don't get too excited but they may be opium poppies (papaver somniferum). They have a long, dull green leaf. If it is that genus they are legal to grow but illegal to process (duh).
Mine just appeared in the front garden and I thought (initially) they were a weird cabbage until they kept on growing upwards. I am unsure why I suspected a cabbage since I hadn't planted any vegetables but growing things is like witchcraft anyway (to me). I suppose this implies that as a witch or wizard I'd be most like Rincewind (for Discworld fans).

they don't look like opium poppy leaves, they look too "green", too shiny and too fat.

you have another mutant. :) albeit a pretty one.
Once they've flowered the remaining pod will have thousands of seeds which, in theory, you can sow next year. (I'm still waiting). I may have Paraquat fingers.
Many years ago I heard some gardening lore but I've been unable to recall the exact expression and cannot find a reference to it... but it basically said if you let a poppy plant go to seed it it will take 7 years of digging to rid yourself of it.
edit: finally found the saying only it's for weeds/prolific plants generally not just poppies. "One years seeding makes seven years' weeding."

A couple of SotDs, both about similar things.
First the indescribable pleasure of standing quietly for 10 or 15 minutes and watching the bees working away on my front garden. I brought it back to where it should be this year by hoiking out the bloomin' pampas grass that had self set and was going for world domination, and then pruning the perennials (roses, hydrangeas, cotoneastor) and finally by densely sowing wildflower seeds in the empty spaces. It's now a fabulous looking area of flowers and the bees are loving it (and so am I!).
Secondly, walking 500yds up the lane. The second half of the walk is what makes me smile. I'll explain.
When I first moved to this village around 23 years ago the top half of the lane had verges with quite a lot of wild flowers in them, but over the years the bracken got in and starved the native wild flowers of the light they needed to thrive.
About eight years ago I started a little experiment and began pulling all the bracken out of a short stretch of one verge to see what would happen. The result the following spring was impressive so ever since then I have pulled all the bracken out of the whole length of the verge. Initially it was a lot of work but now, although the bracken does still show up, there is very little of it, and as soon as I see it, it comes out.
The results are spectacular and encouraged me three years ago to start doing the same thing to the opposite verge, which has responded similarly. This spring these two verges have been truly quite stunning to see. I've never seen them look so good and it really has made the effort so worth it. Huge smile.
Any pictures Gary? even if you don't have a before and after, just an after will do...… :)

The really intense spring flowering bit on the lane is pretty much over now I'm afraid Chris. I never took any pictures when I started doing it as I wasn't really anticipating it becoming such a personal obsession, or the spectacular results.
Here's a before and after of the front garden though
Here's how it looked after clearing and pruning in early April.

Sv failed the MOT on a couple of things, including no tail lamp. Aparently this is a new requirement, as the light from the rear light doesn't count any more.
As mine has an aftermarket LED fitted, I had just about enough of problems & was going to refit the snowplough and standard lights & indicators.
I'd started taking out the rear fairing screws & fixings, when I noticed a bare wire. Turns out the bullet connector had come off the spindly LED light wire. One new bullet connector later & its now working again, saved a bit of time & I can take it back tomorrow.
First thing that's gone right for a while
Found my internet speeds on this Dell laptop were woefully slow. Checked various things as recommended by the service provider, found my old laptop was reasonably quick (60/10 down/up on a 150 service), the Dell was 10/10.
Searching the problem soon came up with issues relating to "Smartbyte" installed on Dell PCs.
Uninstalled it and back to 90/10, which is about what I'd expect. Just have to make sure it doesn't re-install (which some folk report it does depending on settings).

Glad to be alive.
Rode the motorcycle to see my grandson yesterday at a hospital about 100 miles away .
Got hit by a car at traveling at 65 mph or better.
I was between two cars riding at the speed limit (65) when my assailant passed the car behind me and assumed there was an empty space in between and dived in.
Hit my left foot and sheared off the left foot peg and sent the bike sailing towards the side of the road but I somehow managed to keep it in the road even with it going into a 'death wobble' when it straightened up.
The foot is very sore and very swollen but not broken and the bike is still rideable so lots to be thankful for.
Never heard of a bike taking that kind of impact at that speed and not crashing.
Deffinately a miracle that I'm alive and not terribly injured or worse.....maybe two or three.
It just wasn't my time to go.
Suffering with the foot today but glad to be alive and still have the sv!

No the car that hit me did not stop.
By the time I got the bike back under control he was long gone.
My only glimpse of the car was seeing a small corner of the front end 1/10 th of a second before the impact.
It was a dark navy blue colour. That's all I know.
Didn't call police. I thought my foot was broken and was less than 20 miles from the hospital so continued on.
Having a heat wave so saw no use in standing around in 36 degree heat for an hour or two with a hurting foot to report someone who will never be caught.
There were some other drivers that stopped but no one got the plate number.

As posted in Gripe of the Day, my gear shifter was badly bent after I dropped the bike on my drive. My mechanic friend picked it up for me yesterday and today managed to straighten it for me. No charge. Luckily it is an aftermarket shifter rather than an OEM item so it bent rather than broke, which happened to the original OEM one.

The faired one with the Sheene 7 looks great - but it would not sound right without a howling 2-stroke soundtrack... And I agree, the Fabergé/Brut colour scheme would be better

Mmm! I like all of them but particularly the cafe racers.

Running out of electricity on the bike at weekend, a passing chap came back with jump leads. When this didn't work, helped me push it up the hill for half a mile (in the Dales) to get it on charge at his in-laws. Then took me to the campsite I was heading to down the road.
Didn't want anything in return (so I left some beers when I went to get my bike). Saved my weekend and it fired up fine and made it all the way home on Sunday (so still some figuring to do as seems to only be an issue when hot).

Nice story :)
Have you checked the voltage across the battery on a 20v DC setting on a Meter with the engine idling?
Anything above 14.5v and north of 15V and the Regulator part of the R./R may be on the way out :(

Not yet, I couldn't be hassled yesterday. I'm picking up a couple of jerry cans of fuel tonight (fuel light came on, on the way home) then I can start the fun and games.
I was going to check the stator resistance (sure it was OK when I changed the ign pick-up a few weeks back) then the voltage across the battery (I know it dropped to 5v when cranking on the last battery) then if there is nothing jumping out, let it get hot and start again (I'll get the spare battery ready to swap out in case).
I'll clean all contacts and add some ACF50 whilst I'm at it.

SteI wonder if the insulation on the stator is starting to fail. As it heats up and expands it starts to short across its coils?

A couple of days ago my desktop pc asked if it could update to windows v1903. It failed miserably with a bsod....but I did eventually manage to boot it to its original build.
Of course this cheesed me off no end. I foresaw lots of time wasted trying to work out the cause and applying a fix before trying again.
Last night it asked again and I said no. I wanted to backup parts of the registry etc before I committed myself to more misery.
This morning I thought I'd do the previously mentioned backups and guess what..... Yep its gone and updated itself only successfully this time.
So SOTD because I no longer have to go through the agony of sorting this issue out. Also GOTD because given the choice I'd have updated when convenient to me.

John, as soon as the feature updates are released I download them and put them on a pen drive as a bootable iso. I actually download the file which covers all the different flavours of windows (64bit/32bit etc). I can install them at my leisure then and also do the updates on the PCs of my clients with poor internet speeds.

I might well do that nextime, trouble is how do you stop the automatic updates? I know you can switch on 'metered connection' but I've found that a bit hit and miss.

From 1903 onwards, it just notifies you that the update is ready to get. You have the option of pausing updates from Updates and Security in Settings. You can pause them for up to 35 days.

Tell me that I have an update ready, nag me even to do it but let me decide when to apply it.

It's that time of year again. I got my bike insurance renewal this week from Hastings and it is £25 more expensive than last year. I called and there was no budge from them on price.
Went to Gocompare and found Carole Nash was £50 cheaper, The only difference was the compulsory excess, £250 rather than £150.
Why do I have to go through this every year?

I was in the pub near work at lunchtime and saw a small sign on the wall. Apparently in future KTM bikes will be sold with a free dog.
That way the owners won't have to walk home on their own.

My renewal last week was about £650 up from £550 last year with Bennetts. I got the same deal (fully comp, breakdown, helmets and leathers, euro cover) with Bemoto for only £350. I think they hope you are too lazy to look around and will just accept the auto-renewal.

Exactly that. It never pays to keep the same insurance any more. I alternate between Bennett's and Carole Nash every other year to keep quotes cheaper.
