 your not a proper runner unless you spit lots.

Are you dressing adequately for the weather you are running in? You need make sure you are warm enough. I know you will get hot during your run, but you have to get there first. I always wear two thin long sleeved tops and a waterproof jacket. I also wear a hat until I am proper warm and also wear gloves.
But it's proper disgusting flem stuff:pukel:

I've got tight trousers and a long sleeve top. Both are clima365. I had a jacket on the first time I went out but I was too hot

I gave it a miss today :-( still coughing loads.

Maybe tomorrow. I really want to try out the new stuff I got for christmas: a fabby windproof running jacket and some lycra bottoms that come past my knees, only had short shorts up until now.

Good effort all, I've been slack and haven't run since Christmas Eve until this morning when I ran fixture 5 of the Kent Fitness League (cross country). Really boring course though and I had a rough night with my bad back and was thinking of pulling out right up until the start.

Hated the race, but managed a 38:02.....not unhappy with that! Back hurts like fook now though.

Foxy - You run doubles? I was thinking of starting that in the new year but can't work out the best way to do it without over doing it.

Not so good that you did it after a rough night with your bad back esp as it is hurting, however yes a good time considering how you felt .

Yes my first double in a while today *. When I do them, I run first thing in a morning between 5 and 7 miles. The next one, usually in the evening when working, about the same really but no less than 5 miles. A longer run, 12 miles or more on a Saturday morning.

You could do a longer one in the mornings and a shorter one in the evenings or vice versa and build up the distance. However, when you do start you could start stretching after your runs until you feel comfortable, unless you already do.

*I have been slacking lately though so this is my first day of proper training and I stretched off after my second run ;) :-D

Bad back is the reason I started running and probably the only thing that keeps me cracking out the miles.

It is probably the worst today that it has been since I started running and I have found I have lost some power in my leg.....f*cking NHS are no help on this one though and I have nowhere to turn.

What about Physio, will they be able to help? Do you do gym work too? If you have lost some power in your leg then maybe gym work might help with this to build the muscle and strength in your leg.

You would have to do the other leg too of course ;)

Sounds like nothing after reading what you guys have been up to, but I managed the whole way round tonight without stopping:D
I think I was trying to run too fast too soon. So tonight, after some advice from Foxyinrunninggear I started off jogging for the first wee bit to ease into it. The overall pace was slower too. But it felt better being able to do the whole thing without stopping, rather than start stop start stop.
So I'm just going to keep at it, and slowly increase the speed, then eventually the distance

Just couldn't sleep because of my back one night and trawled the internet for help and found one (only one) website saying do as much exercise as possible, so I did and it seemed to work. Two years later (to the day) and I have run a Marathon, a load of halfs and various other ridiculous races and distances.

But now theback is back and I don't know where to turn......

Moderation is key in my experience. I do suffer from a bad back, like most people my age :) I find that if I start my exercise by walking so as to warm up my body first and then try to bring my pace to a jog (not always possible on the first attempt/day) then I'd feel better afterwards. A warming down period is also advisable, not to stop immediately after a hard run, just a bit similar how we're supposed to apply the front brake really. Of course this all depends on the type and seriousness of your injury, but exercise does make sense as even in hospitals they encourage and sometime force ou to do it in the sake of recovery. The best type of exercise if you're injured is swimming. That's because your body is relieved from it's weight and so less stress is made on joints, spine etc. So if you're injured and have the facilities go swimming.

But now theback is back and I don't know where to turn......

I suffered from massive back pain years ago. I went to chiropractors. Spent tons of money for sessions with them. Went to the doctors who recommended me to the hospital. They then put me on a course of physio which I did for weeks. All the time my back getting worse and worse. I was on pain killers at the time. With the pain killers I could just about function and do the physio (albeit in a lot of pain). One day I went in for Physio without pain killers, I could barely walk. Only then did they send me for a scan to reveal a collapsed disk that was pushing into my sciatic nerve. I had the disk removed and a plastic one inserted along with bone grafts. All the chiropractic and physio was just making more pain. Maybe you should go back to the doctor and see if they can not send you to a back specialist? It has to be worth the fight. I suffered for years before even going to see anyone. And then I struggled with two mis-diagnosis. Back pain is the most common complaint and the hardest to diagnose correctly. The fact you are still in pain would indicate the cause has not yet been found. You could end up a cripple before your time. I would chase it and not give up.

You are certainly not wasting peoples time so don't let yourself think that. It is your back and you need to get it looked at. I would take Si's advice and go and get yourself checked out properly as there may be an underlying issue. In the meantime follow Zunkus advice with regards to moderation. Foxy

Stig
29-12-08, 01:40 PM
Something else that I have just remembered. A bloke at work also suffered from bad back pain. He too found it difficult if not impossible to get proper help for it. He actually went and paid the hospital himself for the scan and then produced the evidence to his doctor. No surprise he was immediately sent to the right person and his issues where resolved after back surgery. Now I can not remember when it was he went and did this but I do remember thinking it was not as expensive as I thought it would have been. It was around £160 I think. Cheltenham NHS Hospital have such a scanning machine that you can pay to have scans done. It's where he went and where I had my scan done.

Calves are really sore, but this is because I was attempting to run using the POSE method, not sure I can do that really. It was an interval session too so 6:24 pace for the fat bits which is TOO fast for a little fatty like me!

Foxy - What are your running goals?

Foxy - What are your running goals?

I set myself distances and times to do them in. Although the shorter runs I have been doing I haven't really timed. I might put myself down for the Bath Half Marathon which is in March. The run I did this morning was just under 1hr 30 and I didn't push myself just wanted to get round and save my energy for Bannerdown Hill, which is a mile and a half long hill about 8 miles into the run.

I have not heard of the POSE method, hmmmm might have to google that. 6:24 is fast though and for interval training over the mileage you did, awesome.

Foxy

Just read a little on the POSE method, it is more about technique, giving airtime than feet touching the ground. Landing on the ball of your foot as opposed to the heel.

Using this method, doing the 11.75 miles interval run, 6:24 pace on the sprints that is really impressive indeed. I believe the POSE method takes more out of you at first and once you have mastered the new technique you will become even faster!!!:D

krhall
31-12-08, 12:31 PM
Right did my last 6 miles of the year - Fetcheveryone tells me I have logged 712.19 miles this year.

That's 0.26 times Los Angeles To New York
or
0.17 times The River Nile
or
2.81 times The length of the London Underground
or
139272.61 times The whole nine yards
or
0.81 times The distance from Lands End to John O'Groats
or
9.69 times The length of Hadrian's Wall.

I think that is without races, so if I add them and some runs which I didn't log when I wasn't really using the site properly - I'm on 850 for the year.......and my legs can really feel it.

Enjoy your running and have a great new year!

Last run of the year completed. After some advice I decided to take a reality check on the knee situation.

I slowed my pace and went for longer distance. I did the 8 miles today. Just got back in and did it in an hour and ten. Happy with that. I have decided to go for distance and not worry about my times. I have to say at the end of the run I felt I could have easily ran much further.

I used to do a 4 mile circuit in my lunch breaks. I will start doing this again and use it for speed training.

There is a 10k race on the 11th Jan in Basingstoke. I have decided to enter. :D Don't care where I get or what time I get.

Si is very happy at the moment. I am just hoping my knee keeps together for me.

Nice one. I am going for another 8 miles tonight. Why are you so cold? Are you not trying hard enough?

After having had flu since 18 December and feeling better at last, I'm about to venture out. I haven't run for ages, was busy at work before all that, so will be interesting to see whether I can run at all, or manage 100m without coughing my guts up:rolleyes:

Now back - surprised myself big time, I did 6 miles:D and I only started coughing when I got home. It wasn't fast, 52 mins, but I didn't care, and I can honestly say that I enjoyed every step:D

 Nice one Ed. Doesn't it make you feel like you have been missing out when you get back into it?

I did another 8 miles this evening. I have to say the last two miles were a struggle. I felt like I plodded round the whole way. So when I checked the clock on getting back I was very surprised to find I actually did a better time than yesterday by 5 minutes.

My knee was giving me all the wrong signs toward the end of the run. I think its about time I listened. I was going to have a day of rest tomorrow and bash out a half marathon on Sat. I've decided against that and will now rest up until I do my lunch time 4 mile fast run on Monday.

Oh well.

what do you wear to run outside in this weather then?

i normaly only ever use the tredmill in winter, and then maybe run out side in the warmer weather, but it seems daft driving 8 miles just to run, although i do get to watch jeramy kylie

I wear a skin top. A t-shirt. A long sleeve sweat top, a fleece and then a waterproof. Shorts and track suit bottoms. Gloves.

I like to sweat.

Great news Ed. Time doesn't matter, it is the fact that you did it and enjoyed it that counts :D

I thought it was too good to be true. I drove the route and found I was just under half a mile short. So it makes it more like 9.30 - 9.45 miling. Ah well, I still enjoyed it hugely. Onwards and upwards.

Sorry to read about your knee Si. Rest up sounds good to me.

At least you are listening to your body Simon. Giving it time to rest and heal is not a bad thing you know. How were the blisters on your run this evening? Another 8 miles and bettering your time, is pretty darn good. Just make sure that you do rest so you can continue with your running. :D

After two days off I went out tonight and did the normal 1.5 miles, got home and caught my breathe, then did another mile. I think after a few more runs I'll try to do the whole thing in one go

What do you guys eat after a run? I'm always starving

So am I. Often a banana, anything that comes to hand though:D

You're doing really well. Keep at it! Before you know it you'll be doing 3, 4 miles - it's like everything else, getting started is the hard bit.

I eat anything I can get my hands on - when I'm at work that is normally a microwave rice with a pot noodle dumped on top of it!

I am never hungry straight after a run no matter how far I go , more thirsty than anything else.
