Had a hospital visit today, occurs to me after leaving work I have no wallet and no money for parking, decide to drive in anyway and just plead with an attendant/desert my car forever if needs be - gates are open, rock up to the ticket machine 'Parking is free this afternoon!'.

scoring a mega cheap brand spanking new never opened box of a Scorpion Carbine SS can. ok so it was for a Bandit 650 but i already have a link pipe for the SV.. mega chuffed :-)

anybody want a link pipe for a (box says) GSF 600 Bandit / 650 Bandit 00>06 EDGE?

Heh, that's how I got my Yoshi TRS can for my Gen 3 - it was from a guy who'd bought it for his 1250 Bandit, did a couple of hundred miles then crashed on the left hand side, writing the bike off. He just wanted rid of all the bits he could sell.

Got a link pipe end-formed to fit the Gen 3, sorted. Virtually brand-new Yoshi for less than half-price all in.

By Wednesday I would have worked 13 -11hr days in a row including weekends due to a work colleague leaving without prior notice! And another colleague going on holiday.
So ... still holding the Fort until 18:00 Wednesday. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so conscientious.

You can break your back at work helping out, as long as you remember 'you are only as good as your last f+++ up'. Some managers like an easy life, and will take everything people give, but when it comes to defending employees against criticism from above some managers look to their own careers and hang them out to dry.

end of an era. i have had a VOIP phone (vonage) for over 15 years and its been great with great customer service. sadly i have cancelled the contract. good news is that the money pays for my mobile + £4 a month in my pocket.

Sad wee smile for me; I built a retaining wall in my garden - not massive about 10ftx7ft on a stepped foundation. I had a proper brickie round today and he noticed it and complimented it. Suggested me helping out on the job he's quoting for and knock any days saved off his rate which is just what I needed.

...hang on, maybe he's banking on days gained correcting my shoddy laying :smt017

Unlike some foreign postcodes that cover thousands of houses, the genius UK postcode system ensures that every postcode only covers an average of 15 properties. It is accurate enough to use in a satnav without a house number. Even with just your surname and postcode, or just the postcode alone you should have got it.

Most people still get their broadband from fibre to exchange providers, we had Virgin fibre to premises years ago ( about 2014 in our area ) but it was flaky and unreliable and expensive, we changed to PlusNet ( BT ) fibre to exchange after a few years and we get 60meg and it is 100% reliable, so we got a landline phone with anytime calls to mobile and landlines for very little extra cost.. it is still a lot cheaper than Virgin fibre and not much slower.

I have home and work voip lines from Sipgate that cost me nothing as I use them for incoming only. I also have a 3 line trunk that is £5/month. These days all 5 lines connect to a Pi running Raspbx. So IVR on home line so caller can direct to household members.

As well as sipphones in house/office, we all have softphones on mobiles. Meaning wherever we are, we get the calls to the house. With my wifes health issues it is important doctors/hospital can get to us irrespective of where we are.

I get a solid 650Mb from Virgin. But the aluminium BT line to the house will only give me 1Mb, So until FTTP oneday becomes a reality I guess it will have to always be Viirgin and sod the costs, (I also have a backup 4G router should Virgin ever go down, used one in the past 4 years, so will scrap that soon to save £25/month for the unlimited data sim)

Because everyone pays for at least one mobile phone per household, paying for a second device that is rarely used is a bit of a luxury - given the choice through necessity most would opt for the mobile over the landline. At the moment the cost of a home phone is quite cheap because you require copper line rental for broadband (the other necessity) which is still infrastructure operating in the way it evolved - phonelines came first so we run broadband over those. I'd guess at somepoint, to further internet connections at home we'll deliver lines in a way that don't natively support telephony (fibre?) and BT will think what's the point of still running analogue telephone infrastructure*.

*someone more clued up is going to tell me that's already happened and it's all voip at their central infrastructure and they 're-analogue' it back out to your rotary telephone

I think it is happening. A friend of mine has been told by BT that his line is going digital. I can't recall all the details but basically it's making all his phones redundant although he can buy adapters if he wants to carry on using them. I'm guessing that his new line will only support VOIP via his (new) BB hub.

Ah, but how much do you pay to get unlimited 'free' calls on your mobile ?!£7 a month for unlimited free calls and texts, 4Gb data. It's not a case of either having one technology or the other, we need both, a landline to get BB, and mobiles for the usual reasons. The day might come where I ditch the landline and rely purely on mobile as speeds get higher and more reliable.

Yesterday I was left in the house myself all day.

There was nothing on my domestic to-do list and I hadn’t been left with any new requests. I had a day off work and nobody was expecting anything from me.

I reckon that must be the first time that’s happened in a good 3 or 4 years.

So anyhoo, after I had a w***, I thought “I’m goin oot on the feckin bike”.

It actually started! So I put air in the tyres, squeezed into the shrunk leathers and went for a four hour bimble around Leadhills, Abington, Dalveen Pass.

Loved it. Aren’t motorcycles great?

TamSV

I’d kinda convinced myself I didn’t like it after I got it but I’ve now revised my opinion.

Nice engine and gearbox. Less character than a twin, not as dull as an in-line 4. Don’t need to change gear as often as with the SV. You can do almost everything in 4th and 5th.

Handling is pretty good - a bit better than stock SV (although I haven’t ridden a new SV so hopefully they’ve improved too and I never thought the
originals were terrible). Like a lot of bikes, apart from the real top end stuff, I think it would benefit from an upgraded rear shock but I’m ok with the front end. The rear isn’t bad as such but could be better - it can skip a wee bit.

Or I could just lose 2 stone.

Seat was comfy enough for a few hours, but then I always found both the curvy and pointy seats OK.

Absolutely NO onboard storage. You could keep your credit card under the seat and that’s about it so the wee Motech tank bag I got has turned out to be pretty useful.

For my sins (well, complete laziness) I'm with Bennetts for my bike insurance at the moment. Just notified them of a non-fault car accident and change of address and there was no fee or price hike, same on my renewal next week. I thought they'd be getting the nipple clamps out.

Cynical NB: they probably know it makes no difference as they have no intention of paying out, ever.

These things can depend on how a machine is set up I suppose, but I had a test ride on an MT09 a while ago and I didn't feel at all comfortable riding it because of the throttle/fuelling, which was erratic and abrupt I thought, sort of all go or stop sort of thing, if that makes sense. He told me specifically that it was because I called him untrustworthy. He would respond if I needed help but would no longer comment on my emails.

Obviously my suggestion was facetious but I think that tomorrow's mask guideline is unworkable. However, there have been instances where a vote was due in Parliament and I've voiced my opinion - as a constituency MP it's his job to listen, irrespective of how he feels. Telling him he was too old to represent young people at 71 years old probably didn't help my case, though.

He was on the committee that's introducing E10 ethanol I discovered after sending him many links as to why it was not a great idea.
I wrote to him about the GKN takeover asking him to voice his opposition. He agreed with me then voted with the party; hence untrustworthy.
More recently I've been haranguing him about the lack of ethics (and the amount of sleaze) in the current cabinet. Maybe my emails go straight into his junk/spam folder but I'll keep writing.

I got to see Flying Ant Day for a change. Sat under the parasol on the patio this morning, coffee beside me cooling down to the right temperature, reading a magazine, when I noticed an odd haze. Looked up to see a mass of flying insects, all heading skywards, slightly diagonally on the very light breeze. The lawn was a shimmering carpet of fussing ants escorting the winged emergents, who looked about for a moment, checked for wind direction and just launched straight up. Absolutely mesmerising, from a dozen or so points in the lawn. 30 minutes later it was all over - the odd straggler wandering around or possibly a newcomer from a different colony a few doors away. Such an amazing sight.

Sorry Seeker - might not your cup of tea per your comments on the other thread, but it was fascinating for me.

More recently I've been haranguing him about the lack of ethics (and the amount of sleaze) in the current cabinet. Maybe my emails go straight into his junk/spam folder but I'll keep writing.

You probably aren't aware of all the internal politics that the Public do not see.
A party needs to have members seeing eye to eye/compromising on votes to work for the overall. We can't always have everything our way as Society is made up of a lot of people and circumstances - some of which work for us, some don't.
The MP's & the PM are all puppets. If you want change speak to the puppet masters - the people with the money that Bank roll them.

Was it Flying Ant day today for the rest of you?

Not seen them yet. They usually assemble on our back door step then climb up the wall to the adjacent window cill before launching themselves into the sky in squadrons. It is a fascinating sight.

I suggested to my MP that since the covid mask requirement will now become a suggestion, but we will be expected to carry on wearing them, that we try the same with speed limits. Remove the legal requirement to obey them but suggest we continue to observe them - let's see what happens. :D
Obviously my suggestion was facetious ...
Actually, I understand that's exactly the situation in Germany for certain Autobahn sections - the 'unlimited' sections are not "no speed limit" but have an "advisory limit". Have a crash and they'll still take the speed you were travelling into consideration in comparison to the advisory limit to see if you deserve some of the fault laid against you. You're 'expected' to drive apppropriately, there's no impunity if bad stuff happens.

So not so facetious after all. I like your thinking. Reading your post has raised a smile for me today:)

And credit to you for trying to engage with your MP :salut: They can make representations in the House of Commons or privately to Ministers or Civil Service on behalf of their constituents but we do need to let them know if we think Government policy is inappropriate, implementation is wrong or law needs changing. That's our democratic system as I understand it!

He stopped responding over a year ago when I called Conservatives untrustworthy and unethical. I suspect he didn't like this level of "engagement".

Undaunted, I sent him this picture this morning since Hancock's emails will not be investigated despite it likely government business was discussed and he's already been accused of PPE purchase abuses :)

If there's one thing that irritates me the most is when I live my life by society's rules but the people who set these rules ignore them and then are annoyed when caught, refusing to even apologise. Hypocrisy.

I hammer Vickers (my MP) constantly about ethics and sent him another email about Dawn Butler MP who was ejected from the Commons yesterday because she accused Boris of lying. What she said was truthful and I sent numerous, validated examples of his lies. The problem here isn't Butler's breaking of Common's etiquette it's that our Prime Minister is a proven liar.

Johnson’s tendency towards dishonesty is much chronicled, with a series of people who have known him commenting on what Max Hastings, his editor at the Daily Telegraph, called “his moral bankruptcy, rooted in a contempt for truth”.

Sorry for rant, I get quite irritated at times.

I do too, normally when I'm at work, or stuck in the car going to work or coming home.
Basically anything to do with work. I really must get my **** together and get a new job.

Thinking of retraining as a plumber or sparky. Just need to figure out how.

Anyhow, back to smile of the day.

It is Friday after all.

They had to change the law many years ago, too many MPs in jail and H of C empty... lying is not confined to one party or MP, people only seem to object to MPs lying if they already hate them....

Two items of news that solve their own problem:

1) Lincolnshire council have been turning off street lights at midnight to save money.
2) Theddlethorpe (Lincolnshire coast, near Mablethorpe) proposed as site for nuclear waste.

So, build street light posts out of nuclear waste - they'll glow in the dark and you won't need electricity. :)

That's my "thinking outside the box" done for today, problem solving is tiring.

i read something a little while ago, where someone said that whenever they get a spam text they signed them up to random things for text alerts.

I got one today, so decided to do the same. They'll now get up to date information on the global financial markets, stock exchange (all movements on major companies & currencies) and John Lewis updates on everything.

What happened to something like a 5 year apprenticeship under the supervision of a qualified tradesman and technical qualifications obtained by a day release course at technical college ,or is there some sort of 'crash course' you can do nowadays ?! I don't know, but I would be interested to know for my son's sake. You used to have to be employed by a company to start with in order to train in things like plumbing or electrical work. Good luck anyway, keep us informed.

We have one guy at work who has been an electrician's mate for years. Lots of experience in different areas who is now doing an adult apprenticeship. 1 day a week at college and not terrible wages.

And we have another guy who has no experience, is about the same age of ~30 and who only started with the company to do an apprenticeship. He is doing a normal 4 year apprenticeship and is earning under £6 an hour. He specifically agreed to this before starting and wouldn't have got the job otherwise. (we were looking for normal apprentices at the time)

Most people couldn't afford to be on apprentice wages at that age.

No, I've had a look and it appears becoming a spark's pretty impossible unless you live in a tent and get free Dominos to live off like Darren. It's like the magic circle. The electrician's mate/magicians assistant route looks the best chance but they look few & far between.

Water lego it is.

The electrician I use was a science teacher and he must have learned the trade somehow in later life. I can't think he would have served as an apprentice for several years before setting up on his own.

Got drenched yesterday as the rain started as I was on a ride out. The 'waterproof ' gear performed as expected and I had to change out of wet underwear back home. The Oxford Rainseal gloves kept most of the water out but are still drying out! (and I missed the really heavy downpour eating fish and chips while sheltering under an archway at Pateley Bridge) I would carry my plastic rainwear in the top box but then I can't fit the helmet in when I go for a walkabout.

I suppose I could do that but then it's more stuff to carry around when leaving the bike parked up - or fit lockable panniers . In summer I would really like to be able to leave all bike gear locked up on bike and then go for a hike in countryside.
