Quit my job today, fudging brother in law. Fingers crossed I now don't have to see the plonka very often.
Still it meant I got to go for a nice run in the sunshine.

I am enrolled on a plumbing course that starts in Jan, hopefully it'll lead to something else. I was supposed to be working a little longer, but quitting today couldn't be helped. He's a grade A+ tosser.
I have a list of jobs to do at home, that I never had time for. Once I have concoured these I will look into some kind of Chrimbo temp work. Luckily I have a little savings and my wife is really busy with her work. So there is a little wiggle room.
Who knows, if it doesn't work out I'll come up with another plan until it does.
But at least I am free!!!

A job as a plumber presumably. Isn't there a shortage of qualified plumbers ?
As well as other skilled tradespeople (or what ever the correct terminology is nowadays !)
Good luck anyway.

Good on ya SG. I was so relieved when I walked away from a toxic job, even though my plan B was not thought out in any way. Your mental wellbeing is worth looking after and sometimes a clean break is the best action.

I had a swollen knee last year, went to the doc, who was formerly a knee specialist, he said it'd go down of its own accord. Didn't believe him, but true enough it did.
Hope yours improves Gary

My car now has a towbar. I can get a cycle rack to fit on it now instead of hurting my back hoisting the bikes up to the roofbar carriers. Hoorah. If Lady Poppy and I get the e-bikes we've been promising ourselves we can also cart them off to places too as the car would not be happy with around 60kg of rails/carriers/bikes on the roof.
Another smile is I got chatting to the sales guys at the dealership while the towbar was being fitted as its nearly time to replace the other car. Thanks to the semiconductor supply issues our current cars are worth a crazy amount. In "normal" times a seven year old Focus would get me c£5k in trade in but I can expect almost £10k at the moment. Madness! My three year old Focus had a list price of almost £30k (I bought it as a six month old used one) is still worth at least £20k... Although that's partly because it's a rare as hens teeth petrol estate automatic, according to the sales guy. The manufacturers assume everyone wants crossover things instead now, which I don't. It's a mad world.

Just had a video consultation with a really helpful chap at the CMATS department about my knee. Been given some exercises to do, and had reassurance that aside from some maturation of the knee joint there is no damage. I have the all clear to start running again, gently initially, but building up again to my previous level.
Just done the exercises and my knee already feels looser again. :-)

What is CMATS ? I would be interested in exercises for my knee but the chance of being referred to a physiotherapist ,assuming I could get to see a doctor , seem very remote !

I suspect the reason older low tech cars are going up in price is because there is massive amount of annoying features on newer models. My brother spends 10 minutes before every journey disabling stuff...

Heh, I know how he feels. On my last three company cars, I would disable the auto stop/start and traction control immediately after firing up the engine.

i'm the opposite. i want all the safety gadgets. in a car i just want to go from AtoB and not drive like a looney. i'm more than capable of controlling a car in emergency situations and if there are built in features in the car to help me than all the better. ask any F1 driver if they want better electronic driving control/aids they will say yes please.
stop/start is simply awesome, why anyone would want to turn it off is beyond me. same goes for traction control and abs. its learning to drive with these features that is the real challenge, but once you do learn you will wonder how you lived without them.
each to their own and all that...
Unobtrusive safety features are broadly speaking welcomed and have been responsible for a significant part of the reduction in road deaths (from air bags, safety cage structures, crumple zones, antilock braking, to stability control etc).
The systems which seem to be causing issues are the intrusive ones, especially the latest level of lane/road departure etc which tug at the steering when the car assesses that you are leaving either a marked lane or the edge of the road. The classic one which is leading to complaints on the Honda Jazz forum seems to be when on narrow country roads etc and the car decides you are pulling too close to the nearside (usually when meeting an oncoming vehicle) and the car wants to steer into the middle of the road, into the path of the oncoming car. Sure you can override it but it can be unnerving by all accounts.
Similarly there are active anti-collision systems which may or may not behave properly when approaching traffic ahead for example, some people are commenting that when active it doesn't always react and you end up very close to the car in front. Fine if the driver is on the ball but the very nature of these systems is that they lead the driver to think they can relax and let the car do the speed/distance regulation.
Active speed limit control will be a problem as/when it becomes a standard. Often cars now will see speed limit signs on adjacent roads and react, my car uses a camera to recognise standard speed limit round signs and shows it on the panel display, it's very useful but not totally reliable. Plenty of cases of a car seeing a sign on a service road etc beside a motorway and saying the speed limit has dropped to 30mph. Fine if it just shows a warning, but bad if it decides to slow the car down suddenly.
A dilemma is that most of these "safety" systems are on by default when starting the car, you cannot de-activate them as a persistent setting, only on an individual trip basis. If you live in a rural area and need to switch off the road departure system because of the false activations etc, it means a tedious "pre-flight" procedure of menus and selections every time. That's just annoying, it might be considered a good idea to have these systems on by default, but it's a pain in the harris in real world use.
Any system which can affect the steering, brake or accelerator can potentially upset the control by the driver and has to be very carefully implemented. If they have shortcomings it can affect the willingness of drivers to accept them.

each to their own and all that...I'm much the same. I don't drive the car particularly fast (it's not fast anyway). On the otherhand I don't completely rely on all the aids such as the rear camera and parking sensors, my inbuilt sensors do a better job but it's nice to have backup for that one time you're distracted and fail to see little Jimmy as you reverse out of the drive.

For example if the car suddenly brakes because it missreads a road sign and you get hit from behind, or decides to position you in the path of an oncoming car. Who gets the blame?

Sore point with me at the moment. My car is a 12 year old (only 16,500 miles ) BMW 1 series basic model ,so doesn't have all the bells and whistles ,but recently flashed warning symbol for problem with dynamic steering control which has been diagnosed as something to do with the steering angle sensor. I didn't even know it had these features but apparently the repair involves the replacement of a switch unit incorporating the steering angle sensor and the part alone costs about £400. I was sceptical about the need for some of these things but I now understand the steering reacts to input by the driver depending on the speed of the vehicle , so at slow speed a turn of the wheel has more effect than at high speed on the motorway for example where a drastic change of direction could be dangerous (or something like that, or maybe I have got it all wrong !)
Sir Trev
22-11-21, 07:18 PM
Thankfully the lane keeping aid on my Focus remains in the setting last selected (off in my case). Used to have it in warning mode which vibrates the wheel but I found it irritating - did not bother trying the "active" setting that tries to steer for you.
Adaptive cruise control makes motorway driving easier so I use that a lot but you need to be wary if some git cuts you up as it really anchors on the brakes if it gets worried! I keep the pedals covered at all times just in case.
And the traffic sign reading is getting better. My current Focus does not spot the speed limiter stickers you often get on European lorry trailers and tell me I'm in a 100mph zone, unlike my last Focus.

Found the little hedgehog we've been nurturing prone on the lawn this morning. He's too small to hibernate and our efforts to feed him up haven't really worked. He was still just alive but likely hypothermic, so Mel took him to the vet. They will warm him up and see if he can be revived. He'll go to the hedgehog rescue if he does.
Now have a vacant hedgehog house :(

I've had mine for a while now although I didn't apply for it straight away when I turned sixty. I don't use it that much (not many buses around here sadly) but it's useful when I do need to. I can also use it on certain Transport for Wales trains to get free travel between October and March.

Why not in England now? Had mine a while now in England. We can only use ours in England. Wonder if Scotland, Wales and NI can use theirs in England.

Just been on a cultural tour of Leicester, with friends, using mine (pi-s up) would not travel any other way! (Not if I intended to sample a few anyway)
Trouble with that is I would need to get off the bus to have a p**s !

From the TfW website:
Your (Welsh) Concessionary Travel Card is valid on all eligible bus services that operate in Wales, including those commencing/terminating at points adjacent to Wales, provided that the cross-boundary journey doesn’t involve a change of bus in England. You can also use selected rail services operating in Wales.
Please be aware you can’t use your card on coach services such as National Express, Megabus or City Sightseeing. However, companies may offer discounts to Concessionary Travel Cardholders.
I got to ride! I took the SV out, it was 13°C, the roads were wet but then the sun came out. I know we are a few months from spring (and there are still 9 days to the Solstice) but it felt like spring. I only rode 35 miles but it's amazing how it lifts the spirits. 50 years of riding and it still hasn't got old.

nope.
Scotland is free travel on buses anywhere in Scotland. some districts also have concessionary rail and subway. islands get two free ferry tickets a year.
just over english border places like berwick upon tweed and carlisle also count for free buss.
i get concessionary (£1) off peak (station to station) rail in fife. e.g. i can go from kirkcaldy to st andrews for £1 then somewhere else from st andrews for £1 so on and so on. i can go to inverkeithing for £1 then to edinburgh for £2.55 (£3.55 total) which would otherwise be £4.60. i think "on fife border" places such as dundee, kinross, perth also counts as £1 rail.
as far as i'm aware there are loads of other benefits in fife/scotland such as ticket entry to historic scotland with blue badge etc.etc.

Yes, Scotland does seem to get better deals on things than we do in England; student fees being an obvious case.
When I went from near Edinburgh to Fort William on an AA breakdown truck when the car broke down while we were on one of our many holidays in Scotland a few years ago, the AA driver was on his way back home up to Thurso and he was telling us he toured up and down the west coast by train because he got some sort of concession.
in some ways Holyrood does a far better job than Westminster. Scotland has free prescriptions and student fees along with as said above and a whole host of other stuff. ooohhh and Scotland has to do it on a measly, crappy budget of £50bill.

Don't know how the financing works, isn't it something to do with a
'Barnet' 'formula ?!

sort of. you have to remember though that NI get more per head.
Scotland raises a lot of capital at home so getting less and less reliant on Westminster for handouts. if England suffers financially then so do the other three members. you also have to remember that if Westminster borrows NI and Scotland get nowt of that but are still held responsible for the debt... does the Barnet formula sound like a good deal now?
just think what Scotland would do with a raise in tax of say 2p.. our NHS would be the best in the world even though its already the best in the UK ;)
England and Wales share the same currency while NI and Scotland have their own. fun fact though is that the Scottish pound is not legal tender anywhere including Scotland that also includes the GBP. Scotland has no tender and is still as far as i know under the "barter" system. this is one of the main reasons that Scotland wants independence but it would break the BOE due to every note printed in Scotland has to have the same kept at the BOE for security if Scotland gained its own tender the BOE would have to reimburse the Scottish banks who would then have to keep it in a new holding bank sort of like the BOE in England. one of the big arguments about having a Scottish legal tender is name and value.. well it can be called a Scottish Pound and it would be based on Scotlands GDP like any other country.
With all due respect Bibio, most of that’s pish.

Made it out on the bike today. Had my regular 6 monthly hospital appointment. A mix of drizzle, sunshine, and fog but still good to be out on the bike.
Now though... (http://forums.sv650.org/showpost.php?p=3133961&postcount=10310)

More income has been devolved to Scotland rather than being collected centrally. That might seem like semantics but it’s important to the debate in Scotland IMO

When Westminster borrows we spend it on (1) things that benefit us all such as defence or (2) it gets spent in England (or England and Wales). If the latter, the Barnett Formula calculates how much is due to the devolved parliaments. So if we borrow to increase funding for the NHS in England, there is a consequential increase in the block grant to Scotland, Wales and NI. Our devolved parliaments can then decide how to spend it - we don’t need to spend it on health. We may choose to have things like free care, bus passes or higher education and spend less on the police and cancer drugs, for example. We have done this in Scotland. Much is said of the free stuff, little is said about the other side of those choices. But such is politics.
just think what Scotland would do with a raise in tax of say 2p.. our NHS would be the best in the world even though its already the best in the UK ;)
Questionable. A wealth generating economy might be a better goal. Scotland already has the highest income tax rates in the UK but the benefits of that aren’t too obvious. Squeezing the same small fruit doesn’t generate much more juice.
England and Wales share the same currency while NI and Scotland have their own.
No we don’t. We all use GBP/pound Sterling. Retail banks in Scotland and NI can print notes but the currency is the same.
fun fact though is that the Scottish pound is not legal tender anywhere including Scotland that also includes the GBP.
No paper notes are legal tender in Scotland. Minted Pound Coins are legal tender and they’re all produced on behalf of the Bank of England. It doesn’t mean anything for your day to day life. Shops aren’t obliged to take anyone’s money anywhere.
Scotland has no tender and is still as far as i know under the "barter" system.
No. We’re definitely using money. :)
this is one of the main reasons that Scotland wants independence
According to most polling, Scotland doesn’t want independence. A large minority do but I don’t think that currency is one of the main reasons. Sovereignty and democratic accountability seem to be more important and, for some, history and tradition. Currency is however one of the main questions.
but it would break the BOE due to every note printed in Scotland has to have the same kept at the BOE for security if Scotland gained its own tender the BOE would have to reimburse the Scottish banks who would then have to keep it in a new holding bank sort of like the BOE in England. one of the big arguments about having a Scottish legal tender is name and value.. well it can be called a Scottish Pound and it would be based on Scotlands GDP like any other country.
Our money isn’t backed by anything. Most of it has never existed in cash form, Scottish notes or otherwise.
The choices for an Independent Scotland would be;
- use GBP within a currency union with rest of UK (hard to see what’s in that for rUK)
- use GBP without a formal union. You can use anyone’s currency - you don’t need permission. You do lose control or even input over monetary policy such as interest rates and probably would need to accept some supervision by BOE which might seem an unacceptable loss of sovereignty
- use a new free floating Scottish currency. Some uncertainty and potential volatility risks as well as problems of debt held in GBP and income in a Scottish pound. Exchange rate volatility can be a threat and an opportunity
- in time join the EU and use the Euro
I think in any of those situations the Bank of England would manage fine. :D
Sorry, this has derailed the Smile of the Day a bit so I’ll add, heated grips. Took the MT09 for its MOT last week. Heated grips are cool ;)

i cant remember the link of where i found the information but it was buried deep in Gov BOE text. due to Scotland not having a legal tender they still remain on a barter system, there was a court case here in Kdy about a second hand shop keeper refusing to barter for furniture with a customer. the customer won the case.
you may use notes in daily life but they are worthless just like everything you own unless you want to trade it for some sheep.
thanks for clarifying Westminster borrowing :-)

OK. The Scottish banks keep BOE banknotes to back-up their own cash in circulation. In the event of independence, Scottish retail banks (which aren’t really Scottish anymore in any real sense) would lose the right to print sterling.
If Scotland chooses to continue using sterling the issuing banks would need to exchange the Scottish notes with their supply of English ones.
I still don’t see the problem this gives the BOE.

Even with VAR refs often can't see they have been conned by a player falling down in the penalty area.

if Scotland gained its own legal tender then the BOE owes the new holding bank in Scotland the deposits they hold for the three note issuing banks in Scotland. the problem is, i very much doubt that the BOE has the reserves to do so. why do you think the Gov bailed out RBS.
Sterling is a Scottish thing as far as i know. the BOE notes only promise to pay the bearer on demand they do not state what they promise to pay.
if the Gov want us all to be stronger together then its about time they issue a UK wide legal tender.
in day to day life it does not matter its only when/if Scotland gain indy there would need to be a legal tender for trading etc.etc.
.... the BOE notes only promise to pay the bearer on demand they do not state what they promise to pay.
.....
The BOE fiver in my pocket says
"Bank of England"
"I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of five pounds"
and signed by the Chief Cashier.
What's the confusion?

things !

Ah, right, you mean the philosophical consideration of what is exchange or payment. The pound sterling is just an accounting unit, apparently dating from the 8th or 9th century Anglo Saxon ages being equivalent to 240 silver pennies, so in essence originating as an amount of precious metal. If we use tokens for exchange of "value" it has to be a widely accepted stable item so that everyone can rate their produce against it. Of course now we don't even hold the tokens, they are just a figment of an accountants imagination, not even a number on paper, just a binary code in a memory somewhere.
So it's five pounds "worth" of value, however that is currently defined, not five pounds "of" anything.
