Yeah, on Saturday. My legs were happy but my lungs were furious!

Gonna pop out for a little run tomorrow lunchtime and see how it goes.

Rest day today. Didn't want to have a rest day as I am on an enthusiastic role at the moment. But I can feel the knees complaining more after each run. Still, 20 miles over the past three days is going to have to be good enough. Damn knees stopping me doing the running I really want to do. Think I may start popping the pain killers and carry on again anyway.

Do you think the intense mileage might be contributing to the problem? 20 miles is a lot over three days without rest. I dont think its a good idea to ignore the pain and carry on.

It is the mileage. No doubt about that at all. I just can't do many miles a week otherwise knees start to hurt. I know ignoring the pain is not the way to go. That was more of a tongue in cheek comment. It was doing exactly this which ended up with me not doing anything for 6 months. I have taken a rest day today, tomorrow will be a short 4 mile run and two six miles Thursday and Friday. No running this weekend for me anyway. I am sure it is only a matter of time before my running days will end.

Have you thought about cutting the distances and then introducing some low impact alternatives like biking. You should be able to put some serious mileage and effort in with a mountain bike without stressing the knees.

Just been out for a 3 miler. Was a good pace (for me). I think 3 was enough for today, I was pretty ready to cough my guts up by the end of it!

I have thought about that. I have quite a good mountain bike that does not get used enough. There are plenty of hills and tracks around home that I could ride along as well. The only issue is the time. I live well over an hour away from work and quite simply can't be bothered to get out there in the dark by the time I get home. Guess I will have to wait until the days get longer.

It was spinning tonight, I feel suprisingly fresh afterwards and it's loosened my legs up nicely after yesterday night's long run, I'd definitely recommend it as a lower impact training session to replace a run, and very easy to target your heart rate precisely.

I took the advice of you guys and changed my workout programme, so i had rest days from running. Im still doing some form of exsercise everyday but not running lol.
I did my 3.6 mile rout again last night and was amazed at the difference in the way i felt.
I got back knowing i had been running but felt i could have carried on.
I knocked 3 mins off thursdays time and i wasnt even trying. It took me 37.5 mins last night. I only walked for about 30 seconds twice which was loads better than last week.
My legs didnt have that uncomfortable aching all donw the insides of my shins to my ankles.
Im off to the gym tonight for more cross training and weights. Tomorrow im going to run home from work, which will be a challenge for me. Its about 4.5 miles and has a big long hill but i will take it steady.
Posted off my first charity 5 mile run today so there is no going back now!

I went for my 6 mile run today. I thought I would give the sole plant a try to see if it made any difference to my knees. I noticed several things.

I had shin splints today, not so bad I couldn't run but enough to be painful. The shin splints died away, almost instantly. To run sole of the foot first I had to have higher knee lift in my stride pattern. My foot does not move around so much in the trainer. I need to keep a relatively good pace in order to achieve this stride otherwise I revert back to heel strike without realising it and can't get back to the sole plant when I realise I am striking with the heel again. I think it is a more effective method of running but think I will have to train myself to run like that naturally.

I ran with the gloves on again, but didn't need to ditch them. My trap, deltoid and tricep muscles feel like they have had a good workout.

Interesting. I find it really difficult to not heel strike but I guess it's because it uses different muscles. I might have another go on a short run.

Suffered from CBA for swimming today but went for a 5 miler at lunchtime.

Still coughing. But better than I was. Hoping I'll be pretty much fixed for 14 miles on Saturday. I can't wait :-D

This training programme is going to be tough, its only week two and the miles are already piling up, I managed to break into the first 1100 on Fetch, not long until I can get down to sub 1000 in the training league.

It didn't feel bad at all, legs were a bit stiff after but didn't take too long to recover thankfully. I was convinced I'd be knackered once I'd got to the end of the road but I surprised myself :)

Well im chuffed with myself, being new to this running lark.
Last night i ran home from work......its 4.6 miles but i start in a valley and had to clime out of it lol. I did pretty well though. The fist big long hill wasnt as bad as i was expecting. I slowed to a fast walk half way up but then run all the rest of the way untill i got to where i live where there is anothe long ish hill but its very steep, again i slowed to a fast walk for about 30 seconds and carried on running.
Im still not getting that aching inside my legs which im happy about, and i didnt feel like i was going to die lol.
So the 4.6 miles took me 50 mins and 20 or so seconds.
Im going for a run on Saturday morning, am i think i may have a go at 5 miles. Im sure i can do it.

I feel great this morning.

I've found that i've enjoyed running more as i've been increasing my distances. My shorter runs during the week are ok but it's the long runs at the weekend that I really love. I've even stopped having to have my mp3 player, i just don't feel like i need it any more, i often take it with me on my weekend runs but don't bother using it.

Good, and some "medicinal" red wine :)

Really enjoy a quick blast run, on my long slow runs I have to try not to get carried away, on a short one just blast it out :D

Any advice for a week's break?

I'm off skiing, a week of off piste so my knees will take a fair hammering, should I try some runs at altitude (1600m), or wait until I get back? And should I jam my long run in a few days early and miss out some of the shorter stuff?

I never knew training for a run could be so complicated!

I would try to get the long runs done and skip the shorter ones. Having said that my shorter runs are up to 1.5 hours now so its getting pretty difficult to fit them in anyway!

Hmmm. I have a Saturday morning, pre-LSR routine, but I'm not sure how good it is. It involves a bowl of cereal and a big mug of tea. And for during the run I take a sugar-free electrolyte drink (Zym or Nuun) and jelly fruit sweets. I have some drink every 3 miles and a/some sweets every 3 miles starting at mile 6.

Yesterday, I tried lucozade sport (and some sweets but not as many as usual) to try it out before races. I'm not keen on it.

Just done 7ish miles, same speed as Wedmesday, but my HR was a bit higher, I'm blaming that on the red wine, LSR tomorrow night after work. I think I'm going to shift my routine by a day when I get back from skiing, I prefer running in daylight!

One other thing, I occasionally catch my ankles with my other foot, only once or twice per run, but I find the hard edge of the trainer sole can sometimes cut it. I now wear plasters to provide preventative cushioning in case of a direct strike. Anyone else suffer from this or am I just weird and mal coordinated?

Sarah - as Flymo said it is really important that you start to think about fuelling during the run. It is important, not just for avoinding "the wall", but will also help you chop the marathon up in to smaller milestones.

I use orange squash in a bottle belt when training, but when I had my disaster in London, I ran without it and drank the water and lucozade, which I wasn't used to and it upset my stomach. I also took food and sweets from people en-route again not helping me.

So when I did abingdon, I ran with the bottle which got me to about 18 miles then I used water/lucozade but only sips. Made a massive difference physically and mentally.

Also I took 4 SIS Orange Carb Gels and took one every 5 miles for the first 20 miles, which gave me a smaller focus and each gel felt like a milestone and gave me a little boost.

From memory Flymo trained with Lucozade and so drank the stuff on course, but I think they are changing it this year so if you decide to go down that route check what they are giving out and train with the exact flavour and variety. That way you make the marathon feel more like a trining run which should help you relax.

krhall
01-02-10, 08:34 PM

I've started training with orange flavour lucozade for that reason. I don't really like it but I think I'll stick with it for my long runs.

I've not tried any of the energy gels and I don't intend to, I like my fruit jellies :-D

I was hoping to not take any liquid with me at all and rely on getting lucozade along the way. I'll will take my fave sweets though.

Yup, it looks mental (and fun). A friend of mine has done it a few times, not sure if he did it this year though.

My boss does a lot of running but no road running at all. He's into orienteering and fell running and stuff like that. Looks fun but flipping hard work!

Tough guys is ace fun, both the summer and winter events, although it was a while ago when I did one of each a while ago whilst still at Uni, definitely worth it whatever your fitness level and with some speed you'll finis pretty high up. When I did them the summer run was shorter and twice round the obstacle course, the winter one had a longer run and only once round the obstacle course. Full submersion in cold water is nice and cramp iducing at the end of January.

Back from a 2 hour LSR, my avg HR was super low (140), not sure if I was going too slow, even though a lot of the guides advise you to throttle back on these runs, should I be pushing a little harder on these?

Fair enough - I'm not a Lucozade fan either it dries my mouth right up, that's why I always carry squash.

Gels have their place but as long as you have your own plan then it's all good and practising on your long runs will see you right.

I do this and it gets really sore, always the same ankle I hit too. I go weeks without doing it, then I catch it and it bleeds and I keep hitting it for days after, knocking scabs off etc. I actually have a little scar there now.

Tends to happen more in my Nikes I think, but no idea why. Have tried to look at how I feel when I do it etc. am I tired or whatever, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

We got out this morning thankfully, sunday there was a thick layer of frost everywhere so we didn't bother.

Chris says we did the mile in 10 minutes this time, apparently quicker than last time. I felt it more as well, was pretty dead when I got back lol! Might have something to do with us swimming last night though.

Did 10 miles after work today.

I discovered that I need to eat sooner than an hour and a half afterwards.

It's all good, but don't try and go too fast or you'll put yourself off running totally.

Well done on all the exercise, especially swimming - man that is tough exercise!!!

Went spinning again tonight, feel quite fresh, got to cycle to work and back tomorrow as the car is going for a new exhaust centre secion, so it won't be until Thursday when I don my trainers again.

On the plus side I got a package from wiggle today, more running tights, LS tee and two pairs of socks, cheaper than buying out here in Clogland :)

I have to eat as soon as I return from a 1hr+ run, normally I go for a jam sandwich with no butter and a few glasses of milk, into the shower, then out and cook whatever I'm ruining on the stove.

Oooh, I love wiggle deliveries :-D I've ordered a new pair of shorts. I am developing ridiculous looking tan lines (seriously) with my current legwear.

My mistake food-wise was to shower before eating, I couldn't tolerate being so minging for any longer (had been sat in the car for 45 minutes driving home first too).

Food for in the car is the way forward. Brrrr...it's too cold for shorts!

That will be my plan next time!!

If you saw my two-tone legs you would understand the need for shorts!!!

Aren't you broken at the moment or is that just your car?

My new shorts arrived today. Woohoo. New tan line time :-)

Ive done a few runs since coming back from the states in fact had a couple of pbs @ 3 miles and 3.6 miles and it got me wondering what kind of mile pace peeps are running at, anyway heres roughly mine
3 miles @ approx 9:40 pace
6 miles @ approc 10:30 pace
When I used to run in my younger days my average pace would be in the region of 6:30 with my best time for a 2.2 mile relay race in approx 12 mins and at this time I was smoking 20-30 marlboro a day and sinking pints in the NAAFI every night, how times and waistlines have changed ;)

My pace is all over the place to be honest, but about 8:10 - 8:20 is comfortable for me.

I did 18 miles at 7:55 a couple of weeks back and I think my race on Sunday (10 miles) was at 7:13 overall.

I really struggle to keep a steady pace though.

Still have not run. Not broken, just things getting in the way. Won't be going for a run today either. Think I will give this week a miss and start fresh next week.

Good pace mate, Im all over the place too, I seem to have this mindset that if its a short run Ill run it quick but if its longer Ill take it easy which means sometimes on a longer run I come home quite fresh knowing I could have put more effort into it, its daft really cos Im not competing except against myself, I suppose the main thing is to go out and enjoy myself, push too hard and Ill be getting injured again.

me too, i have different paces for different distances.

i find that the surface i'm running on makes quite a difference too.

I was really knackered yesterday and tuesday, but had promised I'd run to work with someone as they wanted to do the big hills. Honestly wasn't looking forward to it, but it was sipping down and a promise is a promise. Anyway ran at his pace, which was just a touch slower than I would've run and it felt good, I really enjoyed it too.

Legs ache now though.

Pace is tricky even with a Garmin on!

Well i have not done any running at all so far this week. Started to feel a bit iffy last Saturday after my 5.2 mile run, and by tea time was starting to feel quite rough with a head cold.
Started dosing myself with paracetamol and was feeling ok. Got up and went to work Monday feeling less than 100% but forced mtself to go to the gym, felt ok if tired.
I was hoping i could sweat it out of me. LOL
I woke up Tuesday 6 am feeling like death warmed over, could hardly talk or breath so ended up staying in bed sleeping till lunchtime!
Been at home all week and only just starting to feel remotely human again and getting fidgety for the gym and going running.
I am going to see how i feel in the morning and make my descision as to what i do.
Im glad i have got it over with now as my number came through today for my first charity run in a couple of weeks.
I cant believe how much gunk one nose can generate?

I have an APP on my Iphone that tracks my route which i can check out online, Its called Fitnio...it tells me my distance and how many feet i have climed etc and the time and callories and all that stuff.
The only problem is after my 5 miles last Saturday i got the low battery chime at the end, so i have no idea what im going to do when i want to run longer distances?

Ive got a couple of apps myself, runkeeper, motion x GPS and mapmyrun the problem I have is that it sometimes struggles to locate satelites and the iphone battery is famously weak, Im looking to get a garmin 305 but its just cash as per usual thats the stumbling block

The iphone apps just don't cut it, I use mine solely for music on the run. Except for when Mrs H calls me to ask me a really pointless question when I am 3/4 of the way up Shooters Hill, same place everytime too!!!

My run is ruined if I don't have my Garmin, using it and then uploading to Fetch equally as important as the run itself!

Good luck for the 20 miler Sarah, I will be 2 miles behind you on Sunday!
