My smile today. The local anesthetic at the dentist.
It was chemically induced and rather painful.
I like the look of that Hornettek storage device & it could solve my ISO storage problems too.
I also like the Oppo blu ray, but I don't think there's much point in me getting one, if I can play my Iso files via my network on my media centre PC?
But it sounds like a nice neat solution, as playing ISO files is the way I like to do things too.
the storage device is superb. i'm afraid that if you do get an OPPO it wont play iso as they were forced to withdraw the function so all new ones cant play iso. even most of the bdp-93's are the same due to a sneaky update that was sent out but since i never update my firmware then mine still plays iso. its very very rare that i actually use spinning discs in the OPPO as the moment i get the blu-ray/dvd home i rip it 1-1 iso.
what has caught my eye is the ASUS O!PLAY Mini V2 media player and i will be trying that in the near future ;)
After waiting 2 months to see a consultant, in the two weeks since I have had an MRI scan and a physio appointment. God bless the NHS (when I am actually getting sorted!) :)

well done Jayneflakes .. two wheeled riding always puts a smile on my face.
Thank you. I managed a short ride, but the old pain kicked in and I retired to the comfy chair! However blasting along the road on my MTB really did put a big grin on my face and a satisfying burn in my thigh muscles. :p
If I can manage a few more of these trips, I may even be able to remove the tonnage of spare tyre currently sat on my hips like a colossal pair of poo filled granny knickers! :smt036
So lots to smile about. :D
I am also re-reading Northern Lights by Philip Pullman and that makes me smile too, I love those books.

Slow and easy Jayne, but gentle exercise will help promote better mobility.
A colleague of mine had a ruptured disc in his back, he was off sick for nearly 2 months. A couple of epidurals fixed his sciatica, but a program of yoga, core strength exercises and physio has meant he is back to full fitness.
He was lucky, as his sister is a physio and was able to give him intensive physio free of charge, which is something not everyone can afford to pay for & the NHS will only give the minimum of treatment.

This is true, because I have a collection of injuries, rather than one single, I have a lot to deal with. Sadly some of them were caused by my career as a Mountain Bike Guide, Climbing Instructor and Mountain Leader, lots of wear and tear, damage from injuries that never healed, major groin surgery that did not fully work (no not a bladder job for Ketamine addiction!) and then the accident at work put the nail in the coffin. However I am a belligerent old bag and I will be out on my bike again soon, because long before I got into motorbikes, I was a mountain biker and I always will be.
He was lucky, as his sister is a physio and was able to give him intensive physio free of charge, which is something not everyone can afford to pay for & the NHS will only give the minimum of treatment.
I was somewhat let down by my local hospital when it came to physio, they offered accupuncture rather than actual treatment and it did nothing. My complaints about it doing nothing were met with the comment that I had to give it more time. In the mean time the injury got worse every time I moved my arm. Finally I won my court case against the people who caused the stack to collapse on me and I was able to visit a private practice in Thailand and the difference was noticeable.
It hurt like hell, often made me cry with pain and being told to move to my arm and shoulder was the complete opposite of that what I was told by my hospital in the UK.
The big grin factor came when I was able to have treatment every day for a month in Thailand for the same as it cost to have treatment here in the UK for a week. Also my physio over there Usara, was super hot!
:smt077:smt077:smt077:smt077
Sadly back here, treatment is beyond what I can afford, but I am improved over what I was. My plan is to be back on my bike, back on my motorbike and hopefully back in work next year. I am off so many meds that it is unreal and I am super happy about it all. :D

My smile of the day, (OK yesterday)
Potato soup.
After a second round of flu in two weeks Thursday I was back at work on Friday but unable to eat much.
Arrived home and the wife asked if I was hungry, I said yes but can't find anything that I can eat.
She was on the phone with a mate who suggested potato soup and gave her the recipe.
In no time she whipped up some delicious soup like Mum used to make, only better.
In fact was the best potato soup I' ve ever hsd on her first attempt. That girl can cook!
Thinking of pretending to still be ill this evening. Maybe she'll make some more!

Putting my 10 month old grandson to sleep.
We have a special bond that I believe came from when he was in the hospital awaiting a heart transplant earlier this year.
It was three weeks before he could be held and at that time even visiting him might be limited to 2 or 3 15 minute periods
sometime during a 24 hour period, that includes parents.
I happened to be there the first day they would let him be held.
My son had just held him for about five mins. for the very first time when I arrived.
We got suited up (the entire surgeons kit) and went back to see him.
He held him again for about 10 mins. His Mum was afraid to hold him as he was quite tiny,
breathing on the ventelator and had about 100 wires and tubes hooking him to a dozen or so machines
and 2 IV's so holding him was a bit daunting, so's she lets me be next.
He wiggled around a bit till he got comfortable and then snuggled up against me and layed his head on my chest.
I told my son look he's listening to my heart beat.
My son leaves and goes to find my wife (who had gone to take some things to their apartment) so she could hold him
and I was left alone holding him for about 15 mins. when the nurse returned and told me time was up. But he had fallen asleep
so I convinced the nurse it would be less stressful to let him sleep rather than to wake him up just to put him back in the bed.
She said "he looks like he's resting comfortably I'll give you a while longer" which ended up being another 30 mins.
When he woke up on his own she put him back in the bed.
The wife missed out but she like his Mum was afraid the first few days to hold him, he was quite pitiful at the time,
hooked to all that stuff, his little heart beating double time and gasping for every breath even on the venelator.
But none of that seemed to bother me I was comfortable holding him no matter what.
A few weeks later he had the transplant and was what the Docs say was one of the quickest recoveries ever.
He still has to take medicine but to look at him now you'd never know he wasn't just another healthy child.
Now he reaches for me to take him whenever he see's me.
When no one else can calm him down, all I have to do I hold him.
He spends the nights here often on the weekends, like this one.
He loves watching animated Christmas movies and when he's tired he wants to sit in my lap and watch them.
He'll watch for a while and when he's ready to go to sleep, he lays his head on my chest and listens to my heart beat.
I really love being with him and putting him to sleep is the icing on the cake!
That is my smile of the day, of the year, and maybe more.

Seeing old friends I hadn't seen for years on Friday and having a good old chat & bumping into another one today.
Bananaman, that brought back memories from 34 years ago. My daughter was born with no pulmonary valve from the heart to the pulmonary artery, had 3 holes in her heart and needed emergency surgery just to keep her alive. How she reached 3 weeks before surgery astounded the doctors. A connection between the aorta and the pulmonary artery was all that was keeping her going and it should have closed within a couple of days after the birth.
To see her lying there with drain tubes coming out of her stomach and her ribs stitched up was heartbreaking. She was so sick, she couldn't be removed from the ventilator so we couldn't hold her and cuddle her. I have to admit, I just stood in the corridor after the doctor told us the surgery had gone well and just broke down, crying. And we had to go through it all again 4 years later when she had the final corrective surgery. The good news is that she has not had to go under the knife again.
One of the proudest days of my life was when we watched her graduate from uni with a good degree.

That is just so beautiful, thank you for sharing your story with us. :D

Wow, Thanks to everyone who liked my post.
See, I'm not a miserable old git all of the time. ;)
Heorot thanks for sharing your experiences as well.
34 years ago I'm sure infant heart surgery was at least 1000 times more risky than today.
Going through it again a second time has got to be tough.
Glad everything turned out the best for your daughter!
There's a good chance my grandson may need another heart transplant when he reaches his early teens
so we may be going through it all again as well.
However there is 20+ year old lad who lives about 30 miles away that's still on the heart he got as an infant in the same hospital.
That and hope in medical advances in the next 11 to 15 years and maybe our grandson won't have to have another transplant, we hope.
He's doing well now and we're still very thankful for that!

This photo made me laugh, it's an Aussie friend who took his kids to Santa's Grotto, they don't seem that impressed.

Thank you all who appreciated my story.. It was an experimental operation at Great Ormond Street hospital and we were told that she would probably need the surgery repeated by the time she hit 16yo. So far, so good.

If you can catch this article before they realise and update it - the photos and narrative go out of sync from photo 7 to photo 60 making for some very interesting captions - the lovely Kate O'Mara looking much rougher than I remember, and as for Bob Hoskins...

With the improvement in US - Cuba relations, then maybe the trade restrictions will be lifted, although its not going to happen overnight.
getting ready to cook chrimo dinner :-)
glad i waited to get my turkey last minute as they were less than half price at Asda and so were the duck so i got both plus a guinea fowl coz i do like a bit of guinea fowl :-)

Apart from seeing my children open their presents, my wife was dumbstruck by getting a pair of new shoes she'd wished for on Faceache. She didn't think she'd get them, as i don't have a Facearse account, but one of her friends had sent me a screen shot, so that was nice.

Apart from the kids having a great time this morning, my smile was the look on Mrs BP's face when she saw this.

Thank you Meg Ghyll, you pulled a blinder!
