i had a nice 6 mile run planned for today, but its bitterly cold out, plus we had a light coating of snow, so the pavments may be slippy

back to the treadmill (which i have not used for over 2 weeks now)

I'm just back in from a six miler around the local resevoir. Lots of snow an ice, plus, the road in our estate is now compacted snow and is ACE for sliding on!

Giggling like a kid as I was sliding along as fast as the cars dare drive!

ok, completed my 14 mile run at the weekend but I have a problem now with my knees :-(

I take it pretty seriously so dont want to just run through it and ignore it. its important to me to be able to complete the marathon in April, not just start it!

Had a bit of conversation with my local GP and eventually got Bupa involved as I'm a a member through work. Got to see a Physio the same day which is pretty impressive!

So, a I have an extensive stretch routine to 'loosen' my legs, apparently they are solid for running, but tight at the moment leading to stress on my knees. Nothing wrong with any muscles or ligaments though which is good news.

5 stretch routines, 6 reps on each leg six times a day! Blimey, there'll be no time to do any work. In the meantime I think I'll replace my long run with swimming and mountain biking for a few weeks while it takes effect.

that's a real bummer for you. how long have you had your current shoes? if you're marathon training they may well be knackered already!

So far I've been given a stretch routine as I mentioned, and obviously to avoid the very long distance runs for the time being until I get sorted.

Short distance 4 or 5 mile runs are fine. I'm planning to supplement that with low impact bike riding and swimming in the meantime.

The shoes appear fine, they are relatively new but not sure if they suit my own running style perfectly. Just been into the local running shop (I didnt even know they were there) and plan to return tomorrow with my running shoes for them to take a look at.

I'm using Asics Kayano Gel 14 shoes at the moment, loads of cushioning and comfort. The lady in the shop said she would have advised me to use these for marathon running too, unless I'm one of the smaller percentage of people that dont suit them. Will hopefully find out tomorrow.

In case I need to change, anybody interested in a couple of pairs of these, hardly used, perfect condition, only a few months old?

Do they have gait analysis in the shop? A running machine and video to record your gait?

I think so yes, the shop seems to have a good reputation too as both my physio and a marathon running friend both recommended the same place.

Flymo - kayano's are great shoes and perfect for marathon training, but they are for over pronators, so if you are not they won't be helping you.

One bit of advice I have is don't panic, you still have plenty of time to get over an injury, so perhaps a rest might be what is required here and a sports massage to loosen you legs up a bit. I ran when injured during marathon training, as I was worried about not putting enough mileage in and eventually had to have total rest for a couple of weeks, which made me panic more.

You are putting more mileage through your legs each week than they are used to so, will be getting more and more tired and need a little bit longer to repair. Each week you are increasing your mileage bit by bit, so the muscles are becoming more fatigued.

During the latter stages of my training I did some of my long runs round a resevoir, it was basically a grassy, mainly flat bank of just under a mile. This helped reduce the impact on my knees massively, but on a 20 miler was really boring!!!

Take it easy.

I just did 6.11 miles as the sun was starting to set and it is probably one of the hardest runs I have ever done.

I needed to go to the bank so on with the trail shoes and off I went.....very icy most places and still deep snow in others, felt like a right work out though especially trying to run up icy hills......needed it though as I haven't run since friday night.

Felt a bit like running through a postcard though, low winter sun, no clouds and thick white slow everywhere.

My ankles and knees are a bit sore now though. Ice and packed snow uneven underfoot probably the cause though.

Thanks, I'm not in a panic so thats not a problem. I've just taken the pain in my knees seriously enough to make sure I get some good advice and work on it properly. I'm not daft enough to consider the marathon a walk in the park, its something to respect and train for.

I've taken a good look at my trainers (2 pairs) and the wear pattern appears to be pretty balanced at the front. Its certainly not all down one side at all. I'll be taking them back into the running shop for some further advice tomorrow but from what I can see they are fine for me. They show wear to the outer heel and then a balanced, almost central, wear pattern as I toe off at the front.

One thing though, I was wondering about training on softer surfaces and the effect that might have on my marathon. The London marathon is all on road surface isnt it? Is it still acceptable to then train on softer surfaces (sand/grass) and still provide value in preparation for London?

My coastal route allows me to vary between road/pavement/sandy but firm beach/grass tracks along the way.

Thanks for the advice so far, it is helpful.

Stig

Have you run in the orthotics yet?

No not yet. I was told to wear them for a week before doing so. I will leave it until next week and then give it a go on a small run.

krhall
04-02-09, 09:31 AM
Flymo - For me it came down to either running on softer stuff or not running at all, so whilst it isn't perfect preperation for the marathon, I was still banging in the mileage. My longest run was 20 miles (3 Hours exactly).

I also find that running on tarmac is much better than pavement ans it is normally more even and slightly lower impact.

I just ran to work - the most direct route 9.5 miles, but up two massive hills......it was so cold I could feel my chest getting tight and breathing was difficult, but I was running past cars the whole way to work. Took a while though 1:18, but at times I looked like I was doing 'the running man' dance on the spot due to the ice!

had the all clear from the running shop, they looked at the soles of my trainers and said no problem. The wear pattern at the toe is totally neutral so can rule that out as a problem.

Carry on with my stretch routines this week and back to the physio on Friday night.

I think this is a combination of not taking enough time to stretch out before and after a run. I was stretching but nowhere near as much as the physio has suggested.....and just being relatively new to running (4 months) for long distances.

Well yesterday's short run in the snow/slush was a (very) marginal new PB, increased my average speed by 0.02 mph to 7.52 mph, and ran it at a lower average heart rate, not bad considering I've not been out for two weeks.

5 miles tomorrow outside

Just been out to do my short route. Firstly it's been a rather hedonistic weekend, lots of booze Friday night, a leg injury sustained in the early hours of Saturday morning by half falling out of a dutch girl's cabin bed, some motorcycle purchasing followed by more booze throughout Saturday afternoon whilst watching the Rugby. So I decided some punishment of the physical kind was in order.

Went out and ran as fast as I could, felt sick going up the dune on the route and took a while to recover.

So I beat my PB, down to 29:01, 12.73 km/hr average (7.92 mph) and 7 min 34s miles. I know I was pushing hard as my average HR was high at 178 and a max of 195. I think I've got a way to go, perhaps with less booze, more sleep and some more training a 7 minute mile average may be possible.

Excuse me whilst I pass out (I came back and did 3 sets of push ups which were pretty dismal). :D

Right, seems I might need to change running shoe. Spent some time in 'Up and Running' in Liverpool on their gait analysis and although they are not far wrong, the Asics Kayano 14s I have dont suit me 100%.

Seems like a toss up between the GT2140 or the New Balance 769s. I have an appointment with my physio tomorrow to examine the video comparisons (the shop was kind enough to let me take the vids away on USB key!).

Anyone want to but my new Mizuno Wave Nirvan 4's off me? They retail at £94.99, I got them for £55 including postage, but after 16 miles I can't get on with them.

They are Mizuno's flagship shoe and you can't find them on t'internet for less than £69.99 for last seasons colour.

They are a UK 9.5, I'm going back to Kayano's!

You can have them for £45 + P&P

I'm thinking I might have to start looking at morning runs. Not sure how my body will react to the altered sleep pattern. I'll be fine getting up for the run, but worried that I'd pay for it over the following days.

I find it knackers me out for the day. I would have to get up way too early to fit a run in before going to work. Tried it and was just too tired in the evenings.

Well I haven't frequented this thread for a while, but I thought I would post a short update.

Last time I posted on here I was getting a little concerned as everytime I went out I was getting shin and calf pain. Really píssing me off because I'd spent a fair bit on some decent trainers as well as going to a decent shop for gait analysis blah, blah, blah.

Anyhow I persevered. Slowed my pace down a bit and the pain went. Looks like I was trying to do too much too soon. I started off with 2 minute runs and 2 minute walks but was trying to run too fast on the run phase hence the pain.

To cut a long story short I am now on 45 - 50 minutes of continous running (more precisely fast walking). I'm doing about 9.5 minute miles. Still not fast but that will come. I'm really pleased with my progress. Managing 3 times a week, which is plenty for me. Rest days are needed so I feel refreshed and ready for the run days. Really look forward to my runs now and always feel good after the shower.

Excellent stuff Scoobs. People under estimate the power of rest days.

What a few weeks I've had!

Been working with the physio and running shops to work out what was causign my knee pain. I've now switched trainers to Asics GT2140s, drastically changed my stretching routine and been working on a rehabilitation routine to get my left knee back as strong as it needs to be.

The results are amazing although I am gradually working on increasing the miles again. Three weeks ago I stopped with a jolting pain at 7 miles into a 14 mile run. Had to walk the best part of 7 miles home :-(. A week after that I struggled to break 2.5 miles with the same problem. After the past few weeks of stretching routines, swimming and new shoes I am back able to run beyond 8 miles without a hint of pain (other than the satisfying dull ache that a long run gives you).

I've found that without really trying, my strides are lengthening and I am able to run faster with no additional effort. I'm not trying for record breaking times dont forget but a consistent pace of just over 9 minutes/mile for a marathon distance.

Easy does it but it seems like I am totally back on track with a large dose of experience in my pocket. Stretch....stretch....stretch.....then stretch some more :-)

I'll post back here with some more detail covering the stretch routines that work for me when I finish work but most of it isnt new. You may well have already done some of this stuff or at least read about it elsewhere.

I think the main thing that has changed for me is my attitude to the importance of stretching both before and after the run itself. Before I suppose I tended to rattle through it because I knew I should do it rather than treating it as part of the exercise itself.

Now I tend to take my time and make sure it gets done properly and with purpose, it actually helps with performance as well as avoid injury. Being properly stretched out before running lets me use the full strength and range of movement that otherwise I would not be benefitting from.

In addition to the before and after stretching I have taken to doing a 10 minute stretch routine at various times throughout the day, maybe 5 or 6 times. This has really helped, I can feel the difference in that I am nowhere near as tensed up when I run. In my job I tend to spend a lot of time sitting down at a desk so this is helping me to exercise my body through the day.
