Mine for today, Stu's birthday present was an off road day. I paid to go too but after 2 laps of the little track I had to give up as my elbow couldn't take it. So I hadn't taken a camera, this is just from my phone.

Nice, like the interesting angle, I try to do that but end up messing it up somehow.

Tonight's shot from me is an almost ad-hoc one. I was driving home and passed a harvester just as the light was turning golden. Had to nip home and come back with the camera (still at home after unpacking from holiday, usually it rolls around in the back of the Juke (AKA Brettus' Urban Assault Vehicle) stashed with all my hobby stuff, y'know..... just in case

Turned out OK, not quite as I'd imagined but didn't want to irk the farmers and I'm too shy to bother anyone so stood on the road and got a few shots.

I'd been wanting to get a nice shot of a tractor/agricultural machine at work in a decent setting for a year or two but the opportunity never presented itself at an opportune moment.

The light on that Claas is Class! (See what I did there!) I can almost smell the crop and the dust...

Mine is from our Holiday in Lyme Regis. I've been wanting to try and get the Milky Way for ages, but living in the North West, there's always tons of light pollution that ruins the sky. This year, the plan had been to go to Lulworth Cove and have a go there, but the weather wasn't playing ball. The moon has to be almost none existent to stop it spoiling the image. The middle weekend of the trip looked perfect, the moon was at it's smallest and it was scheduled for clear weather. Come the weekend though, the days were scorching hot and the evenings hazy and unclear. I decided not to bother driving so had a beer and went to the Cobb in Lyme Regis instead which took me less than a five minute walk. I'm not that pleased with the result, the sky was hazy and the Milky Way moved really fast! I was surprised just how much it moved to the point where I decided on a shot, walked around to frame it and the bleeein' thing had wandered off to a different part of the sky! Anyway, here's my first edit, it'll do for a first go I guess.

That's a cracking shot Pete! almost looks like bioluminescence on the waves too. Really jealous, hoping to give it a try in Wales for the August new moon.

You might get away with a desaturating graduated filter from the bottom to remove the yellow light but maybe it is just me that dislikes it in images.

Perhaps 'where is the Wally' it's Monaco. Absolute bedlam. Total gridlock. Tried to drive around the course but its tricky due to road priorities being different. We played top car trumps. Best spot was a 1973 lancia stratus.

not bad at all! think that might top my best phone shot. Perhaps an idea for a thread, showcase your favourite/best (the two aren't mutually exclusive) phone shots.

Amadeus: The unreal look of Richies shot is created from a technique called HDR (High Dynamic Range) when you take a picture generally it balances the shadows, highlights and midtones to give a balanced picture, but there is usually detail in the highlights and shadows (light and dark areas) which if you took the picture under lighter/darker settings would be visible at the expense of one of the other areas.

HDR aims to fix that by taking a highlights shot, midtones shot and a shadows shot (usually they are done with 3 at least, you can do more but 3 seems the minimum) and merges them to give all areas of a photo a good exposure, creating a "flatter" or unreal looking image. This is part of it's attraction though, some people loathe them, some people love them.

Like everything else it is subjective, some look amazing, some look overdone. I often mess it up when I try.

Richie's is a really nice example of a highly stylised one, dialled right up but not to the images detriment.

I'm waffling but I'm prone to that, doubly so when tipsy ;)

Ooh I like that idea, I'll give it a try and see how I manage. I can see myself knocking it on something and dropping it on the floor (I've lost two charges already, was reluctant to buy a replacement but I'm trying to be more careful with this one)

Managed to give myself two small blisters with melted paracord (because of the closeness of the working (and my ineptitude mainly)) but got the hang of it for fusing the last bits together to hold the shape

Mine today was taken at Kensington Palace Gardens. The Org Soho ladies surprised Cazza with afternoon tea for her birthday and this is a shot I set up afterwards and then once I'd got everyone in place and the camera settings perfect I asked a passing Spanish tourist to press the shutter and ran into shot.

After 2 hours I'd managed to travel 8 of the 88 miles of my journey because of accident on the A12 so had to give up and go home as everyone else was already in the pub. Then it took me another 45 minutes to get back through Chelmsford to my home under a mile away because of flash flooding. What an utterly frustrating day.

How did she do? Had fun?

She is very competitive and is usually good at anything she tries her hand to. But it wasn't the case with this activity. She found it very hard adapting to the different layout of controls.

I don't think the instructor helped much either. Nice guy but could only explain a concept in one way.

She did pass and enjoyed it overall but she would have liked to have spent more time on the practise area before going on public roads.

In short a lot to take in and learn in one day.

I went down to watch the off road bit. I took the bike and my son. He laughed so much as we were leaving to go home. I put the bike into gear and it cut out. He thought I stalled it. The side stand was only half up. 😫

You make an valid point. Laura was told that all safety equipment would be provided. So they gave her helmet, gloves and jacket but no boots. We were both annoyed as I have boots in her size sat in my garage but I wasn't aware till I got to the centre.

I'm rather guilty on that front as well. I'm four weeks into a new job and have been reluctant to use the interweb in the office for fun stuff as I don't want them to think their newest contractor is loafing. Can only really catch up at the weekends right now and I've not been out with the camera for a few weeks. Things are settling now so I'll hopefully get back to a nicer balance.

In the mean time keep the pics coming as it's still nice to catch up en masse.

I have a few cameras knocking about the house including a 35mm EOS 10 and a couple of lenses. I stopped using it when digital came along and have used bridge cameras since such as my SX10is.

The problem is that it's quite a bulky camera. Too big to drop into a pocket hence the purchase of the ixus.

Now I find I hardly use the SX10 so it will have to go. Its too much of a compromise. All the bulk of an SLR but the limited functionality of a compact.

So I might treat myself to a canon 700d in the next few weeks. I can then have the best of both worlds a full SLR and the ixus for casual shooting.

I have to agree, I'm always impressed with the shots that our works Cannon Powershot takes.

Its really old now, but it always takes good photo's, so the SX10 must be an improvement on that.

I've still got my old 35mm EOS 100FN & I would like a Cannon DSLR

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg268/kenzie2k3/DSC_0182_zps8cd5549d.jpg (http://s250.photobucket.com/user/kenzie2k3/media/DSC_0182_zps8cd5549d.jpg.html)

I bought a big zoom once only to find the minimum focus distance was far too long. How does this lens fair?

Seems ok so far, haven't really tried anything close up yet. No focus motor in it either so it's all manual. The D3200 does have a range finder in the eyepiece and will show a green dot when in focus which is handy. Minimum focus distance is listed as 1.1m.

It's one of these:

The silence is broken, peace is ruined, I'm back in the room :) Nice to be missed though!

Ch00 nailed it, too much life at the moment, I barely get time to comment let alone contribute.
Not enough time to sit and think of weird ways to test my resolve or risk my limbs in some precarious place.

Ophic, really like that shot, nice portrait, I'm rubbish at people pictures so I like to appreciate them.

Richie, liking all of them but the first most of all. Really like the processing choices and the composition works really well with the juxtaposition (I love using that word) of the relic and the sign for "brand new"

I did get out today though and went to see Chirk Castle, really gorgeous place but I struggle in these highly photographed places to come up with something that I'd want to see. Something a little different, I ended up with two, one is a normal scene that everyone sees but I made sure to shoot it right so I could balance the picture to what I'd seen (and hoped to convey)
I didn't want to HDR it (I'd have struggled to anyway, didn't take my tripod). I took the picture with exposure compensation so that it looked rubbish but had enough of the scenery in and still some detail in the shadows to be able to turn the highlights down and the shadows up and get a decent mix without any conflict like halos in the image.

The second is just a different view point but as Sir_Trev so often shows, it can be a powerful tool with architecture and interiors.

Had to do some heavy handed alterations over on the right as there were some bad flares from the filter I'd got over the lens :(

Got quite a few more shots but they were just documentary ones rather than trying to showcase anything.

The weekend is almost drawing to a close, hope you all made the most of it :drink:

Nice shot Brettus, you could cheat an HDR with one shot. If you shoot raw, you could process and adjust the exposure and save as individual shots. The combine as if they were bracketed.

I went to Bakewell on Saturday the scenic route, rode home the mundane route up the M1.

Saw this

The mundane 50 limit on the M1 was broken up by a group of very expensive cars making amusement of the monotony with each other. I had a play with Ferrari 458, two Audi R8, Maserati GT, a Porche Cayenne, Mercedes C63, and a BMW M5. It was kind of like a GP starter lap for miles. You couldn't get past them, as they were keeping all three lanes for themselves. Once the limit was over they played a little longer, then swiftly disappeared when the detour off the motorway came along.

Evening Matt :)
Had a browse on my phone but needed a proper PC to explain what I mean. I really like this one, crop the edging out from the left and it'll improve it further.

Another really good one, also doesn't have much background, it can be really hard in the garden to not get a distracting background. Vivid colours and good focus make this stand out :)

Love the extreme closeup:

Looks a bit flat somehow but it might well be sorted with some contrast tweaks

I'm always a sucker for fire shots, nice job on the second one, detail in the logs and interesting shapes in the flames.

Top tip is get yourself a free flickr account (or picasa, photobucket etc), great for sharing and seeing others work. I follow quite a few orgers and a smattering of randoms that I've discovered on there. I'm always amazed by the quality (Zunkus is phenomenal BTW, for anyone that isn't following him I'd definitely recommend you check him out: https://www.flickr.com/photos/zunkus) Dropbox is a little unhelpful when trying to share individual images, you can't link them (or at least I couldn't find a way to embed your dropbox ones, I took the liberty of screenshotting them to imgur to post them in the thread for ease of explanation, hope you don't mind.)

Nice work though! keep shooting and sharing!

BP: Liking that DOF!
I rather like your organ shot too (oo-err!)

Cheers Brett,

I grew up near Ludlow, visit there every time I go home, but I've never been into the church! We even managed to get to the top of the tower. Stunning views of the rain coming in from Wales...

Anyhoo, here's my big shiny organ for you.
