Hey guys, haha life has been mental really.
Its been a whirlwind of a few years, sold my house that I renovated due to horrible neighbours, renovated another then separated not long after moving in around mid 2015, divorce was finished in mid 2017, managed to buy her out, but had to sell my BMW and GSXR, got a cheaper car and have an old curvy in the car port that I want to get up and running hopefully for the summer.
Met a new irish lady thats going well just over a year now, I have 50-50% custody of my son, work from home now too which is great.
So things are looking up!

what did I miss? how are you all doing?

And people keep buying Triumphs. I'm not really envious, nonononono, not really....

My back aches. After buying my new bike last year I rather neglected the garden and Ground Elder took hold. As it's still a bit early for the greenery that's meant to be there to, well, go green, I can see and get to most of it. It is now in bags awaiting a trip to the tip next week but gosh do I have a sore back now. While I was doing so I noticed there is a hell of a lot of feeds taking hold under the hedge too, so that'll be another bad back tomorrow then!

The barbeque has been liberated from its winter hidey hole (the shed). Took it all apart, cleaned it properly, re-assembled, re-seasoned the grill plates, the lot. It will probably now p1ss down with rain for the next month as a consequence for which I apologise in advance.

Does anyone want a VTR1000? At the end of my tether with it. If the problem isn't spark timing then it's going in the sea.

littleoldman2
28-04-18, 10:18 PM
Nope, it would probably mean divorce.
You'll just have to man up and get on with it. Then after countless hours of toil and all of your savings it will be complete. Lets hope at that point you like it.

munkygunn182
30-04-18, 07:17 PM
It IS complete - that's the problem. Dropped the two knackered valves out, replaced them + guides + all 8 seals. Cleaned carbon from pistons while the heads were off, put it back together, re-timed it, and nothing... turns over, but won't fire. If I stick easy start in it, it combusts in the exhaust.

Going to look at ignition timing as plausible it's 180* out as timing was set from no reference point (thought done to match timing marks on crankshaft & cams gears).

If it ain't that, it's a first class ticket to the port!

did you grind the new valves in?

did you reset the cam chain tensioners?

did you turn it over by hand first? ALWAYS turn over a rebuilt engine by hand as if it dont turn its hitting valves.

most v2 you have to set each front and back TDC so front piston at crank TDC with piston at TDC and timing marks on cams. then rear crank at TDC and rear piston at TDC and timing marks on cams. it takes two crank revolutions to complete the 4 strokes so your rear is mid way of the front so another turn of the crank to set rear. unless the book says otherwise.

have you visually checked the plugs are sparking?

what year is the VTR?

1998 I believe. I didn't actually remove the coil packs from the bike, so believe they would be the right way round...BUT it is possible that I have the timing set 180* out, so my next move is to swap the packs over and see if vroom.

DarrenSV650S
07-05-18, 09:33 PM
Most of it! I was worried about petrol (stupid 12L dorso) and I was running out of time so didn't explore around the north of Loch Katrine as much as I wanted to. There is a small road that runs around the north of the loch and nearly goes back to Trossachs Pier. I think it would be really nice around there but I don't know if it is open to vehicles

Loch Voil is beautiful and deffo worth a visit. Glen Finglas Reservoir is really nice. Just remember not to read any of the signs on the way in :-dd
I got pretty far along it before a farmer told me there were no vehicles allowed. He was very nice about it though.

Trossachs Pier is a tourist trap and not worth visiting unless you are going on the boat trip because the road is blocked off right at the start of the loch.

Loch Arklet is beautiful too. There is a little tea room at Stronachlachar with great views

I was expecting good views at Inversnaid and they would have been, but when I got there the sun was getting low and facing right at me so I couldn't see the mountains very well

I'd really like a weekend to give me enough time to see all of the area. And a canoe! It was so calm and quiet a canoe would be ideal

littleoldman2
07-05-18, 10:20 PM
I may have petrol problems too as I'll be using a Van Van. I'm planning on a week or so after the Knockhill BSB weekend. Not motorbike touring, more sightseeing on a motorbike.

DarrenSV650S
08-05-18, 06:41 AM
Don't go on Sunday then. There's a petrol station in Aberfoyle that is closed on Sundays. The next closest one I could find on google was Callander

Not yet. It’s a lens replacement. £5k to get it done privately so I keep finding reasons to put that off (lack of 5 grand being the usual reason).

In the meantime a dark visor makes an enormous difference and I was just bimbling about anyway.

I meet the standard for driving, it’s just a pretty low standard IMO.

I might as well not have had one. Part of the reason for getting them both roadworthy was to do something;

A. Keep them both
B. Sell one and keep the other
C. Sell them both and buy something else
D. Sell them both and don’t buy something else

Still not sure which option I’ll take.

MOT number two today followed by a wee run out (I’ve picked the right week to take off work). One advisory for a shoogly hugger - I’ll sort that at some point.

Worked out from the MOT history it’s not been on the road since the end of 2015.

I’ve lost a bit of weight since then so the suspension settings are a bit out. Still handles well though. I prefer the bars to clip-ons.
