I measure the distance I do on google maps (and keep a record on my google calendar). Haven't been timing myself though.

I've had 3 mcdonalds in 3 days - gives you an idea of how healthy I currently am ;)
that's no excuse!
I ate a whole malt loaf on Sunday morning then went out and did 17 miles, followed by a lunchtime roast and a kebab for dinner!!!
That's one of the reasons I do run, I can now eat all the crap that was making me fat before with any weight gain!
Mind you my 17 mile run burnt about 2500 calories according to my watch, which could have meant serious weight loss, but I took it to mean that I was allowed 5000 calories for the day.

Man-Flu has got the better of me this week and I haven't been able to run since Sunday. Not exactly the ideal preparation I needed for the Maidstone Half-Marathon this Sunday!!!!

As long as it clears up before then, it can be a blessing in disguise. Forces you to rest.
You can't really make yourself any fitter in one week, but you can injure yourself or wear yourself down. Most people do too much in the final week.
Here's hoping it clears up in time.[-o<
I must admit I feel rough, but my legs aren't aching for the first time in months!
Well I was still feeling a bit ropey this morning, mainly my chest and also not helped by a large doner and chips last night whilst watching the rugby. Still I had already paid so decided to go and even just getting round would be cool.
Maidstone is clearly more mountainous than the himalayas!!!!! I felt like cack after about 3 miles, but the thought of a burger at the end just about kept me going.
I managed a PB too, not too sure how, but knocked 11:40 off of my previous best of 1:57:59, so my new PB is 1:46:19.............
This is clear proof that lack of ability doesn't stop you if you are determined! I have now recovered enough to be able to type this.
I think the 2 lucozades, large Duo Mars Bar, Wheat Crunchies, Roast Dinner, Cheese on Toast, Ice Cream and a crunch corner helped.......................still didn't find a burger (YET)!

My housemate just ran a half marathon in a 'dissapointing' 1.23!
Did a terrific hilly 12 miler around Falmouth this weekend (we were there visiting MIL). Falmouth is remarkable in that there isn't a flat street in the town. Last long run before next weekend's race. Very excited!
I know you've all missed me for best part of a week. I've been to:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a127/Sythree/IMG_0509.jpg
well not exactly, I was in Arlington, Virginia - which is across the river.
Sunday, I was running in the US Marine Corps marathon. Starts in Arlington, crosses into DC, meanders round the town, and then across back into Arlington to finish by the Iwo Jima monument. I finished in 3.48.20. I was very pleased with that. As it's sponsored by the military, there are a lot of military people running, and also a lot of shirts saying 'In honor of [name]. I asked one man who was wearing a shirt 'In honor of L/Cpl Andrew Patton' if he was related to him. He said 'he was my son'. I felt so humbled.
I have a whopping great medal - it's really nice, not your average cheapo nasty plastic rubbish. I had a terrific time too, it's by far the best marathon I've run in terms of organisation, route, and friendly runners. I want to go back next year!

Nice one Ed ... I'm impressed.
I did my one and only triathlon a few years ago, all the training I did for it put me off exercise for a long while .... so I admire anyone who can keep their drive even after a tough one!

Ed,
See my post in this other thread (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=88422&page=4)for a list of links.
To recap, there's a quite a few different 'systems' of running that are similar. Basically mid-foot striking, high turnover. I've looked at the literature & DVDs for quite a few, but not for chi running so I can't comment there. Out of the ones I've looked at, Ken Mierke's Evolution Running was the best.
The one thing that put me off the Chi running, was this pseudo mystical Tai Chi stuff. When the actual effective bio-mechanics is described by other people without all the Woo.

I ran a 1/2 marathon last spring - during the training I started (again) to suffer from the "runners knee". I've now changed the sneakers a couple of times and use special shoe soles that correct my stepping but with limited success... Last time it got so bad that walking was a real pain for a week after the run. That is one thing that has prevented me of even seriously considering of running longer distances.
I now found some streching exercises that seem to help somewhat and also I'm starting to get used to the pain... Maybe I should just try to get more muscle to the legs.
Well done Ed, never actually done a full marathon, but did a few half marathons in the eighties, Reading, Cumnock and horncastle I think, plus a load of ten milers etc. I think you,ve done really well mate :smt023

It hurts to walk but I can run ok, but then I stop and it hurts like hell.

Hi Krhall,
Sure - the reason is that the ends of the muscle run on the outside of the knee get friction while running which eventually (after some miles) irritate the ligaments so that they get "infected".
A spoke to a doctor about that, and he said that a good way to deal with is to take some painkillers that also relief the infection. Burana 1200mg etc should help.. Just that I don't eat painkillers normally so my stomach dislikes the treatment.
But symptons are a "cutting" pain on the outside of the knee while. Worst when going down stairs etc..

I've just had exactly this for the last week! Felt it a little when I ran last Monday but thought it might just be the cold or something, ran again on the Wednesday and it hurt a little to begin with and got better, but then the next day it was killing me, especially whilst walking down stairs. So I've been resting for the last week and I still feel it a bit now on occasion :(
Doing my head in, I suppose I should recover fully before risking aggravating it again, and if it comes back I need to look at why.
I think that mine might have been caused by my recent change of shoes? Although they are really comfortable they do not offer quite as much stability from over-pronation as my other shoes which I have been using.
Mine does not hurt when sitting down only when walking, isn't any worse going down stairs either. I have tried rest (well as much as you can working full time and two young kids) ice and elevation. I have also been using ibuprofen all to no avail.

I prefer running outside too, but living in a city sucks ass for that, especially in winter! mmmmmmmmm diesel.....
Full membership is £55/month, thats all in, any time, and club in the country with no contract. It's a fair whack if you don't use it, but I'm managing 5-6 times a week at the mo. Fitness first was rotten, I couldn't get motivated in there, David LLoyd is brilliant :)
They're introducing a technogym system next month - a small rfid chip that registers with the machine and sets it up with the details of your last workout. You can then access all this data to see how you're doing as well as not having to remember your setting! man I'm a nerd :smt039
Well done g2d!!

Well done all u running lot. When I was at school we had an amazing x-country course, I got up to doing 5miles 3x a week and everyday during exams to keep my stress levels down. Havent run for years, just about to buy myself a pair of lush new running shoes and get back to it, miss the solitude and the brilliant feeling of acheievement. Not to mention being able to walk places without sweating!

It's not in case I get lost!! It's not a sat nav device anyway. I'm more interested in precise distance, elevation, pace, heart rate, am I running efficiently, that sort of info.

Yes, it's a bit of a toy. But it is interesting. I found two major uses for it : Running an unplanned route and Learning to hold a consistent pace.
I'm not interested in heart rate zone training, but I imagine it works fine for that.
Having said that, I only bought it when the price jumped down from £170 to £135.
I too use one and won't run without it.

All my enthusiasm is 'cos mine is still broken. I have to get the knee as strong as possible, cruciate reconstruction op is now booked for the 6th December.
Just recovering from a mediate ligament injury - have only manged 2 lots of two miles in the last 3 weeks.............not good for my training.
Going to try a 10k tomorrow evening and see how the injury feels.
On the bright side though I have finally seen the light and bought a pair of Asics 2120 GT's and have to say only done 2 miles in them but the feel great.

1. Owwwww
2. Same shoes as mine. They're great. I have some Mizuno Wave things which I hate but I'm too mean to throw them out. Wearing them and the 2120s back to back is such a revelation.
After fully resting my legs I'm glad to say that all traces of the pain I was feeling before have gone. I took a near two week break, and gradually built back up, only ran just over a mile the first time, but now I'm back to it, and feel better than I have for some time, although I strained a calf the other day. Changed shoes too, maybe that's helped. Still, happy as the proverbial Larry.
I had a sports massage and quite a break and think it really helped. I think that my injury was caused in part by my adidas trainers not offering enough pronation support, so they went back to the shop and the 2120s came home with me.

Google Map has a handy distance measuring feature in My Maps that can help plan your route.
How do you do this then? I've put in way points for my route but I can't get it to join them together into a route and tell me how far it is. Am I expecting too much?! :D
Blimey - managed a 2 mile run last night including all my broken bits, didn't feel great though. However I have the 13th April in sight now so need to get back on the road.

Had a few weeks of grottiness and the doldrums, so getting back into it to blow away the cobwebs. It's amazing how much mucus one produces when one starts exercise after a break...

Go to Google Maps- choose the My Maps tab then the option should appear for Distance Measuring Tool.
Choose your preferred units and start clicking away on your map. Each new waypoint you click adds to the measurement distance. There's also an undo feature in case your clicking goes awry.

Aw Kev. Not nice to run with broken bones. Have you got the OK from your GP - it would be a mistake to make the breaks worse.
As they are in my hands, they are ok as long as I leave the contraption on........
I managed 4 miles in a very hot and sweaty 36 mins, which I suppose I am quite happy with and under the circumstances is the best I could've hoped for.
The first 3 miles were hell, the last mile felt OK although the thought of the shower might have helped that a bit!!!!
Is this dedication or what - Just had a monster day at work from 8ish to 10, got home, changed and then out for a 4 mile run in the freezing night air!!!
Managed it in 33:52 and actually felt pretty good - not sure that kind of dedication will be so forthcoming again.

Yes loads. Will scrawl something and stick it on here:D
But main one is - 26.2 is a long way and you must be prepared mentally. You must be able to keep going no matter what, when the physical pain tells you to stop the mental toughness needs to scream 'no'.

Where's your 'wall'?
The wall is about 18 miles isn't it, where most peoples glycogen stores run out as the body can only store enough for that distance???
Can that be combatted by carb gels etc.
I have done a 17 miler a couple of times and think that I could've gone further or does it just come on you all of a sudden?
gettin2dizzy
12-12-07, 11:46 AM
Driving 18 miles is pretty hard work
I have never hit 'the wall'. The critical thing is to drink enough and to make it an energy drink so that you have enough carbs. You don't need to take out a mortgage to buy powerade/gatorade although lots of people swear by the stuff. If I'm going long, I plan the route to pass a shop - usually the one at Montford Bridge, near the AR06 campsite in fact - and bring some money to buy a carton of strawberry Ribena. I generally stop long enough to drink the lot in moderate sized sips, as I don't like running with fluid sloshing around. And I try to have a drink no less frequently than once every 6 - 7 miles but sometimes that's difficult. My usual long run is 6 miles from home to Montford Bridge, buy a drink, 3 miles on to Nesscliffe and turn round back to Montford Bridge, buy a drink, and then home, usually by a longer route.
Kev, you probably could go longer than 17. Don't overdo it though!! - strecth it out bit by bit. And be sure to drink enough.
Just back form another 5 miles and feel ok. It is the first week I have run consequtively for almost 2 months.
