Sarah.. not really sure on the distanceīs Im running/walking as my gps on phone never seems to track properly. I think it is between 2 and 3 miles each time I am out right now. I am now managing to run continually for one mile so I hope to be able to increase that over the 5 weeks?

sarah

omg, that was the hardest thing i've ever done. i ran out of energy by about mile 7:-(

I finished the stupid thing though :-)

might have a rest next weekend...

Been looking at theses events for a while now, http://www.mightcontainnuts.com/store/index.php?main_page=page&id=16 (http://www.mightcontainnuts.com/store/index.php?main_page=page&id=16). The 30m in October sounds good, plus its on my door step.
the other plan is to run the entire length of the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal (about 35miles).
This month hope to beat my "most miles in a month record" (186M) So the canal run could be sooner rather than later.

I've been doing 6 miles a day for a while and it's getting effin' boring. Already listen to music and stop to do press-ups and sit-ups etc.

What can I do, agony aunts?

stewie
14-04-11, 11:54 AM
I do the same routes and it defo gets boring so I often go for run on the way home from work in the morning, I do the same rough distance but a change of scenery/ terrain etc makes a nice change, doesnt always work tbh sometimes you just gotta put your head down and go for it, just don't get lost like I once did up in the lakes. I parked my truck up in a layby outside muncaster castle in cumbria and went for a nice easy 30 min bimble, 2 hrs later I finally got back to my wagon, my boss was well impressed...............................;)

The trick i find is to stay motivated. There are many ways of doing this, the best i find is to make use of some of the online running sites out there (try http://www.fetcheveryone.com/ or the Nike + site)
Failing that enter a race.
best of luck

I fancy doing a half marathon or less. Anybody know of one very soon around Swindon?

I think of girls cheering me on, that makes me run faster and longer. Or looking at myself in a mirror on a treadmill. And if theres a pretty lady running I try and impress her by not stopping and overtaking her, but then when I'm around the corner I collapse

I remember reading when you first started Sarah; I thought at the time that I really should give it a go so I blame you entirely ;)

I managed to run 1 mile and then run jog the rest up to 5k today so I know that I will be able to at least finish the 5k, even if it is just jog walking it. Although I’m sure 15 minute miles is no record time!!

I'm still here. Still running although it has been a struggle. After not running for the best part of 4 months, I've slowly been getting back to it. I really shouldn't but just can't not run.

Did a couple of 6 mile runs over the past few days. Went out this morning nice and early. After drinking the best part of a half bottle of rum and a few Baileys last night, wasn't exactly expecting a good time, but did well enough.

Lisa went out this morning as well with the aupair. It was supposed to be a nice gentle little jog to ease Vanda into proper running. They came back in after a 5.1 mile run. Vanda looked suitably knackered. :-)

Yesterday evening's run was ablast after moving into my new short term pad in Reading, a 13km out and back along the Kennet tow path, on the back I kept catching a group of cyclists as they went through cycle-stile things, a big buzz that pushed my pace up, easily under the hour and my 2nd quickest run ever to date :)

Fry ups? Bottles of Rum and Pimms, I don't think you're taking Running seriously enough Gentlemen!

Me, I got referred to a NHS physio after I went to the Drs about my achilles tendon issues. So after many, many years of injections, operations and physio they are still crocked. But I got referred to the NHS Physio by the Dr and I thought, fair enough, take the treatment and maybe I can get another Summer of running out of them.

I turn and up and get shown into the Consultation room. Physio asks me all the usual questions and then she says, "have you tried stretching them?" - Yes I say "oh" she says, "have you tried putting ice on them" - Yes I say. "oh and have you tried massaging them" - Yes I say.

"mmmm? and have you had physio before? Yes I say and operations and injections.

She says, "and have you always followed the physios advice to the letter when you have had physio before".

Well I said maybe not to the letter but pretty much. " Well" she says " Thats the problem, heres a leaflet and a sheet explaining what you should have done, now go and do the exercises properly".

You what? I say, don't I get any physio?
" No" she says " This is just the initial Triage consultation service and you only get 10 minutes consultion, we'll be in contact for your appointment for Physio which will be in about 8 weeks, but we'll call you first to see if it has cleared up - Bye Bye"

Oh? Bye Bye I say, thanks for your help I say, have a nice weekend.

I HAVE JUST BEEN MUGGED BY THE NHS.

Everyones doing better than me.

However, anyone ever started out for a run that they really couldn't be arsed with. Started slowly, even grumpily then slowly got into it and then gradually started to enjoy it, and then realised despite the fact that you've got injuries, they weren't playing up and then by the end of it had really done well?

Happened to me tonight, nothing spectacular just a nice 4 miles to Waterloo. Doesn't happen to me often mind you.

Don't post in this thread much - but its a great read to motivate me off the couch and into my runners!! I've a half marathon coming up on Sunday and my primary goal is to get to the finish line! If I can get my time close to 2 hours I'll be delighted. Last year I did it in 2:15 or so but to be honest I was probably in better shape 12 months ago. I'll post up how things went after Sunday - hopefully it'll be good news! ;)

Good luck for Sunday, I'm doing a half myself up in Yorkshire (Ravenscar half marathion).

As for often starting runs badly, I often find with my short fast runs it takes 2-3 km to get up to speed and into a nice rhythm, the other week I did the return leg so fast after a slow astart I almost beat my PB.

Stig

I'm still running. Each time I stop due to all the issues I have with knees, feet, trapped nerves etc... I still find myself going back into it. I run three times a week. Mostly 5-6 mile runs but once a week a like to stretch a little further. Also running with weighted gloves which makes a big difference to a normal run, especially if the distance is anything over a couple of miles.

I just can't stop. I know I should, but simply can't help myself. Especially when Foxy is out every bloody day (sometimes twice) doing runs.

Tim, I have found currently the earlier I go for a run, the longer it takes me to get into my stride. When I get up early for a run with Lisa, I find it really difficult to get in the groove. On the days I run on my own later in the morning, I find my pace is almost straight away there. Switch on the ipod, hit the road, and I'm in the zone straight away.

Anyways, just thought I would let you all know that I am still running despite knowing my running days should be behind me.

Enjoying it again at the moment. Hopefully it will continue for just a while longer.

And I have a question. What is reasonable pace for swimming? Almost thinking about tri but want to know quite how rubbish I am. I swam a mile (well, 1600 metres) in 40 minutes (not accurately timed) yesterday which is my not being lazy but not really going for it pace.

Cheers folks - thanks for the good wishes. Went out for a short (6k) run last night. Upped the pace a bit and threw in a few Fartlek sprints for the second half of the run. One minute sprints with three minute recoveries - I was wrecked afterwards! Remainder of the week will be easy enough - maybe a few short cycles and a wee bit of jogging at most. Don't want to tire out this old body of mine right before raceday!

I'm the same - it takes me about 12-15 mins to settle into a rhythm when running. After that the autopilot sort of takes over until I hit the first 'wall'. Then there's a bit of mental argument ('you've done it before, you can do it again' - that sorta stuff) before settling back into the rhythm. And so the cycle continues with the arguments getting more and more heated! :)

Was out again this morning with Foxy. Her pace is really starting to come together and she can maintain pace uphill which is something she has struggled with before. Really enjoying going out running with her now. Still keeping fingers crossed my knees, feet and trapped nerve don't rise to the fore and have to stop again. Have a nice new pair of Oakley M Frame sunglasses for that early morning sun too. :)

Well the race went well. Managed to get to the finish line which is a success in itself! :) Did it in 2:12 which is a few minutes faster than last year. Slightly different course and an earlier (9am) start made for easier conditions. Nice n cool at that time of the morning - good for me coz the heat gets to me big time. Did have to walk at one stage (raging about that!) but picked up a good pace near the finish and sprinted across the finish line! Enjoyed the day loads and glad to have another half mara under my belt.

Gonna look around for a local running club and see if I can structure my training a bit more - think I'd benefit from it as my running can be a bit haphazard sometimes...

Ravenscar half marathon had a tough second half, lots of steep gullies with steps arrrrghhh!

Slower than my training runs but hard work, 1hr 50. A few fell runner types about, it was that sort of run!

Did a cruisey 25km training run in Holland yesterday, in 2:04, so sub 5min/km pace which is pretty good for me over this kind of distance, plus it was before breakfast, just a black cup of tea before the run (I'd run out of milk in the dutch house having just driven back from Reading the night before), and a 500ml bottle of squash in my hand as I'd forgotten my camelback type thing. Pretty chuffed.

Well, I was wanting to go out but I seem to have injured myself when out cycling. Got a pain in my knee when walking and bending it, it's in my dodgey knee but it's not the usual pain or inflammation I get. Will give it another couple of days and if it doesn't clear I may have to think about a trip to the Dr.

That's a good time with an injury for sure. I try to work on the basis that if you are carrying long term injuries that come and go, when they are not apparent put some quality training in and go for it. Go quality rather than quantity.

Though on other days I am a weak fool and go the pub.

That's only the half of it. I also suffer badly with my knees and on top of that suffer with flat feet which is really hampering my running. I keep saying I am going to quit running, but can't seem to stop, so have just stopped saying it. :)

I think you may be addicted! It's amazing how quickly you start wanting to get back out. I was running every other day there for about a week and a half and for the past 5 days, I've not been able to get out because I have been putting in silly hours a work and I am now desperate to get on a treadmill (needing to build up on treadmill cos of knee).

I was supposed to get up early this morning to go out with Lisa. Her alarm went at 5.50 and I mind probed her to switch the alarm off and go back to sleep. It worked.

2.74 mile today on treadmill in 30 mins. Still plodding along slowly but I am getting better! Had it set to do incline intervals too, so I was feeling that a bit in the old calves!

Why you in Deutschland? Oh and inclines are good for getting the cardio working better, expanding the lungs which gives lungs more capacity which means more air being sucked in which means more oxygen into the blood stream which means more energy and less fatigue which means better run rate which means better...

Incline work is good. :)

I'm not really in Germany! Yeh, I figured inclines would be good way to help get fitness level up quickly! Just home from work but intending on doing same this afternoon.

This week I have been running in Corfu. Needless to say it is stinking hot. Been plodding up the hills around Sidari in the late afternoon early evening once the lunch time beers have worn off. Have only seen two people out running all week. Lots of old Greeks in the neighbouring villages just standing there watching me jog by. They look confused, I wave, and they just stare.

Did about 4 miles tonight and am now in the bar with a cold Zorbas draught which has all the alcoholic strength of a weak lemonade but does taste mighty fine!

Did a couple of 5kīs earlier this week whilst we were in Baiona, fantastic place to run lots to see and lovely clean sea air. I am actually now running the whole way too which is a major improvement!

Lisa and I seem to be back on it again. Three runs last week and two this week already with another planned for tomorrow morning. Times are going down again but after this mornings effort, a recovery run tomorrow. Nice to see people getting back on track. :)

Kate, that's quite an effort. There are not that many people that could do that and the time you ran makes it all the more impressive.

So after a month of not doing anything, put the trainers on to do my normal run, I was in for a bit of a shock. I know 1 month is a long time, but I didnt expect to feel quite as rubbish as I did. My own fault, must be more consistent with it.

I know what you mean, after coming back from my ankle injury I really felt it. But it's amazing how quickly it comes back. Good luck with being more consistent.

I have been away from my fitness for two weeks now. Mainly due to work and then being away for a week with work. Gonna get to the gym today but think I might struggle a bit.

Sometimes, only sometimes mind, do you see something out running that makes you think aaahhhhh it was worth the struggle getting of my backside and plugging away at it. Couple of Blackberry photos from my Sunday 4 mile with the dogs. The dogs didn't care about the scenery or the horses, just catching rabbits. Never mind.

If I'm out running on my own and not with Foxy, I can run consistantly over 6 miles in under 7 minute miles. together we are doing around 8 minute miles.

My running this year has been shockingly dire.
Jan 49 miles
Feb 0 miles
Mar 6 miles
Apr 0 miles
May 10 miles
June 0 miles
July 36 miles
Aug 29 miles

I have done the odd few runs which I never recorded but still, a very poor performance. I suffered a trapped nerve in my neck in January which took out the next 4 months. May was one single run. Hopefully the 2nd half of the year is going to show a few more miles on the register.

TIB What lovely places to run!!!

Stig, and here I thought my measly 35 miles this year so far was doing ok!

Have been getting back out there, but my distances and stamina are way down from where I left off a month ago. Although it is nice right now to go running in our local park and see a lot of beginners out there, it kind of spurs me on a bit.

10km yesterday before breakfast and 19km this evening (including 5km of hill repeats). Still the odd twinge from my ankle, I have to watch it on cambers and dips.

Where are you running TIB?

And Stig that's a good pace!

I'm lucky where I live there's lots of nice off road places but it's all fairly hilly though. This was at the top of Polecat Valley, Devils Punchbowl, Hindhead Surrey. They also have a herds of Longhorn Cattle roaming around which can startle you when you turn a corner and see one right in front of you. I love running up there in the Summer.

Got a weekend away in York drinking so no running again for me until Monday morning. Although my friend who we are going to see is a fitness instructor and he seems to think I will be attending his boot camp tonight.

Hmmm not so sure about that. Last time I did anything like that was over 13 years ago when I was still in the Army.

Anyone used an app called couch to 10k? I'm looking at using it to get myself started again after nearly 15 years of not running.

Anyone used an app called couch to 10k? I'm looking at using it to get myself started again after nearly 15 years of not running.

not used the app, but if it isnt free I wouldnt bother.... the normal outline for the c210k is:

Week 1:
Go to a local track because the distances are exact (or use gps). Once on the track walk 1/2 lap, then jog 1/2 lap, walk a half, jog a half for 1 mile. You will alternate jogging & running 8 times (4 each) and complete 4 full laps, that's exactly 1 mile. Now no matter how good you feel, go home. Do this 4 to 6 days a week; never less than 4 days or more than 6 days weekly.

When you complete 4 full laps, that's exactly 1 mile, now no matter how good you feel, go home. Do this 4 to 6 days a week.

Never less than 4 days or more than 6 days weekly.

Week 2:
(4 to 6 days per week) Start with a 5 minute warm up walk, then alternate walking & jogging and walk only half the distance of each jog, as follows:
Jog 1/4 mile (one lap) then
Walk 1/8 mile (1/2 half lap)
Jog 1/2 mile (2 laps)
Walk 1/4 mile (1 lap)
Jog 1/4 mile (1 lap)
Walk 1/8 mile (half-lap)
Jog 1/2 mile...go home

Week 3:
5 Days this week:
Day 1: Brisk 5 minute warm up walk, then:
1/2 mile jog, 1/4 mile walk, 1/2 mile jog, 1/4 mile walk, 1/2 mile jog; total 2 miles. Go home
Day 2: 5 minute warm up, then: 3/4 mile jog (3 laps) 1/2 mile walk (2 laps) 3/4 mile jog; total 2 miles. Go home.
Day 3: 5 minute warm up then: 2 mile jog (8 laps) NO WALKING!!! Catch your breath and go home. Good job.
Day 4: Repeat day 3
Day 5: Repeat Day 2.

Week 4:
5 workouts this week.
Day 1: warm up, then: 1/2 mile jog, 1/4 mile walk, 3/4 mile jog, 1/4 mile walk, 1/2 mile jog: total 2 1/4 miles. Go home.
Day 2: warm up, then: 1 mile jog (4 laps) 1/4 mile walk, 1 mile jog; total 2 1/4 miles. Go home.
Day 3: warm up, then: 2 1/4 mile jog (9 laps) NO WALKING! Day 4: Repeat Day 2
Day 5: Repeat Day3
