Plowsie - I'm thirding the timing thing... kinda. It is interesting to know what time you took. But it's really important that to start with (like for a month or more) that you pay little or no attention to it. You really really don't want to be pushing yourself. What you need is a foundation to build on, try to do too much too fast and you will end up restricting your performance long term.

I've my second physio appointment tomorrow. I probably won't be allowed to run again yet but when\if I get a green light I'll let you know see if you're interested.

You asked where I was going - Witty, Pask & Buckingham on the Billing Road.

2mths, hope the physio goes well mate
plowsie, one of the nice things about starting running is that you will improve really quickly and then reach a kinda of a plateau, then will improve again, its nice to look back and see how you,ve improved your distance or pace over a period of time, check out this site, its worth joining up and adding your details of your running in the training section, theres loads of good info

when I first started I wanted something to gauge my marathon decision on. I went out and did 5 miles, timed it over the total distance and took a note of it. Then I didnt bother with timing for at least a month after that.

I then timed again and based my target marathon pace for training on it. It actually turned out pretty accurate to be honest. Towards the end of that training I could have probably run faster but I didnt, I was aiming for a particular pace and stuck to it, mile after mile. Now, to build on last years running I am re-assessing my pace and upping the game a little in training. Seems to have worked well so far.

krhall

Yes CBA is one of the biggest problems...once you ahve actually got the gear on and got out of your road its fine.

Helps to have a goal though, I run high mileage because I am attempting to run a marathon in under 4 hours and wouldn't be able to attempt it without long (read boring) runs.

Sarah - The gel working?

Forgot to bring gel to work yesterday so ran without it but was ok. It doesn't feel 100% but loads better than it was. I'm gonna try running without it a few more times and see what happens.

i was sooooo flipping pleased with myself.

i'm planning on doing a 10k race in december. it would amazing to do it under an hour- that was my running target for this year (which i had given up on).

shins are, strangely, behaving themselves. v odd, esp as i did monday's and yesterday's runs totally on a hard surface. can't complain though.

:-D

best of luck with abingdon!

Come on Kev, got to think positive. None of this...."if I dont make it". If you are maintaing the necessary pace in trainig then no reason why you cant on the day.

I wish you the very best of luck. Will be thinking of you over the weekend, give us an update as soon as you can.

Well done all, looks like it was a PB day all round then!

After 26 miles, 385 yards and walking around Abingdon with a 4 year old on my shoulders I had nothing left last night even to write a decent post...

Well I have done it - sub-4! Actually my official time was 3:43:58, which I am pleased with, well was until I thought about the 2 mins I stopped for a wee after about 200 metres and the couple of minutes I got held up in a bit of slow moving runners through a tight off road section...could so easily have been a 3:40.

Still I put my heart and soul into it and was toast after 22-23 miles.

There was a young bloke I was running with for a mile at the start, until I looked at the pace, I said to him I'm slowing up a bit. To which he replied I feel strong so I'm cracking on...

Well I went past him at 20ish and had had a shower and a coffee as he was finishing, so gave me a bit of a boost - hope that doesn't sound too bad.

My legs are a bit stiff and my achilles are really sore, but I am in work and will be boring everyone silly with tales of my sub-3:45 today (did I really just say sub-3:45?).

Thanks for all the help and support on the thread all. I will mainly be slumped over my desk for the rest of the day!

You could do a marathon, although I'd do a half first just to see what its like, I did a few in the 80,s in the first running boom, you'll find after a few miles people at the same pace as you, exchange a few words of encouragement, maybe a little chat, poss stay with em til the end, you will enjoy it though, dont set your hopes too low though ;)

Thanks FIL, it felt great yesterday...

Well yesterday I was saying "Never again, I'm going to plod London, I don't enjoy the distance or the training you have to put in..." etc.

However today I am left wondering "How far can I push myself on this?"

I already have a place for London and I genuinely was going to plod it out, but arghhh, this running lark is too much of a challenge...

I am going to take a couple of weeks of small slow runs and then run the Kent Fitness League (cross country) and see how it goes.

Do you have to do a bleep test for your fitness in the RAF? I was wondering if you are training for the bleep test or run as part of the MSFT or whatever they like to call it nowadays (they keep changing it don't they?)

When you have had a few days off running ease yourself back into it gently. Don't go for speed at first, that will come and it sounds like trying to run too fast too soon is hindering you. Forget about the younger guys and just concentrate on yourself. You will probably find that you will be pleasantly surprised with the results if you just concentrate on you and your own running.

Well when I first made enquiries I was told I needed to be able to run 1.5 miles in 12:12, so 8:08 pace, I cut my distances and upped my pace over shorter runs thants why Ive been getting so many pbs recently, now I find I need to do a beep test but have decided to carry on increasing my pace as it cant really hurt, well apart from dodgy knees etc ;) will be having a few days rest though

How are the shins? If you can take your mileage up to 7 or 8 then your 10k is in the bag.

I had a great run today, 3.5 miles - no idea of pace, no watch and no personal pressure on myself!!!

Helped with the aches too!

Have you found a charity for VLM yet? I have chosen make-a-wish, great charity and they have showers after.

I love running in cities.

Canary Wharf is great to run around as it is really busy - not so much fun in the marathon...

I trying to decide on/work out a proper plan for marathon training. I've had a look at Hal Higdon's novice marathon training on his website and rather like the look of it.

What plans have you guys used? Any hints/tips/stuff to avoid? Bear in mind I'm starting from a pretty basic level but not a complete newbie.

Also, can anyone recommend any running books?

krhall
23-10-09, 12:32 PM
Sarah - I just run Abingdon using an 18 week schedule from Advanced Marathoning, which was ok.

It mixes up speed work etc.

Just make sure you do your long slow runs on Sundays, they are the most important runs the rest of the runs you do will all help though.

When you find a schedule you like the look of, don't be afraid to miss a run if you don't feel right. When I did London I got so hung up on the schedule that I ignored my body and ran virtually every run - when I should have had extra rest etc.

You'll be fine, you are already at an advanced stage of a lot of VLM entrants, who won't have run since school!

If you can start up'ing your mileage now, gradually, so you have a nice base mileage to run off of for when the training starts. If you can manage to get to 25 miles per week that would give you a real head start.

krhall
23-10-09, 12:56 PM
Oh and pick a goal and stick to it...don't do what I did and have a really good run in training and then suddenly start putting greater expectations on yourself.

There was a runner some years ago called Jim Fixx, he was a high flying buisness man and had a heart attack at something like 37, so he quit his job, took up running and wrote possibly two of the most important books on running, Jim Fixx,s complete book of running and the sequel to that book, dont know if anyone rembers him or not ? he almost singlehandedly started the early 80,s running boom, tragically he died of a heart attack in the end and at a really early age, if you can hold of those books on ebay or amazon they're a good read, also does anyone remember a book called flanigans run ? about a bunch of runners crossing the states in the 20,s, it was written by a guy who was a top athletics coach at the the time, Andy something or other, that was a good read as well, total fiction mind but a good read.

Keeping motivated is the hard part espically now the evenings are drawing in and the mornings are dark.
I have been using the Nike + band and sensor for a while now and following a marathon plan using that. I find that it works for me.

Thanks for the advice guys I really appreciate it.

What do you think of this:
http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00novice.htm

It's an 18 week plan but I have more than 18 weeks to go so I thought I'd repeat some of the weeks.

If you are doing an 18 week plan, you would be starting it on 21st Dec - right?

Don't redo any of the weeks, following the schedules can be a bit laborious at times, so my advice would be to run for "fun" up until then.

Get your sub 1 hour 10k out of the way and just run when you feel like it for as long as you feel like, steadily building up the mileage until you start Hal Higdon's schedule.

If you start early - you will dip at xmas and new year and start to worry. If you start the weekly miles are quite low in comparisson so it wou't be an issue.

Ran my first 10k race today for cancer research. Never ran an actual event before and really enjoyed it. Managed it in 1hr 02mins so not the quickest but I didn't stop and also did it with a back injury which did at one point really slow me down. Would do it again!

18 weeks doesn't seem very long though. I'm sure I'll lose some time with being ill (I'm guaranteed to get a cold at some point) and possibly injured. I don't want to cut it too fine.

I'm gonna stick with the plan until christmas and see how i'm going. My aims for this year are to get a sub hour 10k and fit in a 13.1mile LSR.

Shin started playing up on Friday, it had been fine and about a mile into my run I got a sudden sharp pain and then more general (less painful) pain. V annoying. I haven't got time to see the physio this week but I'm gonna make an appointment for next week I think.

Did 7.19miles this morning. Took it easy due to shin issues and did run/walk (run 3.5 minutes, walk 1 minute). Weirdly shin stopped hurting after 4/5ish miles, it's being annoying again now though so I'm icing it into submission.

That is great news. I wouldn't worry about the time it is great just finishing an event especially when it is your first one :p. Which one was it?

As Sarah says, you may get hooked if you are not already as you said you would do it again ;).

How's your back?

I just did 3.25 miles today, chopped up and old hi viz and wrapped it round my arm for something yellow, decided to take foxys advice and take it nice and easy but ended up breaking the the nine minute barrier again, maybe not that fast for you guys but pretty quick for me ;)

Glad it worked for you Stew and you must have felt good breaking the nine minute barrier :D

Sarah you are doing well with your 7 mile runs. Have you tried using the Ibuprofen gel on your shins before running since they have started hurting again?

Back is fine today but now I have terrible pain in both hips and the back of my ankles. I stretched lots but now I am walking like an elderly gentlemen with a bowl problem! Ouch. The run I did was for Cancer research and was at Dorney Lake near Windsor. Nice place to run as it's very flat.

I have one, but prefer the 305 after quite a bit of time using both!

I have managed to reserve one at my local halfords, not that I need one, just wanted to test before I posted it here.

If you have your heart set on a 405, buy a 305 send it to me and I'll send you the 405.

I did my first ever 8 miler at the weekend. Did run/walk 9 mins run and 1 minute walk, I'm not totally convinced on the run/walk thing but it made it much easier to keep hydrated- I had a bit of drink every time I walked.

Right I was just sitting here feeling sorry for myself as I have a case of man-flu - Sarah you have inspired me to get out there and run.

Well done mate.

Great effort Sarah. Wont be long before you've done a 10 miler, then a 12 etc etc. Its amazing how your boundaries just keep pushing further and further out.

Well done.

Flymo - Quick look here....

Right, fingers crossed it looks like I have one. I did manage to reserve one and travel to collect it but good job I checked the box before leaving for home, there was a bunch of items missing. No heart rate strap, no charging cradle etc. Muppets. Last one in the store too.

So, the very kind manager offered to get one from another store and drop it at my local Halfords as he lives nearby. Hopefully collect it tomorrow or Wednesday.
