how important is it to get shoes from a propper shop?

I nearly talked myself into visiting a running shop and having my gait analysed on a machine. After much reading though I found that a) most shops have a basic treadmill and camera and no real medical knowledge of what they were looking at. b) the only real way of finding out properly was with a specialist and some serious equipment.

On the basis that the vast majority of people have a 'normal' running style and gait I didnt bother.

building up distance?
i have only been running for over a week, and im running about 5 times a week, either 3 or 5 miles at the moment, eventuly i want to build up to ½ marathon distance, which looks frightening on google, i was thinking of just adding a mile on every 2-3 weeks ?

I bought a good book from Hal Higdon, a runners world editor in the US, he also has a free website with detailed training programmes on it for beginners through to experts. He has run something like 400 marathons!

The basic programme consists of 16 weeks for a marathon programme and starts off pretty simple, which is nice :-)

You have important rest days, three short runs in the week and one long run every weekend. The long run works on the principle that you run at a certain distance for 2 weeks, then the third week is a 'step-back' week where you do not run as far. The fourth week you increase again. So, 10 miles, 10 miles, then 8 miles, then 11 miles, then 11 miles then 9 say. It seems to work quite well and gives you time to recover and push for the next longer distance.

water or "specailist drinks"?
its my belief that the lucozade hydo and other simerler drinks are a bit of a scam, water is just as good, although i am only running for 1 hour max, at the moment

My sister is a nutritionist and I asked her about this. There is real benefit to using the energy drinks but the effect is negligable at short distances or short exercise time.

The main benefit apparently is that they replace the sugars and minerals required by your muscles to efficiently use for energy. At longer distances as your body consumes these then it will turn to fat for its fuel which is less efficient and more difficult to convert to energy. In a marathon, when a runner gets close to depleting this glycose they become lethargic and it gets painful to use the muscles for a period of time. This is often called 'the wall'.

I used my energy drinks at shorter distance partly to get used to using them and also just to get used to carrying the bottle with me. Now my distances are getting longer ( around 2 hours running ) I can feel the difference in the latter stages. I found that it helps to drink one completely before I start running and then carry one along too.

i dont like running in tracksuit bottoms? i dont know why, i much prefere shorts, so hopfuly the tights will be ok.

I hate running in anything other than shorts, I have tried tights (skins & Reebok). Never really got on with them as they heated my legs up.

I use the skins now after a run as the compression helps with recovery.

I do own a pair of Ron Hill tracksters, which are marginally less ghey, but only use these in arctic weather, the rest of the time I run in a pair of Nike compression under shorts, for keeping the danglies in place and to stop my fat thighs rubbing, with a pair of 5" Adidas Shorts over.

Not tried suspenders yet........do they do them on wiggle?

I used to used SIS Go gels, and wash them down with the water.

Your body should carry enough glycogen to get you to 18 miles (The wall), so prior to that you should be consuming gels or food etc. to replace what you are using in order to not hit the wall.

Flymo is right - about 85% of the population have some form of over-pronation, so this could well be seen as normal - not to be confused with Neutral.

For both Neutral and Over-Pronation you will need a different type of shoe (or if you suppinate). Even a basic gait analysis from somewhere like Sweatshop, will explain it to a basic degree and show you how each shoe will help you. I genuinely think that it is worth doing.

There are some guides online as to telling which type of gait you have, try:

decided to go OUT 5 mins in i had a heavy shower for 1 min, then about a min of hailstones.

first 2½ miles seemed fairly quick, although as i was heading for a 2½ mile checkpoint then turning around and doing the same route backwards, i did feel like turning back before the marker, but i continued to get to it. as it was all down hill.

the 2nd half seemed a fair bit slower, as it was uphill and into the wind, and TBH i think i was thinking it was harder than it was.

5 miles in 47 mins (9min 40secs per mile) which is 10 seconds slower than saturday, but that was only 3 miles, and less hills

so im still faster on the road with a mixture of hills, than i am on the treadmill on the flat

the only problem, as it was wet, i stepped in a few puddles, so my feet got wet, and my toes are a bit sore

On a running forum they would say 'listen to your body' - well mine doesn't talk to me...

Think you got proper socks and proper running shoes. But you might be overdoing things mister scoobs. If you don't do a warm up - stretches and gentle exercise to warm up the muscles - then start off slow - I mean real slow, just so you don't suddenly put huge strain on muscles which aren't used to it. And if it persists, try running on softer surfaces - grass, trail, anything other than pavement or concrete. Don't ignore it, you'll end up hurting yourself.

Yeah, got the sock and shoes sorted and now not having any blister problems. I am running on the pavements generally. I was wondering if it was the camber which is stressing the muscles. It really is a **** area to run round near my house. To get somewhere decent I would have to drive out. The route is also quite up and down, so maybe it is too much for a beginerer.

Could be an adverse camber. Hills shouldn't cause the problem, just go rather slower and adjust your landing position - easier to run on forefoot up a hill.

That's why I stopped going to Shrewsbury AC. After I broke my pelvis, I wasn't as fast for a while and they wouldn't wait for me - I was always left behind unless I did speedwork all the way. Complaints fell on deaf ears so I jacked.

Did 6.8 miles in 50.35 tonight, started off as a base mileage run but it turned into a tempo. Felt much better than last week as I could breathe properly without getting bunged up. Met 5 other runners, all women, knew one, 4 apparent new runners, all doing a grand job.

Well just went for a quickish run, well quicker than my weekend slog of being lost in the dunes. Measured it on google maps and it 3.83 miles taking just over half an hour, with an average speed of 12.05 km/h or 7.5 mph. According to the HRM it was an Avg HR172, Max HR 189, 499 Cals, not quite sure if those numbers are good/bad/indifferent, but probably ok for a shorter run?

the cardio kickboxing is hard work, im not sure on contact kickboxing,

i guess your doing the mile in -10mins, (man, you get bored easy;)) try listening to music.

i would say you need to do more distance, if you speed up a bit and get the mile done in say 8 mins, thats only 8mins exercise, and not realy going to help that much.

my first 5k race

im not sure if it can be classed as a "race" but it was all very professamaly run, with timmers and laptops etc

first of all, mother manages to lose my 3 day old hilly running socks? there were on the table on thursday, ready for today, i looked everywhere,
so, i jump in the car and it -0.5 although it did not feel that cold, so i get to tescos car park (as the start is just around the corner, and yup, its poo time. anywho i get to the start in plenty of time.

i started off about half way in the pack, and straight away got overtook by about 10 people, one of which can only be discribed as an OAP,

anyway, i get into a nice rythem, and notice errrrr a "fit bird" in front of me, with a pair of skintight almost see through tights......... which was nice, so i stayed behind her enjoying the veiw.

at 3k i had enough of the veiw, upped the pace a bit, so i overtook her

at 4k i was discusted to be overtaken by a woman*

im waiting for the results to be put online, but i realy enjoyed it

got back and mother has still not found my socks

* the woman that overtook me was pushing a double buggy, with 2 young-uns in it,

at 3k i had enough of the veiw, upped the pace a bit, so i overtook her

at 4k i was discusted to be overtaken by a woman*

im waiting for the results to be put online, but i realy enjoyed it

* the woman that overtook me was pushing a double buggy, with 2 young-uns in it,

Hovis, you have to blog your running stories (on www.fetcheveryone.com (http://www.fetcheveryone.com)). They are brilliant.

my first 5k race

im not sure if it can be classed as a "race" but it was all very professamaly run, with timmers and laptops etc

first of all, mother manages to lose my 3 day old hilly running socks? there were on the table on thursday, ready for today, i looked everywhere,
so, i jump in the car and it -0.5 although it did not feel that cold, so i get to tescos car park (as the start is just around the corner, and yup, its poo time. anywho i get to the start in plenty of time.

is it cardio kickboxing, or propper 1 on 1 kickboxing?
the cardio kickboxing is hard work, im not sure on contact kickboxing,

It's non contact, I think they get the newbies up to some sort of standard before they start hitting each other. I'm just going to add 500m each run before my first lesson then reassess afterwards.

Why don't you also try incorporating fartlekking into your training. I think krhall might be better at explaining it than me though :).

I hope you stretched off afterwards, you might pay for it later, you know tight calf muscles, shin splints etc.. ;)

Nearest one is the one you attend, which is a little too far to go each weekend to run 5kms:rolleyes:. Shame though as it looks like a lotta fun Hovis.

10 mile run this morning, a little faster than I've done previously. Not by much though but enough. Its my step back week so should be doing either another half marathon or a 14 miler next weekend.

On track for a 3h 56m marathon, right on target.

I really am enjoying it yes, now that its become a habit I look forward to getting out and running. The scenery is pretty cool along my run so that helps.

My knees are getting a bit sore though after a long run, it settles after a few hours but can hurt towards the end of a long run. Maybe I'm getting old :-(

I didn't run today as I could feel my knees slightly (don't know why?) and felt like a cough was coming on, if all is fine I'll head out Tuesday evening. On the plus side it meant I could wnader down to Zandvoort to watch a little drifting, and could continue prepping my track wheels for the cage.

I didn't run this weekend, either. Went on the Ashbourne ride yesterday, and ferried wife & daughter to Manchester today.

7m10s miling. Wow:cyclopsani:

And this time I know it was 4 miles. :D I ran to my limit. I would not have been able to sustain that pace for any further distance. But that is what I have decided to do with my two 4 mile runs at work. I have decided to race them. Mid week evening run at home will be a 6 or 8 mile run at a medium pace. Weekend run will be a slow slog until I am up to half marathon distances.

Awesome time Si :D. At least now you have set yourself goals with running and doing what works for you and more importantly giving your knees a break inbetween ;)
