Not to worry. As I said, rather glad of the excuse not to run at the moment. :)

I did run home the long way on Friday.

I'm about to go for a fairly slow 7 miler over to Shelton water tower on the west side of town. That will be the longest distance I've run this year, I think. It's blue sky and sunny here, no snow, but very cold. Perfect conditions for running:D

Ed
20-12-09, 01:09 PM
Just back, I did 8 as I was enjoying it so much. That is the longest I have run this year, it took me 71mins and a few seconds. So 9 min miling, which is what I wanted. Feeling very pleased with myself!!!

Got to go fetch Anne's christmas prez now, from an arty crafty shop over at Much Wenlock. As it's so nice here (although clouding over, perhaps we'll have snow after all) I'm going on the bike:D

Soon as I woke up this morning and saw the snow outside I knew I definitely had to get out and run, however the blue skies turned a rather lurid shade of yellow/grey and it was a mix of rain and sleet coming down, did 4 miles and tbh I didnt enjoy it as I thought I would, still thats another 4 miles in the bank.

That sounds grim. Well done for braving it though!

I did 12.4 miles on Saturday. Was v snowy and icy which meant I had to take a few detours from my usual route (which meant I got lost) and take it gently. V fun.

I started marathon training yesterday, it went really well - A REST DAY.

Today was my first run, to work so I can go out on the ssip tonight! Was really
treacherous though on the ice and snow, especially up hill.

Have now cracked 1600 miles for the year, which I am quite pleased with as I am a little fatty plop who loves junk food.

A pleasure!

Managed 9 miles at 4pm, a bit laboured, but interesting dodging the last minute panic shoppers!

Followed by a BBQ and some fireworks, Xmas in the Hall household has officially started.

REMEMBER: The more you run, the more you can eat!!

5 miles or so for me Boxing Day, will be expecting some virtual running thread company too!

Have a great Christmas All.

8.5 miles in 1h 14m 35s - I know that's right as it says so on the Garmin that Anne bought me for Christmas!!! 8m 36s/mile, bit quicker than the 9min/mile I had planned.

I did think of a recovery run this afternoon but it's so cold here that I decided against. It's bad enough in a sheletered spot but then with the wind, it's not pleasant at all. So I played with my new toy and uploaded the data from yesterday:D I love the elevation and speed profile. I had hoped that the slower uphills would be matched by faster downhills, but I think the Garmin must have developed a fault:rolleyes:

A tale of what ought to have been - I ought to have set of earlier, I ought not to have left it until Anne was getting dinner, I ooght not to have waited until it started snowing...

2.75 sloppy miles, turned back as it was slippery and I decided that not falling over was a good idea:D

krhall
30-12-09, 09:24 AM
2.75 miles is still more than many people run in a year so bag it as a job well done!

I did 8 miles with strides yesterday along the Thames in driving rain, which wasn't too pleasant.

I think I may be developing shin splints though as I have been getting pain down both shins in the last few weeks...

Just uploaded my last 9.5 miles of the year taking me to a total of 1655 miles for the year or 233 hours of running this year.

At the time of uploading I was 292 for the year and 204 for December.

Have managed some good PB's this year and am still enjoying the feeling of accomplishment I get after each run and through sort of training two people at work.

I'm still a little fat man, but have now done 3 years of running and am looking forward to what next year may hold...maybe a duathlon or triathlon?

Well done to everyone in this thread (past and present), we have all done some great running.

Have a great night and I wish you all the very best for 2010!

We've been sledging in the hills at Church Stretton - lots of snow there, the workout is in climbing the hill again!!! No ski lifts in Shropshire!!! We were on Hope Bowdler Hill, it's really steep and you go very very fast:cool: There are no trees and no fences and it flattens out towards the bottom, so ideal for a sledge. Got any timescales Si? Once I got bacjk into it I was pleased to discover that fitness hadn't totally flown out the window, I guess you'll find the same.

No run today, been sledging again, it was terrific fun and of course I got a very wet bum, the run must be several hundred metres and I'm guessing that starting from the top you get to about 20 - 25mph, but how many times did I climb back up that darn hill:smt101

Stig
01-01-10, 08:00 PM
No timescales at all. I plan on doing three or four short runs during the week at work. 3-4 miles and each weekend to do a longer distance. Minimum of 10 miles. I aim to first get my lungs back to working properly and then build up on the stamina and speed. I'll time my runs but won't be purposefully looking for any particular time to beat. The times will be what ever they are. Ultimate aim is 800 miles for the year. Target last year was 600 and the only reason I did not achieve that was because of knees, feet and knackered trainers. I was around 16 miles short.

Im pretty much going by time exercising right now in that Im alternating running/walking spread over about 20 mins. Would it be better to get up to being able to run that 20 mins before extending the time or extend the time as I run longer sections? How much should I look at increasing by in terms of time/distance? and how long at that level before I look at increasing that?

I would like to be able to run a 5k at least by the mid point of this year - anyone any useful websites with training programs or suggestions?

i started off with run 1 minute, walk 1 minute (or something along those lines) around the block (about 1.5 miles) and then started increasing the running and decreasing the walking until i could run the whole way. and then i started running further (with the odd walking break).

you should be able to do 10k by the middle of the year.

Anyone got any suggestions/websites for someone starting running?

Previously I have got injured fairly quickly so invariably given up. This time I am a bit better clued up - I now know I under pronate so have appropriate cushioned trainers unlike my last lot which may go some way to avoiding injury. :) Im also doing 15 mins of yoga prior to the running plus the stretching before and after to minimise injury. Seems to help.

If you have done it before and been injured, then given up take it really slowly and build up.

Sarah suggests the run/walk method and I'd agree with that it really seems to have paid dividends for her. She has only just come back from a long period of injury and is now up to over 15 miles, which shows you what is possible if you do it properly.

Of course having trainers which help with your supination will also help massively.

GOOD LUCK and come back and let us know how you get on!

Hi Guys, Sarah directed me to this thread as i mentioned in the weight loss thread that i have started running.
I am planning on taking part in numerous charity runs this year and need to start running on the road.
I am running on a treadmill at my gym 3 times a week, i do a 5k run everytime i go and my best time so far is 23 mins and 39 seconds and its a comfortable pace for me too.
Sometimes if im feeling energetic i will do another 5 k run after the rest of my workout.
So my hubby bought me a fab new pair of running shoes for christmas, and now i want to get stuck into some serious training.
After reading some of the post in this thread you guys are serious runners, i can only dream to run some of the distances you guys do, so any tips would greatly be appreciated.

Welcome to the thread PurpleVamp!

You have a head start on what most of us joined this thread with so should find getting out and doing a few miles relatively easy.

Although running on pavements will be a really big change from the springy/soft treadmill so take it careful the first few times you go out and even slow down a bit if you can. You will probably ache a bit until you become accustomed to running on harder surfaces.

Oh and 5km in under 24 minutes is a really good time.

Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome, i tried a couple of 2 mile outing locally last year, and i know what you mean about the harder surface. I was amazed at how much my thighs ached the next day, there were a couple up hills involved too lol.
I am eager to getting started but at the moment were suffering with lots of snow and ice everywhere, i dont mind the cold but not really wanting to run on the snow and ice.
Hopefully it will clear in a couple of days.

And yes Sarah running 5k on a treadmill is boring, even more so when all i have to look at is a painting grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

i want to do that too. it's on my birthday
Are you bringing the cake with you ? ;) Ive mentioned it in here to guage any interest from the runners first, a half marathon in October gives everyone plenty of time to get the training in, and raise a bit of money for his charity as well.

Purplevamp - welcome to the thread:D

You have a good level of fitness already so that will help. My advice to you is to build up slowly. Don't try to do too much too soon, that's the route to certain injury and frustration. Most of all - enjoy your runs.

Cold - absolutely. I D/K where the weather forecast people get their temperatures from. At our house last night it was -6C (and that was inside:D) and at DarylB's - he lives a few miles down the road from me - it was -8C.

I'm running home tonight. Irritatingly I've left my Garmion at home so it won't add to a total that I want to keep. I need to set myself a target for the year. Is 1200 miles too little?

Stig
04-01-10, 01:42 PM
Ed my target last year was 600 miles. I fell short by about 24 miles. I had around 2 months off running due to injurys. I could have achieved it quite easily otherwise.

This year my target is 800 miles for the year, that levels out to be around 16 miles a week. That would actually be 832 miles. I think if you break it down into weeks it will give you a more realistic window to aim for. Personally I think your target is well within your capabilities.

I just done my first run of the year. 4 miles. Jeez it's cold outside.

My target for this year is 1000 miles but the main thing is to stay injury free so that will dictate the miles in the end and its bloody cold up here today as well

I mentioned it towards the back end of last year as a kind of a tribute to Hovis who was nothing less than supportive and enthusiastic to all on this thread.

Mmmm, I like the sound of this one. Might see closer to the date. I'll be running in the Edinburgh marathon in May.

right, need some advice from the Marathon veterans. Trained start of last year (and a few months at the end of 2008 for the London Marathon in 09)

I was training throughout that time and ran for almost the entire marathon ( it was a baking hot day :-) ) with a target pace of 9m 09 sec miles (4 hour marathon time).

This year I'm setting up for the Edinburgh marathon in May as I mentioned. With a year and a half of running under my belt I feel fitter and more able to increase the pace, but by how much?

I've been targetting 8m 30s pace for a few months and its been achievable without too much effort apart from windy days. I've no idea if 8m 30s is too fast or not. I was considering starting off my 18 week programme this time with 8m 30s as my target pace, with the option of maybe scaling that back if I need to.

Thoughts?

Mate I went from 4:34 to 3:43, so it is certainly possible.

You have got a 305 with HR monitor right? If that is the case then I recommend getting a copy of Advanced Marathoning http://www.amazon.co.uk/Advanced-Marathoning-Peter-Pfitzinger/dp/0736074600 and trying your best to trudge through it.

I'm a crap reader, but found the schedules (18 & 12 week) and information really helpful in understanding a bit more about running.

I also found HR training really good for helping to motivate me and giving me a bit more structure to training, it also pushed me at times.

That said after I got a few niggles I stopped HR training but had about 10-12 weeks of it under my belt, which really helped me to my sub-4 goal.

I have forgotten it all (mainly due to my poor reading), but am using the same 18 week schedule for London, haven't found the HR monitor yet though.

YOU CAN DO SUB-4 - NO PROBLEM.

I'd really like to do this, if funds and life allow - but if we think about it early enough then we should be able to do it. Would be good to get a load of bikes lining the route too!

I'm thinking of doing Edinburgh too - my plan for London is just to finish in a reasonable time, but to enjoy the day as I robbed myself of that last time. Then I might have a crack at Edinburgh as a few of my club are doing it.

It is supposed to be a really fast course too!

thanks Kev, I'm certain in my mind that I can do a 4h. I'm just not sure how to accurately choose a new pace to aim for. 8m 30s seems like a good bet but I dont really know at this stage.

I did a 4:12 at London partly due to the heat. I was on target pace up to about 20 miles before slipping a little so its certainly within reach.

I would really like to run to my current potential rather than just a 4h target. I think last year I was aiming to finish in a respectable time but without risking failure, this time I have one in the bag and want to see what I can acheive.

That's what I liked about HR training, you train to a HR band and not to a pace, in fact when I was doing it I used to write the band on my hand and set the garmin only to show distance, Average HR and Lap HR. I never knew what pace I ran until I uploaded the run. Really worked for me.

Great idea.

I have recently taken up running (end of November09) and have signed up for the Silverstone half marathon on March 14th. My training has been going really well considering a was a lazy @rse and did practically nothing befor. I did my first 8 miler last Saturday (well 8.6 to be precise ;))
Touble is my feet are killing me. I'm not sure whether this is my body getting used to me running or I've actually got myself an injury. They both hurt on the inside sdge just above the arch around the Navicular.
I also wondered if it could be that the instep of my trainer is a bit too built up. I did have my gait analysis done before I got my trainers, but is this more to get the right support for over pronation?
Anyway http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/reviews/shoes/cushioned-shoes/saucony-progrid-ride/45432.html
These are the trainers I have.
Oh And if anyone has a spare £1 for the Stroke Association I'd be most grateful!
