And that was the way it went! This morning an old friend who, with someone quite well known (and who shall remain nameless until this all goes live) runs a successful motorcycle trail days outfit, phoned to ask me if I would like to lead the road tours section they are adding to the business. I would plan the tours, which would then go on the website for folks to book and I then lead the tour.
The company is buying me a brand new bike for work, along with all the kit, insurance, etc. All expenses such as fuel, overnight stops where the tour is a multi day trip, insurance, food and drink are paid for, and I get paid well too.
This changes everything. I am about to go from having no work and trying to find somewhere to live with the aid(!) of housing benefit to having enough income to not only be able to afford the rent on somewhere, but to be in a position to afford to take back the tenancy of my current home when the work is completed.
Feeling a little shell shocked about it all. Totally unexpected.
I still think that certain of the trustees of the chapel and house have failed to observe the teachings on which their church was founded.
Christian words are easy; Christian deeds are rather more difficult.
Gary that is bloody brilliant, I'm really happy for you. It sounds amazing, and a lot of fun. It's a great start to getting back on your feet. Or shiny new bike!!

there is nothing charitable about the Christian religion..... or indeed any religion or charity. they are all in it for themselves.
thats good news Gary... here's to the lockdown restrictions being lifted soon so you can get to work. sound like your going on a lot of working holidays in the future.... :-)
Couldn't agree anymore with both parts of this statement!
Gary, I'm really happy for you, in the limited personal dealings I've had with you, you seem like a really decent guy and you deserve a decent run of good fortune! I just hope you'll be keeping the SV, I still regret selling mine, even though I adore my Triumph.

Couldn't agree anymore with both parts of this statement!
My thoughts are that it's got more to do with the failure of people to observe the teachings of the chap on whom Christianity is based. I'm not interested in the apocryphal and bloody folk tales of the old testament in this sense. The teachings of the character known as Jesus were about living decently, compassionately, and charitably. It's a pity that some of these people don't pay more heed! Rant over!

Thank you Chris, you can rest assured that I will be keeping the SV. The new bike I'll be getting will be a company/work bike. The SV is an old and much loved friend and it'll be my main personal two wheeled transport for as long as it keeps going.

Ping up the website once you have one so us non-Friendface tyes can have a proper gander. An organised trip may well be a nice way to get out of the cabin fever, although I have a feeling Lady Poppy will want me to get her a bike so she can come too.

I really like trail riding. Mainly through lack of talent/fitness/offroad testis, I prefer it to more technical trials riding which is probably a heathenous admission. It's great fun and on the right route can be as easy going or technical as you like (guess that's where you come in Gary?!)
What bike are you plumping for...and do you get any say?

I’m not doing the trails Dave, Tony and Steph are taking care of that side. I shall be leading the road tours. First one is 23/24 April.
I think we’ll be going for an adventure type machine for me as I’ll be riding all sorts of roads from A and B roads to single/goat track type roads (my favourites!). We may be looking at something like a Honda Africa Twin.

I've been working all lockdown on sites with people from all over, including people travelling up from England. I'll actually be a lot safer (in terms of covid spreading) out on my bike where the only times I'll interact is at petrol stations. And even then I'll have gloves on to fill up, pay contactless and have my face covered. Bollox to missing out on another year of riding. I'm just not doing it this year

Well this is getting pretty desperate now. I am four weeks away from becoming homeless, and am having no success in finding anywhere affordable to live. Spoke with the housing folks at Powys CC yesterday and they are dealing with an avalanche of homlessness. They can offer me only BandB accommodation, so no pets, nowhere for vehicles. Work with Moto Junkies is due to start at the end of next month and I urgently need to be in somewhere by then.
This is all making me very, very anxious. Not sleeping properly now. I gave up trying after 3 hours tonight and got up again.
Really fed up with all this sh!te now.
This may be a stupid, impractical idea but could you rent a caravan or motorhome as a temporary measure?

No it's not a stupid idea at all Seeker. It is very hard to get permission for siting a residential caravan around here, and most of the sites are holiday caravans, where all the caravans are actually owned by people already.
Since posting this, and doing a post on fb, I've been given a couple of leads to follow up, and a canicross runner friend has offered me temporary accommodation at her house too. I'll see where these go.

I checked with Shelter Cymru and with a friend’s wife who is a solicitor specialising in tenancy law Mav. They’re on firm legal ground.
Tbh it’s not so much the fact that I have to vacate the property, it’s the way it was done. Serving a section 21 notice on a tenant of 25 years standing and with a perfect rent payment record, with no discussion or explanation does not seem to me to be a very good way of doing things.

A couple of Quaker friends have a lovely, old, rambling house, the end of which has been turned into a small separate annexe. I am moving into there. That was a really traumatic week. The dismantling and storage of 25 years of the most meaningful part of my life.
On Thursday while moving a large shelved sideboard I found some odds and ends that had fallen down behind it years ago. One piece was a home made birthday card put together by my ex wife and from my then 2 year old daughters. It had on it a coloured hand and foot print from each of the girls. It was a shock finding it and bloody nearly broke me.
Handed the keys back this afternoon, breaks my heart to leave that wonderful fruit and veg garden, the result of quarter of a century of toil and effort.
I'm fortunate to be where I am here in the new dwelling and all thanks to the real generosity of spirit of my friends who own the smallholding here.
I shall try and unwind a bit now.

I agree when appending 'hole' to the glorious word it transforms it into a vulgar insult, so that one should remain filtered. But I'm finding the filtering of **** a bit of a pain in the **** because it looks like I'm saying **** when I'm in fact saying ****.

hmm I leapt to add that to my vocab, but had a cautionary google to check it didn't mean "I'm an English pillock" - Dr Google seems to think it means '4rsehole' .When I say **** I mean it either as mule/bum I just don't pronounce it 'ass' because that sounds weird round these parts.

The literal translation is "man hole", so no it probably wouldn't work the way you want it to.

Haha manhole was not quite what I was looking for. However I will be using that phrase whenever I'm inspecting water drainage/pipes in the future. I'm more just wanting to freely say ass in my native pronounciation - 'ass' is too american & unnatural sounding...if I have to use Welsh instead so be it

I want to like running, it's a very quick and accessible exercise and a good way to get out but I just seem to hate every second of it. At one point last year I was running every other day for about 6 months, it got easier very quickly but never less loathesome :-k

I do enjoy running Dave. It's about a mental attitude and a particular mindset I find though. Certain parts of the run are really hard and can be almost painful in a way but overall I do enjoy it, and the sense of achievement and the end is great.
A few things that may make it more enjoyable for you.
1. Don't treat every run as a race or competitive event. Save that attitude for races and competitive events!
2. Find people to run with, but be prepared to drop them and find other running companions if they get competitive or too stoked on testosterone. It's gets wearing running with folks who feel they need to prove how much better they are than you. A lot of the people I run with are women from my local canicross group, and in my experience there is a lot less of the testosterone type competitiveness with women.
3. Get off the tarmac, out into the countryside, and onto some nice trails with good scenery. Firstly you will save your knees and ankles from taking such a hammering, and secondly, it's much more interesting running varied trails and footpaths. Feels more like an outing, and a bit of an adventure than pounding the streets.
4. Don't feel you have to keep moving. If the view is good, stop, get your breath, take a picture. If a hill gets too much, walk/jog. There's no shame in that, and you don't need to prove anything to anyone.
5. Lastly, get a dog and run canicross style. If you are not sure approach your local canicross group and borrow kit and a dog and go for a run with the group. There's always someone in the group who will loan you kit and a dog!

Just a bit more on Point 1. Divide your running up. Around 80% should be at a pace at which you can hold a normal conversation. Of the remaining 20%, ⅔ should be at a pace where you can say a few words at a time, and the last ⅓ should be your maximum pace/effort.
I learned early on that my overall pace improved not by trying to run as fast as possible all the time, but by doing longer distances. If you are constantly outside of your running comfort zone, you definitely won't enjoy your running. Slow down to a pace at which you are comfortable and enjoy it. It's amazing how far it's possible to run at the right pace.

Evening Gary
When does the new venture (bike tours) start operating?

First road tour is on the last w/e of this month. The new bike I'll be riding, a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is on it's way. Hotel in Llandudno is booked and as part of the job I get to stay there and eat a four course meal!
This sounds like a terrible ordeal!
Thought any more about the running Dave?

Exciting stuff! I was hoping you'd get an Enfield for some reason, hope it's a good'n. Do you get to familiarise yourself with (crash?) the bike ahead of the first tour?
I have. I need to find a few things first, my runners (moved house and misplaced them), time & motivation. Hoping to bake it into a morning routine if I can take that first leap.

Find a local trail running group Dave. It definitely helps get me out if I have arranged to meet for a run with someone else or a few of the other folk from my canicross group.
What colour Gary?
Not sure yet Martin. The orange one seems to be the most common colour.

Going to collect the Interceptor tomorrow from the Moto Junkies base, ready for the weekend tour. It's the red and chrome version.
Scroll down the page here (https://www.royalenfield.com/uk/en/motorcycles/interceptor.html/) and it's the first bike shown in detail.
I'm quite excited!
Enfield have also supplied us with 3 Himalayans. Hoping to get a go on one of them soon too.

welcome back to the 80's Gary, enjoy :-)
i looked at these a few years ago as they are as close to a proper classic as you can get. what put me off was the seat height at 805mm and power numbers.

The power numbers are fine for most of the roads we'll ride here Bibs. Lots of little back roads, B and C classification. These tours are about a bimble and sightseeing through some spectacular scenery, rather than being in a hurry to get anywhere.
bad advertising..

a motorbike manufacturer should not be advising people to ride without protective gear...
apart from that i might nip over to Saltire at some point for a test ride.

Moto Junkies guided tour for a group of six great people over two days completed. Out from Welshpool up to N. Wales where we stayed overnight on the Saturday, and then back to Welshpool via a different route on Sunday.
Fantastic weekend on all counts. Weather was spot on both days, the people in the group were a lovely bunch, hotel was very welcoming and comfy, and the Royal Enfield was huge fun to ride.
Absolutely knackered now though. Went to bed at 10pm last night and slept solidly for 9 hours!

Glad it went well for you Gary. Hope the traffic was better than the chaos I drove through to go see my parents for the first time in six months on Saturday - bad idea to head out on the first really nice day this year over a weekend at the start of both a Bank Holiday weekend and half term.

The main roads weren't much fun Trev, but around two thirds of the rides were on little B, and mountain roads.
Barmouth looked like something from Dantes Inferno so we didn't stop there! Bala was just as bad on the Sunday, but we went to the Leisure Centre cafe for lunch, as there was a lot more room there.

It was very warm on the Sunday Dave, although as we got back towards Bala there was a slightly cooler breeze.
Got my next tour on 21/22/23 July. I shall have to get out and recce some routes!

Nice one, Gary - sounds great.
I got to Criccieth on Sunday, and it was heaving there too. It was one of those rare days on the Llyn peninsula where there were no clouds on any of the surrounding hills at all. Went back via Llanberis and Betws-y-Coed, and the queues of traffic in both places were horrendous .... not a problem on the bike, obv.
