View Full Version : The running thread!
after watching it yesterday, im tempted too
well done
Ive given up, tried 3 times and been rejected, even let them keep the entry money in the hope of being picked for other 1000 or so places, ended up with 3 t shirts and no entry ;)
how many applay, and how many do they limit to?
just wondering
About 150,000 - 200,000 and of that about 35,000 run the marathon.
Only about 750,000 people have run it since it started.
Was just wondering if anyone could recommend me a decent running GPS, its the wife's birthday in July and was thinking of getting her a nice one, not sure what she might need so any suggestions will be gratefully received
thanks

I keep getting this:

I have a Garmin forerunner 305 and a 405, both very good. The 405 the newer version and is smaller and more watch like. I personally prefer the 305.

Hope this helps.
ED - go to runnersworld.co.uk and sign up for Abingdon first!

Thanks, Ill check em out :)
I want a garmin Forerunner 305 - cheapest UK price is Amazon at just shy of 3150. However ebay brings up a US based seller - in GBP the price is £118 - £119. Is it reliable?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290310428940&_trksid=p2759.l1259
Edit - just seen, you have to pay postage plus whatever import duty etc so probably same as Amazon, all told.
ED - put a post on fetch see if anyone has upgraded and wants to sell one.
Depending on what you want it to do a 205 might be ok.
ah thats better, just this minute got home and parked my ar$e in a chair :-)
Well, that was one of the most difficult, emotional, exciting, rewarding things I have ever done in my life. An incredible atmosphere but a very very long way.
was 12mins outside my target time but given the heat and the fact it was my first time I'm honestly not that bothered about that. Feels amazing to train for so long for something and to then acheive it, it really only hit me properly at about 13 miles in when I thought to myself "holy carp, I'm actually running the marathon".
WIll post a little more once I've had a cuppa.
website let me sign in this time so am in the ballot!

Pah. You'd think they'd get a decent server.

first day back at work today :-) feeling a little stiff today but nothing major.
its my first real chance to think about how my run went. First time ever that I've run with another person, let alone 30,000 of them! so it was a little strange to say the least.
I ran a good constant pace until about 14 miles when I began to slow a little, I think mainly due to the heat. I was using gels and Lucozade sport on my planned schedule but the difference came at mile 23 when I attempted to eat another energy bar for my final boost to the finish. I simply couldnt stomach another and thought that if I bite into it I'll throw up.
Just received an email......"Dear Flymo, Thank you for entering the ballot for the 2010 Virgin London Marathon......." Damn, couldnt resist!
Yeah I just got one of those emails too, probably wont get in though, when you back ourt running again ?

Wont be running at all for the remainder of this week. Plenty of rest until next week. Might venture out for a couple of short distance jogs after that and get back in slowly.
Ive just entered a 10k in September in Delamare, plus toying with the idea of a half marathon in october in warrington, this one : http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/events/viewevent.asp?sp=&v=6&EN=49003
bet you,re still a bit sore though
Well done flymo!
I still haven't managed to overcome my recent attack of the CBAs :-( I have however entered the MK Half Marathon in July.
If I can pass my M$ exam next Tuesday then I will look to start a proper training program for the half'.

I like the sound of that, would like to do a couple of half marathons in the year. Warrington is quite close to me too.

Excellent, there's nothing like a goal to get you out there training.
this one looks interesting too, a nice 10K run that goes through the Mersey Tunnel. Passes the end of my road and finishes less than 500m away!

Yeah, just checked it out at runners world, looks not bad, not committing to too much yet till I see how my knees/achilles stands up over the next couple of months though
I'm regretting doing 14 miles this morning in the heat!
Going up and down a ladder decorating no is really starting to hurt!!!!!!OUCH!

Entry fee is a bit high. But I'd like to do this, will check diary.

Its the Kingsway tunnel running between Liverpool and Wallasey.
I'd love to do it. Mind, that tunnel is so boring, not exactly great scenery:D

just done 5 miles in the rain, which i quite enjoyed, thats 17 miles so far this week

:-), yeah that would work well in a tunnel.
It interests me more for the unusual surroundings, but the tunnel section is only for a mile or so. If I wanted scenery I can get that for free at the bottom of my road.
Think I might enter this. Its likely to be a struggle on the climb back up the second half of the tunnel, its pretty steep for a long distance.

I love running in the rain, it washes memories off the sidewalk of life, according to Woody Allen
I'm itching to get out and exercise again but I'm forcing myself to sit still for a week to recover fully. Back out next week though to get a few miles done.
I've barely done any running this year :-( Stupid shin splints or wahtever it was/is.
Trying to get back into it so did a mile and a half yesterday morning and will build back up to where is was.
And because I've missed out on a race or two I thought I'd do a sponsored walk instead. One of the midnight, 13 mile, women only ones. I've never walked that far in one go, I've never tried so I have no idea if it's going to be a challenge.

I got a new pair of trainers (asics something or other) and went for my longest run yet. one hour and 3 minutes!! Reckon that was around 6 miles!! Perhaps the half marathon in May is doable after all!

6 miles and a half marathon are a gulf apart. Don't rush it.
Have been on recovery week this week so no running. Will be going for a 10 mile run tomorrow. He says hopefully.

Take it easy....
What's with the new pan handle?
I went out with the club last night and hurt my ankle, didn't listen to my own advice and ran lunchtime. Now I'm really injured......

dude you gotta be careful if you're about to start marathon training, last thing you need now is an injury

Serves you right:rolleyes:
Dammit. Not a good start to a marathon career;)
Yeah, you need to take it easy and play it safe like I did by errr.....racing my bike the week before the marathon :-)
A weekned of RICE it is then, that'll please Mrs.H then!!!
not even starting marathon training until 15th June luckily, my first day Monday 15th is a rest day - Excellent!
Just got Abingdon confirmation through the post, so I'm one of the 1100 in there.
ED - do you apply in the end?

Good man, does it feel good to have a target again? :-)
Yes mate, I've been doing a lot of irregular running recently so a focus will be great.
Sub-4 is the target, so that would mean shaving a mere 34 minutes off my target.
Have a 10k I might do on 17th May, but other than that just going to try and put some base mileage down, only managed 117 in April.
How are your legs feeling now Flymo?

Totally back to normal already, I guess the training paid off in that respect. I'm forcing myself to stay away from my trainers until Tuesday :-)
Might well do that Liverpool Tunnel 10K at the end of this month, its about the right time away to give me time to train up slowly without over doing it. A nice little target to aim for will help me avoid the post marathon blues.
Did you enjoy the day?
Both me and the missus have applied for London next year. I'm hoping to crack 4 hours in Abingdon so that I can enjoy London if we both get in and run at her pace.
If I am still running in the later part of 2010, I'm going to do New York.

Did I enjoy it? It was awesome, honestly one of the most amazing days of my life I have to say. Its really been a life changing experience that I will never forget, very very special.
I was a total novice at it though, I think I prepared well and was pretty chuffed to finish in 4h 12m in that heat for my first marathon. I honestly think I can do sub 4h, I managed 20 miles in training at dead on 4h pace so its not that big a leap to do it in a marathon.
There are a few things I would change about my race plan though, particularly fuelling during the race. I think I should have held off longer before starting on my gels. I couldnt stomach an energy bar at mile 19 and I think I suffered because of it. It was a fantastic day though and a great learning experience.
i think i just got another PB on the 5k parkrun, just waiting for the offical results, i think i did it in 24.20 (7½ min mileing?)
so thats 20miles i have done this week
but more importantly, i beat my freind.
who has done over 100 marathans, and runs about 60 miles a week, we started off together, and i pulled away, and i thought im going to beat him, he cought me at about 3km, and over took me, but i was only just behind him, we stuck together for the last 2k* and i sprinted the last 100 meters
*he kept looking back and slowing down for me, and he let me beat him, plus he said he was taking it easy, as he has a marathan tomorrow
plus i have joined a running club, well not quite yet, but im going trainning with them on thursday, which is a 5,7 or 10 mile run, i was going to do the 5mile, but he said not many do that, so i may do the 7, im worried about getting left behind, but he said i wont?
The club I have just joined have a wide range of abilities - You will be suprised mate and not last by a long way.
grrrrrrrrrrrr
i was 10 seconds off a PB

Nice one Hovis, what are your split times looking like? Are you starting off fast and slowing over the distance or keeping a constant pace throughout?
I've just been out for my first run since the marathon, what a great feeling! My legs still work and I didnt fall on my face after 100 metres :-)
Managed 3 miles in 23m51s and then a good 10 minute cool down with stretches. Just going to churn out a few short distance runs this week before I plan out where I'm going next.
Right, thats me entered for the Liverpool 10K tunnel run - 31st May. Something to focus on for a few weeks while I get back into my stride :-)
Only doing all these runs because I'm running low on t-shirts....
Talking of PB's. Today I did my 4.12 mile run in 28:37. Fastest I have ever done it and broke the 7 minute mile again. :)

.
pretty much about the same, just under 5 mins per km
I did two ~3.5 mile runs over the bank holiday. They were the first runs in a number of weeks. As importantly the exam is taken and passed, so now I'm going to look up a half' training plan and try to follow it.
i am joining a running club tonight, and trainning is either 5, 7, or 10 mile run, i think i will do the 7mile.
i have never run with anyone before, and to be honest, i quite like running alone, with my mp3 player.
im not sure if i will like the "group" running,
but we will see?

I am pretty much the same as you, running on my own and challenging myself without the need to either try to catch up or have to wait for anyone. But being a part of a club is without a doubt going to help you improve your running massively. I personally am happy where I am so have no interest in joining a club. Good luck with it.
Im running 3 times a week now, used to run a lot, but constant knee or achilles trouble eventually did for me, Im thinking of entering a half marathon in October , will give me something to aim for

Im nowhere near those kind of mileages yet, prob 9 - 10 miles a week but its just building up, I run with the wife as well and she does this run walk thing which has kinda helped me to build up a bit of stamina, never actually done that before but it seems to work and with her being out of breath as well I dont get told off as much :D

Dear Running Thread,
Long time reader, first time poster. I ran for the first time about 3 weeks ago, after a hard day winding locks I ran about 600m or something. Everything seemed fine. The next day my right knee was in agony everytime I put weight on it. The pain continued for about 3 days, with me taking it easy and it slowly got better. Now 3 weeks later I thought I'd try jogging to lose weight, and about 1/2 a mile into it the knee pain came back. I tried again today and I got the knee pain after 100 yards :(. It hurts really internally inside my right knee, it feel like a compressiony thing rather than muscle or ligament damage I think. I haven't ever really run much, played a bit of squash and cycled but I'm not majorly fit.
Is this going to go away, or do I need a lot more than 3 weeks rest to get over it? What has gone wrong do you think? I really want to be able to run, I am usually quite able bodied, I'm only 28!
Cheers,
Nick

If you are not used to running you'll need to ease in slowly and condition your body to do it. Why not start with some fast paced walks to get some strength and wake up those muscles that you've not used for a while.
Then take it real easy and do some short slow paced runs when you feel you are ready. The other thing that is really important is warming up and stretching, particularly if you are new to running.
Stick with it though, it can be a lot of fun.
Welcome to the thread by the way :-)
Like flymo says - take it easy and go get some proper running shoes fitted.
We all start out too quickly and blow up and hurt, which normally means you don't go out again. Slow down until the point where it feels you are going too slow, that's the speed you should run at until your body has started to adapt to the change that you are putting it through.
Find a decent (flat-ish) route of about 1.5 to 2 miles and see how far you can make it round without stopping at the pace above and use this as your first milestone, getting past the last point at which you stopped each time. In under a month you'll have the route cracked and will be thinking about which 10k should be your first.
Oh and you WILL lose weight, even if you eat like a horse! I have lost about 2 stone in 2 years and I eat far more than I ever did. I'm still a fat little sod though!
I get a lot from running as every mile, even after two and a half years, still feels like a massive achievement. Especially when I look back at my first 2 mile route and remember how I used to stop 8 or more times when I first did it.
Prepare to get hooked and to swap your wardrobe out for either running gear and shoes or comfy post run clothes - never thought it would happen but it did. All you can see now is Nike and Ron Hill clothing where once Armani clothes stood.
Welcome to the thread and good luck mate.

That all sounds really good and promising guys, thanks. Any advice on the injury though? I already can tell that basically I think I will have to rest it for aaaages before it will actually get better. Its not the fitness that is holding me back at the moment, its the knee injury :(.
I'm no injury expert, but RICE should help.
Rest Ice Compress Elevate, if you can try to put a pack of peas on it for 15-20 mins 4 times a day, and wear a relatively tight knee support thing as the compression increases the blood flow.
After that invest in some shoes as you will find that they will lessen the impact felt through your knees. You would be amazed at how much difference proper shoes and socks will make.
Have a read of this, it is quite a useful read and gives you an idea of why your legs might (MIGHT) be hurting. http://www.nbwebexpress.com/achieve_more/running_gait.asp
If you are really worried about it get it checked out.

well, i must admit i quite enjoyed it
it was a mixture of roads, feilds, cycle tracks, gravel and realy uneven paths, with a few hills thrown in............... in the rain.
7.5 miles in 65mins
i think i could have done it a bit faster, but i got talking to a group of 3 so just stuck with them.
im defantly doing it next week.
and my plan to do my first ½ marathan cardiff oct, has changed, to birmigham to wolverhampton in july, along the canel

There is no getting around it. The only way it is going to get better is rest. The only other option is surgery. Seeing as you do not actually know what the injury is, I suggest you pay a visit to your GP. I had issues with my knees which took me out of action for around 8 months or so. I also ended up on a strict course of physio and now wear orthotic insoles. I would have known non of this had I not gone to the GP.
I just completed another 4 mile run. It's actually 4.12 miles. I did it in 28:02. An average of 6:48 minute miles. :D I even surprised myself. :o
Not sure what is going on here. I completed the same run again today only did it in reverse which is more difficult as there are more up hill bits. I did it in 28:41 which is again less than 7 minute mile pace. Rest day tomorrow. :(
did a 5 miler today got half way through and got really bad stitch which ****ed me up a bit but apart from that it's not going too bad.
I embarked on a slow 6 miler last night and had to pull out after only 3 miles, my legs were really tight and didn't feel right, so for once I listened to what the body was saying and went home. Must have been down to the club handicap the night before as I proper went for it.
im running with a club again tonight 7.5 miles
which will take my weekly target up to 20 miles again.
as i have a ½ marathan in july, im thinking i need to build on distance, as im only doing 7 miles at a time.
im hoping to get it up to at least 10 miles, and hope the adrenerlin will kick in for the marathan
run further mate - 3.1 miles after 10 is still a very long way.

It's in July so you have a good few weeks to get up to at least 12, the thing is if you are in unknown territory after 10 miles and its warm and your are starting to ache mentally it will be a real challenge.
Where as if you know you can do the distance then you can relax a bit more and enjoy it.
If that makes sense.

this rings a bell...I thought, I've run 20 miles before so another 6 cant be that bad :-) how wrong I was.
For a half marathon I would try and do the full distance beforehand but leave yourself some time to taper off towards the end and rest the week before.

yup.
i did not plan to do one in july (wolverhampton to birmigham, along the canel) but a few mates or doing it, so i probably will.
i was planning on cardiff in oct being my first
ok cheers.
i plan on just doing a few miles the week before, so i will try to get the miles up.
as i said i did not plan for july, but i think its do-able
Hmm. Reading some of the last comments with interest. My half is in July. I've not done more than 8.5m and then only once. I don't intend to do the full distance before the day. For me it would take away the challenge\satisfaction\motivation.
Did a 3.5m Tuesday evening. Felt like hard work and the time reflected that. Looking to increase my frequency how and hope that I get a little improvement in fitness and condition leading to it becoming a bit easier.

I would recommend that you do at least 10 miles, unless you are totally confident that you can do full distance. I used to have the odd tough day but I think that was mainly down to diet before I started eating more selectively before my longer runs.
One thing is for sure though, going from say 7 miles up to 13 is a big jump if you are not used to it, it is almost double after all.
Take a look at the training advice found here http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/index.htm. Depending on your ability the advice varies. A novice should typically run as far as 10 miles in training for a half marathon.
I was planning on having done at least a 10 mile run. I don't want to do full distance though.
I thought at the time that some of the runs apparently difficulty may well have come from bad eating before hand. Can I ask what sort of things you learned about eating before running?
I will take a look at the link. I have already looked at several. They mostly seem to suggest running 3\4 times a week with some interval, a long run, a short run just for miles and then another or somethign else (pilates to cycling). I want to run at least twice a week, hopefully 3. Will aim to slowly increase my long run then do shortish stuff for the other one or two.

I was following a fairly strict plan of 4 runs a week, 3 during midweek and a long on Saturday. For diet, there are loads of opinions as to what you should eat and you'll have your own preferences. Bottom line is that you'll benefit from being well loaded up on carbohydrates before a run and followed by protein within two hours of finishing a long run.
I would normally eat something like Pasta, potatoes etc about 1.5/2 hours before a long run. Also get yourself hydrated before you leave. That way you are topping up when you run rather than fuelling up in the first place.
i dont think you need to worry about carbo gels or anything for 13 miles, just make sure that you are fully fuelled before you leave. A couple of bananas just before setting off will do you no harm either.
I was totally surprised the difference it made to my runs by eating properly before and after. The protein afterwards is to aid muscle recovery, I chose a tin of tuna mixed with sweetcorn and mayo, simple and quick to make but allows you to recover very quickly. I was out and about less then 3 hours after the marathon with this approach.

We all have tough days mate, I have done 500+ miles since Jan and last night had to cut short because I just didn't have the run I planned in me.
Eating and Drinking properly would really help me too, but I'm rubbish at it. Thankfully a large part of my diet is pasta based so that helps. As for protein straight after a run I neck a bottle of Yazoo or Rego (recovery Drink) doing that within 20 mins of a run helps recovery.
Going to try a club run tonight though.

Never tried these, might give them a go. I've entered the Liverpool Tunnel 10K at the end of this month so looking forward to that.
I have given up on long distances. My knees are never going to allow me to do it. I have been concentrating on short distances and getting my times down.
I did a 3.5 mile run today with a 6:43 mile average. 6 miles seems to be about the maximum distance I can achieve and only then if I take rest days before and after. I am looking to build up and do the whole 6 miles in less than 42 minutes. My ultimate goal is to do a 10k in less than 40 minutes.
Stig I don't know your background but I'd like to share one thing I (over)heard in the gym the other day. The bloke talking was a serious tri-athlete. His comments were along the lines that when people start running their cardio improves far quicker than their bodies ability to cope with the stresses and strains. I might be missing the point badly here but the gist of what he went on to say is that too often people try to do too much too quickly because they think they can. Whilst their heart and lungs etc can, tendons, muscles etc need more time than you realise to get used and stronger for running etc. So don't give up all hope. It might just take a time.
flymo (&kr') - thanks for the comments on food. The most interesting bits for me were the food stuff (carbs) and timing. I eat too soon before doing out. I'm used to bracketing my gym sessions with protein (variously a tin of tuna, cottage cheese or a shake) so I already do that post run.
did a nice 7.5 miles with the running club again, 65 mins
I went with the club tonight and we played "it" or "tag" whatever you like to call it in the car park for 20 mins as a warm up, I can't imagine what people going past though of a load of 20 - 70 year olds playing that........then we did some drills, followed by running up the stair or a bridge one step at a time, down the slope then two steps at a time, back down and then 3 steps at a time x 3. Plus some other crazy stuff followed by 1min intervals for 30 mins.
What a great night.

You enjoyed so much you said it twice. For me that is all way to serious. I run just for me and am happy with my own progress. :)

i just got a new pair of saucony (£80)
i went to a running shop, and he recomended a few pairs, after watching me run
i chose the saucony, as they felt the best, and i have had saucony the last 3 times (although this is the 1st time i went to a specialist) normaly just get them off the net and pay half the price
anywho, after about 3 miles i had to stop, as it felt like there was a 5p coin under my left ball of my foot, after a bit of ajust ment, it was ok, for about a mile. i then had to remove the shoe again.
i also got a new pair of 1000 mile socks.
im not a happy bunny

I'm trying to get into it again having had a couple of weeks off up to and after an exam.
I'm trying to adopt a 'little and often' approach but I obviously over did it last week and had shin pains for a few days. Fortunately only for a few days and I was able to go out last night (only about 2 miles) and am not suffering today.
It's gone back to seeming like terribly hard work. I think I need to get my ipod charged and some decent playlists sorted - and get out there and do as much (within reason) as I can.
anyone doing the black country half?
4th july wolves to brum alonng the canel.
i did plan to do cardiff in october as my first, but now plan to do this............... I THINK
A basically flat route following the towpath alongside the canals that connect the two Cities. Arguably, it is a downhill route with the only "lumps" being the locks and bridges that cross intersections. These "lumps" do get more frequent towards the latter stages of the run, making it perhaps a little tougher than it may seem. The 360yard long tunnel at Coseley is an "entertaining" feature enjoyed by some, hated by others but remembered by all. Completely off road and traffic free. You should be aware that the surface varies from well tended gravel paths and brick paving to un-kept surfaces - largely what you might encounter on any off road run.
