My legs are shredded, were already feeling a bit worse for wear after the training this week, but had an out and back 6 miler, with negative split.

I managed it (just) and the neg split too, stayed at the lower end of the pace band I was running, so all in all pleased with that.

Looking forward now to a big fat KFC tomorrow lunchtime though. Might even have Sat off running too so my legs are a bit fresher for the 10 miler.

today i did 5 miles (8km) in 56 mins

my calfs were aching a bit towards the end, but i was happy to do the full 5 miles, and in les than 1 hour.

the 5 mile run outside i think will be harder, and take longer.

next goal is 10km on treadmill

i have a 3 or 5 mile oustside run planded for saturday

It will be harder outside - more impact on your legs. You will love the sense of achievement that you get though.

On tip though, where you can stay on tarmac surfaces and off of pavement slabs, that willreduce the impact and therefore your pains.

Oh and good luck mate.

Hovis - How are you measuing calorie burn? Are you going on the numbers the machine says or are you using an independant heart rate monitor? My understanding is that the stats reported by the machine are normally rarther innaccurate, an HR monitor might be better (it will at least be more consistent in terms of relative no. of calories burned between different machines etc).
independant heart rate monitor

Hovis - Why are you obsessed about the calorie figure? Have you considered the easier solution? Eat less calories?
im not obsessed, i just like to see the figures

Hovis - IMHO you've got three angles you can take when exercising - loose fat, gain muscle, improve cardio vascular. It sounds like you're focussing on the first - fat loss (which is perfectly respectable) . If so you really should think about looking at what you eat. Also consider, if you aren't already, doing some weights. It's surprisingly how effective weight training is for loosing fat.
i dont bother doing weights as i do 2x1 hour circuit training and 1 hour boxercise once a week

Hovis - A bit more about what you're trying to achieve, if you're prepared to share the info, might help us help you.
my main goal was to lose weight, i lost 8 stone, but put a stone back on, so jan the 1st i was 13 stone 1lb, but i weighed yesterday and i was 12 stone 12lb (so i have lost 5 lb so far)
i think my goal now is to concentrate on running, inprove distance and speed, and im not 100% sure, but thinking of doing ½ marathan in oct.
i would still like to lose a bit more weight and get closer to 12 stone, but that will come with the running

Hovis - To echo what others have said - get off the treadmill and into the great outdoors.
all in good time, i like the treadmill, i find when i run outside, i start off too quick, then get tired and have to slow down or even walk. '

Try this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/health_and_fitness/4284288.stm) link for an explanation as to what they are and what causes them. You know it could be something as simple as your laces being tied to tightly. But can be caused by all sorts.

My new trainers gave me shin splints for the first two runs I used them.

I've had this before, but when I was doing loads on tae kwon do, which was years ago.

I can't work out what could have caused it as I've hardly done any mileage and I haven't been wearing old or new trainers. I must be faulty.

When you do the secong half quicker than the first.

yes, i dont think i can make this week, as im helping a freind.

but i have had a look at the times, and last week, the person that came in last, was still 2 mins faster than me:p

but they publish your times on the site, every time you run, and then you can see how you are coming on, it looks a great idea, plus it says they meet up for coffee after in tescos, which is nice.

Exactly what Tim In Belguim said, it is where you run the second half of a run faster than the first, for me this is really difficult as I always start too quickly.

Yesterday I ran the first 3 miles too fast which meant I had to run the second 3 miles even faster, which I really struggled with but managed to do. So that may help me with goal number one of the year.

I'm ahead of schedule for my training plan but I'm sure it is gonna start getting harder from here on in. Managing 5 minutes running, 2 minutes walking x 4. Legs aren't feeling as tight as they were when I first started either. Got some decent socks and it doesn't half make a difference.

Hmm I always start out slower than I finish so I guess most of my times will always be a negative. I don't record splits though and just work out my average over the whole distance against time.

I went for my 4 mile run today at work. I got back 2 seconds shy of half hour. So a 7.30 minute mile average. It's official, I am not as fast as I thought I was. Still not disappointed though with my progress considering I have only been back running for less than two months.

If my knees are not complaining tomorrow morning, I will do half marathon distance.

I do however seem to be getting bruising on my arches. They were quite tender to touch after my ten mile run on Wednesday and were hurting for the first half of the run today. Not quite sure if it is the trainers or my running style that is causing that.

Everything's relative, surely - for a sprinter, half a mile is a long way.

Personally, I consider 10 miles+ a long run.

I think LSR - Long slow runs generally refers to the Sunday morning slow paced slog. I guess linked to marathon training more than anything else.

When I was doing my marathon I would do anything up to a 20 miler on a Sunday morning.

Unless I am doing intervals or fartleks I put everything under general, I think.

nice day off running today for my rest day. Another 12 miler tomorrow if the wind drops somewhat. Hoping that this one feels easier than last week but that seems to be how its worked out so far.

90% of it is in the mind I reckon. Couple of weeks and I'll be at my half marathon distance with a little luck. I tend to do 'out and back' runs so each new distance brings a little bit of new scenery to look at half way through :-)

I've lost about 6Kg since I started my training which is almost 10% of my bodyweight, amazing really when I think about it. Thats equivalent to fitting a £1500 titanium race system to my race bike so should be useful come April when the season starts again!

catastrophe, the battery in the mp3 player packs in:(
oh well never mind, but about 30 seconds later, catastrophe number 2;) relise i need a poo, so, i soldier on and try not to think about it.

the run was 1½ miles down hill, then turn round and come back, not a steep hill but gradual, anywho as i get half way im thinking i realy do need a poo. but if i stop in the bushes i might get arested, but more importantly, it would efect my time.

so, i think ah feck it what will be will be.

abour 30 houses from home i realy need to go the turtle head is on its way, i dropped my water bottle out of my pocket... i left it there, as stopping would have aded a few seconds on to my time, time which i did not have, and i would rather litter the street, than my boxers,

so........ i finaily get home, and i made it,

my best 3 miles on the treadmill was about 34mins, so was expecting to do it in about 38

but what time do you think i did it in?

28 mins:takeabow:

maybe the fact i needed a poo pushed me a bit?

I did just over 10 miles this morning after not running for a week. I must say it was my hardest run so far this year, over 5 miles up hill, mostly steady inclines but some steep parts!! I really, really felt like cutting it short at 7 miles but determination got the better of me. I got back in just under 1hr 20 and am totally knackered!!! I don't feel better for it right now :(, although I might do later :)

I am jst back from 11 miles in 1h30m exatly. Little bit hilly but prob not as vertical as Foxy's. Not run for most of this week as I have had yet another cold - grrr - and sa I still have a bit of gunk about me, today I had a snot-streaked face. Enjioyed every step. Met 7 other runners out, didn't know any of them, 1 said hello and the others had iPods so didn't know whether it was Christmas or Easter.

Dripping over lappie so off in search of hot water:D

Tim in Belgium
17-01-09, 05:04 PM
Just been out for my first run since before Christmas, went to an area of sand dunes that I don't know, got a little lost when I couldn't find the waymarkers and was out for a little longer than planned, for 1hr48mins, average HR of 164 and a max of 184, so not bad and I ran the whole way. No idea of distance as I was partly lost, but I wasn't breaking any speed records.

It was nice to find plenty of ups and downs and soft ground, some quite wild scenery (for Holland!), a great low sun shining (until it set) and for some strange reason loads of Highland cattle. I think I'm going to be a little stiff tomorrow so I've done some post run stretches, maybe a night on the beers tonight will help ;)

how accurate is google maps?

how much do you drink when running, and how much liquid do you carry? (i just took a little 200ml bottle)

how do you manage if you need a poo?

Tim in Belgium
17-01-09, 05:56 PM
If running for less than an hour and a quarter I don't usually bother taking drink with me, my longer running used to be off road on the moors so I'd take a camel back with waterproof and some food too just in case (as well as being good training for the one adventure race I did).

When I was training for a marathon a few years ago I located various cafes, drink machines etc on my longer route, so all I had to do was take some cash with me and therefore no need to carry stuff.

Poo wise I had the turtle head before christmas, and have been in physical pain before just trying to keep one in. Not sure what the solution is, run in a nappy?

YESSSSSS! Today is a big day!

Just back in from my first half marathon distance. Did 13.2 miles or so in just over 2h (2h2m) so pretty much on target for my marathon pace of 4h. The plan was for a 12 miler this weekend but I thought sod it, another mile wont hurt. Next week I'll be doing 10 as a step back week (not including the weekday training runs at 4 miles each).

I think that works out at an average pace of 9m10sec miles or thereabouts.

The outward miles I had a strong wind in my face which didnt help but on the way back it was calm and sunny so I was dripping :-)

Great feeling though, thats another milestone in may training reached. Off to take the kids swimming now.

Later

p.s. On the turtle head training front I tend work around my meal pattern. If you are 'regular' like me then you'll know approximately when you would normally pay a visit. Ideally dont run at that time, or better still go straight after :-). Hovis, its amazing what a little research can throw up :-) I just found this you wrote some time ago....

i only ever have 1 poo a day, about 1 hour after i get out of bed....... so, depending if im working or not i will poo in work, but i often wait till i get to the gym on my day off, so i can save on my poo paper

...and strangely I bumped into that thread by searching for 'running socks'! How bizarre.

Could anyone recommend a decentish windproof running top that can be had for a resonable price off the net? I've had a look on wiggle and there's a few to choose from, can any one help me pick, or any to avoid?

I've a Paclite Goretex top made by Gore, but it's a bit overkill on dry cold sunny days, and although being goretex you still get a little clammy, so fancy something for cold crisp clear days.

oh, and why are my calfs hurting?......... when i say hurting, its only when i run, and it does not realy hurt, they just feel a bit tight?

Do you do any stretching before and after you run?

It is personal preference as to when you do it if at all, however it may help you Hovis.

There's some running really putting me to shame on here at the moment.....

Hovis - always squeeze on out before you go, even if you don't think you need one. Especially if doing a race, because the porta-loos at races are the worst places in the world - YOU CAN SMELL THE NERVES!!

I used to carry a bottle with me in a back pouch, along with my phone, my keys ad something to eat on longer runs, but find that I need less water now. Get one of these:

Once you are used to it it is comfortable.

I did the Les Witton 10 today and it was mentally hilly......IMO and a real tough one. I came home in 1:19:40 which I am quite pleased with. I had nothing left but recovery was quick so that's a good sign.

somebody mentioned running socks the other day. Any recommendations for long distance running?

i sell loads of x-socks and 1000 mile socks in the sports shop i work in. always had good feedback on them, though that's not to say there aren't better pairs out there. go to a proper sports shop and see what you can find (and be prepared to pay at least £8 a pair! (seems expensive, but they are worth it))

well done kev, you did far better than me today. i was lazy and got up too late and only had time for a single loop of my course i do, taking me 10 minutes.

The Hilly Twin skins, then the style depends on which you prefer, the socklets or ankle socklets.

I have the Hilly mono skins and tbh don't wear them. Much prefer the twin skins. I find them much more comfortable to wear and have not had any blisters from them. Hope this helps :).

Anklet Socks cover your ankle and Socklets are like trainer liners.

Just depends on your preference on the type of socks you like to wear.

MORE QUESTIONS, ADVICE and OPINIONS

how important is it to get shoes from a propper shop?
when i first joined the gym, i just got a pair of ½ price saucony off the internet, since then i have tried acis and mizuri, but was not keen on them, so stuck with suacony, always from the internet, but now im focusing just on running, should i visit a propper running shoe shop

building up distance?
i have only been running for over a week, and im running about 5 times a week, either 3 or 5 miles at the moment, eventuly i want to build up to ½ marathon distance, which looks frightening on google, i was thinking of just adding a mile on every 2-3 weeks ?

water or "specailist drinks"?
its my belief that the lucozade hydo and other simerler drinks are a bit of a scam, water is just as good, although i am only running for 1 hour max, at the moment

Not that important that you buy from a proper shop, but if you can get gait analysis done and some pairs recommended in one, then go home and search the internet for cheaper ones. Very important to get the right shoes for your style of gait.

Sounds fine mate - ideally you should be adding no more than 10% of mileage or time per week.

As a rule, if you add for 3 weeks on the forth week you should drop back a little and have an easier recovery week.

I always used to run with just a bottle of really week orange squash, which was perfect. When I used Lucozade in the marathon it dried my mouth up and made me feel a bit sick.

However I did used to use REGO recovery drink after a run.

Ultimately do what you feel is right and listen to your body, never run with knocks or cold etc, as you will find your recovery time will be longer.
