Still standing here and preparing the Boxing Day buffet. Will be eating leftovers for the rest of the week, but that's good as far as I'm concerned. Bubble and squeak from leftover veg is one of the highlights of Christmas food for me.

Thick mist here-Wife trogs over to a local pub to take part in Boxing day celebrations with her Garland dancing side. I usually cycle over but there is no fun cycling in the weather as it is so will give it a miss this year.

Boxing day walk in the hills with daughter Sioned this morning. Stunning weather and scenery and all without having to drive anywhere. I am very fortunate to live here.
Was deliberately a quiet one this year at our household (and further diminished by wife suffering with a heavy cold and cough illness) so we didn't gear up for a massive meal etc, meaning few leftovers to deal with: But the dog and cat will certainly enjoy a few days of extras of scraps from the whole chicken we cooked.
It was actually quite refreshing not to get caught up with a 'forced fun' bandwagon and to take some proper rest and guilt-free relaxation.:)

I am very fortunate to live here.I don't agree Gary. You live where you do through your choices, which I suspect are good ones. My wife often says the same, but I point out that we have worked to live here and made choices to enable us to continue living here.
Never say it's fortune when you've worked to be where you are.
I'm glad you live somewhere you love.

Ruffy, we had a Chrimbo like yours last year (without the poorly bit). Daughter was at her inlaws and my parents insisted on staying home just the two of them. Lady Poppy and I had a wonderfully restful break.
Four of us this year and we've just got back from a nice walk through the woods around the NT manor house across the park from us. The Chiltern hills are not quite as dramatic as the Welsh hills Gary has on his doorstep but we enjoy them all the same.
We've had a nice festive season so far. Hope you all have too.

Mabel and I are off out for a walk with a friend and his dog shortly. We should be able to grab two or three hours in the hills before the weather turns.

Well the dog is better, but not right yet. So a walk with the dog is on the cards without taking the watering can for cleanup! We plan to get out before it gets too breezy. He needed steroids to sort him out, probiotics and binders were not cutting it.
garynortheast
31-12-24, 01:20 PM
It's the steroids which have sorted Mabel too, Mike. The antibiotics and anti-inflammatories weren't doing the job beyond three weeks at a time. Glad Jack is on the mend though.

Good to know the Org pooches are feeling better.
The Monkey and her other half have just pulled out of the drive at the end of their Christmas visit and I had hoped to get out on Bullseye for an hour or so today. Alas the lovely weather of the last two days is now gone, with the wind picking up badly since lunch and the sky looking very threatening. And it's almost dark already! So I'll stay inside instead.

Out for a curry last night at a brilliant place in Welshpool called Spice UK. I have never seen it so busy before and the staff were absolute heroes. We had a superb meal, then went home to a cup of tea and bed before midnight.
Lazy morning in bed this morning until Jan and I made a last minute decision to take the hounds and go for a walk on the beach at Aberdyfi. The trip there was interesting! heavy rain in places, lots of water on the roads, a fairly major landslip onto the road at Cwm Dugoed, and huge areas around Machynlleth and the Dyfi valley under water. Great walk on the beach in very strong winds, Mabel and Oscar had a fine old time chasing each other about at high speed.
Back home now with the heating on and a bowl of rice and veg. A very enjoyable day

Morning all. Cold and frosty here this morning, but at least the rain has finally stopped. I'm meant to be doing a bit of gardening for someone today but I think it'll be no more than clearing away the old runner bean plants and supports. Pruning all the roses can wait until they're not frozen.
Anyone else got anything planned?
Sir Trev
02-01-25, 06:27 PM
For many of us that count beans for a living this is a rubbish week. Day 1 of year end, where everything we do gets even more scrutiny than usual. And it's flippin cold. Ah well, at least it's only another day to the weekend.

Frosty but dull here today, with yesterday's frost not melting off my car till mid afternoon. And of course its now snowing, not a very regular occurrence here in Bucks, and the forecast for tomorrow is double figures and pouring rain... So typical British weather really :smt043
I got the box for the Christmas tree back down from the loft this afternoon so Lady Poppy will be dismantling the decs tomorrow.
Another ho hum weather event (so far) on the Humber estuary - a bit of rain, 4°C at 11am.
Sir Trev
05-01-25, 02:04 PM
We ended up with an inch or so of settled snow by the time we got up. It's now pouring down with rain and most of the white stuff is gone...
Stuck indoors for another day is a bit depressing though. If I get bored enough I may resort to doing some pre-decorating prep in the bathroom. I've only been putting it off for the last ten years or so.

It cold here too and very icey. The council has dropped the ball again with gritting.....
WFH has its benefits!
Sir Trev
07-01-25, 06:23 PM
I was supposed to go into the office today. Car started reluctantly, set the defrosters going (I do like my heated front screen!), eventually got the ice off the side windows, and then found I had no heater fan... With no way to keep the inside from misting up I gave up and went back inside. After a morning on the smart charger I did a loop around town and the fan burst into life after a mile or so.
Modern cars can be a right PITA. If you don't drive them very regularly they shut down the functions they think will help keep the spark plugs going. Which is no good if you cannot see. I'll try for the office again tomorrow so fingers crossed.
My dad is very ill and I may need to drive up to Norfolk at any time, so I do hope my car does not sulk any more about not being used over Christmas!

Morning all. Frozen solid out there this morning. I'm supposed to be doing some gardening for someone today but to be honest I don't think I'll be able to do much beyond turning and tidying the contents of the compost bins. This is assuming I can get the car down the hill here on the ice!
How's the morning looking for everyone else?
Luckypants

Frozen up pretty solid here too. Mel's been using our little car for work as it has all-season tyres which are better in these conditions than the standard summer tyres on our main car. Plus its much lighter so much less momentum if things go pear shaped. The dog has taken refuge in his day bed next to the radiator to keep toasty. :D

08-01-25, 10:30 AM
Just read an article requesting gardeners not to turn compost heaps at the moment as there is a chance that hedgehogs could be nicely tucked up inside trying to survive the freezing conditions. In the autumn I opened the lid of mine to be greeted by 4 staring eyes, they belonged to a couple of field voles. On a later occasion a pair of eyes belonged to a rather plump toad (probably due to the feast of snails that must have been available! Therefore my compost heaps will not be turned this winter.
Sir Trev
09-01-25, 06:13 PM
Sounds like opening your compost bin is an interesting adventure RT. I found a grass snake once in my old wooden ones, but also several rats, so my current plastic compost daleks sit on fitted bases which in turn sit on thick galvanised mesh.

RIP dad. I was getting ready to head up to Norfolk this morning when I got a call at half six to say he'd just passed. Thankfully the minus six weather must have put people off travelling as I made it up here in good time, considering the rush hour timing on the M25. Mum is doing OK and has several of us with her now, which is a comfort to her.
Being decimated by cancer is a horrible way to go but the care he received at the end from the NHS as the local council was phenomenal, and he left us peacefully and calmly.
I'll be remembering him as the brave fireman that he was for so many years. Here's a pic a friend of mine found once - he's in the driving seat looking really happy. In his prime, doing a job he put his all into. Farewell dad. You'll be missed by a lot of people who loved you a heck of a lot.

Thanks all. We've been waiting for this to happen since he really started go go downhill about nine months ago. We've had time to prepare but of course it's always a blow when it comes. On the bright side, he lived way longer than one of his local GP's said he would, I think to spite him, and he had a nice day on his 80th birthday in November when the whole family came to spend the day with him.
I'm trying to break it to mum now that as he knew everyone in the village, and did odd jobs, gardening and/or decorating for so many of them (usually refusing payment) , that there may well be a lot more people turning up at the crematorium than she thinks...

Logged on to work for a few hours today, just to keep grounded. The stuff that built up in the two days I was offline...sheesh.
Been a whirlwind today. Mum's countertype dishwasher arrived, we've been out and got her a smartphone and contract SIM (been PAYG button phone up to now), ordered a new freezer (much smaller one), reassembled the sitting room furniture that was packed into a spare bedroom to make room for the bed dad needed, and took the leftover drugs to the health centre pharmacy for safe disposal (including the morphine-based stuff). Mum will feel the empty space most of course, but she has already found the network of friends local to her a great help. As a kid, our road (all bungalows) was full of children and young families, but now it's mainly older people, including several other widowed ladies of her vintage. I'll give a call tonight but I'm sure she will adapt and be fine.

Morning folks. Grey and damp here with the threat of quite a bit of rain heading this way.
I never made it out on the bike in the end yesterday. I just ran out of time, and when I drove out of Llanfyllin yesterday, the main road for about a mile was covered in a thick layer of mud from tractors and trailers. The front end of the car was slipping and sliding, so I doubt anything much on two wheels would have stayed upright. Dirty sods really should be made to clean up after themselves.

I hate that. Farmers have to farm but as you say, that stuff can be lethal for any vehicle, not just bikes. Towards the end of last year I came within a couple of inches of dropping the bike because of a slew of gravel and loose mud that had fallen off a trailer halfway round a corner, it was like riding on marbles.

Never seen one before, as they're a migrant visitor. When I initially saw them, I thought 'oh, two thrushes' but then realised they had markings like no thrush I'd seen.

I'm not sure what's going on with my clothes but they all keep shrinking. Luckily I tried my suit on last night, first time in a year, and it was a struggle to get the trousers on, let alone done up. Not sure what the saddleback machine is Craig. The earliest ones from 1856 - 1859 were known as Turtleback machines (https://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/singer_turtle_back_model_sewing_machine.html). There are apparently only 8 of them left in existence, so yes, very rare! I've only seen pictures of them, it's highly unlikely I'll ever see one in the flesh (or more appropriately, in the cast iron).
Here's the machine I took back to Becca at Ewe and Ply (wool shop in Oswestry) this morning. Works beautifully now although the bobbin winder design is a bit...umm...crude! Coat of wood wax on the case and base has smartened things up a little.

This was taken (https://forums.sv650.org/showpost.php?p=3145425&postcount=50) near the quarry at Tegg's Nose in late December '24, we had a weird temp inversion so the Cheshire Plains were completely fog-bound but Tegg's was above it.

Excellent
Now back from my nephews wedding in Shropshire. I am exhausted. We had a cottage in the grounds of the hotel (Netley Hall) but it was almost beside the function building. Needless to say the younger revellers were still dancing away after we threw in the towel.
My left eye was getting quite sore after a few hours from the burst blood vessel I sustained on Wednesday. And would you believe another one went as we were on the drive home. Two corners of my eye look horrible now. Probably a sign I need to take it easy.Netley Hall Dorrington. You were only a couple of miles from my home.

If Lady Poppy heads up to Oswestry to visit her sister and I'm allowed to to come up separately on the bike, I'll pop in for a brew.

Sorry to hear that Gary. If I come up for that brew with John it would be good to see you again too. Although that does assume seeing me again would be any kind of help...

Morning all. Grey and dismal here. Weather's pretty crap too. Hope you're all having a relaxing weekend.
Thank heavens for the org and the good folk here.

Grey and gloomy here too, it's a soggy blanket across the North! Looks dryer (albeit cold) for the second half of the week, so the bike will be ready to go just in case.
Today we're delivering the latest issue of Bollington LIVE!, a local magazine for local people (!) to around 100 addresses in the area. Something my wife volunteered us for :-|

Morning all. Bit low this morning, not helped by the weather and the fact that I woke at 3.30am and couldn't get back to sleep. Going to get wrapped up and head out with Mabel for a walk.
Hope everyone else is having a better start to the week.
