Sucks about ya Ma Mav but as you say it does mean she can be retired from the road with a reasonable excuse now. With ageing parents myself I'm not looking forward to this sort of conversation if it's required.
Hope the accommodation search is not too painful.
Yep it solved a problem and things weren't going to get any easier for her. Trying to get her assessed to get her into a home so she has more contact with people and someone to watch over her 24/7
be careful with that Mav. the home will sell your mum's house to pay for the care and often at very under market prices.. unless your father is still alive.
speak to your mum first and explain the situation that might occur and have her sell or transfer the house into a trusting family members name before you put her into care. also you might want to get her to write a will with a solicitor.
maviczap
13-01-17, 06:03 PM
Thanks Bib, the will is in place. We have looked into doing this, but its out of our pocket. Plus there a mortgage on it too.
We'll sell the house at the market rate, pay the mortgage off, and my mum will have whats left.
Its not what we want, but its our only option.
We'll sell the house at the market rate, pay the mortgage off, and my mum will have whats left.
unfortunately you wont get the chance as it will be in the T&C's of the care home for them to guarantee they get paid. they sell the property, remove all solicitor/sales/marketing costs then what ever is left they will put into your mum's bank account then set up a DD to pay the home fees.
once the money has run out they will transfer your mum into a 'state home'. the state home will then take what ever money that your mum receives in pensions or any other means and the gov top it up. or community care and pay nowt depending on care levels.
£3200 avg a month for nursing home.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/features/how-avoid-care-home-fees-3835475
i'm in the same situation (sort of) with the wife. if i die first the state get everything. mind you i know the wife and she will top herself within a week if it happens.
maviczap
13-01-17, 08:38 PM
She's not going to a nursing/care home yet, we want her to move into a flat in a complex and rent that flat. Within this complex there's a warden, its not a nursing home.
So we can sell her house and clear the debt, and a litle left over for her. If my sister got the facts right, her pensions will cover the rent, with enough left over for food etc. My sisters in charge of this side of things, im looking after the money issues.
One thing that shocked me, is my mum is paying more for her Virgin tv, phone & broadband than we are with Sky, and I'm paying too much! She doesnt even watch movies, so lord knows what shes paying for. Thats criminal. But that'll be sorted this week as I've swapped her provider, and she'll have Freesat.
Don't know if this could be of any use to you.Last year I went to my solicitor in the uk to see about getting around this having to sell the house should either of us have to go into a nursing home later in life. This is how it panned out. 1. Put it into our two children's names.Fine, but the taxman can say you did it to avoid paying for the care Or if your children get divorced their partners can claim 50% of your children's share. 2.Put it into a trust (no charges ) so that each of our halves are protected against sale of our property should we have to go into care.they can't make you Sell and the other half can live there until they need care or die, then they can claim the money AFTER you've died,BUT if we both have to go in we would have to sell. 3.Sell now and down size and enjoy the rest,4.Sell now and rent and put the money under the mattress and enjoy it. He said number 2 was the best for us so did it,but keep all options open as the law can change and if it does it won't be in our favour.IMO go and have a word with someone who can give professional advice !!!
maviczap
13-01-17, 09:37 PM
Thanks Trev, that's very helpful. Option 2 would be good but there's still the mortgage to clear.
If I could have afforded to take a mortgage out to clear it, I could only gift it to my mum and I'd still be stuffed by option 1 taxman clause.
Option 3 is our best bet.
here's an interesting one for you. old farmer living in his house and getting on a bit. one day the social work and police turn up and remove him from the house and place him in an institutional care home as in their view he was a danger to himself and they take his house and land off him. the man had no family so nobody could speak up for him. the mad died and shortly after the property was turned into a care home........ you couldn't make it up if you tried. council's, gov, courts, police, solicitors and everything else that are connected in the legal circle are all at it and are a bunch of nasty *******s.
this happens more often than you would think.

ikea Espevar bed bases, not as bad to assemble as i thought it was going to be. i got the Hesseng mattress a few week ago and i must say its rather nice. had to get a new base as the old silentnight one was too tall for Mrs B, she had to stand on a step to get on the bed... lol. new base is much better hight.

Hope it didn't need the slats across the frame like my daughter's did, which we didn't pick up from the isle.
140 mile round trip to get them!
they come in the box.. you do know the deliver.... btw word of caution, ikea are playing a cash game in that some items are not stocked so you HAVE to pay for delivery as they are not instore items.. £35 please.

14-01-17, 09:38 PM
I seem to recall my daughter wanted to choose the bed she wanted, and then we went to the warehouse to pick it up. Due to the stress of Ikea, i missed picking the slats as part of the bed, it wasn't all in one box, and the cashier didn't say " You forgot the slats sir"

Thanks for asking Gary
Not too bad, in a bit of discomfort, but nothing that ibuprofen and paracetamol won't help with. She just needs to get mobile, the nurse was trying to get her out of bed. Until she does, she won't get discharged.
As usual no one gets a good nights sleep in hospital, so she's tired, plus they wake you up in the middle of the night to give you your meds and check your blood presure and sats. Food isn't great, its no better than when i was last in!
She should be released tomorrow.
I bought her an Amazon Fire Stick for Christmas, as i knew she'd be stuck in bed for a few days after this op, and ive just set it up. Im impressed with it, so it should keep her amused.

Glad Mrs Mav is on the road to recovery of course but I now have the "giving medication to a cat vs a dog" discussion in my head. Do you have to risk life and limb in order to give the injection or do you just wrap it in bacon and (to mix discussions) toss it like a dart?

Parents and tech. Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhhhh!!!!!!
I'm in Norfolk trying to explain how to use Skype to my parents. And how to attach files to emails and the most basic things without throttling them. I am being sooooooooo patient but it's wearing really thin now. As far as I'm concerned if something has buttons and is more complicated than a cardigan then septegenarians should not be allowed to have them. We move on to the scanner tomorrow but I may have to go for a long walk first.
My b astard brother gets away without this by hiding in Australia. He's coming over this year and I plan to have a slightly blunt conversation with him about the things he's missing out on.
And breath.....

Be careful what you wish on others.
Had the opportunity this past week to see karma in action on Facebook.
Swift and harsh. Ouch.
A young lady who is the office manager at a local household appliance store was on Facebook calling for her youngest
daughter's teacher to be fired because her child had failed to receive a good behavior award for the first time ever.
She also called on other parents to complain about the teacher and mentioned getting a petition up to have her fired.
24 hours later this same young woman was on Facebook crying because the store she where she worked had burned down and she herself had lost her own job.
I don't know if she saw any irony in that but the wife and I sure did.
Not laughing though. I wish no ill on anyone.
It was a sobering reminder that karma can come back to bite you.
And sometimes it's just as swift and as harsh as you might imagine.

I knew Aldi was cheaper than Tesco but yesterday, after a small shop of fresh food and essentials I decided on a line by line comparison, I was shocked. I bought 20 items at Aldi for £24.43. Tesco for the equivalent items came to £31.16 a difference of £6.73. Thats a hell of a saving.

Greetings from Amsterdam. I am cream crackered. Been here two days on a staff meeting with my current client (are you sure you want us riff raff contractors along, "yes", alright then) but of course I have several to-do items as a consequence. We did a team building this evening in an escape room - teams of 5 in a locked room solving puzzles in an hour to get out. What a f*&^ing waste of time - there was no way we could have done it without the minders constantly feeding us clues "hold it up to the picture of the rabbits on the wall" what???? Just let us out so we can go and get some dinner - we've been on the go for 12 hours already and I'm f-ing starving!!! I nearly chinned the guy that let us out when he smirked at us not getting the last unfathomable nonsense about the number of corners on the shapes in the mirror in the other part of the room that lit up for five seconds at random that we should have entered to a combination padlock on an unmarked cupboard beside the five other unmarked cupboards that were red herrings.... If your boss suggests doing one of these as a team building tell them to do one!
I'm off to bed. Its a public holiday here in the Netherlands on Thursday and a school holiday so we've been told to expect delays and queues at security at Schipol on our way home tomorrow evening - looking forward to that...

For any of you with elderly parents, do yourself and them a favour, by getting a Power of Attorney, so that you can look after their affairs, if they can't.
Do one for the money & one for health. I only did the money one last year, but I'm glad I did, as my mum has gone downhill really fast, made worse by a fall and hip fracture last month.
The cost has also been reduced to £89 from £120 I saw in a Hotdeals email. Don't pay for a company to do it for you, its really easy to complete the online form.
Don't leave it for the Probate to sort out
