Nor can I! I am blaming my lack of PB on that...oh and stopping to walk many times. I'm hoping there are some pictures of it!!! (not the walking, the beer drinking!)
Sneaked in with 3:46 (just), so that's fine and me signing off for marathon running.
Flymo - the baton is now handed to you for Edinburgh!
Kev do you really mean that you are now retired from marathons? Really truly?
Ive give up on the london marathon, been rejected 3 times now, even donated my entrance fee 3 times and now have a nice collection of FLM and VLM branded t shirts/running jackets etc,ah well never mind, well done to all of you who did it

Hello all you runner types, I need some advice. I used to be a very keen runner. I was in the T.A for 23yrs so i was queit fittish.
About 4yrs ago i was out on a run and my right knee popped. I remember it was very painful. It turns out i snappet my lateral collateral ligament in my right knee. After a lengthy wait early last year i had a operation to fix it. All of the pain is gone, now it just aches to let me know it's still there:D
Some one at work put me on the idea of taking Glucosamine Sulphate and cod liver oil tablet's and i've got to say they seem to be working so much so that yesterday while out walking i tried jogging for about quarter of a mile and my knee felt great.
So can any one else out there surjest any other treatment for my knee so i can take up running again. One of the first things i know i can do is get a good pair of trainers but any more advise would be helpful. Would sopport bandges help!!
Thanks Madjohn.
There were people at the side of the road not long after fetch point and no one was taking it. So being desperate for something other than water or sports drink I foolishly took it, got a great cheer and it seemed like a great idea until about half a mile to a mile later...
I quite fancied a pint when I went past one of the pubs, the smell of beer was seriously tempting. Don't think I could have done it at mile 22, I wasn't a happy bunny at that point!
Yeah, me and Mrs.H are going away for our 10th wedding anniversary tomorrow am.
Congrats, I hope that you have a fab time.
The funny thing is I don't even like bitter at the best of times, let alone at 22 miles into a marathon!
At one point someone at the side of the road was smoking and I felt like nicking that too, I haven't smoked for 8 years.
I'm currently wondering which marathon to sign up for next...
Kev do you really mean that you are now retired from marathons? Really truly?
Yes mate seriously, well at least until the kids are older I realised how selfish I was being with the training. I may pick it back up in a few years. Going to carry on with halfs and 10k's though.

Good trainers that suit you properly will really help. Go to somewhere like sweatshop for gait analysis, should help stop your knees from over-flexing etc.
Also start slowly, to the point where you feel you are running ridiculously slow once you are used to it you can try increasing the pace.
Lastly don't run more than every other day when you first get into it as you need time to adapt.

It's full :-(
On my birthday too, would have been a fab way to celebrate. Thinking of doing Cardiff half which is also on that day though :-)

Hey did you try the ladies urinals in Blue Start, I had to look at the sign about 4 or 5 times to believe it!
Apparently the girls were given those "she wee" things and normal urinals like the blokes...genius.
Abingdon is great and only about 1000 runners. Sold out for this year though, even though it isn't until October.
Edinburgh is supposed to be good and fast.
Yes we did speak about Cardiff half on here before, I would be up for that money permitting.

 I didn't try them out, no. The queues for the portaloos at the far end weren't very long.

Abingdon is flat and there is a reserve list on fetch (put your name down), the race director is a fetchie too.
Alternatively the North Downs Run is a really tough run, just over 19 miles but a real test of determination. Gets super reviews every year, very scenic, running through poppy fields etc.

I couldn't contain myself last night. All the old feelings started returning. I wanted to go out for a run, Well a jog really. This thread is to blame. I blame all you lot for doing this to me. If it all goes tits up and i wreck my knee again i'm blaming you lot.;)
So my next problem was finding some running kit........Eh i've got none. I throw it all in the bin when i shagged my knee. So i improvised. I used a work sweat top, a pair of camouflaged shorts and my five year old Asics GT-2090 which are well and truly shagged. I had a stretch and off i went.
28 mins later and 2 miles later i was back at the front door out of breath and knackered but a big smile on my face. Got a lot of catching up to do but i anit going to hurry don't want to fook my knee again.
I have and will follow all your points Krhall. There all good points. I'll get my trainer's on Saturday, but the shorts are going to have to wait as i'm getting a GSXR shock for the Gladie.
Another very slow jog tomorrow if legs don't hurt so much. My only regret is i wish i kept my running logs for more inspiration. :(

Nice one with the Marathon Sarah (and anyone else who ran it on the org).
I'm back to running again (seem to restart every few months!).
I've been for 3 two milers and a 1 mile in the last week. Slowing to walk on the 2 milers (there's a hill, OK!), but getting better- did 20:15 last Weds with a couple of walks, 19"35 on Sunday with 3 walks and 19:17 tonight with 2 walks in there.
Feels like my running is getting better, but the lungs are playing catch up! And does anyone else find warm air harder to breath?! Maybe the hayfever/allergies, but it's like I'm trying to breathe in treacle!
Still- I'm feeling much better for it- and my backing vocals in the band are getting much easier already!
Jog on!
Hi all, could I ask you to take a look at this video for me, its 7 minutes long but worth the effort. I just want to introduce you to a little girl called Amy. Give it a chance to buffer some of the video before clicking 'play'.

Yowch- did my 2 miler in 18:35- well chuffed with that. Got my breath back then did a 100m sprint and have pulled the top of my left quad. Hoping it doesn't put me out of action for more than a few days...
I should have stretched after the long run...Hindsight is a wonderful thing!!

My 3rd run of the week and a whole 6 miles this month.
Mon 28 mins
Wed 26 mins
Fri 25mins.
That's quiet a improvement for my first three runs but on the way back from my last one my right leg seized up and i got cramp in my thigh. Which got me thinking maybe i'm tying to hard. I don't think i should be going for time at the moment but concentraing on just getting round with out stopping. What do you all think.
My new trainers where ok but i think they need i few more runs before they become comfertable but i did'nt get any pain from my dodgy knee so that was good.
Next run Sunday.

good for them :-)
I'm tempted but I've decided I wont be doing a marathon in 2011. Time for some 10K and half marathon attempts.
Once I get this Edinburgh marathon out of the way that is. Speaking of which :help:
I actually started running again as of yesterday morning. A run along the canal and back up the river with Foxy. I do like living in Bradford on Avon. :)
Going for a run at lunchtime and hopefully another little run this evening.
Signed up for 2011 Brighton marathon today :-D
Got the bug I see Sarah. :)
Not signed up for anything.
I have however managed 17 miles over the past three days. Rest day today and on it again tomorrow. :)
With all this moving house malarkey I haven't run for 3 weeks:(

well done! my right knee is misbehaving so i had a lazy weekend.

I have run 1/4 mile since the marathon - I can't be bothered! The longer it goes, the less likely it is.
I had forgotten what it was like to not ache all the time and have a weekend, it's great!

racing has taken over my life. Plus I'm now switching to cycling as I've a team 24-hr race in August at the 'Ring to train for. But I'm trying to still run once a week.
I ran for the first time in about 3 months tonight, 5K so im pretty happy with that, top of me foot is sore now though

Lucky sod, I'm just over a week from Edinburgh :-)
Done another 4 miles this lunchtime. Up to 34 miles for this month and boy I can feel it in my knees.
I have decided to match if not better my mileage for last year but have got off to a bit of a bad start. I am currently 121 miles behind where I was last year. I did not run for a couple of months last year so time to catch up.
Target for the year is between 576 (last years mileage) and 600 miles (last years target). With my knees, that is actually an unlikely target to achieve, but at least it gives me something to aim for. :)
Very quiet on here lately, seems the post London silence has set in.
Final medium distance run today of 12 miles, 1 week to go so taking things easy.
I dont have many sponsors though :-(, ah well.
Flymo - good luck for Sunday mate.
Sponsored, thought I had already done it.
Now I'm getting out of this thread before I feel guilty about not running!
Ran 11 miles early Saturday morning. Enjoyed it very much with the run incorporating some very nice Bradford on Avon scenery. :)
Flymo - good luck for Sunday mate.
thanks Kev, fingers crossed that 4h target can be beaten

Ibuprofen seems to fix it though, managed an ouch free five miles on hols in Ireland on Sunday which was nice.
I need to get a move on if I'm going to meet my 2010 mileage target.

Si- you enjoying the river runs?? I bet the midges are out it in full swing now ;)
Wow Sarah that is one awesome target you got there.
When running at home it's usually early in the morning. Way before the midges are up and showered. The river runs are nice. Some of it is grass track which is more pleasing on the knees, and some of the views are awesome. I guess I should take my camera out and take a few pictures next time I'm doing the river/canal route. Not sure about stopping all the time to take photo's though.
Maybe I'll ride the route and take photo's then. :)

Im still running, im averaging between 15 and 20 miles a week at the moment.
Ran home last night and it nearly killed me it was so hot? I burned off more calories too which is good?
Im in need of new running shoes already too lol, im heavy on my feet and the sole is worn a lot, they were only bought for chiristmas.
How often do you guys get through running shoes?
I am an overpronator and my left foot is much worse for it.
I think Sarah you were right, your body does tell you when its time for new shoes lol.

I guess your going to have to be content with getting round in a reasonable time rather than a great time. Look on the bright side. Err the sun will be shining and you wont get rained on. Good eh? Oh is that the time? Time to reply to another thread...

Thats good averaging is that. Burning calories is always good. Just don't forget to replace all those fluids lost with good energy.
I seem to need new trainers between 300-500 miles. Although Hoping these new Mizuno's go further. I think it depends on how you run as well as the mileage. I over pronate also and have a heavy heel strike which kills the cushioning quite quickly.

Nice one. Eviltwin and I went for a 2 miler then a dip in the sea this morning :-)
the deed is done.
Didnt hit anywhere close to my target though, probably due to the heat. 24 deg c here in Edinburgh, it was a really challenging marathon.
Finished in 4h11m according to my watch.
I am totally knackered, need a sleep and a beer. :-)
Congrats, 24c is flipping hot!!
Well done mate a PB if I'm not mistaken!
Hope the heat hasn't taken too much of a toll on you.

Back home now, jeez that was bloody hard work. This just about sums it up http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_east_and_fife/10145907.stm The Scotsman newspaper I read on the way home commented that this was the hottest weather ever recorded for Edinburgh in May.
That was the hardest run of my life, it was like running in a blast furnace.
I thought Scotland was supposed to be cold :-)
Today it probably is.

Official finish time was 4h13m05s apparently but that doesnt tally with my watch. I stopped and started the timer right on the lines.
I'm not going to argue over a minute or so given that it wasnt close enough to 4 hours anyway, ah well.
I was on target for a 3h50 up until about 15 miles but it was just too hot.
Well done, that is still a highly respectable time given the heat!!!

Really struggling at the moment with my left heel. Its tight all the time now despite stretching after running, i can barely put my foot flat on the floor when i get up in the morning.
I think i need new running shoes and fast.
I tend to go bare foot at home and i have been reading about these Kenkoh sandles that are supposed to be good for overpronators but they are exspensive for what they are, i think im just going to have to pay the money if i want to keep running.
Also how do you guys cope running in this heat, its killing me?

I know what you mean, its quite uncomfortable, but the only problem is i am running a half marathon June 13th !
Im scared that if i stop running, i will never get back to where i am now?
You wont be able to run at all if you dont give it time to recover, go see the doctors, and get new shoes.
You will recover quicker and then be able to get back to where you are now, otherwise you may just increase the injury and not be able to run the half at all.

PV. Anna is right. I paid the price for not listening to my body. My knees were giving alot of problems. I just took pain killers and kept on running. It was a good call too as while i was tending to some chores i could feel my heel and the discomfort from it just walking and stuff. I was even aware of it while i was sat down, i keep getting the odd twinge.
It wasnt made easy, as my hubby still went out running without me :-(

I know how you feel. But stick with it. And why should hubby not go running as well. Lisa and I both run at work. It's a jinx I swear. I have to watch carefully how much running I do because of my knees. I have been overdoing it. 76 miles this month and now I have to take a break. Always the same. Start getting right into it and then have to stop because of my knees. Argh.
Was supposed to be doing another 2 four mile runs this week with a ten miler planned for the weekend. I'll see if I am fit enough to get the 10 miler in at the weekend. Was hoping to get over the 100 miles in the month target. Oh well.

I have resorted to going to the gym to attempt to retain some fitness without having a hurty knee.
Sarah, when I was off running for an extended period of time because of my knees, I resorted to swimming. It really is a good way to keep the cardio going. I hate swimming though. Can't think of anything more boring.

Needle and cotton soaked in iodine. Dries it up in a couple of days. Be prepared to scream a little whilst doing it though. ;-)
THANK-YOU ALL
I have been really struggling with running (well actually not really bothering), until I stumbled across this thread being ressurected earlier!
Just back from a very hot, hard and painful 6 miles...
I had a weeks break after running my Half Marathon the other weekend.
I was chuffed when i completed it in 2 hrs and 7 mins.

Running is a bit of a sore subject for me at the moment.
Been advised to rest up by Doctor as i have either Plantar Faciitis or Heel spurs on my left foot.
Been resting it now for almost 3 weeks, so as of next week i will start up my lunchtime walks and then a bit of running once i have seen how i go.
Im waiting for my referal for Physio to come through now.
