I'm hugely impressed with Mrs Rod's dedication to the cause.

I discovered the problem with the Tessar. I had the bright idea of stripping the lens down further and putting the lens barrel through the bottom of the focussing ring rather than the top. Went straight in smooth as you like but as soon as the bottom threads come to engage, it jams up. I think one of the threads is mashed at the entry point (possibly due to me trying to put it together so many times) and will need a bit of metalwork.

I didn't get anything off ebay in the end. Finished off the roll in the 44a today, as well as shooting with the Kiev 4A and the Rolleicord. Nothing in the charity shops, there was an See the 1A but it was £30.

yokohama
28-12-17, 09:03 PM
It was a good offer. I was thinking about films or a starter developing kit and chemicals. In the end I maxed out on a Leica.

Kenzie
28-12-17, 09:06 PM
A Leica? Do share.

yokohama
28-12-17, 09:21 PM
Unfortunately, not an analogue camera lol. But I got Huawei P10 phone with 2 Leica lenses. Had my eye on it for a while and it's come down a bit in price but this offer got it down from £350 to £280. Can't see it getting much cheaper than that.
Shame really. I really like my Lumia 920 and I've had it for 4 years. Best phone I've had. Great camera, image stabilisation, Windows is stable, fast and not buggy and it still runs as smoothly as when I bought it. But, bl###y Microsoft haven't upgraded this phone to WP10, support has ended, Skype's stopped working, some of my apps don't work or wont upgrade and WeChat (essential Chinese social media app) isn't fully working and doesn't keep up with the new versions. It infuriates me that just to maintain pace with technology, I have to give up a really good phone. Should put that in gripe of the day.

Just going through all my China photos, trying to sort them out.
I've chosen 6 categories and put 5 pics in each - picking only 5 was hard and I completely failed when it came to people/portraits.
I'll upload them and PM you the link.

How is the Kiev like to shoot?

Kenzie
29-12-17, 08:24 AM
There was me thinking you had jumped the Contax/Kiev gang and gone straight to the top and bought a Leica iii or something. The camera on that phone is supposed to be very good. The Kiev is actually quite nice to use once you get going with it, I was using the one with the broken rangefinder and I kept putting my finger over the top of the rf window. The Contax grip is going to take some time to getting used to. The shutter is whisper quite and sometimes hard to hear that it has even fired. I had a yellow filter on the front but forgot to add a stop to counter the loss of light. I'm thinking of opening it up in a dark bag and taking the film out rather than run the full roll, I will be left with a short roll but I can put it in something else that needs testing. I'll scan in the 44A film today. Send me the link Yoko, its alway good to see the photos.

The Kiev sounds quite pleasant to use. I'd be interested to see the results. I still have one on my wishlist but I'm not in a rush. Have far too many untested machines to play with first. Still tempted by a Nikon though .....

Kenzie
29-12-17, 10:01 AM
Just scanning the film from the 44A at the moment. I messed up with the developing, I thought it was Rerapan 100 which is 8 mins at 20c but its Rollei 80S which needs 12mins. Oops. I too have way too many that I have yet to use so I am trying hard not to buy any new ones, really hard though.

They've got a really nice vintage feel to them. What's the 44a - a Yashica?
I'd really like to have a go at developing B&W. Something to think about for this year.

Kenzie

Yeah, baby TLR from the car boot. The crane one has some newton rings on it where I taped it to the glass though. I was wanting to get out and shoot again today but its raining, it might ease off later on hopefully. The film has picked up some dust and hair though which is annoying. I would say go for it, I think you can buy whole kits now which makes it easier. You would then just need to choose a developer, stop and fixer. I keep meaning to get some photo flow to help with the streaks and water marks. This seems like a good deal, I have this tank and its easy to load and use https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/35MM-120-FILM-DEVELOPING-KIT-BARGAIN-PRICE/352234423053?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.M BE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D49138%26meid%3D365717eb9ad5433 c9e81b4374ff7d82d%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D 6%26mehot%3Dlo%26sd%3D312017167787&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

Snowing here, but I need to stay in until ebay/Amazon deliveries arrive.
The kit you linked is one I was looking at yesterday and as you say, it's pretty much all there apart from chemicals.
WYC used to do a kit too although it's not on the new website. I'll drop in when it reopens after new year. (must remember to leave all plastic cards at home!)

I just developed the part shot roll from the Kiev 4, a little frame spacing issue here and there but looking sharp. They are drying at the moment so I will scan them and post them up later. I need a film squeegee to help get the water off, and some proper film clips. This one is a bit more but comes with chemical storage jugs and a changing bag http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Film-Developing-Kit-for-35mm-or-120mm-3-BRAND-NEW-/351637004838?_trksid=p2349526.m2548.l4275

I just followed this guide http://pheugo.com/cameras/index.php?page=ilexprecise and completely tore down the shutter on my Argus AF. I have never torn a camera apart to this level (at least not with the intention of repairing it) and it all went back together after a soak in lighter fluid and is now firing well. Another one for the test queue!

Haharrrr, yes indeed, be sure you have the oil and grease out of the nooks and crannies or it'll just come back again.

Managed to unjam the Kiev without taking it apart (fiddling and luck) so need to check the focus next. Light meter is an oddity, seems to be basically useless in low light but has some sort of marks on the scale, I need to read the manual to understand what they mean. Also you set the film speed in GOST rating not ISO or even DIN. Actually just found a little converter card in the case, not sure the meter is going to be a lot of use to be honest but need to check it out ion daylight really. The shutter sounds a bit crunchy when winding on, but seems to fire okay. The Contax one sounds nice in its currently-working range of speeds, they're not really quiet though like a leaf shutter. The Kiev seems to sometimes not want to wind on without the shutter being pressed again - it doesn't fire then, but I do wonder if it is all okay. One way to find out!

29-12-17, 08:44 PM
You're having a busy day!
World of difference between the Kiev and the 44a. The first and last look really sharp.
The vintage lens adapter for the OMD arrived today. I need to figure out how to set the camera up to make it work first.

Kenzie
29-12-17, 08:45 PM
Johnny, have a look at the shutter button. There are two little dots. I think this is some old school shutter lock and they need to be lined up. My copy doesn't crunch when winding on, doesn't sound healthy. Butkus has a manual online. I had previously split the shutter down to the blades and cleaned them. Just going to give it a soak overnight to be sure.
Yoko, I think you will need to find the "no lens" mode to make it work.

johnnyrod
30-12-17, 09:41 AM
Quick one, I spotted the dots in the end, I'd ended up rotating the button at some point, which didn't help!

On t'bay, am going to bid on this 372174887377 shutter is working but slow, also keeping an eye on this 253330619959 been listed once, have asked a load of questions, looks a bit beaten up and short on detail.

Kenzie
30-12-17, 09:48 AM
Get you spotting all the good rangefinders, wouldn't mind one myself. I have got the AF back together and it "seems" ok, I'll leave it sitting for a bit and see. Maybe I didn't dry it off enough. Just read the Ikonta listing, shutter not working. Could be double exposure lock or simply not co-cked.

johnnyrod
30-12-17, 08:23 PM
Also saw this
www.gumtree.com/p/video-camera-accessories/ensign-vintage-camera-bag-film/1281059730
but in Liverpool, looks very nice, combined VF and coupled RF.
Got a reply about the Certo, not much to add to what's in the listing, am thinking on it. Very rare for an RF version to turn up. It has the 64.5 and 6x6 masks though only the former looks original, and there is no knob on the VF to select either format, which mine has (for framing). It's got both sets of red windows though.

Kenzie
30-12-17, 08:35 PM
Why is the lens/shutter off in the picture? Might be worth grabbing it before someone else does! The Certo I mean.

johnnyrod
30-12-17, 09:38 PM
Am wondering that, about grabbing it. The shutter detaches so the body can be used with bellows - you can see the chromed clip sticking up from the camera. Mine does the same. The focusing helicoid comes away with it as a complete unit, which is both a blessing and a curse! I've asked a few more questions.

Kenzie
30-12-17, 09:47 PM
Are the bellows light tight?

johnnyrod
30-12-17, 10:20 PM
Yeah I know. Hopefully getting up to the Peaks for a walk tomorrow, I have a few pics in my Ensign still and a few in the Contessa, should take the Ensign I guess as more chance of landscape pics than anything else. Meant to check the focus of the Kiev tonight but CBA.

Kenzie
31-12-17, 09:43 AM
Its grotty down here today so I doubt we will be going anywhere. We don't have anything as nice as the Peak District around the corner, its too flat! All I get is countryside, waterways and the seaside!

02-01-18, 06:14 PM
Skipped the mess Ikonta, but bought the Certo, it's on its way. A couple more pics the seller sent looked much better than the ones in the listing, and he had more info. Not sure about the shutter blades jamming on top speed, and fingers crossed for the rest. Check the Kiev focus and RF, putting a film in it tonight. Aside from cleaning the film chamber, it's fully working (so far!), not many I get are in that state!

Kenzie

Kenzie

Very dreamy effect from the Rolleicord, not sure if it was my developing or the camera.

I have 2 old cameras that I haven't used for years but both worked OK when I last used them. Offers invited and postage will be £4 on top per camera.

1. Zenit TTL + an additional Prinzflex 1:2.8 F=28mm close up lens. This lens is worth around £25 alone. I could sell the lens seperately if asked.

I may or may not have a couple of Agfa Super Silettes soon, earlier (better looking) version I think. I offered to look at a camera for a member on the rangefinder forum, and he has three, so fix one and keep the others. He is also on the trail of a mint one so has offered to send me all three if he gets a good one. They're not terribly valuable, but two have Soilnar lenses so they should take perfectly good pictures.

You need to ask? He lives somewhere near Manchester so when he had a load of questions I offered to help. He doesn't seem to know much and they were questions like "I think the shutter is too quiet" so stuff you really need to see in person. Yeah, I know, most people think cameras sound like an iphone though, or the sound of a shotgun being pumped in a film, whereas a leaf shutter is almost anticlimactic. I wanted to change the iphone camera sound to a recording of a leaf shutter but it's about a million times harder than in Android.

Kenzie
12-01-18, 08:42 PM
I didn't think about changing my phone shutter sound. I will have to find my best sounding camera and see what I can do. I thought the shutter on tje Kiev and my Zorki 4 are a bit of a let down, so are the XA shutters. Makes them good street shooters thought as they are so quiet.

I think I have seen that before but I will give it another read. Got a bod on a job lot that has an OM2 in it, might need a little work but we'll see.

Article on Maitani is fairly interesting.
Good luck with the 0M2 bid. They tend to go for crazy prices these days. 10% off everything blue Monday flash sale at WYC yesterday but I resisted.
Not doing anything camera related at the moment. I think it's the time of year.

I guess because the weather is so grotty its hard to get out and shoot. If I do, then its usually black and white to make the best of it.

They look good. No need to worry about lens spanner scratches either.

Pretty nifty, I should have put them on my Christmas list! Instead I got two plastic Berties plus another box of liquorice. You know you can get potassium poisoning from that much, and your motor neurones pack up until it flushes out! Peter Andre did the same thing to himself by eating too many bananas.

I didn't win the bundle with the OM2 in it, so the search continues. I tried them out on an Olympus 50mm and the ring came straight out. I can highly recommend them.
How does £20 sound for a Minolta md 28mm f2.8 sound?

The MD lens price sounds good to me. You'd be pushed to get a 50mm f1.7 for £20 these days

I just picked up a Holga 120 GN from Facebook, I also have a junker Ricoh Auto Half on the way as well as a GAF/Ansco Memo ii (rebadged Ricoh Auto Half SE)

No sign of a new year determination to slow down then?
Did you go for the Minolta 28mm by the way?

Kenzie

Well there was but you know how it is! No, I passed on it as I've had a bit of a splurge. I was aiming to buy more film than cameras.

Not 100% sure it works yet, I need to get a pack of film. It was displayed open with the flash on. There is enough juice in the pack to work the flash but not enough to make the film eject. The pack inside is toast anyway. Yoko, you are a Minolta fan http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Minolta_Instant_Pro

I'll give those a miss. Polaroids and instants don't quite do it for me.
I'm selling at the moment. Trying to get rid of things I don't like or won't use. Then I can waste the money on some unnecessary frivolity.

Its a novelty thing for me. I reloaded the film backwards in the pack and it ejects to a certain point, just thing the pack is weak.

Its bigger than it looks, and is a fairly weighty lump. There were other cameras at the centre but this caught my eye.

I bet this will go for a decent amount 192434033380. The Ricoh Auto Half that I was going to use for spares is actually functional, the meter works but it was missing the shutter release. I took the one from the one I was going to repair (dead meter) and made good the new one.

That was lucky - a quick repair.
My thin out has started. I've put a couple of things up for sale and managed to sell a Minolta 70-210 zoom for a reasonable price.

Kenzie

Yeah, I was surprised that the meter works. They are normally dead leaving it in manual mode.

Tidy Super Ikonta! And with all the bits. Most of the model III have a Novar triplet lens, not so many with the Tessar.
