Hello runners...
I dont know what came over me, but I agreed with Liz I would do The Great South Run on October 28th, ( 10 miles )
I've been out bashing the pavements, and my longest run so far is 7.07 miles which I did in 1hr 15 minutes.
I've got a little over a month to go, any tips to get me that last few miles to my target. I'd like to do it sub two hrs.
I've joined the local running club and I'm gong out 3 times a week.
Two shorter runs of 5 - 6 miles and then a longer run of 7 ish.
I'm making sure I have rest days in between my runs to.
Found my motivation lacking a little bit at the moment so need a kick up the ass...
You're doing the right thing of running three times a week and to be honest, on the day you'll do the 10 miles easy if you can already to 7ish. However I would suggest trying to get some ten mile runs in in the mean time, but I would suggest not planning them. i.e. go out and do your 7ish miles and then at the end, ask yourself if today's the day. If it is, just keep going. This is how I've always made gains as I hate planning to go further. Makes the start of a run so much more difficult.
The other thing that helped me was to quit running with headphones. I find it much easier now just getting lost in my thoughts and before you know it, the miles have racked up.
And if you're a bit bored, find some nice new routes to do. Bing Maps have the OS maps available to find some nice local public footpaths and bridleways etc so a bit of trail running might spark you're interest.
Good luck :)

Did the Great North Run last week, dragged the girlfriend round in under 2 hours (1hr57), service with a smile, I ran off for drinks, refreshments etc returning them to her and kept her pace going. On the plus side it meant I could stop at the real ale station and catch her up too! A great atmosphere.
Thought I would dig up this old thread.
Ran a half marathon at the weekend. Did very minimal training for it, I wasn't fussed on getting a decent time so I plodded along just trying to get to the finish.
After about 10 miles my hamstrings were in agony but I powered through and made it to the end in just over two and a half hours. I did however have to stop for a wee 4 times!!! And I spotted my mate along the route and had a chat to him for 10 minutes. Without the stops I think I'd have been a about 2:10.
Now I really don't like running, I had no motivation to train for this event but I feel a bit like I've let myself down by signing up for something and not making an effort so I've decided to do another one and do it properly this time.
Looking to do another half marathon at the end of the summer which gives me 12-16 weeks to train. I'd love to hit a 90 minute time but 1:45 is a more realistic figure.
If there are any runners still on here could anyone recommend a training plan to help get my time down?
Cheers
I used the intermediate plan on the Bupa website and did a 1:50:02. Just search 'Bupa half marathon plan' however all the plans you'll find are quite similar. Good luck!

I'll have to keep an eye on this thread, never knew it was there!
I've been running for the last year and a half. Mostly trail running as I prefer it and there's no shortage of off road routes here. I do like parkrun though and it's what got me started in the first place. Not really into competing so I guess that makes me a fun runner. Currently working towards a sub 23 minute 5k at parkrun. Down to 23m26s at the moment. I always run with the dog caniX fashion too.

So, anyone else on parkrun tomorrow then? If so tell us where and how it went.

Damn! No parkrun. Woke with a horrible chesty cough and figurd it was probably prudent not to run for a day or two till it clears.

parkrun yesterday and got someone to pace me. Wasn't going for a pb, just looking for about 23.40 but made 23.29, just 3 seconds off my pb!
