View Full Version : Smile of the day - What is yours?
if Scotland gained its own legal tender then the BOE owes the new holding bank in Scotland the deposits they hold for the three note issuing banks in Scotland. the problem is, i very much doubt that the BOE has the reserves to do so. why do you think the Gov bailed out RBS.
I think you’re confusing legal tender with currency. It’s not the same thing. Legal tender is a pretty archaic notion designed to make people happy with taking worthless coins for real stuff with the knowledge they’ll be able to spend it afterwards. Notes aren’t legal tender in Scotland. Prior to the union we didn’t use notes.
Only about 4% of the money in the economy exists as cash. More than 96% of it isn’t legal tender. In fact, it doesn’t exist at all in any durable form. It has value for no reason other than we all agree to the delusion. :D
The Scottish cash in circulation is nothing to the BOE. The bank bailout made available an amount of money that was considerably larger than the entire Scottish economy. They have the muscle.
Sterling is a Scottish thing as far as i know.
Stirling is a Scottish thing. ;) Sterling is the UK’s currency
Not a single note or coin has come into or out of my business for the last 2 years. No legal tender is required.
i blame Gordon "drunken" Brown for taken the BOE out of the gold standard. you can blame that man for the state of the country. lets just take us out of the gold standard and sell all the reserves then drop interest rates to almost zero so we can borrow more money from the BOE but keep the same payments.. that should help.
so what is the "worth" of a BOE note, how can i redeem it and what do i get?
Apologies again for the derail, so here’s another smile of the day.
Tomorrow I’m getting air conditioning installed in my garage.
I don’t have air conditioning in my house. Got to get your priorities straight. :)

Aye he sold it cheap. He’s remembered as a better chancellor than a PM but I reckon it might be the other way round (and I don’t think he was a good PM).
As far as the worth of money is concerned, that’s the magic. You can’t redeem it for anything. It doesn’t exist in any material sense.
Once you’ve created imaginary money and let people lend it for nothing other than interest, the money starts to grow on its own and the economy gets bigger. All from nothing!
Don’t stare at it too long. Don’t ask questions. It won’t survive the scrutiny :)

Yes, fractional reserve fiat currency is one of the biggest confidence tricks ever, probably more probability-maths involved than quantum physics!
Perhaps it would have been better to call it 'Schrodinger's cash' - is the backup there or isn't it, don't look, that spoils it!

Go to a Poundland or Poundstretcher shop (whatever they are called ) they have lots of things for a pound so you could get 10 items for a ten pound note !!!!

Can't you redeem it for material goods ?!
Can't you redeem it for material goods ?!
yes but you cant redeem it for gold/silver from BOE any more which used to be the case before brown stained pants got his way. there is now no "material" worth and its value is linked to (i believe) the GDP for world trade. its all a gentlemen's handshake that they dont ask for material value. even the USA does not deal with gold as a backing for their currency. IIR the gold in fort knox belongs to china but i could be wrong.
brown stained pants needed money to keep the public happy. he gave control of the BOE back to the directors with a deal that they lower the interest rate. he borrowed more money but with lower interest rates kept the payments the same. the trouble is the rest of the world had to do the same or people would borrow from the UK and not them.. brown stained pants wrecked the financial world overnight.

Hmmmm ... I disagree. You can just as easily trace the roots of the 2008 crisis back to the 'big bang' deregulation of the City under Thatcher.
I'd agree that Brown was too easily taken in by the ongoing assurances of the City that only light-touch regulation was needed and that 'the financial market will police itself' (as every other PM since Thatcher has been), but he did not cause the problems, they were already there.

yes in England.....
one thing to note about Scottish bank notes is that they are guaranteed exchange for new notes/coinage no matter how old (to a degree). when the BOE withdraw notes you have a given time to exchange them after which they are worthless. yes yes Scottish notes are worthless anyway.

I always thought it odd that initially, after the solstice, the increase in daylight is only in the evenings, ie sunset gets later but sunrise doesn't get earlier.
I know it's connected to the Earth's elliptical orbit but it still seems odd.

Merry Christmas to all.
This belongs in this and the gripe of the day thread.
My son passed his driving test on Monday. You may recall I’ve mentioned him in the other thread, regarding his exploites with his Chinese piece of crap 125.
We also bought him a little Mazda 2 last year, for when he eventually passed his test. Nice little car, top of the range sport model (2010 model bought cheap from my next door neighbour)
Got a phone call last night at 11:30pm. He had smacked a curb and buggered his wheel. Went to go have a look/pick him up, and the nsf wheel had much positive camber and was against the rear of the wheel arch.
He was wrong in his diagnosis of a buggered wheel. That was scuffed but ok, and the tyre was fine too. It was however undrivable.
I have a good relationship with my regular garage, as I was lumbered with managing my sons footie team that he sponsored and his son played in the team. A phone call at 8am this morning and we arranged for the car to be picked up by him and taken to his garage. Front wishbone and drop link stuffed.
All ripe for the gripe thread. The smile came when not 4 hrs later he rang and said does your lad want his car back for Christmas or let him chill out and pick it up on Wednesday. I told him not to bust a bo!!ock trying to get it done and he replied with it’s done you can come and get it.
Cracking service. Hopefully the boy has learnt his lesson (or will when he pays his bill!)
Merry chriatmas

yes, we know it finished on tv in 1997. This is SOTD and it seemed funny (to me at least) that with all the issues the country has at the moment, that an MP standing up and asking for the National Anthem, is hilarious.
It's like standing on the deck of the Titanic after hiting the iceberg and asking the band* if they play requests. Maybe there are more important issues?

Exactly. My kids (who were born in the US and thus are American) had to chant the Pledge of Allegiance at school every morning.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance
It's part of the US culture so I accepted it since I was a guest in their country but it reminded me of North Korea. The US have their flags flying everywhere, we have never needed it.
I am therefore suspicious when MPs start draping themselves in the flag because it leads us to the "if you're not with us, you're against us" thinking which was prevalent (in the US at least) to justify the various ME wars.
Our country has a lot of issues, the lack of the National Anthem on tv is not one. It's another diversion, maybe from the #10 flat redecoration which still rumbles on and has now gained another facet?
Fix the corruption and the unethical behaviour of your party and then we can chat about the BBC playing the National Anthem, Mr. Rosindell MP.

Its kinda in the Speyside style, so pretty easy going. They have opened a new distillery in Llandudno, so it will be interesting to see the variation in the spirit when that is released to market.

Luckily for me there's been a massive shortage in licenced operatives so while I could walk into a new job this afternoon, companies have had to bend over backwards to keep good staff on. Could be seen as a risky hand to play but it paid off this time
Part of the issue is when pubs etc closed and door supervisors/security guards were surplus to requirement, a lot of them changed industry entirely opting for IMO harder work in big retail warehouses/Amazon etc for slightly better £.. The new training and refreshers damaged the industry too, however I feel that it's a good thing as there are far too many idiots in this job!
Reality meets fiction with the "Vimes Boot Index". :)
For non-Discworld people - Terry Pratchett wrote about Captain Sam Vines, head of the police in Ankh-Morpork. Vimes said rich people were rich because they spent less money and reasoned it thus: a rich person would buy a $50 pair of boots that would last for many years, a poor person (like Vimes, initially) would buy $10 boots which started leaking after 2 years and would need to be replaced. So the rich person spends less money.
Why the VBI? Inflation figures of 5.4% don't paint an accurate picture if you're living on a tight budget. Jack Monroe (who started this campaign) points out that the cheapest pasta has risen 141% in a year, rice has risen 344%, baked beans 45% etc. His twitter feed lists more examples:
https://tinyurl.com/2ej63rac
Anyway the ONS has agreed and is going to revise the way inflation is calculated based on food/income levels.
i dont know where Jack shops but jezzz she talks a lot of borlox. media panicking the public yet again. yes the price of a shop has increased but not by the amounts that is stated in that bloggg... what has increased in the past two years and more so recently is fuel.

Prices of bits and bikes we stock have gone up hugely. £350 basic bike is now £450. Parts at around £8 are now £12+. I'm quite suprised at some of the new RRPs from the distributors when I get out the pricing gun after deliveries.
I'm seeing more examples of food items / packages getting smaller rather than price going up. They used to be careful about it and do it subtly. Now it seems to be really blatant and noticeable. Bags of things that would feed our family of four now look pitiful when served up.
The most ridiculous is energy bills. They were already too high. Now absurd.
(Doesn't feel like this should be in the SOTD thread :-( )

Exactly, Brexit and Covid.
This started off as a gripe but has become a tentative smile. I'm not very good at DIY (hopeless, if you're being unkind). I can measure something multiple times and the more I measure the more it guarantees it will be wrong when I cut. Since I'm aware of this failing I tried unsuccessfully to get someone to install a sliding door at the top of my stairs. I can do this I thought (erroneously).
(I should add that one carpenter told me he was leaving town for good when I approached him with the job).
Anyway, the door is up, the track is level, the door hangs vertically so far, so good. Can you see the "but" coming?
Sigh, but when the door meets the wall it's not square and the when the door is open the gap at the bottom is different side to side. The (brick) wall is not plumb and the floor slopes slightly which brings us to the next issue - the door binds on the floor slightly on one side. Since I made the support for the track where it meets the brick wall somewhat "robust" I can't take it down and pack it to bring it back to plumb. Bother. I'll hide it with draught proofing battens - another bodge added to my lifetime of DIY attempts. :(
Since there's no more adjustment left on the door hangers I need to trim the door to stop it binding. I don't have a saw bench, nor a circular saw but I do have a jigsaw but, from experience, cutting a straight line with a jigsaw even with a fence is tough. Still, needs must.
This is where it transitions from Gripe to Smile (hopefully), whilst browsing in the shed for the G clamps (bearing in mind this was my Dad's shed and has never been fully explored) I found an electric planer! I have used one before (a long while ago) and I think this will be a better option than the jigsaw. What could possibly go wrong? (see you over in the Gripe of the Day later).

DIY door......
I love a cliff hanger episode (or in this case, a door hanger)!
Public Service Announcement
Do not use an electric planer in your bedroom (without a debris catcher attachment) unless you like the rustic stable effect. :)
Yes, the planer worked well (yay), the mess is incredible (boo). The door hangs vertically and slides ok but it didn't affect the plumb of the wall, obviously. I should have thought ahead and checked it - like the man writing a warning message for quicksand: "Warning: Quicksand Ahea"
Anyway, I had always intended the door to slide between 2 battens when closed for draught prevention (honest) so the wonky wall won't be noticeable. I'll pick the wood up from B&Q tomorrow, hopefully it won't be as warped as that was delivered by Wickes.
Another obvious point (to me now) is that my plan to put a handle on the door is not going to work (if I want to fully open the door). Fortunately my thoughts are ahead of my wallet this time.
I contacted 4 carpenters/joiners to do this - 1 was leaving the area permanently, 2 never returned my calls and the 4th said he'd come and look and never showed up.

The lovely Lady Poppy has bought me a (full size) bottle of Penderyn Peated. She is an absolute angel.
A nice 150 miles out on the Bike today.
Was certainly a bit wet & muddy, and will get a deep clean tomorrow.

In my weekend paper there was a summary of the changes to the highway code, one of which concerned zebra crossings and stated vehicles should stop for pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a zebra crossing !
Wasn't that always the case, that is what zebra crossings are for ?!!!

Zebra crossings are for cyclists to ride across, using pedestrians as a slalom course....
In the new rules cyclists also expected to give way to pedestrians ha ha ha ha

But wasn't that always the case anyway, all vehicles including cyclists to stop for pedestrians to use a zebra crossing ?

Yeah but it was optional for cyclists before LOL, also cyclists now need to give way to pedestrians waiting to cross or already crossing at junctions - which will be a novelty for them. Not sure how much legal force behind the new rules, if the highway code says you 'should' or 'you should not' it is just advisory ( good practice ), if the highway code says 'your must' or 'you must not' it is generally more enforceable by law.

No - previously you had to stop for anyone already using the crossing, although most people would also stop for people waiting to stop out of courtesy.

The difference is that MUST may be enforced by the police proactively, but SHOULD will be enforced in arrears if you ever have an accident.

As far as I'm aware the underlying legislation hasn't been changed. This code change is just an attempt to clarify what was already supposed to be happening or to update expected interpretation.
Whether laws are sufficiently complied with or enforced (either consistently or to any sensible extent) is a different debate.

Yes, big media misinformation on the changes to the Highway Code, most have been in the HC for a long time, and as you say have been updated.
Rather than read FB posts & media misinformation, then look at Cycling UK's explanation of the changes

That's your first problem, reading a journalists interpretation of the Highway Code changes

Who ever didn't stop for somebody waiting to use a zebra crossing ?!
(apart from the motorist who rammed the car in front ,which was waiting for my sister using the zebra crossing and was then shunted forward to knock her down!)

Almost everyone would stop, which is why this is one of the less controversial changes, but that's what the change is - it previously said you should stop if people were already crossing, but it now says you also stop for people waiting.
It's stopping for pedestrians crossing at junctions (a different change) which is causing arguments.
