View Full Version : The running thread!
I have just got back from a cold and wet 10.12 mile run, it was hard work as the hills at the end got me , but im pleased i did it. Only another 3 miles extra and i know im ok to do my half marathon in June!
Time for a soak in a hot bubble bath and my book now i think!
Nice one, sounds like you'd be fine to do a half marathon next weekend. By June, it'll be a piece of cake :-D
Running againas the cold has gone :) Only 50 mins this morning, went fine, 2.5 hour LSR tomorrow, it could be wet....
Hooray :-D
My evil blisters are preventing me from running today so I'm gonna go for a swim instead I think.

Sore knee this morning. :-(
If it hurts rest it...for once I took my own advice and have spent 10 days side-lined due to niggles.
So by the time I was at the start line for the Tunbridge Wells Half, for my return to running, today I was bouncing.
Not so at the end though!
Have out a big dent in my fetch position and my London training, but my legs feel a bit less niggly and I spent last weekend with the kids so its all good.
At least I got a PB today despite the weather, streams (roads) and the bloody long steep hills!

wow!
I had to drag myself out the house today but glad I did. Ran a 12 miler at good pace and felt strong to the end. This programme I'm following really seems to be working.
A tough week next week, the weekly distance rises significantly.
Blisters prevented a LSR this weekend so I went for a swim instead yesterday. Did a mile at a reaonable pace (for me) and I can feel it today :-D

I have invested in a knee strap to help with the sore knee. I am an overpronator and i think its because of this problem that i have a sore left knee.
I have done some reading on it and it looks like thats why its sore :-(
I will give it a try and see how it goes.
I rested it all day yesterday and its gym night tonight with no impact excersises so i think i should be ok. I am going to wear a knee support anyways just to help support it a bit.
I have invested in a knee strap
I went through a serious 4 week period last year during marathon training that gave me exactly the same problem. I got it sorted, trained properly, adjusted my stretch routine etc.
In hind sight I would say that 99% of the problem was down to doing too much too soon so take care how fast you allow your running enthusiasm to carry you.
If you havent already, get your gait analysed at a decent running shop with the right kind of video equipment and knowledge. I ended up replacing my running shoes as a result.
The knee straps help but dont get to rely on it, it may mask a problem that still needs sorting out. Above all, rest it.

Righto, Thanks for that. I did have my running gait analysed and got better running shoes, but this was before i did any road running. Si i didnt really know how my legs/knees were going to respond to it, and where i would feel any niggles.
Now i know a little bit more it would be worth going back again and then i would be able to explain where im haveing problems.
I have to admit i probably have done too much too soon. Im so eagre , thats my trouble lol.
Six beautiful sunny miles this lunchtime :-D

2 1/2 hour LSR tonight, absoulutely starving now, i have eaten loads of nut filled pasta with chilli sauce and about half a packet of frozen peas. I'm now baking a banana with a snickers in the middle, I hope it replicates that BBQ effect!! Then it'll be bed, I'm an hour ahead here in Clogland.
What do you lot eat & drink for your post run cravings?
Just thought I would let you know how I'm getting on. I know in comparison to you guys preparing for marathons and stuff I'm small fry but it also might give hope to others who want to start out......
Day 8 today of beginnner training. Been using that www.halhigdon.com/beginrunner/plan.htm (http://www.halhigdon.com/beginrunner/plan.htm) and today was the first time we did bang on 30/30 exactly text book. Walk to start, walk to finish and run/walk in between. Each day seems to be getting easier and not so puffed out and red faced by the end of it. Got another 22 days to go then on to the 5k training for the Race For Life in June.
I have done the RFL before but walked it with friends, this time I plan to run it all and after today it actually doesn't scare me anymore.
So, anyone looking to start running I would recommend that site as was recommended to me. I think its spot on. x

Going to do a 30k race on Sunday as my LSR, got a guy to pace me so it will be interesting, I need to make sure I don't try and race/go faster than I should (which is quite slow!).
I'm trying to pick up my natural cadence on my shorter runs, it's easy to slip back into my LSR pace on runs over 50 mins if I don't concentrate. It seems to be paying off and becoming more natural to run at a faster pace with very little extra effort.

Two sixers and and eighter so far this week, all at lunchtime so I got to enjoy the sun by the seaside :-)
Got a 16er planned for Saturday. I think the main challenge may be to not get lost!

I've been pushing my 50ish minute run, yesterday I did a new PB of 44:58 on it, upping the tempo on various stretches whilst keeping an eye on my HR to make sure I'm not pushing too hard/blow up. Worked out that was an average of approx 12 km/h, compared to my LSR pace of 10km/h.
Today on my middish length run I found my rhythm felt quicker for a similar HR/effort, and my time was better. When I do my LSRs I really just plod away, with a very rare quickening of tempo, and I don't want this to spread into every run I do. However I understand I can't push for speed/new PBs the whole time, some runs I just cruise along at whatever feels natural.
This is just a mix of my current and previous experiences and some snippets I've absorbed from some books, it may not be correct or even sensible advice!
Lunch time running at this time of year must be great, proper day light and it's not too cold then. I tried to leave early from work, but realised I'd forgotten my phone so had to turn round and then got stuck in a traffic jam, doh! But at least half of my run was in the fading light :) It sounds like you're getting the miles in!
Another useless post by me in the running thread. Still have not been running. I have however nearly finished painting the house. Two and half rooms left. We should have moved into a bedsit.
Arghhh, these posts are making me jealous! I didn't stretch after my Half on Sunday and got stuck in traffic wearing cold wet clothes, managed 7 on Tuesday but was tight and on Wednesday after about a mile I had to pull out of a run as my hamstring was soooooo tight and painful. So I think that may be the end of my marathon!

Well the 30k race went well, a guy from work paced us at 11km/h with one of those garmin super fandangoes to act as a training run, pace was almost steady as a rock, I speeded up for the last 1.5km as my colleague was struggling, overall time was 2:42 and there was plenty of fuel left in the tank :)
Other pluses were that the drinks water/coke/extran are the same as on the Rotterdam marathon, I had no issues drinking/running on the extran. Also I had half a jam sandwich at 20km, as an experiment as I find on my long runs my stomach is crying out for something solid. Again no issues, so I'll probably repeat for the marathon at the 20km and 30km marks, there is only so much sugary gloop a stomach can take!
Flymo, sounds like you're going well, what time are you aiming for on the London Marathon?

I'm not running London this year, didnt get a place so entered Edinburgh instead.
My aim is simply to complete in less than 4 hours. I'll be happy with 4h00m00s :-) but 3h59 would be better. Pace today was on track for around 3h51.

How long have you got until the race?
a few more months at least, its towards the end of May a month after London.
Some cracking running going on here at the moment, well except for me that is.
The sheer demands on your body of marathon training are phenomenal, keep plugging away all and stay fit and healthy.
I hope that I can add to this...
I haven't posted here for a few weeks - nothing major to report. But I need to get better at prioritising my run. Today I would have gone out on the bike with the monthly RoSPA meet but the battery was knackered. So I went running instead. Did about 10 miles as follows:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/26387453
Best pace: 5.35min/mile!!! Where the buggery did that come from!!!!!!!!!
Sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky, iPod blasting, me out running - which if I'm brutally honest I would do over anything else - and I really did feel on top of the world.
I'm sposed to be running in Liverpool Half on 28 March - it will be a struggle but I am going to do it:D

Woke up this mornng to glorious sunshine, and was very happy. I had my second 5 mile run for charity this morning and its was brilliant.
The route was a mixture of town roads and rural, very lovely. And the sun shone the whole time, but it was still very cold.
I was pleased when i completed the 5 miles in 45 mins and 48 seconds. thats my best road run time for 5 miles so far.
I cant wait now to do the 6 miles Sport Relief on 21st March.!

Going for a red wine recovery tonight!
It seems to work quite well, had a little on Friday, a few beers last night before the run and now red wine "relaxing" ! I tend to have 4-5 days off the booze during the week though.
Another week. Another week passed with no running.
Page bloody 4, what are we doing down here then?
Just back from a fairly light 7 mile recovery run, takes me to 300 miles so far this year :-) Yay!

Rumour has it a run on Sunday morning might be on the cards. Will be the first run in weeks. Hopefully this will be the boost I need to actually take my running gear into work and do something at lunch time instead of nothing.

Still no running for me...
Still no running for me...
:(
My reason for starting running was my back and now I can't run, guess what?
My back is painful and so the vicious circle starts...I am going to see how my leg feels on Monday and if it is ok going to go round the block, if that is ok and I take it easy then perhaps I can start again.
A PB at London won't be on, but if I can run again I may plod it out. Fingers crossed!
Them I will never run another marathon again, the training takes too much time and effort. I never realised it did until I stopped training and see how much time I was spending with the kids.
Hopefully I will mend and it can be my third and final one.

Get in there PV, that's quite some run! Well done - now don't forget a rest day (or two)...no run for me, less pain though, except for my back.
It has not been a good day in our house. Mothers Day always end up in rows and tears. I cancelled goling to Loch Fyne, I've cancelled Fathers Day, and I'm cancelling Mothers Day for next year.
I was going to go for a run at 11 but I'm only now about to go, I had to calm the storm and go to bloody Sainsbos to get some food given that we didn't go out to lunch. Just going to get changed but I've missed the best part of the day now.

I took a 500ml bottle of lucozade sport with me for my 12 miler today, was about the right quantity for me.
Sometimes I take a sugar free electrolyte drink and jelly sweets. Either seems to work ok for me.

Yup! No point buying a bag if you are happy with carrying a bottle.
I only take a bum bag for longer runs: 10/12 miles plus. Has been handy when it's been colder so I can stick my gloves and a spare layer in it. And I always take my phone with me for longer runs as I have a habit of getting lost and being late home!!

Well done you!!! The hard thing is to get off your ass in the first place, the rest becomes a lot easier - the hardest step is the one off the couch. Please do keep at it!!!
Sara & PV - I'm ashamed to say that I don't run with a drink. I don't like the feel of the fluid sloshing around. Instead, if I'm doing a really long run (12+) I will bring some money to buy a carton of Ribena. When I start marathon training next month (I know if I have a place in US Marine Corps Marathon on April 7) then I will start off with 10 milers, increase to 12 milers by running from home to the shop at Montford Bridge, and as it gets longer I will run to MB, stop for a drink, run on to Nesscliffe and back to MB, stop and drink, and then home. I will be so disappointed if I don't get a place in USMCM - if I don't, I will aim to do another US marathon, probably Seattle in November. I've never been to the west coast. A bit extravagant to go, but it's plan B, and this would be our holiday as we're not going anywhere in the summer.
Today I ran 11 miles to Bicton and back, with a little few extra bits to make up the eleven. No stellar times, deliberately aimed to be slow, and my Garmin battery needed a recharge - dammit - but I reckoned on about 9min miling, maybe slightly longer, up to 9m15s/mile.
After the morning I had, it was a relief to be out the house:D All seems peaceful on my return, I think they've made it up:rolleyes:

Also, I tend to have a bit of drink every three miles. I find that it helps to break the run up into manageable chunks.

It was good to be back out there. Did another run today and doing the same again tomorrow. Still have issues with my knees (think I always will) so have to be sensible and realistic as to what I can do. Plan is to do 4 short runs in the week and a longer one with Foxy at the weekends. Weekend runs are not always possible though so will just take those as and when we can fit them in.

No more running untill my Sport Relief 6 mile run on Sunday. And it looks like its going to be raining!

Once you get going running in the rain isn't too bad, just keep the pace up and you'll stay warm ;)

Well done :D
18 miles in the bag :-D
On a Friday and with a bad leg? great going.
I am just back from a windy/rainy limp round the block - no major pain to report so that's a start, I have lost soooooooo much fitness though and the temperature has risen quite a bit since my last run which was a real shock.
Going to try another run Sunday, if I'm not too hungover!
...can I put in enough miles to think about April 25th?

Well Sport Relief 6 Miles this morning, and it was'nt wet either. In fact it was lovely sunshine!
The route was bad!!!!!!!!
The organisation was not as good as i was expecting considering its a big national event!
Not many people there!
And it was a 1 mile route mapped out on the muddy hard to run on sports feild that was chewed up by football and Rugby!
Not very easy to run on at all. I ended up very muddy!
I managed to complete the 6 miles in 58.58 though. But it sure was hard work on that muddy field.

Well done with the muddy running.
Did a 2 1/2 hr LSR today, didn't take any food/drink and was a tad peckish on my return home. Great sunny running weather, I even bumped into a number of friends to stop and chat to (they weren't running).
Hmmmm, struggled out a very slow, long slow run...actually 14 miles but I was finished when I got in.
I've pulled a muscle in my back. Not gone to work today. However, assuming my back gets better over the course of the day, I may venture out this afternoon for a run along the canal. Been wanting to do that since I moved in. :)

Im very envious of everyone doign so many miles. I'm working through one of the couch to 5k programs, doing run/walk intervals and so on. How important are shoes, do you just wear 'standard' trainers ie a general pair of Nike/Reebok etc or do you have specific running shoes. Has anyone been for gait analysis, is it worthwhile? Im doing most of my training so far on gravel paths/trails. Currently round a nice little lake (large pond). Aiming to step up to Tittesworth reservoir, my goal is being able to run the whole of Tittesworth (4.5 miles)
Did a run. Although not down the canal as I had intended. I ended up doing a 7.5 mile round trip on the local roads. 57 minutes. Happy enough with that and with the rain it was quite enjoyable. :)
I need somebody to kick my ass to get me out the door. It's cold and wet and I don't feel like it TBH, but I think maybe I ought to go...
Please will someone connect boot to my backside:rolleyes:
