York Suzuki Centre have 2 Suzuki GT500 twin 2 stroke bikes in the shop as well as a 750 triple 'kettle'. Almost tempted by a GT500 but I don't know about 2 strokes nowadays - are they still allowed on the road ?!

Yes. Parts availability can be an issue especially exhausts unless you want chambers. Some run better if the squish angle is changed in the head. Have the crank seals been changed (and by whom)? Then there's 50 year old carbs and ethanol petrol - the bikes benefit from regular use. It's worth spending a bit of time on a related two stroke forum if you're serious. I've always liked Yamaha two strokes so I often go here:

My 380 had 5 or 6 years running on E5 without problems, but the switch to E10 could prove problematic for inlet rubbers, etc. Suzuki's 70s twins and triples didn't have squish bands in the heads, unlike Yams and Kawas, which may explain why the engines seem to tolerate modern fuel better.
The original outer crank seals on the 380 failed after 37 years, bloody Jap crap ;)
Read on twitface that Lynn who used to run Raven cafe had to leave premises when owner of building wanted his family in there, she opened the Pheonix cafe a few miles away - have not been to Pheonix, does anyone know what it is like ?
A bike cafe did open up on the B5476 just south of Whitchurch on a site occupied by a garage. I think it was called the phoenix. It's gone again now as they had lots of protests by local residents even though there's no housing for miles. I guess the local nimby's were worried about hoards of noisy bikers terrorising the area. It wasn't a big affair just a couple of cabins really.

Don't think I am serious about old 2 strokes really, was just interested.
What I am tempted by ,at least looking into it further , is a Suzuki Burgman 650, for a bit of comfort ! I couldn't contemplate riding a traditional scooter but the Burgman is a bit like a touring motorcycle.

Used to work with an engineer who had inherited a Burgman 400 from his dad, now the guy said he was surprised how well it went and handled - the bloke normally rode an R1 .... I would read up about 650 vs 400 Burgman because i have seen comments that in 90% of situations the 400 is actually a better ride than the 650 and better MPG.

My bro-in-law had a 400 for his commute. He said the acceleration from a standing start was more than enough to win the traffic-light GP 99% of the time, because it was so accessible.
Road tests put the 0 to 60 at 8.5 seconds, and you can do that any time you want, just twist and go.

No, my name isn't Geoff but thanks for the comments. The comments so far on the Burgman seem to be pretty good. The seat upholsterer and me came to the conclusion that my a*rse is too big for the sv650A seat ,but a lighter thinner person would probably be ok, especially with the gel insert he put in.

I think the engine is basically the same as the NC700X that I had which was pretty dull. My Honda dealer salesman himself wasn't exactly enthusiastic about it when I mentioned it to him a while ago, but he tells it like it is (or at least how he thinks it is ) in relation to bikes I might like. They do look quite good though.

I shouldn't be a boring b*****d and spoil the fun but how do you find the seat height and the screen on these sort of bikes ?
Adam Ef
03-05-21, 02:53 PM
It is high by comparsion to other bikes but the seat height was ok for me. Slightly lower than my DRZ which I can't get flat footed on. I'm almost flat footed on the Tenere. Seat comfort was a different matter though. Screen height was slightly wrong for me. There are options though. I had a good hour on it. Enough to be realistic about what was right and wrong and overall the right things about it made up for few issues.

Should have gave in earlier than I did. 2/4 bolts came out with relative ease, one needed prolonged impacting and the other was set on fire. The discs were badly lipped and starting to crumble so it was just in time! The rear pads/discs can wait until I'm on holiday again, at least now I have made the job easier for myself.
*I believe this is the first time the car has had new discs, perhaps also new pads. The air and oil filters +spark plugs were definitely put in by Nissan on the line.

I've found myself wanting tank grips, though not keen on the price of techspec or stomp grips.
I found Eazi-grip (not the R&G ones - not sure what if any relationship there is there) and they seem a relative bargain. They do three versions though and I was struggling to decide, so I shot them off an email yesterday and today I've received three good-sized offcut samples in the post, FOC.
So my SOTD is great service - going out of the way to help out a small customer before I've even spent any money with them.
FWIW, I have zero affiliation. All three samples seem like excellent material - I'll take the weekend to decide before ordering.

SOTD - new toy arrived yesterday.
GOTD - 1st attempted delivery and the battery was flat, it went back and returned with a new one fitted.
GOTD 2 - it was a shame to see the street triple go, I’ve had it for 12 years and enjoyed every ride.
GOTD 3 - It’s absolutely lashing down so I don’t fancy learning a new bike in this.
SOTD 2 - I’ll try and get out tomorrow, time to grow old disgracefully.

I've got them on mine, they aren't as good as the stomp grips I had before but are fine. Partially due to my positioning of them as they're smaller than stomp grips and in my opinion the ones I have don't suit the lines as well as the stomps I had. If it wasn't for the pain in the **** of the left over adhesive when you remove them I'd be taking them off and swapping them/moving them.
I remember the customer service being great too. Bet it's transformed the bike if it's the first time you've had grips!
I've often wondered about tank grips, there's plenty of riding tips about gripping the tank on social media. It's interesting that lots of classic bikes used to come with them as standard.

They are excellent. They were anbsolute revelation to me, I now hate riding bikes without them. Mine fell off in the heat in Spain and it annoyed me on every corner/brake application on the way home.

A lot of the old Brit bikes had them including my inherited Trummy 3TA. Was it for more control or to protect the inside of the knees from cold shock? The likes of the 3TA were made to be an all weather ride to work bike, and I can remember the difference when wrapping my knees around a 'naked' tank!
Sir Trev
08-05-21, 03:36 PM
I rather like the tank pads on my T100. I put a Bagster cover on my GSX-F, partly to help grip the tank better, and found that the naked tank on my curvy needed constant waxing to prevent paint wear.
First ride of 2021 and the first after breaking my wrist. :D I did about 30 miles on the SV and, as expected, my wrist ached after a short while, more noticeable was the brief intense pain when straightening my fingers to grab the brake. Part of that might be due to the foam grips I have on the SV which means I have to grip the throttle tightly - I'll know better when I take the Zed out. I've always had a bad habit of gripping the bars too tightly, anyway.
The SV has been behind a plastic sheeting partition (with the Zed) and a dehumidifier in my garage - there was no staining or discoloration of the stainless headers after 5 months and the Suzuki fired up immediately. I was pleasantly surprised that the tyres hadn't lost any pressure either.

Eazi-grip are OK, but don't get the clear ones - you will never get the bubbles and stress marks in plastic out. I fitted clear to my AL7 and took them off a few months after because of the marks in them.

I've had two sets of Eazi-grips - the first set which is still attached to the SV petrol tank in my garage. Black EVO grips.
And the second set were on my GSXR - Clear EVO.
The clear was a big mistake, the air bubbles were a nightmare.

I've ordered the black "Pro" (small bumps) Eazi-Grips this morning. Not exactly scientific, but I dragged them each across my leathers with a little pressure and the Pro seemed to grip the best.
EDIT: I did email the guy from the US on the svrider forum who was making tank grips - unfortunately he's no longer making them and has no plans to start again.

The thing that most textile / kevlar jeans miss out on are Kneepads ( although newer ones do have facility to fit them ). I am a fair weather biker these days and have worn Kevlar lined jeans for last 10 years and find them much more user friendly than the bulky sweaty variety of motorcycle legwear. I never deliberately ride in rain anyway and find the Jeans warm enough most of the time, on colder days ( less than 10 deg C ) a pair of base layer pants helps, especially the ones with reinforced knees.

True, some places do refer to them this way - and includes leathers in there too for some reason.

I did find that my legs felt more free, compared to my normal textiles leg wear. It was only about 10 degrees when i was out, and i put base layers on just in case. These jeans have Knee & Hip armour - i would not have gone for any which did not have this option/capability.

Finally had my multi-parametric MRI last night. What's a mpMRI I hear you ask? It's like a regular MRI only you have a needle in your arm, that was a bit of an anticlimax after a name like that.
The steel town whose name isn't allowed by the censors (starts with Sc and ends in thorpe) hospital has very little parking so I arrived 2 hours early and, of course, there was ample parking. I go in anyway and find out there's been a "no-show" and I get the scan immediately. Win!
For those who haven't had an MRI - it's like lying perfectly still in a metal sewer pipe that is slightly bigger than your body (and I'm small) whilst somebody hits it with a heavy hammer at varying rates for 45 minutes. They at least used to you play music over headphones but because of covid (cleaning) you now just get earplugs. 45 minutes of hammer percussion gets a little boring.

On another (temporary) smile, I received a $1400 cheque from the US Treasury department as an "Economic Impact Payment". Unfortunately, it's a mistake since I submitted an I-407 form which is a voluntary surrender of my Green Card which disallows me from the stimulus payment. The minor gripe is that if I don't tell them they'll send another in 6 months and it can get a little ugly after that. No, but I collect US Social Security (US gov pension) and they would put a lien against it, plus I have a 401K investment (you pay in whilst working and the company matches your payment) it's tax free until withdrawal and then you get dinged a minimum 20% tax by the fund managers which I then have to claim back because of a UK/US tax agreement - that too can have a lien put on it. The IRS doesn't mess around with individuals - only US corporations can fiddle the books.

It flickered a few times and went dead on me just before Christmas and I've only now got it fixed, partly because the repair place I wanted to use would not allow walk-in's during Covid lockdown, only courier deliveries. Second AZ jab yesterday which is a relief to get, but...
Last night was the worst I can remember feeling for a long time. Passing out in bed by 8pm but stuck in half asleep shivering and hot / cold limbo for hours. Eventually slept properly gone 1am. Possibly complicated by having had a sore throat and sniffle come on a day before the jab, but I definitely think I had a reaction. Feeling sligtly less volatile this morning but a bit wiped out from a difficult night of half sleep. Working today. Really don't feel like it but I can't get out of it.

Second jab now done. It took place at a little pharmacy and I asked the pharmacist how many jabs he'd given and he said over 7000. I thought it sounded tedious but he said he loved doing it.
Wonder how much he got paid for giving each jab !

Got out this morning in an unexpected dry window. Got to the Raven caff near Whitchurch - very quiet, if there were more than a dozen bikes I'd be surprised.
i had a good weekend in the West Country. A decent ride down (dry, with some sunshine even!), met up with some old/new faces & enjoyed a few Ciders.
The way back yesterday was mostly windy & soggy, but at least it gave me a chance to test my new over proofs. Which worked wonders keeping me dry, warm and comfortable the 5 hour journey home.
Next trip will be the Highlands in 4 weeks time.

Dominic Cummings' warpath
Not checked the news in a while, found it an amusing (sort of) read.
It's really not hard to find out how much

I found none of what he said surprising. More of a confirmation they (the Government) were as unprepared and clueless as we suspected, and Matt Hancock is well & truly an incompetent ****.
Personally, i think an inquiry would be a waste of money. Regardless of the outcome nothing will change or happen to rectify the errors made, or to remove people from positions of power.
the bike being back to its usual superbness. i love my bike :-)
on another note, how to make strawberry jam. buy a punnet of strawberries and put them in your topbox then go for a ride.
ooohh did i tell you that i love my bike :-)

Ears cleared of wax by microsuction at district hospital. What a relief. Thank you NHS. Now to have hearing tested again at last.

Yes, a lot of that seems to be the case with enquiries.

Insurance. I saved myself £710 today, and it only took me a couple of hours.

Ears need to be clear of wax before having hearing tested.
Microsuction cleared ears wednesday , had hearing tested today and audiologist adjusted my hearing aid to suit the present state of my hearing. I had been waiting a long time for appointment with audiologist to test my hearing. Trust this is clear. (my explanation that is ,my hearing is clearer )

Yes, I think they simply didn't want me - I put all my details into MCN compare and they were one of the companies which didn't quote. I've no idea why.

Got my oldest textiles yesterday, he'd pinched his mums boots and gloves and we got a helmet given to us from the dealer when I got the Superduke.
His response...can we go to Scotland tomorrow?
Heading out for a bimble later today, it's good to share this selfish hobby again.

Yup Bibs as a pillion, he’s 11. Used to go out with the wife before kids came along but she never wanted to go far.
We went to a cafe an hour and a half away and he loved it. Now wants to go out every weekend and is looking forward to longer runs.
Got to make the most of these things whilst you can, they grow up fast and I just can’t get into the Xbox nonsense he plays.

I'm knackered, my @rse is in a coma, my limbs ache, but I'm still grinning from the 270-odd miles around the Llyn Peninsula and Snowdonia in gorgeous sunshine. The roads were quite busy but that didn't get in the way too much :)

Craig I am going green with envy - Did the Lyn Peninsula in the mid 70s on a knackered Trummy 3TA - it was quieter then which made it better, Before Covid we stayed on the Peninsula in the m/home and cycled miles around -wonderful!

Same here, my dad only had bikes when I was young (mostly a Honda CB77) so there was no way that I wasn't going to get into bikes myself.
Although back then, riding gear was an open-face helmet and my school anorak, which I don't think had CE-approved armour ...

SOTD from Sunday, but only getting around to posting it now. On Sunday afternoon I did the observed ride part of Bikesafe (provided locally by Cambs police). I was weirdly nervous about it, but it was enjoyable, we had perfect weather, traveled some roads I'd not been on before, and of course most importantly, some really useful/constructive advice on how I might ride more safely. £65 well spent :smt023

I could well have, I need to get on more of the IAM rides this year anyway so it'll be good for him to come along. My Grandad used to have a bike as transport and a similar thing happened for me, although I had to wait until I was 21 to get going myself.

Jeans, an old leather jacket, a an old helmet (before we knew how to get one that fitted properly) and someone else's gloves. Oh and don't forget to wear your Cats, as trainers aren't safe.
His gear is surprisingly good, it's come on a lot and easily exceeds my first textiles from 2008 in quality...not a bad price either.

SOTD - Checking in here as I occasionally do and seeing a resurgence from several of the posters who made the place so interesting, appealing and helpful when I first arrived back in late 2007.
Hope still there that this sort of forum space isn't totally lost to the world of Facebook etc.
