What sort of time you looking at Sarah?
I'm not really worried about time. I just want to get dirty :-)
I meant to do hell up north this year but left it far too late too get in, going to work out an action plan for next year though, get a few halfs in and whatever else I fancy, been a pretty busy last twelve months tbh hence my erratic appearances on here these days, only 38 miles left to do to crack my 500 miles in 2010 on Fetch as well, better get me trainers on then ;)

Looks like some fair old running has been going on here! Some long distances too.
What are the hell events all about? Distance/mud content & any obstacles a la Tough Guy?

They're just silly cross-country races. Lots of lovely mud, hills, sand and a fair amount of water :-D
Edit: And a lot of fun.
Nothing nearly as mental as tough guy.

10km race for me tomorrow. First time I've done a mid length competitive run. Pacing is going to be interesting.......

Hmmm. I wish I hadn't watched it. How many days have I got to change my mind?
None is the answer, not when the entrance fee is non refundable. lol

10km went well, 44:44, so 13.41 km/h average :)
Loads quicker than any of my training runs, sprint(ish) finish on the track meant my max HR was the highest I've seen in 3 years!
Looking forward to next weekend's 16km, I think it'll have to be at a slightly slower pace.
Having been ill all last week and still with a troublesome chest, I have done no running at all. Unlikely to be doing any running for the next few days either, but will be taking my running gear into work just in case.

At night I've been wearing a long sleeved thernmal top, running tights things, a sort of track suit top, thin running gloves and a hat. Sometimes the gloves and/or hat have to come off.
The biggest issues are slippery surfaces and getting snowflakes in the eye!
Somebody recommend me a pair of trail running trainers. I've bought a pair of these (http://www.spartoo.co.uk/Salomon_XA_PRO_3D_ULTRA_GORE-TEX_reg-x50055.php?track_id=spz&sx=H) but they have proved to be useless for running. So I now have a pair of rather expensive (but waterproof) trainers for casual wear. Need a good pair of trail running trainers for the hellrunner I am doing in February.
... These any help ... http://www.yaktrax.co.uk/
.. sorry Si that was for Tim, you posted too quick ;)
I love running in adverse conditions. The colder and wetter the better. :)
Going out for a run tonight. Hopefully it'll be blowing a blizzard when I go out.

Innov8 are a good make, loads of options on their website, and a good talk through their range.
I've used my innov8 Flyrocs a lot on the edges of the North York Moors, and on tracks, trails and fine on the road. Not too high on the heel so pretty secure.
As for the Yaktrax, I'll give them a miss for now!

Did a 6 mile run this evening. 3 times up a steep hill. Nice and cold with a sprinkling of snow on the ground. Forecast is for plenty of snow this weekend so will try to get a couple of runs in. Probably along the canal. :)

Personally I wouldn't bother with Goretex versions for running, only walking, I'd save a few quid as when off road some water is bound to seep in over the top, I'd prefer it out quickly.
But Innov8 are great from what I've experienced

So is everyone still getting out despite the weather ?

Ha, ha - the weather has nothing to do with me not getting out.
Thats the CBAs and the actually pulling handfulls of hair out due to work.
To think, this time last year I was doing 90 miles a month in this weather - fond memories of the sweat freezing in my hair.

10 mile race was cancelled due to snow on Sunday, but got out for a 13km run myself. Harder work in the snow.

I've put in 230+ kms in 7 weeks, I'll sign up on Fetch in the new year I think.
Nah weather doesn't put me off getting out there. Going out tonight when Foxy gets back from work.
Congratulation Stew on achieving your target. I set the same target last year and reached it. This year set the same target and not made much more than half that. Knees won't allow me to do those sort of miles anymore.
Had a brilliant run at lunchtime today. Loved it :-D
Up a hill, through some woods and a lovely misty view of the sea with bits of sun sneaking through.
Did a run this evening myself. Struggled toward the end of it but enjoyed it. 8.24 miles in 1hr 10 minutes. Climbed 1200 feet over that distance. :)
Another hilly, muddy lunchtime run today :-D

Sussex hills aren't the same as Yorkshire hills. I doubt I could cope with proper northern hills!
I miss the hill Lisa and I used to run up where we used to live. Bannerdown. It's well over a mile long and very steep. Used to do about six miles which would take us to the bottom of it. :)

Had a bit of hungover run Christmas day, but it was nice to get out and clear some room for the turkey.
Now up in Scotland, slushy running on the roads and verges this morning.
Not been out again yet. Probably won't get out until the New Year now. Taking the kids back to their mum tomorrow and the day after that a 250 mile trip to help my mum move house. That'll be another two days.

What times are people running 2 miles in, nowadays on the .org?
Also, anybody here a rower?
Going by my last run I would have completed two miles in 16 minutes. Saying that, had I been only going for a 2 mile run I would have run it quicker. My average pace per mile tends to be between 7.30 and 8 minute miles but I always encorporte hills in my run if I can. I've not run a flat run for quite some time.

I haven't done any 2 mile runs, all of mine are a bit longer.
As for rowing, I did 1 term of it at Uni and then gave up. Student lifestyle + early mornings was not fun!

Yeah of course. It's just, a lap of the lake I run around is 2 miles, I was wondering where people would fall in terms of lap times. I hate running though, it's so boring.. and cold nowadays..

Same as I just wrote above to you too. Agreed about the rowing, I have no time because of basketball, but I don't envy my friends whom are on the water by 6am twice a week. At one point they were there in -13 degrees apparently. Imagine catching a crab at that temperature....
I ran a lap of the lake in about 13 mins 40, but I stopped twice to walk to chill and catch my breath. I don't have much stamina to use up at once. I can't run for long non-stop, but if I run, then walk for a bit, then run etcetera I could go forever. I'm out of shape now but I'm not extremely better during sports season, where I do 4-6 hardcore hours of basketball and 2 hours of strength and conditioning per week. Maybe I was just not destined to run..
Cheers guys, I'll see if my time improves ever so slightly, ever. What distances are you both running on average in total, and how far can you run in one stint without slowing/walking?
Tim in Belgium
28-12-10, 10:38 PM
Currently run between 5-13km depending on the training session, I find I can almost run forever if I pace myself correctly, although tiredness/energy end up being limiting. I did a marathon last April then stopped running until starting again in October. It's best not to go too far too soon as even if you can physically/mentally/energy wise do it when you get tired you may run with poor from and cause yourself niggles or injuries. It's best to build up slowly, and once you can run a little further do some shorter runs, and only the odd long run. Training can be a bit of a minefield though and I'm no expert.......
Im dead slow these days but on a good run Im knocking on the 9 min mile pace, hoping to get well under that next though, hope you all had a good crimbo btw :D

12km before a late breakfast, the first 6kms hill repeats (not steep) and then another 6km, hilly as I'm currently visiting my mum in the Scottish borders!
thats me done for running this year, covered over 1100miles, should be above 800 in the fetch league, so happy with that. Next years target 1500miles. first race of the year Cardiff ultra in May.
Best of luck to every one in 2011
Good going Ian, I just cracked the 500 mile target I set myself, think I'm round about page 123 ish, tbh I'm happy with that but going for 750 next year, happy new year to all, hope you all stay injury free in 2011 :)
Going for my last run of the year a little later on. Looking forward to 2011. Especially the hellrunner in February. Think I might start doing those sort of runs rather than road running.
Congratulations to those who set targets and achieved them. Me personally, I'm just happy I am still able to run at all. :)
I don't have any targets distance wise. I have learnt the hard way my distance running is at an end. I will just be happy to be able to keep going out there and keep my minute mile pace below 8 minutes.
Good luck to everyone for 2011. :)
Just completed my last run of the year. :)
Happy New Year to all running thread people :-D

Anyone got any experiance on waterproofing iPhones? I used to use endomondo to track my runs on my old phone, which I didn't really care about getting wet, but since I swapped to iPhone I haven't really been running outside.
I want to start tracking again but, knowing that they easily invalidate the apple warrenty if there's even one 'wet dot' showing as red, I'm a little nervous about taking it out with me.
I do keep the phone in an arm wallet, but it's not waterproof (mainly due to the opening for the headphones) so wouldn't protect if I got caught in a downpour, or when I pour water on my head, or against the sweat.
Any suggestions?
No help from me Tommy, sorry.
Was going out for a run today but it didn't happen. Going tomorrow though without fail.
Did 9.8km earlier and am a bit ashamed of my time so wont post it.

Hey your time is what ever you did it in. When I started running again after my broken pelvis told me I could, I couldn't even manage to run all the way round a three mile loop. My time was awesomely spectacularly SLOW. We all have to start somewhere. :)

I hadnt planned on it, but I'll have a serious think about that over the next few days. Dont think I can break any records in that space of time but it would be a nice target to aim for.
I hadn't run for the whole of december, but just pushed my sorry ass out of the door!

I hope they are not rip offs. There tends to be quite a lot of fake stuff on eBay and I've been caught out myself buying trainers. They look as though they are real enough but were in fact a pile of poop that fell to bits very quickly and didn't fit well at all.
I've got flat feet too. I am suffering really badly with my feet at the moment and just can't find any trainer that doesn't give me foot pain. :(
Oh and Sarah,
Looks like I won't be able to do the Hellrunner now. The ex has decided to be a ***** again and now told me after I booked the place she is no longer prepared to swap the weekend I have the kids. So that'll be £60 odd quid down the drain. :(

Training for the Hellrunner is really not going well. Not been out for a run for over a week. I may just drag my rear end out the door for a longish run today.

I'm working on a solution Sarah. I should be doing this afterall. The issue is because the carpark is over a km away from the start/finish point. I do believe I will have someone who is able to look after them for the couple of hours we will be running. It just means an early start for them.

Not been myself in over a week. However, just got back in from a 12 mile run. :-) Climbed over a thousand feet along the route. 1hr 40 min slog and struggled to get home. Feel good for it though. Well apart from the incredible pain in my feet, but that seems to be par for the course with my running at the moment.
Hello running people. I have never done any running before. I am pretty unhealthy a bit overweight and quite lazy.
I really enjoy walking but never enjoyed running, hated having to do cross country at school.

I am looking at getting a GPS data logger for Kate, as she has taken up jogging, in preparation for the Plymouth half-marathon.
It doesn't need all the bells and whistles, mainly as I can't afford them!
I wouldn't mind being able to put it under the seat on the bike for Sunday hoons or track days either.
Needs to log speed, distance and time. Calories and lap/split would be good too but not essential.
So, give me some recommendations please.
Regards
Phil
Garmin forerunner 110. It's the basic one which will record mileage and pace. It also has the generic functions you find on most digital watches such as lap times and such. But it's around £170 so not sure if this is going to be too expensive for your needs.
Phil, I got a garmin 305 foreunner with heart rate monitor for £125 from amazon, good bit of kit if a little bulky, can swap functions so it can used for either running or cycling

Theres load of info out there but my advice would be
1, spend a few quid on a decent set of trainers and find a good running shop that will put you on a treadmill to analyze your running gait and find you shoes to suit your running style
2, dont overtain and get injured, take it easy at first and dont be afraid to run/walk on as many runs as you need to
3,have a look here http://www.fetcheveryone.com/ theres bag of info in there
4, enjoy it :)
Yeah. Most important bit is don't over do it. You can't run if your injured and you won't run if it hurts too much.
When you start, give enough time between runs to recover. If it takes 2 or 3 days before your muscles have recovered, then wait for that long. The longer you run for the quicker your muscles will recover. (and your lungs ;-))
Edit: When I say longer you run for, I mean the longer you keep up with the running, not running further distances.

I used a Hal Higdon schedule for my marathon last year. There's a half mara version too:
http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm
But it assumes that you can run 3 miles already, so you might need to do a more basic training plan first.
Good luck!

I have Sarah. I tried the front foot plant rather than the heel strike. It's wierd and basically I don't like it. But yesterday on my run, I tried it a bit to save my heel from more pain. I ended up doing a whole foot plant rather than an edge. But that just gave me shin splints. Think I'll just chop my feet off and try a new pair.
Might sound a stupid comment but have you had your gait analyzed ? you may need orthotics or something. Its no fun doing something you enjoy and being in pain afterwards
Might sound a stupid comment but have you had your gait analyzed ? you may need orthotics or something. Its no fun doing something you enjoy and being in pain afterwards
I have been through all that. Started with bad knee pain while running. Eventually ended up at the hospital on strict physio, orthotics. Nothing has helped. In the end I decided so long as I cut down the mileage, I could still get away with the running. But then started getting pains in my feet as well. Thought it was the trainers which needed replacing. Changed them for a new type with the same issues. I now have a third pair of trainers and still have the same issues with my feet.
So I find myself here now knowing I have to cut the amount I run in order to being able to run. But I also know that each time I go out for a run, I have to endure near unbearable pain in my feet. Sort of takes the fun out of it really.
I have been thinking about going back through the whole sorry process with the doctors as my first point of call to see if there is anything that can be done. I'll get the Hellrunner race out the way next month and then probably go ahead with trying to get this issue resolved once and for all. May as well see if I can get the metal work taken out of my collarbone whilst I'm at it. I foresee another few months of not being able to run again. :(
Tbh I would have been suprised if you had'nt gone through all that already, well I hope it can be sorted for you matey
