View Full Version : The All New Megathread
What did you get in the end John? Lawnmower that is...I faffed about for ages reading reviews, there was so much contradiction on the models I was interested in. I definitely didn't want a battery powered item or petrol mower. So I went to see some in the flesh and ended up with this.

Should have plenty of oomph, and so much better value than a cordless one, unless you already have the chonky batteries and charger. I've got almost 250 sq m of grass, and with paths and beds, it's a sod if you have a trailing cable, hence me going cordless.
Glad you got it sorted anyway.

Morning all. A bit cooler here today. We had a storm yesterday afternoon but just a short one. It was only enough to half fill my water butt, but there was a lot of water on the road between Llanfechain and Llanfyllin. I'm hoping the sun might put in an appearance today.
How's the week ahead looking for everyone?

We had a storm yesterday too, which washed a load of moss of the roof and blocked the filter on the water butt interceptor, so we didn't get much of a top up. All cleared out now so hopeful for a little more rain (preferably overnight).
We had a nice run out to Tyddyn Mawr tea-room in Cwmystradlyn on Saturday, driving the pretty way over the tops via Ysbyty Ifan. There was a book fair on and we had a stroll by the lake, not too far as we had wobbly dog with us. Highly recommend a visit to the area if you like walking and/or cake.
Makes the week of work ahead more bearable.
Photo linked below is from Facebook. I'm not sure it will show up to non-Facebook folks, but if it does it is my VFR in front of Cwmystradlyn slate mill from an earlier trip.

Hope the weather is kinder than it's forecast to be John. Enjoy your trip away.We got off lightly on the weather. Back now. Couldn't believe how many 50 limits on the M1, roadworks that went on for too many miles with nothing much happening. I thought they'd put a stop to that after the M6 fiasco many years ago.

Hello from Essex - visiting The Monkey.
The roadworks on the M25 around Potters Bar on the clockwise were a massive holdup. Miles of cones and crawling traffic but no sign of any work site, let alone people doing any work... Added half an hour to our journey. So irritating.

Back home again. Had a lovely day out yesterday exploring the villages just upstream from Flatford (as in The Haywain) and found a very nice Tiptree Tearoom for lunch in Dedham. Lady Poppy and the Monkey then rented a rowboat for a while leaving me and potential SIL Jim hunting for geocaches.
Thankfully a much easier journey home and with lovely weather here today I shall mow the lawn before tinkering in the greenhouse.

It was great to meet my wonderful nieces and great nieces, been a long time since we last saw them, that was the good part, but the road traffic was crazy, glad I didn't use the bike. Then on starting the return journey I noticed part of the cars wing mirror missing, looks as if its been prised off. Then, on the main road heading homeward we came upon the aftermath of a crash involving a m/cyclist, that was upsetting in itself, so overall when we arrived home we were not in the best frame of mind.

I regularly get the same. Yes, sometimes it's nice to chill and enjoy the view but there are plenty of opportunities to do that when you can't overtake because of oncoming traffic etc.

It seems that years ago the reverse was true, I'd be keeping to the left as the Fireblade boys came storming through.
I'm not comfortable when I'm being followed by another bike, so I usually move to the left and signal that I'm happy for the other chap to overtake that way there's no misunderstanding to avoid an incident.

I don't particularly mind being followed or following, to be honest, but as you say, even at my usual 65 - 70ish on open roads I tend to find I'm rarely being overtaken these days.
Some people are leaders some are followers. I'm a follower. My riding friend often suggests a destination and I let him lead. When there's nothing in front he drives at, or close to, the speed limit but if we catch up with a vehicle doing, say, 59 mph in a 60 limit it MUST be overtaken.
I prefer it when he rides his BSA Goldstar 650 it's a little more relaxing (for me) today he rolled up on his MT07 and he's refitted his Akropovic exhaust which meant the scenery was a blur. I think I saw Mablethorpe but I blinked so I cannot guarantee it. I remember Spilsby but only because we stopped.

Riding with friends is much easier as you know pretty much that you can judge how they're getting to react. When you're riding solo and come up to a group of riders then that's a whole different game.

Morning all, how's everyone today?
Been like parcel central here this morning. Slug nematodes and liquid seaweed delivered for the garden, followed by a new Alpkit inflatable sleeping mat in prep for the two days of hiking and wildcamping in the mountains over my birthday next month, then 25kgs of organic, wholemeal flour for breadmaking and baking.
Jan and I have a trip down to my sister and BiL's smallholding tomorrow for my nephew's 50th birthday. Going to be a big do as I have a huge family, and a lot of them live with spouses and offspring on the holding. We're going to camp overnight in one of the fields. It would have been nice to have gone on the bike as the weather looks pretty good, but we'll be taking the two hounds and loads of food down with us, so we'll need to go in the car.
Just been out looking at my pond in the front garden and the red damselflies are back. I also spotted a newt in there the other day. Last year the blanketweed was trying to take over but I've noticed this year that the ramshorn snails have multiplied in number such that they've cleared a huge amount of the stuff. The pond is looking much better for it to with the other plants now able to grow without being smothered.
How is everyone else's weekend shaping up?

Full fat Coke! I'm not taking the mickey, its very helpful to kayakers that use the Holme Pierrepont WW course on the Trent. The site is downstream of Nottingham, so water quality is generally not good. I hardly ever went there for that reason, but prophylactically drinking coke afterwards definitely helped prevent the "Trent Trots".

Full fat Coke!
Seconded - it's an almost infallible cure for melancholy humours of the digestive system (I believe the phosphoric acid in it is particularly hostile to bacteria). Especially if stirred to get rid of most of the bubbles.

Thirded! Yes, sound advice. This was also the recommendation of the rowing club my son used to go to in Stratford, in case of an unintended dip in the Avon when it goes wrong. There was always a bottle of the stuff kept in his kit bag just in case.

Good of you Mav. I bent the ear of the prospective Labour candidate the other week. Last year we pitched near the river Wear on our way to a festival at Bellingham, in the morning it stunk to high heaven a bike ride revealed a large sewerage up stream so that was that mystery solved. Re bread flour -I have used flour from Shiptons Mill. If I have too much I stick it in the freezer if I have room. Our wholefood co operative sells it in 3kg bags sourced from a working windmill so now I usually have 3kg organic white and 3 of wholemeal. 25kg is difficult for me to store I also will buy a bag of different sorts when out and about - I quite enjoy looking at old working mills.I only use it to make sourdough bread .

Trev Towers is a mere three miles from the village of Walters Ash, which is the home of the RAF (it was Bomber Command during WW2 and folling the amalgamation of them all it is now simply known as RAF Command). The bad news is that being so close I will no doubt be in the first wave of people vaporised when Mad Vlad realises he cannot win and pushes the red button, but on the plus side... when big occasions happen, like Trooping Ths Colour did today, the planes taking part in the flypast often exit London airspace to the West and go straight over us on their way to a second flypast over RAF command. Not sure where the cargo and tanker planes went but I ran outside in time to see the Typhoons and Hawks come over. Tally ho chaps!!
We had the annual Cosford airshow last Sunday, so we get to see some interesting planes. RAF Shawbury is also nearby and acts as a base for some of the planes and it's worth going there to catch some of them.

Be interested to see what you make of either system.
TA is in for a service so took out a Hornet for a test ride. The shop didn't have anything with DCT or E-clutch to try. I thought it would be Interesting to compare it to my bike considering it's got the same engine.
It's definitely a hooligan machine. Very rapid, weighs nothing but a bit small for me. The acceleration was very addictive especially with the fitted quick shifter. I've not ridden a naked bike for a long time so that may have enhanced the feeling of speed. I wouldn't need anything faster than this. Imagine a 125 with a 750 engine.
Getting back on the TA made for a much more relaxing experience until another difference got my attention, the brakes were so much better on the Hornet, suspension was much firmer too.

Interesting comparison John. One reason I went for the 800RE was the radial brakes, which are excellent. But my suspension, like yours, is very soft. Good for the potholes I'm now used to saying.

Some of the road tests I've read mentioned the twitchy handling on the Hornet along with its off idle abruptness. I sat on one and it fits me better than my GSX since I'm short. What made me pick the GSX was the mid-range torque, the fact I trust my Suzuki dealer and the fact the nearest Honda dealer is much further away.

Spooky to think we were both in Exeter on Thursday Gary!

Morning all. Grey and not overly warm here. Off out for a walk with Mabel shortly and then probably getting on with stuff in the garden.
What's everyone else up to?

Spookily, it's my anniversary tomorrow. Cannot believe its been 30 years since Lady Poppy and I got hitched. We'll save the celebrations to the weekend when the Munchkin and her boyfriend come over.
Hope you have a nice day on Wednesday John.

Morning orgers. A few things to do today - vote, walk Mabel, bit of garden work, and then if it's warmed up a bit a ride out on the bike.

A belated happy anniversary to you both Trevor.

Did we all go and exercise our perogative in a little booth today? I couldn't as I had to go and vote instead... [\smut]
We certainly did. Couldn't wait to get down to the polling station.

Yep, me too. A slightly more cheerful result, although it remains to be seen what Starmer does. He got elected on 3.2 million fewer votes than Jeremy Corbyn got in 2017.
I'm heartened to see the Greens did so well, gaining all four of their target seats. Less pleased to see that Fartages Fascists also got 4 seats. And not happy about the fact that the media is giving them lots of publicity and pretty much none to the Greens.

That says more about who owns the UK MSM than it does the UK, although the BBC should just not have Reform on any program. I'm a little disappointed Plaid didn't do better, we need people who will speak up for Wales. Welsh Labour MPs will just do as they are told.

I know what you mean about Plaid Mike, although they have gained a couple more seats. The plus side is that we've kicked every last tory out of Cymru.

Properly hosing it down here today, as it did for most of yesterday... Looks like we're in for a poor upcoming week of it too.
Was hoping to clip my hawthorn hedge this weekend and catch up with some weeding but not much hope of either now as I don't fancy getting soaked in the process.

Been hammering down with rain here too. Still, at least it's refilling my water butt.

Morning all. Blue skies and sunshine here, although still pretty cool for July. Weather looks pretty grim for tomorrow.
How's it looking for everyone else?

Sunny but cool here too. Looks like the only decent day for the next week or so, judging by the long-range forecast. Did St Swithin's Day come early this year, or did someone wash their bike?

Morning all. Grey and dreary here, and not overly warm either. It's not terribly conducive to getting outside and doing stuff, but I'm going to have to get out and on with a few things I think.

Morning all. Back from a very enjoyable 3 days away with Jan up near Conwy. A couple of nights a the Groes Inn, and trips to Bodnant Gardens (huge and needs a repeat trip there), Niwbyrch and a walk to the point with the towers (https://maps.app.goo.gl/S3Kw75MMGho59v769), and a mooch around the very scenic town of Conwy, with a stop for coffee and cake at the brilliant L's Coffee and Books cafe on the high street.
Something of a change today with an online, 3 hour meeting this morning, and setting up a new PC for someone this afternoon. Bit of a shame to be indoors with the sun shining, and my new reg/rec sitting on the table waiting for me to fit it to the bike. :-(

Bodnant Gardens are fantastic. You are right they are huge and need several visits to explore. They are constantly changing as various plants come in or die back. We go probably once a month and still see new things. Last month was how the wild flower meadow has developed and bloomed, orchids everywhere! We've not been to any evening openings this year, but that's a favourite to take a picnic on a nice day.
