I am rubbish at running!! Could never run to save my life :)

Have now started though in the gym and can do the whole 2mins at roughly 7 level and then stop for another 2mins and then get going again.

But no more than 10mins in total of running lol

Any advise to get me a bit better is much welcomed

Running outside is a squillion times better than boring treadmills.

I started off running for a minute, then walking for a minute and repeating for about a mile and a half. Then I gradually did more running and less walking until I didn't need to do any walking at all. Then I started gradually building up the distance.

I appear to have developed a bit of Tendonitis in my foot. I've been doing between 2 and 3 miles since Xmas however hadn't ran for about a week and a half. A mate asked me to do a 4 miler with him so thought i'd go for it. I managed to do it in 35mins but about an hour afterwards, I developed a pain down the edge of my left foot and its still painful today. I think i'll have to rest it now and hope it disappears.

Anyone know why this might have happened?

Dunno mate, shoes, gait, weight, sods law? I'm off on the Eurostar tomorrow to do the Paris Half Marathon on Sunday. No hope of a decent time, getting round will be a miracle in itself. If I just get tendonitis after I'll count myself lucky. Best I'll get is an opportunity to run with some French ladies and down some Champagne after. Ooo la la.

Still hurting. As it is, I'm not fat but probably a stone over for an athletic weight. Trainers are fairly recent but done about 30 miles without any issues previously. Never had this problem before so wonder why its giving me such discomfort now. Its painful, causing me to limp a bit to ease pressure on the area.

Clocked 7.7km today, but again I´m not really running it is more this walk, run, walk, walk walk, jog thing right now.

I am still trying to train via my HRM and I think it is the most frustrating thing EVER. Im trying to keep the distance fairly consistent each time I´m out to get a rough idea of improvements.

Ah well, just got back from Paris, did the Paris half marathon despite nothing more than 2.5 miles at a time as "training". Did it in 1hr 45m which was OK considering. Can hardly walk now, just refuelling with a touch of Brandy.
A strange piece of mis organisation was that the organisers estimated that with 30,000 entarnts they would lay on approximately 40 porta loos. The race started in the woods of Bois de Vincennes (a wooded Park) and I can tell you any Bears in the wood would have have found it hard to find a place to have "**** in the woods" on Sunday morning. Pre race nerves seemed to play havoc with the French.

I'm not tough enough for this one I'm afraid. Everything's tougher up North apparently and running x country on the North Yorkshire coast, even in May, sounds like it's going to be cold, windy and bloomin hard work.

I have arthritis in my neck. WTF is all that about? I'm only 44 and pretty healthy considering. Seems my neck pain is in for the long term. Here endith any possible maintainable levels of fitness.

I can now consider myself over the hill, an old fart, a physical wreck. I can grow a nice big fat pot belly and say to people, "I used to be quite fit in my day".

Or I can say f'k that. Ignore the pain, swallow pain killers and go for a lovely long run this weekend and stick two fingers up at it all.

Which is what I am going to do.

Gutted. :(

I was supposed to be doing 20 miles at the weekend as my last long run before the Sussex marathon. But I gave up at 13.5 miles. Lazy.

Anyway, on Monday I was feeling enormously guilty about this so thought maybe I'd try doing 20 miles on Tuesday (yesterday) instead. I had to split it into 3 short runs due to time constraints. And I did it. One run before work, one at lunchtime and another after work.

I know it's not the same as doing it all in one go but I was pretty chuffed with myself :-)

I never really got into it but there were days I enjoyed it and loved it and always wanted to do more with it. Now I've been told no I really don't want to watch from the side lines - I want to go get my medals again!!
Think I'm going to dust off the old bike and hit the tow paths.
Swimming - I like this, not been for ages though it was swimming that kept me away from surgery on my back - 400 lengths a day I was doing.
The good thing with swimming is the health suite/jacuzzi that comes after it :-)

Sarah -i'm so envious - always fancied a half marathon. Its sounds like that the marathon is going to be yours- wish you all the luck in the world for it!!

Stig - THanks for the ideas I'm no good if someone tells me I can't. But I'll lurk quitely and revel in your sucesses!!

GOOD LUCK GUYS AND GALS!!

Was going to ask about this.

Did a half marathon no probs. Came back to running after a little while off and found I have a really painful right knee during running and after I stop it swells up and is stiff for a few days after.

Doc has prescribed Dyclofenac (sp?) but no difference. Also advised glucosamine (sp?) for joints. Also rubbish.

Any ideas or try physio?

This is turning into the not running thread. I'm crocked too and the pints are turning into pounds. Can't add any advice BaP but that medication has worked for me but you have to take the full course and with me it took a good few days to kick in.

I've had enough now. Tomorrow my running gear comes into work with me and I am going for a run. I've just checked Fetch. My last run was the 24th January. That isn't even funny. That's EIGHT weeks ago.

Stig

Good news and thats not slow. Whats up with your neck, trapped nerve or arthiritis?

Would you believe both.

A trapped nerve has caused the 8 weeks gap from running. Finally had an xray taken which didn't show anything regarding the trapped nerve but it did show up the arthritis. I'm falling apart at the young age of 44. :(

Still. Legs are a bit stiff today. But playing badmington this afternoon and swimming tonight with the kids. So that should loosen them up a bit ready for a run tomorrow.

With regards to my trapped nerve and the run. Well took a couple of Cocodomol before the run just in case. I didn't get any adverse pain from the trapped nerve (at least no more than I already had) and no additional pain today (apart from the normal pain it is causing). So I have decided I will continue with the running until something adverse happens. You never know, it might just be what is needed to sort out the problem. Doing nothing hasn't helped so may as well do something.

As for the time not being slow. It's slow for me. But thanks anyway. :)

The Idle Biker
23-03-11, 06:05 PM
Both?? Unlucky but might as well run through it. Somethings just take ages to get better or you just learn to lower expectations and get on with it.

I'm going to try and sign up for the Great South run tomorrow. My application for the Royal Parks Half Marathon got turned down in ballot and I need a running target to look forward to. Thinking about the half marathon at the Bacchus vineyard (I think it was that and involves drinking wine as well)

Not posted in here for a long time - I stopped running while the business was imploding, never had the time and rarely felt like it.

I started again in a low key way... and my knees are not what they were - now grinding, swollen and painful, esp when twisting the joint... doc thinks I've f*cked the cartilage in right knee, maybe same in left, going for an X ray to confirm. Meantime, doc has ordered me to stop.

I have a feeling that I will be retiring from running:(

Went for my first proper run since December! Loved it too! Last Sunday did a 10K run which I did in a pretty slow 56mins. That was with absolutely no training and was mainly to get me back in the exercise groove so happy enough. Have a half mara in 6 weeks so have to extract the digit and get some training in. I've battled against the pain and sometimes actually managed to convince myself I was enjoying parts of the run. But the truth is, on a 6 mile run, my feet give so much pain for the majority of it, the run just isn't fun any more. Add to that the pain I get from my knees for doing anything more than double figure miles in a single week. I can't convince myself any longer.

Still, ever the optimist. As soon as this trapped nerve in my neck has been sorted (10 weeks now ) I'll look at joining a gym and pumping some weights and things.

Yesterday I realised that after Sunday I've got no more races lined up :-(

I must rectify this situation :-)

I ran day before yesterday. Just can't keep away. 6 miles. Well it should have been, but being new to the area I got a bit losted and think I probably did nearer to 7 miles. Considering going out again tomorrow morning. I really do not know when to stop. Oh well.

My hand might have slipped and filled in a 5k application thingy :|

So 5 weeks to train I figure its enough time to actually be able to finish the whole thing at least jogging right?

Excellent :D

5 weeks is plenty of time. How far are you running normally at the moment?
