Im very envious of everyone doign so many miles. I'm working through one of the couch to 5k programs, doing run/walk intervals and so on. How important are shoes, do you just wear 'standard' trainers ie a general pair of Nike/Reebok etc or do you have specific running shoes. Has anyone been for gait analysis, is it worthwhile? Im doing most of my training so far on gravel paths/trails. Currently round a nice little lake (large pond). Aiming to step up to Tittesworth reservoir, my goal is being able to run the whole of Tittesworth (4.5 miles)

Dont be envious, everyone is at different stages and we all started from where you are now. You will be able to improve at a greater rate than any of us.

On the shoes, to start with I wouldnt worry too much but if this captures your enthusiasm as it did for me then yes you really do need to get a suitable running shoe that suits your particular gait. Dont guess, its false economy and you'll end up replacing them if you are lucky enough not to injure yourself, I know from experience that it isnt worth it.

Find a good running shop near you and ask for help choosing the right shoe, where are you roughly? There may be somebody on here able to recommend a good local shop. I use 'Up and Running' in Liverpool, excellent shop with good advice and gait analysis equipment. I also used the Asics store off Regent Street in London as I was passing and that is excellent.

Having a target like you've mentioned is the best way to start, once you've acheived that (and you will) then you can up the anti and find a new goal. Good on you. Keep us up to date on how you get on.

Hello peeps, just back, found some mojo and got out the door... thank you flymo - 4.58 miles in 42.16. That included a brief stop to adjust my iPod. So, about 9 min miling - no great shakes but given a lack of motivation it's OK I spose - certainly better than nothing:D

Ed, I'm taking a run up as we speak......................thwack! There, now get your ass out and get running! :-)

Ha - made me do it too, limped around a 10k run. No pain and a half-decent (for me) pace...

(actually it was watching Supersize Vs Superskinny that made me do it)

Out in the States since early Monday. Running miles = 0 Food = lots, yesterday I even had deep fried cheese cake for desert (avoid it, it doesn't even taste nice!).

I plan to go running round the car parks near the hotel tonight before I explode, and will probably follow it up with a big steak. Not ideal marathon training, I think I'll have to trim down a bit before the event in two weeks and three days time.....

I've just secured the hire car for the evening, so I'm off to run round LSU lake :)

It's currently about 23 deg C, but will cool a little, so shorts and T-shirt for the first time this year :D And plenty of college girls running too

Bow is pretty close by so that's probably best. Somewhere familiar = less nerves! Is he close to a DLR station?

Get some miles on them shoes then put them away.

Decide on your most comfortable/favourite kit now and put it away, one less thing to panic about once taper madness sets in!

I can confirm LSU's lakes are ideal for running around, plenty to view.

Running in the warmth was great, so much so I went back for another run 6am the next morning, also handy in burning off the burger I'd had in Hooters the night before....

Was intending to do Liverpool HM today but I woke up too late and my heart wasn't in it - so I bailed. Did 11.4 over to Montford Bridge (AR06 campsite, remember?) and back instead, deliberately doing slow - 9.5min/miling. Speed will come... I forgot:rolleyes: to bring some money with to buy a drink at the shop over Montford Bridge, so I was feeling dehydrated on the way back.

More like OW as it goes. It was the run that was to decide marathon or not.

Have decided yes, but to go with the original plan of getting round and properly enjoying it this time, which in a way is good. No pressure. Don't think I am in a good enough state to run the full distance, but reckon I can get to 20 then walk/run the rest and there's no shame in having a walk.

too slow :-(

all on fetch

krhall
29-03-10, 07:54 PM
Not too slow, it was a training run and supposed to be that way. How far off 5 hours was it?

The only advice I have is take the 1st 10k slowly and not get carried away and running round people (easy for me to say that now, bitter experience), then you will be in your stride and things will have thinned out a bit. If you want to you can then pick up your pace.

krhall
29-03-10, 08:03 PM
3:30, is that right? Never done that looking at other users runs before.

that gives you 90 mins to do 8 miles, from what I remember you said you felt ok after, so add the crowd and your adrenalin and you will probably do 18 miles quicker (but be careful) on the day giving you a bit more leeway.

Don't do what I did though and do the 1st 10k in a pb time then have dramas and not enjoy yourself. Make your main target to enjoy the atmosphere, if you get a sub-5 then that's great, but don't make it the be all!

Just completing the marathon and raising money for BIRT is a challenge in itself and one that most people will never even attempt let alone complete.

BE PROUD of your running
BE PROUD of the sponsorship you've raised

If you can run comfortable at that HM pace and not 'going for it' then IMO that should be your pace past 10k.

Just a quick one, and a bit strange, what underwear do you lot use when running?

I use my tightish type cotton boxers, but have an inkling they might not be the best!

If I forget them, I simply won't run it is so painful if I do it without. I would be walking like John Wayne for days!

Did a 2hr LSR tonight (winding the length down as less than 2 weeks to marathon day), 2nd hour in the rain. As it was a bit chilly I put a string type runnin vest on underneath my long sleeve T. It was good from the point of view of helping me keep dryish and slightly warm, however the other T on top caused it to rub a little, jogger's nipple anyone?

Right, this may sound like a stupid question but!
Do running socks wear out at all? I bought them 4 months ago and they stopped blisters from occurring during my runs, but i seem to be suffering with them again?

Suggestion welcome please?

Are they the double skinned version? Invest in a pair, they're fantastic.

I'm in Falmouth at the moment. It's so hilly here, I swear that there isn't a flat street in the town. So 5.07 very hilly miles in 48.08 mins. Not just hills, it's blowing a howling gale out on the seafront and it was hard to make any progress at all. Bit disappointed about the pace, I thought I was doing a bit better, perhaps it was cos of the huge Cornish pasty for lunch that I could still feel sat in my tum:D

I ran up the hill, then cos I'd had the pain of the uphill I turned round and had the fun of the downhill with spectacular views over the sea. Then along the seafront and back through the town, the entire last mile is uphill. Back in 1.03. I used to be able to do that loop in about 53 mins. Is it age? Lack of training? Or what?

I was buggered by the end of 20 miles but considering the dip in training and the strong winds for the first 10 miles I was pretty chuffed to get home inside my target pace. I have another crack at 20 miles in about 3 or 4 weeks so will be looking to finish at same pace but with another 6 miles in reserve for the final push. To be honest though I made it to 20 miles with enough time to crank out 10 minute miles and still be inside 4 hours so have to be happy with that.

All in all its looking good so far.

Sub-4 is in the bag mate...i'm reckoning on a quicker time in your head!

Don't try and self-diagnose Sarah, if you are like me you will always read the worst one possible.

Rest and see how you feel.

slightly concerned that knee ouch may be this:

This is what I suffer from constantly. A massive course of physio sorted me out for a while. I got orthotics to wear in my trainers but they give me horrendous blisters so run without them.

Sarah, do you get clicking/cracking in your knee as well?

Oh and I agree with Kev. Don't self diagnose. Go see the Doc's and let them tell you. I thought I had cartlige problems when I started getting problems with my knee. In fact I was convinced I did. So much for self diagnosis.

I know that I nearly overpronate with my right foot so maybe I was over pronating which caused a prob. Knee clicks sometimes but never been a prob before.

Was weird. I was runnning, went up a big hill, along a flattish bit at the top, slowed to have a drink and go down the other side of the hill (it was really slippery so needed to go slowly) and it really hurt. Had to hobble down the hill. Knee hurt to even walk on. Was fine if i kept my knee locked straight but hurt when I put any weight on it when it was bent.

Rested yesterday, going for a little run this evening.

It doesn't hurt now at all but at times I can feel that it's not quite right, if you know what I mean.

If tonight's run is a disaster I'll phone doc/physio in the morning.

It does all seem a bit familiar. But then I am not a doctor or a physio so what do I know. I have though learnt (the hard way) that when something hurts, stop doing what it is that makes it hurt. Best of luck with your run this evening.

Foamroller - really hurts but helps massage the pains away!

I'm amazed, 48 hours after doing 20 miles and being basically knackered I popped out for my scheduled 8 mile run tonight and was bouncing with energy. Amazing how one can recover so quickly.

I had a look for my running gear/sports bag this morning. Can't find it. I think that may have been just as well.

Bouncing - I vaguely remember being that fit. It's a great feeling though eh?

I wouldnt say I was particularly fit, judging by the speed of some of the runners I am passed by on a regular basis :-)

Fitness and speed are not related, at least if they are I was never and am not now fit!

It's a great feeling to bounce along!

Yeah, thats true.

On a serious note, if there is any secret then for me it would be;

1. Stay within your limits and push the boundaries gently, don't do too much too soon.
2. Always always stretch properly at the end of a run, I always have problems if I dont. If you dont know how then ask/learn.
3. Fuel properly before and after a long run. Build the necessary energy a few hours before with carbohydrate rich foods, hydrate fully with water or squash in the days leading up to a run, and eat protein rich food immeadiately after a long run (Tuna works well for me)

and of course Flapjack ;-)
