Better half got a letter today from her car insurers, it read
"Following the recent activity on your policy, your future schedule of payments is detailed below.
The installment due on 20 February 2015 for the sum of £**** will be collected on 20 February 2015"
Well that's got us scratching our heads.

Smile for last night was meeting Tiger55 and Mrs Tiger55. Completely unplanned and very nice it was :)

It was my lads 11th birthday at the weekend. We bought him a telescope cos he's been fascinated by the stars for ages. Unfortunately, it's been cloudy until tonight and he's been getting upset at not being able to use his new toy.
He's a happy lad now though, we're just in from looking at the colours on Jupiter! it's crystal clear and so much detail, I'm astonished considering what we paid.
It's an amazing bit of kit, and I'll be able to connect my camera to it when I've bought the relevant part.

Please go and buy the relevant parts now - I'm very keen to see what a home telescope can do. :-)
Btw, does it have any kind of auto setup or do you need to know where to point it?

It's on order. Should be here any day. The scope is a starchaser 102 on an equatorial mount. Is cost £200 but seeing as I'll be using it too, it's not all for the lad.

It doesn't have a goto mount, although I could buy one. I thought learning the stars and how to find them would be better than just tapping some digits into a computer.

Riding an SV for the first time in two months since my accident, so much more fun than the Bandit although a little uncomfortable until I get used to the position again. Also the pleasant surprise of finding that the previous owner had wired the heated grips on my new SV into an ignition live so I didn't have to install Bibio's Gizmo in the cold and rain today.
My bargain jalopy got through it's mot unscathed, which is a most pleasant surprise. Couple more weeks til payday and then the SV goes in, then I'm gonna thrash the conkers off it:p

Due to my accident my insurance cost has tripled, I've tried calling around and searching online, but most companies won't even touch me now, and the ones that will are offering me a premium at least three times dearer than what I paid last year. Had a good chat with my current insurers renewals department and they've agreed with the underwriter to give me a policy for pretty much what I paid last year despite initially quoting me three times as much, they've decided that although my accident category makes me a high risk, the circumstances do not make me a higher risk - a victory for common sense! One less thing to worry about now :)
Well done
Ride safe geza.
The old insurance companies will squeeze your pips dry given half a chance, had my quote for the car by post, rang them up to ask why such a large increase from last year (haven't made a claim or anything),asked me to wait a moment then came back with a new price £80 less, you've got to be on your toes with these modern day **** Turpins, and yes I did it on line last year and still got a paper reminder!!!
Better put Richard Turpin then!!!

Most insurance companies definitely aren't working for our benefit, however I did at least get my renewal by email (although I expect one to come in the post soon too) and I got my documents via email while I was still on the phone to them, nice and easy as I always know where my documents will be.

17-02-15, 01:46 PM
I had a phone call from my insurance company last year to quote me on the renewal.
After the quote I said can you phone me next week after I've checked online and suddenly the price dropped nearly £200. Could probably get cheaper than they quoted but I have a low tolerance for answering the same questions over and over again trying to get a better deal.

Dragged the SV out of the shed to see what the state of play is, and I'm pretty chuffed to be honest. Just need a chain for the MOT, and she'll be back on the road after a decade languishing in a damp shed. Looks pretty fit for £200-worth, I reckon...

That was funny, though all credit to her for getting up and carrying on. I bet she didn't have to spend 7 hours sitting in A&E.
I must be getting old as I only switched on the last 40 minutes and thought it all rather dull. Everyone gets on, no one staggers on stage drunk and ranting like the Britpop days. What's more, I have only bought one album by a Brit nominated artist last year and he's older than George Ezra and Ed Sheeran's combined age.

Anyway, my smile of the day is getting my tickets to BST, which is a bit crazy because I'm starting the day in Nottingham at Trent Bridge as I'd already paid £150 for tickets to the Ashes, now I've just paid another £170 for Blur and I'm going to have to leave the cricket at tea and drive to London. Two from me today.
The feeling of encouragement my almost 18 year old got yesterday from looking round Sussex Uni - she has something to work towards now. It is, according to the Monkey, much nicer than Worcester which is the only real comparison she has.
The other was ME going back to Sussex Uni. In 1987 I was in my first year at Brighton Poly and the main halls of residence are just across the road from Sussex U and we'd head over to their Union bars every Friday night as they were a lot cheaper than ours. The one I remember best is still there. It was good to see The East Slope Bar again, especilly as this very old part of the campus is due for redevelopment soon.

We did OK with Admiral. Both our kids had cars whilst they were still on L plates and we put them on one of their multi-car policies. When they then passed their tests they obviously then had to tell Admiral and their respective premiums only went up by £100 or so. As you say a years premium for them is about the value of a small car but at least it means they start building a NCD from day one.

Yeah, we live in the sticks so getting them both independently mobile was a real priority. It's an expensive pain at the time, but well worth the agro in the long run.

We gave my daughter my wife's 1.9 Fabia diesel when she was 17 and insured it in her name so she started a NCD straight away. We got her a couple of lessons early on with a school just so she had an idea of what they were after and then she did 90% of her "learning" in the Fabia driving us around. We gave her back to the school for a few more lessons before her test and she passed first time, in their car. My wife then had to buy a new car as she'd lost the old one!
We tried similar with my son however he was a bit keener (like he bought a car a month before his 17th birthday and I had to take him for his first drive at one minute past midnight....). He passed the theory part of the test on his birthday and tried to get a cancellation practical for the next day, but fortunately we talked him out of that and he had to wait a month! The irony was it actually took him four attempts to pass his practical, (you can just imagine the stick his sister gave him....) as he just got so nervous in the school car and made silly mistakes. In the end he did it in his own car and went straight through with only a single "minor".
