Good luck for the 20 miler Sarah, I will be 2 miles behind you on Sunday!
Will you be able to see the "silly" tan lines from that distance?
Enjoy the running people, I'm off to use gravity to power me down the snow, should be in resort in approx 20 hrs!

Ive got a couple of apps myself, runkeeper, motion x GPS and mapmyrun the problem I have is that it sometimes struggles to locate satelites and the iphone battery is famously weak, Im looking to get a garmin 305 but its just cash as per usual thats the stumbling block
Yes the Iphone battery is a problem, not sure what im going to do when running longer distances. I think i will buy a better Polar Watch and HR monitor with the distance functions on it. Then i can just use my Iphone for music.
I did a 5.38 mile run this morning, im pleased really as im still getting over a nasty head cold.
I forced myself to the gym yesterday to sweat the last out of me but i think it came out of my nose more than my pores lol. The bin was filled with used tissues lol. lovely!
I have signed up for Sport Releif today! March 21st 6 miles.
Anyone want to sponsor me?

I'm assuming that you just finished the 20 miler :-)
Get some protein rich food down you to help your muscles recover. Tuna is perfect but loads of oithers to choose from. Ideally within 2 hours of finishing the run.
If you finished, bloody well done. Thats a long way.

Yup :-D
I almost turned round and went home after 2 miles because my legs felt so ouchy but I decided to go for it and I am soooooo glad I did.
It was endorphin-tastic!
I tackled a big hill at about fifteen and a half miles, normally I'd have walked some of it but I just kept going.
I was so overcome with emotion that I burst into tears at nearly 17 miles and again when I got home.
I wasn't fast, it took me just over 4 hours, but I flipping did it :-D

Thats excellent. I know what you mean about the emotions, its a massive sense of achievement when you tick off these milestones. At London last year I was a blubbering mess for the last mile. When you finish (and of course you will) you will be unable to hold back the tears, its a truly amazing feeling.
I was working away last week at a work conference so it was a real struggle to fit in any running. I managed about 65% of what I needed to do but was constrained by time. All in all though I was happy to get in at least some running.
Just back from a 4 mile recovery run and off for a 14 mile long slow run tomorrow.

I can't wait!!!! I think I'll take some spare contact lenses with me, I nearly lost one today when I wiped my tears away!

Well i got up this morning intending going for another run and increasing my distance.
So i had a target of 7 miles!
I overshot that by another mile so ended up with 8 miles run this morning.
I know ive done it, my legs are very tired but im glad i did it. There was a lot of hills included too as i need hill practice for a run i have coming up in April called the Killer Mile up a 1.3 gradient hill.
Gym tomorrow no running lol. My legs need a break!

Quite simply put: that is a super run! 20 miles is a really big milestone, mentally and physically as it takes you past the "mythical wall"...so now you know you can!!
Well done Sarah, you have used so many calories today you can eat what you like for the rest of the day. Give yourself a treat and a pat on the back, your running lately really deserves it!:smt023
I could do with some endorphins, never get them!

PV it's all good! Are you getting used to it now? 8 miles is a bl00dy long way and easy far enough for your up and coming race! Don't forget to have cut back weeks, where you do less running.
I managed an 18 mile LSR, today and made sure I did the S bit as I always go too fast and sod it up. Really ache now, but it did help me rise the fetch chart again, which seems to be my new obsession...

Yes im getting used to it now. I am finding im aching this afternoon and i have a couple of blisters despite the running socks. But i think thats more to do with the fact that i went running 5.4 miles yesterday too!
So i think i will make sure i run every other day untill my feet are well and truly run proof lol.
Really enjoying it though, i have deffinately got the bug for it.
I have no worries about the 5 milers now, i know i can do them without walking in places and that its going to take me roughly 50 mins. My 5.4 miler yesterday took me 57 mins.
Next week i will run some shorter distances as i dont want to ruin myself for the 21st Febs run.
Fair play to Sarah and 20 miles! Wow!
Today was a great day for running here in Wallasey. Nice and cool, barely any wind and we had the waves crashing in for a nice backdrop.
I did a nice solid 14 miler today at a steady 8m45s pace at the same time as keeping my heart rate below 152 which I'm chuffed with. Back down to London tomorrow but back for Tuesdays run.
This training programme is looking like its working for me already Kev, it is holding me back but I thing thats doing me good. I've been working on figuring out how to increase pace without heart rate and its working wonders, it gives you loads of confidence knowing that you arent tiring at all over long distances. When I do the marathon pace runs I feel like I'm set free with another gear change up to (an extra 10/15 heart beats per min).

Ahh, great stuff and well achieved, the actual thing should be a breeze for you by the sound of it :-)
wow Sarah that is absolutely amazing well done. Dont normally post in here as I dont run myself due to an ankle injury I got a couple of years ago, if I try to run on it it just becomes too painful. Just had to post to say well done though I cant even imagine how tired you must be feeling now ;)
O.M.G.
well done Sarah, nice one. :D
That is just awesome Sarah. You have progressed so far so quickly. :thumright:
I have been making excuses not to go out running at the moment. Latest one is a visit to the dentist this morning has made me feel very much like not wanting to run.
Thanks for all the encouraging words everyone, I genuinely appreciate it :-D
Just 4 miles this evening. And it was snowing. Brrrrrrr wearing shorts!
Oh yeah, I also meant to say that I store up all the nice things people say and put them in the motivation section of my brain and call on them when necessary ;-)
I strongly recommend making up a store of motivation for when you are feeling CBA or like you just want to turn around and walk home.
I'm back on the street again:D
Had 3 weeks off as wife had a gynae op, it took a lot longer to recover from then she thought, so me going out running and leaving her to cook clean and bottlewash wasn't fair. And then I had a busy week at work last week...
I was itching to get back - and tonight I did 6.39 miles in 57m10s. Felt stiff and uncomfortabe to start with but after a mile and a bit it was just great and I didn't want to head for home. Plus I have invested in a iPod shuffle, having avoided them for a long while it was a bit of a turn around for me, but I did enjoy having some noise.
Hope you're all doing good:D
I brought my kit in with me today. I actually purposely left it in the hallway, got in the car to drive off and then went back in and got it. Time will tell if I actually put it to any use today.
Good to see you back on it Ed. :)

Si get out there and run you big tart!
BTW did you see that thing on the Royal Mail last night? stolen parcels, nicking money from cards, throwing parcels marked fragile...I was shouting and cursing at the tele! I was also keeping an eye out to see if my package was in any of their pallets as it was filmed just before Xmas.

I'm still finding it hard to quit completely. Danger times are when out on the bike or on days when I go to Liverpool. On both occasions I'm usually surrounded by smokers, and I can't help myself. Only a few mind but it's only a few too many:rolleyes:

Such kind words.
Excuse of the day. I did some weights last night. Something I haven't done for a while. I have strained the right Trapezius muscle which is damn painful.

I didn't but I bet one of them out there had a nice pair of trainers for Christmas. :( Robbin bastids.
I'm thinking of joing the gym to tone up, but fear I may have left it to late for 27th April?
There are some SERIOUS runners on Fetch, every day I slip further down the board, despite running reasonable mileage...where do they find the time and energy, oh and the knees?
Did another 8 miles today including some 100m sprint reps, pretty hard work. Nice easy 5 miler tomorrow.

Same run for me too today mate - supposed to be 7 miles for me though. Had to make it a 9.25 though to fit it in (ran home).
12 miler tomorrow.
The P&D schedule are good aren't they? especially with a bit of background as to why.
Feel free to read them into a mic so I can have it as an audio book, might actually take some in!
The P&D schedule are good aren't they? especially with a bit of background as to why.
Yeah, its a pretty steep schedule to work through though. The easiest one covers 55 miles per week towards the latter stages, that was a fairly big step up from where I was at but it does appear to be working well.
Remember I started by asking what pace I could improve to, this book has basically shown me how my body dictates that rather than a guess. Funny thing is that my guess wasn't far off the mark but now I have it confirmed which is great for my confidence during a long run.
I have a long way to go leading up to May but early signs are encouraging.

I'm running the same plan right now - 55 miles a week is a bloody long way.
So what is the aim for Edinburgh?
I am thinking of doing Edinburgh too, but it is probably too close to London. The other option is to bag my sub-3:45 from Abingdon and run sensible distances (up to 10 mi).

You must be further along the plan than I am and of course on the back of a more recent marathon. Think I've completed 3 weeks and currently on my 4th out of 18.
I havent set a target for Edinburgh other than sub 4h, baring injury I'm fairly confident I can achieve that. My long marathon pace runs over the coming few months will give me a more accurate estimate but so far my pace is definitely faster and more consistent over longer distances.
As for Edinburgh, why attempt it so soon after London? Save it for another year and take some rest after London.
One other thought, I've been keeping an eye in the proposed Liverpool 2010 marathon. If it comes off then is proposed for October. I would give that some serious thought as its only 4 months after Edinburgh and runs right past my road.
...so the temptation to stop off will be overwhelming:D

This may have been canned now?
I have still not run. Probably wont run now for another couple of weeks or so. Shoulder is still painful and then there is getting ready for moving house. Think I can safely say goodbye to my yearly target already.
And relax.....:-) I have a day off running. wahay.

Really dont know, the website is still up and says watch this space. Would be good to have a marathon on my door step though :-)
Ran to work this morning in the heavy rain/sleet/snow....loved it. A 54 mile week this week and I am getting tired, may scrap my 5 mile recovery run tomorrow in favour of a better quality 20 miler on Sunday.
Just back from 15 miles. Was a tough one today, I guess the wine last night didnt help. Anyway, pushed me up to number 699 on the Fetch training league :-)

I had a skin full on Friday night got home very late and it all resulted in my having a CBA day yesterday, 5 miler cancelled...
Sometimes it's good to blow out a run or two, it helps remind you thst there is other stuff than running - oh and it freshens your legs for the next run!
Just checked the profile of the run on the garmin and it was a 6 mile climb with a few dips! No wonder my legs are in shreds...Although the down hill section was almost worth the climb!
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l286/krhall_2006/Untitled-2.jpg
week off work so going to get some long runs in (if the knees hold out).
Try to get higher up the fetch ladder.
Ye gods that's one awesome climb Kev:cool: and your pace is remarkably consistent, hill or no hill:cool:
It never felt as tough as it looks, apart from the bit up to Brands Hatch.
I did notice a few things earlier on my run though:
1. 5 miles is still a bloody long way, even on a relatively flat road!
2. Music can take you to a time and place instantly, with the same feelings. I put some old hardcore tunes on my iphone and one came on up a little hill, I was instantly transported to a rave in the early 90's was the strangest feeling ever, felt the same just minus the E's!
3. Running hurts, but the achievement never diminishes no matter what the distance.
4. My new running shoes are now looking worn!
5. No two runs are ever the same even on the same route.
I also incorporated a reverse of my first ever 5 miler as the first 5 miles today and strangely it felt as tough as it did back then, if I knew then what I do now...would I have still run it?
Seriously I ran from Dartford to Maidstone today and I remember not being able to make it round the block 3 years ago and 8 years ago I smoked and got out of breath running up the stairs...
Get out and run - it is good for you!
Not wanting to take anything away Kev but I've noticed my Garmin tells me some very strange things with regard to elevation during a run.
I typically run along the prom here at New Brighton, it is as flat as a pancake yet my Garmin tells me I climbed 600 meters, total cobblers. Not at all sure were the inaccuracy comes in.
No Flymo, you're right. It was a big climb but not sure I was climbing for 6 miles, although once you do a steep climb a slight incline feels flat, looks like a mountain in the garmin but not actually a mountain although it is the north downs!
Hey guys, got back from Brize last night after my first weekend of basic training, managed to do the required amount of presss ups and sit ups but missed out on the bleep test by less than 20 mtrs, needed to get up to level 7.1 or above, actually managed 7.4 but was marked down to 7.0 for some reason, anyway no biggie, Ive got 3 months to boost my training for the main one in may, plus got my training dates for the year and Im free for the cardiff half, dunno if anyone is going to be up for it or not.
I could be persuaded to do Cardiff half. I can't think of a better way to celebrate my birthday :-D

I ran 8.5 miles on Saturday and i have decided im going to take it steady for a bit and not increase my distance anymore for a week or so.
I jumped from running 5.5 miles to 8 quite quickly and i know im pushing myself in the last mile and a half.
Nut if i run trhe 8.5 miles for a week or two i think i will be ready to up again then.
Oh no, someone else has been bitten by the running bug...
The more you run the more you need new running shoes, at least that's what I say!
In the last 3 years I have swapped Patrick Cox for Asics and Armani for Ron Hill & Adidas...
Recently I have even been found wearing tracksuit bottoms out on two occasions, as they are "comfy" after a run!

You're turning into a scouser.....calm down calm down. You'll be walking to the shops in your PJs next.

Anyway, I said Tracksuit and not Shell Suit!
Guess what. Still not been for a run. It's one thing after another at the moment. After spending all day Saturday outside fitting cambelt and alternator belt I managed to get myself quite a heavy chest cold. Also moving Thursday/Friday so very busy in the house. Running has taken a back seat for the time being.
Might not be a bad thing anyway mate, you'll be hungry for a run and enjoy getting back to it!
I hate the rapid decline in performance. It's demoralizing. I would much prefer to be running consistanty even if it were just a couple runs a week. Never mind. Once the move is over I have the enjoyment of finding new routes to run. So not all bad. :)
I could be persuaded to do Cardiff half. I can't think of a better way to celebrate my birthday :-D
So does anyone else fancy doing this ? its a bit of a hike for me but if others fancy it Ill have a go, would like to do it for Hovis and his charity and one other little fundraiser as well, also does anyone think I should stick this in the main idle banter ? dont really want people to get all excited early on then not bother later if you know what I mean
After TGI Fajitas, a couple of cokes then coming home for a Golden Syrup pancake I thought my 6 mile recovery run was dead and buried, but I forced myself out at 9:30 last night and struggled round...
Burping fajita burps the whole way round!!!
Didn't enjoy it though, but having missed saturday's run due to hangover thought I'd better get out there!

I am interested in doing this, but would def be worth gauging interest and support!

I wouldn't be able to do (much) fund raising as I've already been asking everyone I know (and people I don't know) for sponsorship for the London marathon: I wouldn't like to ask people for money again so soon but would defo like to run.
The charity I'm raising money for is very close to my heart (see link in my sig) and I really want to do the best I can for them.
Why not start a thread in idle banter after the London marathon. People are often enthused about running after that and we might get more people to join in. Would give enough time to start training for it and the weather should be warmer and days longer by then. This is presuming that Cardiff half doesn't sell out.
Tbh Ive raised the subject a couple of times now and dont want to labour it and make peeps feel theyre being kinda forced into doing something, so Ill leave it for now and gauge it as it goes along.
Not been out since last thursday, worked hard recently to get my fitness levels up and having a bit of break til the weekend.
This weeks training is going well so far (touch wood). Managed to get 35 miles in so far (which has got me up to 789 in the fetch ladder).hope to get it up to 50 for the week Only one problem the kids are with the outlaws tonight and there is beer and wine in the fridge.
Looks like i shal have to run off a hangover

I went for my first run after skiing on Tuesday, just a short half hour affair. I was fine until the last few hundred metres when it felt like a strip of my calf had really tightened up, so I just walked it back and thought little of it.
I tried heading out for a run this evening and felt the same thing again within about 600m, tried to jog it off for a little further but no joy so turned round and plodded home not wanting to exacerbate it/cause other issues.
Any ideas what I've done? Just rest for a few days then try to go for a few gentle runs? It's annoying as I was wanting to hit the running hard after the week of skiing.

Good Luck Sarah - You'll Smash It!
I felt selfish for going for another long run today, after 20 miles last week and have a niggly knee which has been plaguing me for a couple of weeks now, so I am sacking my 16 miler as I sacked my 6 yesterday.
So have spent the whole weekend as a family, instead of the weekend being dictated by me.
Could do with a run but the rest will do me good, not too sure what it will do to my plan though, oh well running isn't the be all (actually it is, I'm trying to convince myself I have done the right thing!).
I'll call it a taper for Tunbridge Wells Half next week!

Rah bring it on!
Challenge doesnt even cover it, it has to be the most stupidly crazy thing i have ever done. The route was like an assault coarse in places with really steep inclince and then drops off a cliff, all that in 5 inches of snow and mud. They even had you running over streams covered by metal grids all snow covered. Health and safety....what health and safety lol.

Thanks to my Hubby who took me too, in the snow, some of the roads were bad too.
I did the 5 mile route in 56 minuets, im happy at that considering what i had to run through lol.
Awesome, sounds like fun.
I opened the curtains to a light snow covering this morning. Went out for my 16 miler and completed in 2h 18m so bang on target for May. It was snowing when I left the house but from 10 mins in it was a beautiful sunny morning, crisp and cold. Perfect for running.
Oh yeah, and reached position 590 in the Fetch league, get in there!

Like, distance?
Like, distance?
Anything that might motivate you. Perhaps distance, time to complete a distance, enter a running race and train for it, raise some money for a charity that means something to you, follow a training programme, get a running partner, join a running club....all sorts of possibilities. You'll find plenty of support on this thread.
But, whatever you choose you'll have a reason to run. Then when you achieve what you aimed for, or even at various milestones towards it you'll feel great.
After all that if you're not enjoying it then perhaps running isnt for you.

I normally think of some hot chicks going "OMG Allan you're so hot", or listen to motivational music, but still, after a few miles, I'm not tired, Im just bored. I used to row, then run.. Sport is my favourite exercise though,I could play bball all day

Have you tried changing the playlist to something that you wont get fed up of? or another thing I tried was to download podcasts of comedy programmes or whatever

Yeah Ive tried that.. no worries, this seems to have a "help me" attitude about it! I just think running's not my thing.
After an hour or two, arent you all just like "EUGH... I could be playing COD!"

I can only speak for myself here but honestly....no, I dont feel that way. If I did then why would I be out there?
I was out this morning on a 16 mile run that took over 2 hours. For me it was a period of time where I was thinking through what I was doing, how I was doing it, rehearsing my marathon and thinking about every aspect of how I was approaching it.
On top of that I had a period where I could simply think, I was running at a particular pace that didnt require concentration. I was thinking about my holiday, my kids, my work on Monday and a dozen other things.
Running isnt every ones cup of tea, but early morning runs in the rain, running on the beach in the summer, just fantastic. I find a long run gives me some time to my self & time to think.

Running on the beach in winter is great too :-)
I nipped out for a quickie yesterday lunchtime and did a couple of miles barefoot on the beach in Worthing. The tide was out so there was a bit of sand to run on.

That's rotten. So annoying. I sympathise.
I still have not run. Had plenty of arm exercise with paint brushes though.
Brighton was grim.
What happened Sarah ?
Ive been getting a few miles in this last week but have a slightly strange situation, Im running further, more often and feel stronger so why have my times gone south ? not long ago I was heading down to the lower 9 min mile pace now I seem to be up in the 9:50,s all the time, bloody annoying tbh, its even more annoying cos I never stopped running despite all the lousy weather we,ve had in the last few months, anyway, onwards and upwards and all that.

This may sound strange but can anyone give me any tips on learning to run?
Im trying to get fit, lose weight and so on, I use my cross trainer a lot and walk as much as I can, but I cant get into running. I tried it on a treadmill and it kills me. I can do an hour on the cross trainer but as soon as i try running im stuffed
I guess it must be the impact, I suffered really badly with 'impact induced asthma' when I was at school, so athletics was horrid for me, then 18 years of 20-40 a day probably havent helped, but I kicked the fags last year and am starting to get fitter so runnign seems like a good idea.

It was cold, wet, windy, a rather boring route and not terribly well organised. No disasters, just a bit of an anti-climax. I'm sure it was good practice for doing a big race though.

Try run/walk. It worked for me :-)
I started off doing 20 minutes, I'd 'run' for a minute then walk for a minute and then repeat until I'd gone around the block (which took about 20 minutes).
Then, gradually as I got fitter and it seemed easier I'd run a bit more and walk a bit less and also up the distance. Easy peasy ;-)
I went for another bare foot run along the beach after work today. Did 6 miles this time. Bit of a mistake. I now have blisters on both my big toes :-( Hope this doesn't sod up my weekend LSR :-(
Havent run bare foot on the beach for a long time. Next time i visite the outlaws its top of my list
