the remains under the bulb lever. I don't think I'm the first in there, the speed ring retaining ring wasn't very tight. I have loads of springs to try but don't want to undo the main and loose tension.

LoL. I look at it that way too - and then when I totally mess things up, realise that the someone is much cleverer than me.
That moment when the xv switch spring/plate ptings off somewhere [emoji24][emoji36] as well as the blade return spring. I had to split the shutter again to check out the spring. I've fixed the original problem and found a replacement return spring but now stuck without the xv spring...
I think I'll have to abandon this one for now. The spring I used is too strong and activates the shutter as its ****.ed.

Aye, probably long gone at £35.
Buying a house?? I suppose you need an extra room to store all the cameras. :)
I get my own room that I can turn into a darkroom! If it goes through that is. Space for my camper van, both our bikes and a garage for more bikes if we decide on more.

Massive step. Been in the flat thirteen years and running oit of space, parking can be a nightmare and my van is at a friend's house so I can't work on it. Looked at three places today and number two ticked all the right boxes. Its a waiting game now, first time buyers so its all new.

No worries, it five hours from here!
Seeing as I cannot fix the shutter on the Retinette at the moment I thought I would do an experiment. 75mm f3.5 Ennagon lens and shutter from a Dacora 1. Will just need collimating, and I should be able to tie the release lever to the original Kodak one. Only thing is I have to co.ck the shutter in order to close the front.

The lens/shutter swap idea isn't going to work. I can't get it to focus as the lens is designed to work with a longer bellows. Ho hum.

Sounded like a bit of a fudge. Could you fit the old lens to the new shutter though? The fittings are a sort of standard size aren't they?

Cool! If this is your first time, then be prepared for a hefty chunk of what a friend of mine described as post-coital depression - you'll realise you've signed for a big chunk of money and will start to convince yourself you've bought the wrong house. I'm pretty sure everyone gets it, it doesn't mean anything.
It s a real mix of emotions, excitement that we are getting a house and then worry about how much its going to cost etc. Don't get me wrong, we saved for three years and have no credit card debt to worry about but its still scary.
yokohama
03-05-18, 04:19 PM
It's not so different from paying rent but it's yours. Overpay when you can to pay it off sooner; no point saving too much at today's interest rates.
What scared me about buying was the loss of flexibility and freedom. I couldn't just up sticks and move round like I did before.
Hi, my name is Matt and its been 11 days since I bought a camera. We can overpay by 10% with no penalty so we will probably do so. Its gone quiet now, so more waiting!
yokohama
03-05-18, 07:17 PM

03-05-18, 07:56 PM
That's good. Would be great if you could get that working. Actually, I need to try mine out again. It still had a light leak last time I used it but I redid the seals.
Oh, one more piece of advice; start thinking about packing now. I seriously underestimated how long that would take and it involved lots of trips to the dump/charity shops.
Already on it. Got some boxes and will make a start on the dump runs this weekend. Most of the cameras are already in crates.
johnnyrod
04-05-18, 08:35 AM
You can take it all with you and sort it out later. There's as much truth in that as saying you'll buy a camera and sell it later if it'[s not your favourite. Years can go by before all boxes are opened. My rule of first night in a new house - get bladdered.
Nah, best to sort it now or it won't get sorted. I've always been rubbish at getting rid of stuff.
Johnny, so you still have the junker K1000 by any chance? I picked up a cheap K1000 but the battery cover is jammed by corrosion.
Well that didn't last long, Diax 1a and a display cabinet (£3) I also got a K1000 for £9.99, a Tessar 50mm for 2.99 and a Chinon CE5 for 5.99, as well as a couple of Paterson tanks for a couple of quid each.

johnnyrod
06-05-18, 05:44 PM
Nope, K1000 long gone. Don't force the battery cover, take the bottom plate off and soak it in WD40. I forced the one on my MX and has to reattach it tot he plate, a right faff. You can dissolve rust with vinegar, it's pretty mild but I wouldn't soak metal bits in it overnight or anything.
I did give it a quick soak in vinegar and I could see it fizzing. I'll keep trying but tbh I'll probably use it manually. I put a PK to M42 on and fitted the Tessar lens I found. The Diax only fires at one speed, no idea what is wrong.
johnnyrod
06-05-18, 08:34 PM
What speed do you think it fires at? It's a Compur shutter I think, from google. Fizzing means it's reacting, just watch out for other metal bits tarnishing. Really though vinegar is 5% acetic acid which is pretty weak so it's only going to go for metals slowly, but for oxides readily. At 5% however it'll be used up pretty quickly so when it looks like it's stopped, if you need to, change the vinegar and see if it starts again. Removing some of the corrosion should loosen it up though.
Yeah it's a compur, I can get the mount off but not the retaining ring underneath. I don't want to damage it.

If you can lightly tap your ring on something or get a small clicker you can usually get an animal to look right at you. That's a great kit for someone looking to get in to film photography.
