As Sarah and Foey say everyone is doing really well and certainly motivating me too.

However, today was an off day:(. I did 11.5km's today and it was the most awful run. The wind was against me and I found it a struggle running against it. I ran with a colleague who also found it a hard slog. It made the run seem twice as long and I really couldn't imagine getting it back in. Not sure whether I am glad I went out there and did it...

wind is the worst weather for running. i hate it.

That is awesome Hovis I bet you both felt really great after  but no chips :smt103. Are you going to save them until after the half marathon?

there is nothing better than running in the wind and the rain, no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing:D

dunno? just did not fancy chips

velindre hospital (the one im raising money for) is throwing a bit of a party after the marathon, and putting on a buffet, so i expect i will have some of that, and it would be rude not to wash it down with a couple of pints of strongbow:p

If i ever have a problem with wind i just make sure i'm not being closely followed & let it go.........................................oh i see what you meant now. :D

No running for me last night or tonight i'm afraid, got an annoying pesky pain in my hip/inner groin area so think it best to give it a rest.

Foey - common issue mate, most likely to be a hip flexor problem, I used to suffer with it, but a few gentle stretches before and after a run should sort it.

I love running in the rain the heavier the better - wind though, not so good!

That's why I love the winter XC season as you get to get really wet and muddy, puts the fun back into running.

So do things like GRIM and British Military Fitness 10k's, great fun and can be a real test.

hovis

not keen on wind though.

Hovis is that the costume you are wearing for the half? Looks bloody hot mate.

yeah, it is hot, i did a 2½ mile fun run in it in just under 20 mins, which was pretty good, but the padding in the top (haha, you thought that was just me didnt you) makes it too hot, so im swapping it for a blue t-shirt with vilendre logo (the charity im running for) the mask also dropped down at times to cover my eyes a bit

i have a 10k coming up, so im going to try it again with the t-shirt

it will only be my 2nd half marathon, and im pretty new to running, and have been told im mad to do it in fancy dress?

I must admit I always thought Hovis looked pretty hot too, but thats another story I suspect :D hardly run in weeks due to constant overtime and not having two mins to myself, and yet bizzarely after not running for nearly 5 weeks I somehow seemed to have knocked my pace down to sub 10 mins for the first time in ages, yay me ;)

krhall

sometimes a rest or enforced time off is just what you need for your muscles to fully repair.

I can't wait for Abingdon to be done so I can cut my mileage back and stop aching and then hopefully get quicker at more reasonable distances. 29 days to go!

Of course the above assumes a sub-4 for me, if not then it will be a few weeks off and a re-thing about my goal.

Superb, looks to be the exact area of discomfort, i'll try it later before going for a gentle run with the mutts. :smt023

Just tried it on the floor in the office, could really feel the muscle stretching, just glad i remembered to shut the door first.

Signed back up at the gym now...and managed another 5km although on the treadmill with an incline of 1.0% my time was slower than last week at 31.49secs. Although, managed to finish w/o feeling like a sack of spuds ready to keel over.

Then, a little free-weights work.

Hi folks - I'm all very very new to the running thing... having just started on a 9 week programme to go from "couch to 5k"

Week one has consisted of 60 seconds running/jogging followed by 90 seconds walking for a total of 20 mins...plus a 5 min brisk walk and stretches either side for the warm up and cool down...

The first day was hard, the second day seemed to go much easier, and yesterday went even better... next week I start running for 90 seconds and walking for 2mins for a total of 20 mins...

I'm enjoying it so far, the main objective is to get me out the house, as I no longer have my dog to walk...

Any hints and tips are welcome!

Hi Jen, Welcome to the running thread, i'm fairly new myself (just over 6 weeks) so don't expect much in the way of hints or tips from me, there are some really helpfull & knowledgeable people on here & i am sure someone will always have an answer for your questions, they have mine, the only bit of advice i will pass on at the moment is don't do too much too quickly, i was advised to slow down a bit & jog a day rest a day & it has proved to be very sound advice indeed, keep up with the good work & come back to keep us all informed of your progress.

krhall

Jen - Sounds like you have a plan anyway. There is some useful stuff in this thread, but if you have any specifics just ask.

If you haven't already, treat yourself to some proper running shoes and a few pairs of running socks. Get the best you can, I would recommend gait analysis before getting them if you can.

Don't over do it in the first few weeks, your body needs time to recover too. I'm sure your schedule has rest days and cutback weeks in it anyway.

One more thing join fetcheveryone.com, nice place to log your runs and keep a track of your progress.

Good luck.

Thanks guys!

I've been doing one day running and then a rest day, seems to be working so far, I made the mistake of two days in a row earlier on in the week - MISTAKE. lol.

I wasn't going to buy "proper" running shoes just yet, need to see if I'm going to stick at it first, and my dedication may be tested in the lovely scottish climate!

So far already I can see an improvement in how far I can run in the 60 seconds, because i run in the local park at the moment I know how long the paths are, so i was thinking it took me a minute to run that the other day, but then yesterday it took less time if that makes sense...

I'm taking my time, my friend is a sports therapist and I've seen and heard too many horror stories abnout doing too much too quick!

It's nice to know that I can pick up my biking tips along with my running tips on here though! :)

A session with a physio might be well advised here, they may not cure it but might be able to provide massage and rehab exercises for you.

It is the second time this has happened so would be worth getting specific help.

I live relatively local (12 miles) and also work in Greenwich Park, so fortunately I have no such worries. Last time I did London I sat in work for an hour relaxing and watching the build up on the tv, also nice to be able to use the clean toilets too - nervous runners in portaloos really smell!

Runners. I am really trying to get my fitness back to a very high standard again, like I used to be when younger. I have always wanted to run the London Marathon (yes, me). Now, is there any requirements to enter? Do you have to be part of a club of some sort?

Up for a challenge then? After not getting a VLM place for 2010 I'm thinking about doing the Edinburgh marathon in May 2010.

Not much more, you would really need to be making a decision within the next few weeks to get started training ready for May.

I'm gonna go for a long run tonight, see what sort of distance I can cover with my bad knee, see how long it takes etc, then make a decision.

cool, dont over do it though. you might put yourself off, you can achieve alot with 6 months of training.

+1, you could end up injuring yourself further. Are there points where you can cut your run short if you need to?

Yeah, I'll know when to not push it, my ankle is workable as just stick a support on, my knee is different.

That will make me lazy, if I run in a circle or to points that are near to home, I will get too lazy. I am just going to run as far as I can without hurting, then ring Kayla to pick me up, her house is 8miles away, if I can do that, I'll be happy.

set a realistic target and aim for it. you need a goal to aim for. that goal will keep you going when you feel like stopping and give you a boost when you make it. Could be a mile, could be 5 miles, doesnt really matter but decide before hand if you can.

Kayla's house it is then, there are uphill and downhill stretches, I should realistically be able to make that at a steady pace.
