I think me SV is getting closer to being someone's track bike. Not mine as I'm not that good. I do however think I'll have to keep it a bit longer just to warrant the new shoes. Which I really like.

I'd still consider another SV though, but I think I have an itch to scratch first, hopefully one that doesn't kill me.

A deadly trio, each makes the others worse in a really unpleasant cycle.

Just focus on the Pyrenees for now Mav, it sounds like it could be a much needed respite.

A verse from a song written by a friend of mine.

"Despite what we call progress all my problems still remain,
Relationships, and mortgage payments coming round again.
Applying more technology just makes me realise,
We're less healthy and less satisfied, and probably less wise."

Thanks Gary, at least riding in the mountains means I can only think about the road going up, and going downhill I get my adrenaline rush and I have to focus entirely on that.

Love the mountains, almost as much or equally as much as I love the sea

garynortheast
14-07-19, 07:34 AM
I know what you mean about mountains and sea. Living close enough to the mountains here to be able to be in amongst them within 30 minutes and by the sea within 45 minutes is brilliant. I'm happy to spend all day just walking, running or motorcycling in the mountains given the chance.

Currently I'm following Voltaire's chosen method of dealing with the world and spending time on the garden.

maviczap
14-07-19, 08:53 AM
I'm a 5 min walk from the sea, and I see it every day.

No mountains in Suffolk, but sometimes it does have big skies in the summer, but not like the mountains :-)

If I want mountains & sea, I go to my villa in Turkey. It is at the foot of a 1,969 metre mountain and 10 minutes from the famous lagoon at Olu Deniz. The world paragliding championship is held off the mountain every October, with the gliders landing below on the esplanade.

Sir Trev
22-07-19, 06:23 PM
See if this sounds familiar. Maybe not the exact words but...

Really ought to go and do some exerci - ooooo look, a baby woodpecker [reaches for binoculars].

I am hopeless. My intention of giving up crisps during the week was also a disaster today. Still, I did finally stop by the in-house gym today and picked up a membership application form. The cheeky so and so's charge contractors more than employees which grates a bit but as it's been over three months since I quit my last gym it's high time I got back to it.

Will take a long way round ride to what is now my nearest Trumpet dealer tomorrow (the two local ones have lost their franchise/closed) to book Hugh in for his 2nd year service. Have you been sniffing paint thinners Mav? Most of us think the opposite. Especially when you have a colleague who pulls up a chair and explains in great detail the reconciliations he's doing that are nothing to do with me for ten minutes five times or more every day while I'm really busy and clearly not interested. He does it to our over-worked and rather frazzled boss too so I don't think his contract will be renewed somehow.

Oh the irony

Yesterday's trip to the recycling centre, guy arrived in the bay next to mine, he got out of his car to dump his stuff to recycle in a green and planet saving exercise? Just left his car idling whilst he emptied it. Let his young daughter (about 5 years old?) wander round the back of his car during this exercise too. Great example of good parenting

Watching BBC news this morning. The reporter was reporting on the current situation with the repairs to the Walley Bridge dam. The pictures showed the empty muddy pool that was the reservoir. The reporter was on the walkway on the top of the dam wall, wearing a life jacket!!!!! Let's hope it breaks his fall when he falls off the dam wall and he deploys it. FFS it's nuts

Managed to get a test drive today in the model of car I'd like to get next. Despite me showing the young muppet several identical cars on Autotrader that were cheaper he refused to to come off his inflated price so he didn't get a sale. I spent all morning cleaning up my current car to make it look good for a PX deal though so I don't want to drive it now ](*,):driving::D

Not bad Gary, a bit weary as I'd been away all since Tuesday, but I went out and had a couple of beers with a good mate at lunchtime.

He'd had a terrible month as both his parents had passed away within weeks of each other, so we shared each others problems in the sunshine by the sea. Which was good therapy for both of us.

garynortheast

Problem sharing definitely helps to ease the burden I think. Being able to talk about stuff helps to set it out straight and makes it more understandable I think (if that makes sense).

Bring back the Duffs, and the Peds for branch line working!

I'll never forget being on a Southern (third rail electric) service on the classic day back in 1991 when we had the "wrong type of snow". Nobody believes it these days but they really did announce it and I was very lucky to get back to Brighton at all that evening.

Anyone see the documentary on the great freeze of 1962/3 a few months ago?

There was great footage of steam locomotives with ploughs on powering through snow that was almost as deep as the loco, can't see that happening with diesel or electric trains.

A lot of satisfaction, a small profit and enjoyable day. That’s enough to make me happy!

garynortheast
31-10-19, 07:58 AM
I’ll expand a bit on that.

I took my button accordion and met up with a fiddle playing friend in order to play music at the large, bustling street market in Machynlleth. We had a great day; got folks dancing, had loads of appreciative comments about bringing the street to life, earned a decent amount of money between us, had lunch at a brilliant little Asian street food stall, followed by tea and (for me, vegan) cake. Part of our takings for the day included a very nice loaf of bread and two 2ft long leeks!

All of this was bookended for me by the glorious train ride from Welshpool to Machynlleth and back.

If I could earn a living playing street music I’d give up most of the IT work. Part of the trouble though is that the weather is too unreliable and travel costs are now too high. Fuel costs for the car make any distance prohibitively expensive, and rail fares, while cheap west of the border (especially with a Cambrian rail card) skyrocket as soon as I get into England. A shame, as I like travelling by train.
