Seems everyone is finding the running mojo again.
Little and often seems to be getting me back in the swing nicely, left to my own devices I'd be trying to run 30km+ by now!
Just back from another 5.76 miles. Usual pain in my feet, but good none then less. Got my minute mile average back down to below 8 minutes. 7.45. :)
Looking forward to the Hellrunner again now. :)
My Hellrunner number arrived today :-D

13 km this morning, 6.5kms of hill repeats and 6.5kms on undulating pavements. A nice start to the day and not that cold.
Porridge at work was tasty.
And I've entered Portsmouth Half Marathon the day before Valentine's day.
I was supposed to be running yesterday but ended up playing badmington instead. This morning I ache all over. Now going to be substituting Wed runs for badmington.
I'll be out later with any luck then heading off to Scotland tomorrow morning and will be legging it around new galloway forest over the weekend, cant wait, btw which hellrunner are you all doing, thinking of doing the hell up north in Nov

Err. SARAH, what are the timings?
Just started my training for the Edinburgh Half Marathon on the 10th April 2011. http://www.edinburgh-half.co.uk/ anyone on here taking part.
The training plan I'm using is the Nike+ Coach, so should be interesting as I've only ran 10K once in my life before...
Will keep you updated on how the training pans out.

I like running, my old man ran for the UK, my Brother runs and I run. We've all done marathons and half marathons blah blah, but in all my years (ramblers excepted) serious runners are the most boring bunch I've ever known. It's not the running talk, it's the injury talk, and they don't drink or do anything else exciting, they're too skinny for their own good and they need to eat more pies and relax a bit more. I think I started running to get away from them, until the ankles and achiles started playing up......argh don't get me started

I agree there are some strange runners and cyclist who all they talk about is grammes of protein, carb loading and treat one pint as a major blow out. My personal approach is a bottle of red the night before a long run, and puddings with custard at the canteen because they taste nice. It stops me getting carried away! I like the action of running, talking about it all day is duller than discussing SV sprocket ratios!
Better go and get a fry up now, mmmmmm...
I've binned the run for today. My excuse is I am still aching from the badminton session on Wednesday. However those does mean a long run tomorrow is on the cards. :)
This week I have done running, cycling, swimming and body pumping :-D

Just back from a hilly 8 mile run. :)

been doing more cross-trainng due to dodgy shin, but i'm really enjoying it. slightly mucking up marathon training but hopefully it'll all be ok.

Just wondering if Tim had the bottle of Red the night before like he mentioned in an earlier post????
I think we should consider introducing a bottle of Red as a mandatory night before drink before the Olympic 2012 track and field events next year. It could be a good leveller for us against the African track athletes. They run like the wind but I bet they they can't hold their vino.
Did about 3 miles cross coutry with my dogs today, they wanted more, I didn't!!

That was had on Friday with copious Grolsch, Saturday was my first dry night of the week (living in a hotel during the week tends towards the boozier side).
I do fancy this race one day.....

Tim in Belgium, that is an outstanding event, now that's what I call a fun run. A strict training regime would be vital for success.

Won't be running for the short term duration. Went to the doctors this morning with neck pain. Had it since Saturday think I just cricked my neck whilst sleeping. But got up this morning in extreme pain. Doc says she thinks I may well have slipped a disc in my neck. Wasn't expecting that. Now on Diazepam and C0-codomal. Just taken the first one so getting ready for the spaced out tripping about to desend. Going back to doctors on Friday to confirm if a scan is going to be in order.
To think I've ran 13 miles this week with a potentially knackered disc in my neck. :pale:

Oh.. cool beans! I walked 3 times, not for long though. I'll try and work those slows out of the regime... But I only run once a week, so I don't know how long it will take
included a walk wtf, I would need to include sprint to get to that!

Day 2 of the neck saga. Feeling only the slightest big better pain wise. Tablets are obviously doing there job to a degree. Yesterday I was totally exhausted with dealing with the pain constantly all day. Today is going to be another dose of the same I think,.

Here's a wierd little story. Went out early this morning running in some woods near me. Very cold, very clear and bright. It's a well known place for dog walkers, runners and some mountain bikes. Anyway I come across a woman, leaning on a tree, very shaky holding her little dog in her arms. (This is not a joke, promise), I ask if she's OK, she says she's seen outlines of two people in the clearing all lit up, err? I say, you what ? By this time my dogs are going mental barking at nothing, at the same point in the clearing. Couple more people amble by with dogs and their dogs join in. After about 5 mins of dogs going barmy, we've all had enough and pull the dogs away. First women is still freaked starts talking about ghosts. Dog hysteria or something spooky, I've no idea but next time I'm running there I won't be leaving the path.

Have you been running near the uranium mines?
ok a little advice needed please.
Do any of you train to a HR monitor or do you just run? I have been trying to run within my HR monitor program zones and I have to say that it becomes more of a run, walk, run, walk thing to keep within the zones.
I am by no means a pro so any advice at these early stages would be great.
BTW I am loving my new shoes!!

Yup, that's when I started running.
Tough guy looks crazy. A friend of mine has done it a couple of times.
Training is not going good at all. Well actually training is not happening. At this moment in time it looks like the hellrunner isn't going to happen for me.
I have been signed off sick for another week with my neck pain still as bad. Went back to the doctors yesterday and he has changed my medication. I have an appointment with a physio to arrange this week. Will see how things go. I have mobility back in as far as I can now actually stand up, sit down and move my arms without additional pain in my neck. I even have some movement in my neck without additional pain. But if I move my neck too quickly in any direction, sharp pains. My neck aches continuously. So with the new medication which actually doesn't make me feel like crap all day, and the visit to a physio, I'm hoping of some improvement before the end of the week. Currently the diagnosis is a slipped disc which has caused a trapped nerve.
Looking on the positive side of things, at least my knees and my feet are getting a break.

ohh I hope you GWS si.
I did a 4 mile run tonight but it took an hour and 20 mins!
I am still sticking to the HR training I had a look at the website you posted Sarah some good information there thanks.
Improvements are being made. Most of the pain is gone. I only get pain now if I move my neck to full extent I can. However I still have constant neck ache. I'm now on tablets for retards. I kid you not. They are called Brufen Retard. LMAO. They are slow release pain relief tablets. I was given some more Diazepam to take but not taking them. They just make me sleep all day and feel like crap and don't seem to make any difference to the pain if I take them or not. I'm hoping there is going to be enough improvement by the end of the week to think about getting a couple of long runs in before the Hellrunner. If not, I will just run it without any training. It's not really that far is it, and I am sure I should be able to do it. Just have to hope the neck problem is sorted before then.

16km along the Sudigawa river in Tokyo this morning, bright sundhine, clear blue skies and abou 11 degrees C, absolutely perfect (apart from having to cross a few roads). Now recovering in the airport lounge drinking free Kirin beer, may start on the the free red wine next. 10 days until Portsmouth half marathon.

Sorry to bring down the quality of this thread, but on longer runs I sometimes suffer from chaffing, mainly to the buttocks as they rub against each other! Does anyone have a solution to this? Or suffer the same?

vaseline or bodyglide?
Well I wont be doing the hell runner next weekend. :(
Been signed off sick by the doctor again for another week. My neck still shows no sign of getting better. Now going for x-ray to determine if there is any disc damage. It would seem I have a trapped nerve which is causing me the pain. Especially when I look up or down. Doc seems to be of the opinion possible damage due to bike accident I had.
Joy. :(

Hurts like hell - they are called '**** brackets' in this house as they make neat brackets around the chocolate tea towel holder (*)...first got them in Southend Half-Marathon and could barely walk because they were so sore.
I use lots of Vaseline now and that is perfect, I found body glide didn't work for some reason. Brave Soldier silicon stuff is good too, but expensive.
Oh and sudocrem helps if you get them...just don't ask your wife to apply it for you!

Well a good race this morning, 1hr 40mins 39s.
A blustery race, I tried to keep the pace down at the start, hard with the coastguard helicopter fly bys. It was then round the marina and onto the shingle foreshore listening to the Audio Bully's, looking for the harder footing rather than following the crowd, up on to the muddy path, the path and puddles seeming firmer than the grass alongside, so it was the wet puddle route for me, suprisingly passing a few. It was then across some common land and on to the parks, Welcome to the Paradise city ringing loud in my ears, I let the pace start to increase here, starting to overtake people and build. On to the promenade and some Florence and the Machine to take me in to the blustery cross/headwind, pace up and down a little, but still overtaking.
It was then up passed the Pyramid centre, starting to let the legs reach, the wind hinting onto my back, the pace increased further, going passed people the rain increasing. I probably increased the pace a little too much, heading round for the final stretch into the wind was a struggle, but I kept reeling people in, for a final sprint finish. There heart and lungs were pumping, but after the end there was plenty left in the legs, perhaps I should have gone faster earlier! I'll have to wait until next time to try that.
A shower followed by a sports massage and a walk back to the car before celebrating with large cod, chips and mushy peas. A drive back to Reading in time to watch Ireland narrowly get beaten by France and a few pints of the dark stuff.

I know this isn't really running related but I'm currently teaching myself how to do front crawl. I've gone from hating it 2 weeks ago and forcing myself to do one length of crawl every 10 lengths to today being able to do 30+ lengths without having a breaststroke break. I want to improve my technique now. Does anyone have any good hints or tips or suggestions of where's good to look for decent advice/videos on the interweb?

Keep your body flat, kick from the hips not the knees, turn your head to the side rather then look up when breathing.
Can't remember anything else from my swimming lessons when I was 11 but I expect there are some videos on youtube.

I think I keep my body flat. I have no idea if I kick from the hip or knee, I'll check next time I go swimming. And I turn my head to the side but apparently I roll too much when I breathe rather than just twisting my neck. Also, I breathe every 2 strokes. I know it's better (?) to do it every 3 strokes.

When I used to do triathlons you hardly kicked at all when swimming, saving the legs but also emphasising the use of the arms and the glide, a lot comes from the glide not the pull of the strokes. Also for getting the body right try and imagine your head 2-3 inches lower than is natural, this should get the body nice and flat. Best thing is to join a tri or swim club for their sessions, I went from struggling to keep up with the 60+ year olds, to be in the front end of the intermediate group in about 4-6 months.

This swimming lark is way more complicated than I had imagined.
Has this swimming lark got anything to do with the depth of muddy water you had to wade through on Saturday? ;-)
I am rubbish at running!! Could never run to save my life :)
Have now started though in the gym and can do the whole 2mins at roughly 7 level and then stop for another 2mins and then get going again.
But no more than 10mins in total of running lol
Any advise to get me a bit better is much welcomed

Relax, try and enjoy it, take your time building things up and keep at it. If the weathers good get outside to train. Don't push yourself too hard at the start or you might get injured and not fancy it again. Reward yourself after a good training session. Oh and get a decent pair of shoes if you can.
That's it from me, I've been at it so long now I do the reward bit whether it was a good, bad or indifferent session. Guinness is my reward. Run, Run, slurp, slurp.

lol, no.
Intermittently ouchy leg has encouraged me to do more other stuff and slightly less running. Just doing 3 runs a week now: a biggy at the weekend and a couple of shorter ones during the week. Been going swimming 2-3 times a week, body pump once or twice a week and the occasional cycle.
