Brill. I had forgotten how much I love running in the evening. Was a bit dark though, Eviltwin and I both had to take torches.

When I do my long run at the weekend I do it first thing in the morning. Pitch black running down country roads for 6 miles before I hit the first path. I could wear a torch but then that would scare the deer that litter the roads. It's awesome. :) I like running in the dark too.

I met an old running friend - used to run with her when I was a member of Shrewsbury AC. She works in the same building, so bumped into her in the kitchen. She didn't know why I left - basically cos after I came off I couldn't run as fast, and they wouldn't wait for me. She told mnme there's been lots of changes since then (2005) and asked me to come back.

I don't know - I like running on my own, I'm so used to it now, and I'm never sure about going back. I might go and run with them tomorrow and see how it goes. They'd be too fast for me, I guess, but will see.

You wont know unless you try it mate. I know I prefer to run on my own. So I have no intention of joining a club. They are all far too serious runners for me. I will just carry on my bimbling around.

Going by the results of the 10k race I did earlier this month, all sorts of standards join the club. There were club members way down the bottom end of the results sheets. If you want to get serious about your running then joining a club is probably the best thing you can do. You will have training partners and will get all the advice you need to improve your training techniques.

just done another 4 miles 35.01, if was a differant route to yesterdays, and i stopped for a rest. i found it a bit harder today, although it was cold, misty and drizzeling
tomorrow im either going to rest, or just do 20-30mins fartlak on the treadmill

i was going to have a chat with some runners at the parkrun, after the run, but most of them seemed a bit too.... errrr good to talk to me, i did say hello to a few, but they did not seem to want to know

although the organisers, and marshalls were realy good, and it says they meet up for coffee afer the run, so next week i will go with them

I've been awol for a while due to work and not being able to run because of it, well work is still bad, but I needed to get out just now and went for a run.

Decided that I would do a measured and timed 10k, which again due to work I missed on Sunday and it was supposed to have been a sub-45 which I was training for.

Training has been ignored and work worries have got on top of me a bit, but I tried to go for it, drizzling and cold a mixed route..........low and behold a new PB for me.

I did it in 45:12, not quite what I wanted but it was not in a race situation so I missed the adrenalin and nerves etc, but still a PB by 2 mins and 39 Secs. I still want my 10k sub-45, but it can wait until work quietens down.

Bit of a hollow achievement really though as I had to shower and come back to issues.

Keep up the great work all.

There appears to me to be a massive spread of people in the two clubs I have been to, I am sure this is the same for most clubs.

I was really nervous about being the slowest and whilst I was the ight I went with Cambridge Harriers the night I actaully made it to Dartford Road Runners I wasn't.

Due to work though I haven't made it back yet. I really want to though.

there is no local club, so its a choice of 2, there was quite a few people with Les Croupiers cardiff vests on at the parkrun, or theres Pontypridd Roadents which is closer,i plan to hang about after the next parkrun and seek advice (not this week as im out on the bike)

i did try to spark off a bit of a conversation but as you say they all seem cliquey but i think i was talking to the wrong guys, (ie the real runners that came first) there was quite a few older people with the Les Croupiers vests, maybe one of them will be better.......... one looked about 70

Same here they all turned up wearing overcoats and general OAP attire and I wondered what was going on, then I gave my predicted time of 25 mins and this little old man walks up and says "I'll try and do a 19 min today as I am still feeling a bit injured from sunday" or something similar.

They stripped off to their running gear and bang off they went, good as their word he came in just before me and I did 22 mins dead (which I have to say I was pleased with).

These people have been running all their lives where as I have only been doing it for two years now!

Just back. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

Best - it always used to be an intense workout, doing uphill speedwork. In fact, this evening's course was the same as the first time I went in 1999/2000. 15 runners, I knew 11 of them (me included) so 4 new faces. They were very welcoming. I couldn't keep up in the 8 X 800m speedwork. I ended up doing 6. I enjoyed it: and I know that if I went every week, I'd improve.

Worst - it brought back memories of what I used to be like, a running addict. I used to be able to keep up with all but the fastest. I used to have no life. And when I left I missed it like mad. But of course I did other things, and then I didn't miss it at all. If I were to improve it would take time and drive. I certainly don't have the time to run to that level - and I'm no longer sure that I have the drive either. I don't want to go back to how I was.

I didn't commit to going again, I sort of dodged the issue, but I think I will, but keep a more measured approach. Spring's coming and my bike is calling my name:D

Hovis and Ape, I was a running geek. I ran 7 days a week, rarely took a rest day, looked forward to fast 15 milers, was as lean as could be - size 30 waist. I will be brutally honest here when I say that wife & I rarely had sex, simply because I was more interested in going for a run. There, I've said it. We were headed for a divorce.

No return.

I don't run to the degree you did/do, but whenever I am finished I've always got the energy and the urge for that - Mrs Hall would no doubt prefer it if I p1ss3d off out for a run!!!:(

Stig

No, what should I do?

Ice packs on your lower shins and ankles. Followed by hot towels. Most places will only mention ice packs at intervals but using hot towels accelerates the process.

The most important thing is not to run for as long as you are in pain. You will just prolong the healing.

Went for my lunch time run today at the gym, felt great. Instead of running the machine speeds (they are so inaccurate) I've started running to the heartrate I experience on an outdoor run which seems to work better.

I started wondering about my aching knees on the few days after my weekend long runs and so did a little research on t'internet. It seems that 'runners knee' is caused by (other than the obvious act of running long distance) an imbalance in the leg muscle strength, particularly the Quadriceps that are used to keep the knees in position during running activity. So started doing some reps on the Quadriceps machine in our gym with a view to strengthening my quads and ideally reducing the pain following a run.

We'll see what happens.

last week (which wa my first) i did 27 mins, i think i could have started a bit quicker, but as it was the first time i was unsure of the pace to go at, there was a group of about 5 people that "got away" last week, i would like to keep up with them, if they turn up

what do you think is do-able

i would like sub 25 mins

My advice would be to aim to trim a little off at a time - 2 mins out of a 5k distance is a hell of a lot of time.

Perhaps 15 secs week one would be a good target?

The next couple of months will dissappear well quickly for you mate......just concentrate on the long runs and staying fit and injury free mate.

In a funny way I envy you.....I am starting to think about doing another marathon this year, just not sure which one and if I have the patience to train again for one.

i would say only do it 4-5 times a week, as you need to rest.

I've only done one and that was 22mins dead and I was knackered.

Set yourself short goals that you can reach regularly and then perhaps a bigger goal for 6 months, that way you, hopefully, get a regular boost from improvement.

Don't forget that every 3 or 4 weeks you should have a drop back week, where you train less and at a slower pace.

krhall

Run 3 nights per week mate for the first month. Your body although used to exercise needs to get used to pounding pavement, which is very different.

Run at a slowish pace too, at least until you have done a couple of weeks.

Don't worry if you have to run/walk/run, you probably won't but if you do you are going too quick.

If you are serious about it invest in some running shoes and some running socks. I recommend Hilly Twin Skins of Falke RU3. As for the shoes if you have a good running shop near you go there for advice.

Other than a potential injury, if you don't get a decent recovery you won't enjoy it as much as your legs will get progressively tired.

All that said, I gave football up about 3 years ago and played a one off Sunday league match where the proceeds went to my marathon fundraising and I was f***ed afterwards!

This is what I have suffered with. You want to be careful. Very careful. It got to the stage where I could hardly walk and in agony. After running most of my life I was very sceptical that this could be what was wrong. Especially after the hospital put me on a routine of physio for weeks that did absolutely nothing to help the situation. Eventually I stopped doing the physio, stopped doing any running of any sort. I was out of action for 3 months. Then started running again only for the pain to slowly work back. I switched my trainers to Triax support trainers. This along with a new training programme has seen a massive step forward. So long as I stick to my new programme (far less running) I should be OK. I have just received new specially made insoles from the orthotics department and am first day on them in my shoes. After a week I should be able to use them in my trainers. They (the specialists) told me my gait was different to how it used to be due to my broken pelvis and back surgery. The insoles will help concentrate the right muscles and bring my knees back into line. They have told me given the amount of running I am doing, I am looking at a 6 month programme with the insoles.

Your knee cap moves along grooves, when you have weak muscles in a particular area, the stronger muscles pull the knee out of alignment thus the pain. The most important advice I was given by the physio and the specialists was 'if it hurts, stop doing what is making it hurt'. I chose to heed that advice only partially but it seems to be working for me now.

I've just ordered some new shoes.......by 3 pairs of kayano's are looking very tired and the adidas ones are falling to pieces. Gonna try some Mizuno Wave Nirvana 4's this time.

Got them for £54.98 including delivery, reduced from £95.........see what they are like.

Ta, carefully noted.

I'm taking things as easily as I can considering I'm doing a marathon preparation. I dont intend running many marathons so just want to get around safely without injury if I can.

I've now introduced the leg gym work to my routine alongside the running so will see how things go.

Fingers crossed.

Woo hoo.

Did 12.79 miles in 1.49:38. Average 8:34 pace.

I had to stop after 9 miles and apply blister plasters. Hit the wall after 11 miles. Struggled after that. Have a sharp pain in the outside of my left knee. But hopfully that will calm down after my hot bath.

So I cracked my target of 100 miles a month.

Happy with my efforts for January. :)

or i could just do it in 25 mins straight away;)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO

not the offical time, but i timed myself at 25.09

2 mins faster than last week.

the first KM has hard, as it was so cold, it was hard to breath, but i passed the

1k marker at 5.03
then pretty much kept that pace

which i will struggle to beat, i think

 Awesome Hovis, I bet you have the biggest smile :D. Just think a few weeks ago you were just running on the treadmill and apprehensive about running on the road. There is no stopping you now.

Did you beat that group of 6?

Ey up guys, need your help, the wife wants to take up running and has got a place in one of those 'race for life' events in july, so a while back I found a site whereby you input your details of your running style, weight, whether you needed cushioning etc and it gave you a list of possible shoes, now I cant for the life of me find it, any ideas ? we are going to go a specialist shop for the shoes just wanted a bit of info for her before we go.
Thanks

Stewie - 85% of the population over-pronate, so it is likely that she does too. As Hovis says go to a proper running shop though and get a few pairs on and some expert advice.

Buy 2 or 3 pairs of decent running socks too matem they will make all the difference.

Oh and wish her the very best.......

Can I just add, don't bother buying more pairs of one type of trainer until you have tested them good and proper. Last thing you need is to be spending £150 quid on 4 sets of trainers all of which will give you blisters or make your feet hurt. You want to have about 50 miles wear in them before you go out buying more.

I just meant get a few pairs on to try.....IMO, unless you are running 30+ miles a week then one pair is probably adequate anyway.
