Oh. My. God.
What the hell have you people done to my lungs?
Well, recession has given me some unexpected free time, so I thought, lets go for a run. Haven't been running in a *long* time (like 15 years) but always used to be good at it (4 min 33 second mile) and I've remained slim and *I thought* fit. Turns out I thought wrong :D
Think I got no more than half a mile before I had to slow to a walk, then managed to jog again for another half mile or so before having to stop for five minutes and be sick. Then about a mile walk back (did managed to jog the last 200 yards just so the neighbours didn't think I was a wuss tho :D )
Christ, if you don't use it, you sure as hell lose it quick. Perhaps smoking is bad for you after all?

lol, thats funny. Keep at it, it'll get better.
Just nipped out for my first real outdoor run since the marathon. Did a fairly brisk 5 miles but it was gusting wind which made it a little tougher.
What a great feeling though when i got back.
Running the Liverpool Tunnel 10K this Sunday so looking forward to that.
Ive managed to run 3 times this week plus do a bit on my MB, actually did 4.2 miles yesterday, doesn't sound like much does I was well chuffed with that tbh :D
yay
last night on the training run with the club i got a P.B
7.3 miles in 62mins 29secs.
which was 1min 30 faster than last time.
i normaly run in the group and have a chat, but the 2 guys i normal talk to were not there, so i went off on my own.
i would like to thank metallica and prodigy on the mp3 player

So I stepped on the scales the other day. Not something I would normally do, but it was just there as I was enjoying a quiet poo! Like most blokes, I don't really care what I weigh but the shock of finding out I am now 107.4kg has spurred me into action.
One trip to Foot Traffic in Bolton later and I now have a pair of Nike Zoom Triax+ with the transmitter in it to link to my I-pod Nano.
It records pace, distance, calories and a few other bits which you can upload to the laptop.
A gimmic? Maybe, but it's an incentive to me to get running again.
Wish me luck, I may not survive the next few days ........
Just finished the Liverpool Tunnel 10K. 51 mins.
The tunnel added a nice twist to a Sunday training run, it has a fairly steep climb on the way back out towards Wallasey but managed it ok.
Time to get my feet up and watch the bike racing now :-)

Good luck with it Pete, Im injured at the minute, for a change , achilles gone and a really painful hip, think I done too much last week tbh, well done on the tunnel run Flymo, Im aiming for a 10 k in September in dealmere forest and poss the warrington half in Oct, Im dead fat as well, should be fun.
woop woop
i just ran 11 miles (1hour 43mins) not sure if the time is good, and i dont think i will do the ½ marathan in under 2 hours, which i was hoping for
it was boiling hot, and the last 2 miles slightly uphill were murder. i felt like walking a bit, and probably walked about 6 steps before running again.
4 weeks to go to the marathan, do i need to run futher than today?

Nice one Hovis, thats only 3 mins outside your target pace, you may do quicker on a cool day. Given that its 4 weeks away I would squeeze 1 further run in if you can, say 12 miles, then begin to taper off and rest. Keep reducing the distance until you run say 2 miles a couple of days before the race.
Dont forget diet in the 3 days leading up to the big day, carb loading and plenty of fluid is the key.
cool,
oh and i meant half marathan, but you probably relised that.
That's impressive Hovis.
I did about 2 miles yesterday. I'm trying to do some shorter runs a bit more frequently and build my legs up. about 7 weeks to my half. I think my training is going to be below the standard I wanted it. Still it looks like it will be a lot more than my sister will have put in.

i was unsure weather to do the half on 4th july, as i planned on doing my first in october, but i think i have proved its do-able, maybe not sub 2 hours, but we will see........ its along a canel, so fairly flat, but you have to go over bridges, which take it out of you (so i have heard?)
I just got back from a 10k. Sheesh it's hot out there. Did it in 46:26. A little disappointed if I am honest. But it was flaming hot out there.
im undicided wether to get a waterbottle and belt, or the tescos camlepack.
i dont realy drink much when out, but think in this heat i should. i dont like carrying a bottle in my hand
(will there be water stations on a ½ marathan?)

I havent done a half since 85 but I think by law, duty of care, h&s and all that they have to provide you with adequate drinks stations, although the Edinboro marathon has just got itself into trouble again for not supplying enough water at the weekend, trouble is all the faster runners got to it first and by the time the slower runners get there it was all gone apparently.

thats me forked then

It's your first mate, so my advice is take diluted squash or something in a bottle belt. Have a few goes with it first. After half a mile you won't even notice it on, mine helps with my posture too.
There are normally waterstations every 5km, but in the heat you'll want more so if you have it with you you can sip away all the way round.
Most waterstations are those ultra-thin plastic cups and as such you grab them and the water jumps out, leaving you with a dribble.

Interesting to hear about the Edinburgh Mara running out of water. The same thing happened a few years ago at the GNR. The annoying thing as a slower runner is that if they have run out of water it's usually because a lot of the faster ones take a bottle take a few glugs out of it then chuck it away. The slower ones then don't have any water available and are tripping over half full bottles.
FP, it seems that the organisers didn't provide any run-through showers or sponges etc to cool peeps off, therefore runners were taking extra bottles to pour over themselves - something that should have been anticipated, the heatwave was hardly unexpected! Hippo got to mile 3 in less than 30 minutes and they were already out of water. She rightly ponted out that, as Edinburgh is expensive at £40, she felt she had a right to expect that the madatory water (it's part of the permit conditions) would be provided. It's easy to claim that things were stolen but that should also have been anticipated too and steps taken to ensure it couldn't happen. There were other things that seemed to be poorly organised too and, apparantly, it's not the first time this has happened.
If it came to it and i was struggling I wouldnt think twice about picking up a 1/2 empty bottle and glugging the lot. I know it shouldnt have to be the case but needs must.
For a half marathon though it is definately possible to carry what you need either in hand or in belt. For the full on marathon I think thats simply too much to carry especially with gels etc.
hmmmmmm
the wolverhampton to birmigham in july has only been going for 2 years and there was loads of complaints about the first ever one, no toilets, no countdown to the finish, crapy goodybag, poor lighting through the tunnel, did not get the right waves of runners off. etc. but have said they have sorted all this, still no mention of water. its only £12 where as cardiff half is £25
i have emailed the organisers asking about water stations, and if there will be enough for everyone,

For the full on marathon I think thats simply too much to carry especially with gels etc. i would like not to carry anything, apart from chewing gum, ashma inhalour and mp3 player. but im getting a water bottle belt tomorow, so i may take that, depends if i like running with it

I was so thirsty towards the end of the Ashford 10k, that I wiped the rain water off of a car windscreen and licked my hand, as I run past!:smt078
The wiped the bonnets of two further cars which was used to cool my face a bit.
I have also put my gob under an outside tap at the side of a petrol station on a long slow sunday run when it was warm!
Carrying a bottle carrier is not a problem and will not hinder your run in anyway. You won't need it for smaller distances 10k's etc when it perhaps would hinder your speed.
Don't under estimate the affects of dehydration.
Ive got one of triangular bottles that you put your hands through, its an aerobic exerciser of sorts when full, a bloody nuisance when empty :)
i hate carrying a bottle when running
anywho, they emailed me back (after about 3 mins) saying there will be water stations ever 5k, and plenty for everyone, its limited to 1000 runners, there was 800 last year.
im realy looking forward to it now
oh, and there is a 400 meter tunnel on the route
Today I did 4.12 Miles in 27:37 for an average of 6:42 per mile pace.
just back from 11miles 1:30.......over tower bridge nice! Sitting down for some real athletic food now - POT NOODLE!

How did you get on with the water belt? Over the winter doing long distant miles I carried a water bottle but found the water got so cold it made my fingers go numb.
I went for a 5 mile run today but as I was getting back to the start point felt quite good so did another loop. Considering the run takes in a very steep hill at the end which means you are running up it on your toes, I was quite pleased with my time.
9.92 miles in 1hr 15 mins 54 sec. Gave me a minute per mile average of 7:39. Was very pleased with that. I wish I had taken water and some energy as I would probably have done a third loop.
great, i did not know it was there, so much so, i did not have a drink till about a mile from the end.
I need some inspiration, I have totally lost my way with running.
Did a 4 miler yesterday, whilst waiting for Daisy to do Judo, that was fine. I have been looking forward to a 14+ mile run today and well, simply couldn't get myself out of the door..........no run I'm a fat pudding.
Thing is I really needed to do it too as I am doing the North Downs Run next Sunday which is a super hilly 30k run, oh and it's off road too.
Come on running thread inspire me.

Come on Kev. Right, in sympathy I'm going to hit the gym in anger tomorrow. I cant run for both of us :-)
I'll be back daily to tell you how great I feel after getting out there and running so I need you to join me. You guys kept me going through my marathon training so I'm expecting to come back each day and hear how far you've run :-)
How far are we running tomorrow then?
i planned 11-12 miles for yesterday or today
and realy cant be bothered,
with 4 weeks to go to the ½ marathan i have only run a max of 11 miles once.
im going running today, i dont raely feel like it, but i am, probably 5-6 miles
whats up with you guys lately?
I'll be off to the gym in about an hour to get a quick 3 miler in for today.....catch up later to compare notes :-)
think of the way you feel as you finish, its a real positive boost.
nah, I got nothing.....was going to run last night, couldn't be bothered again......

Get yourself out there ya big girl ;) I ran on Sunday, did 5 miles in 56.10, not very far or very fast but I was dead made up with that cos I've not managed to run that distance injury free in years, then I went out this morning all excited and had a really crappy run, went off far too fast, was almost run over by some dizzy old woman who mounted the kerb next to me asking for directions, then argued with me when I told her where the road was and she wouldnt accept it even though it was literally 75 yrd away, and also somehow managed to switch off both my stopwatch and my gps, still did it in 25.20 I reckon, so not too bad after all. Btw are any of you guys on Fetch or runneresworld ?
Kev we all lose motivation, dont worry about it, it,ll come back mate.
I share your pain. I have done some runs since my complete CBA stage a few weeks ago. I've not run more than 3.5 miles though and given my half' is in 7 weeks I need to be running a lot further than that.
I would suggest that you try not to worry about it. Accept that that is the way it is at the moment. No training is going to help you for next week. Doing something to keep your joints and muscles moving etc would be good and don't eat like a pig but look at the 30k off road as a challenge to be completed, not something you need to set a record time over. Then maybe take a couple of weeks off completely or until you want to run again.
I've run 293 miles so far this year. Target is 600.

i started running late last year, but only started adding the miles up since i joined a runners forum, as theres a trainning blog built in
125miles since april. (so i would guess about 200 for the year)
back from my lunchtime run, just did a cheeky 3 miler on the treadmill. Feel bloody great after a nice shower.

Just racked up another 4 miles. :)

Well I actually made myself go for a half-&rsed run earlier, felt crap didn't enjoy it but managed 12 miles bang on. It took me 1:42 though and I was really glad to be finished though, which doesn't bode well for the North Downs Run on Sunday 30k off road and mega hilly!
Fetch is the b*ll*cks, I log all my runs on there, well at least I have so far this year minus a couple. I set myself a mileage target of 1000 miles this year and have done 652 so far this year, feels like it too. My legs feel awful.
There is an SV group on fetch too.
How are your knees holding up Si?
Stewie how's the injury?
Hovis, you are putting in much more weekly mileage than I was when I did my first half, so don't sweat it mate.
the sv group on fetch is called .orgers in case you are interested!
I'm 49 Kev, I'm always injured, nah Im ok tbh, just been inputting all my mileages into fetch, cant spot the sv group though, good to see you went out and had a go anyway
the sv group on fetch is called .orgers in case you are interested!
the what?
There is group on there consisting of some of us on here, not sure the purpose of the group but it does exist.
How are your knees holding up Si?
The knees still give me grief if I do too much. I have found if I limit my running to alternate days and no more than 6 miles, I can just about carry on running pain free. I went for a 10 mile run on Friday last week and my knees complained for the rest of the day. But the next day they were fine again. I limit the distance I do and concentrate on my times now. I can do a 6 mile run with an average mile just under the 7 minute mark. I constantly do 5 mile runs around 6:45 average. The 10 mile run I did was with an average of 7:39 miles.
I am going to attempt a 15 mile run (3 x 5 mile loop) this Friday. The biggest test I will have given my knees since I started running again. I ran yesterday but will now not run until Friday. Fingers crossed it goes well.
It would be nice to think I have just one more marathon in me. :)
I wasnt that keen on malt loaf anyway...but this has about killed off any chance of me eating it...http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/northern_ireland/8092921.stm
In other news...another 3 miles chalked up today at lunch time. Upping my pace a little now.
I love malt loaf. Bring it on. Extra meat for free.
did the 7.5 mile run with the club tonight. started off with the pack, but after about 10mins i turned round, and i was on my own, so i just kept going lol
1 hour 30 secs,
½ way round i was hoping to get it under the hour, but its still 90secs faster than my PB.
I'm off out in about an hour to start the 15 mile run.
Well I changed my route and decided to do a hilly run. I ended up doing 12.3 miles and took in some serious hills. One hill which is a mile and half of continues rise starts at mile 7. Brilliant challenge. I did the whole run in 1hr 42 min.
Very chuffed. That is all. :)
Down side is I think my knees are going to be screaming at me for the next couple of weeks. Oh well.
I managed to cut my foot before going on on my last run. That wasn't too much of a problem. but 3/4 the way round what was only a 3.5 mile run and I started to get a real pain in my lower back. Not good. Last night I went and injured my neck at the gym so can't do anything much now. The half' preparation is looking like a dogs dinner. Still not been over 3.5 miles in months and even before I can find out if the last running niggle is a serious one I have to wait to get over the crick in the neck. Aaargh.
i smashed 2 mins off my 5000meters (3miles) on saturday.

I've been there before mate. One injury after another. Wondering when the hell the start of any proper training is going to happen. But if you have to cancel the half, just make sure you book for the next one straight away to keep yourself with a target to aim for.
That's what club running does for you.
im not sure?
as i run with them on a thursday, there is 2 groups (fast and slow) they both do 7.5 miles but the slow group sets off earlier.
in the "slow" group theres about 6 of us, (the fast group about 40) the first few weeks i ran with them, as i did not know where i was going, but the last 2 weeks i have left them behind, i did plan to stop and wait for them, but i just kept going, there is 1 guy about the same pace as me, but he has not been there for 2 weeks.
just back from a 12 miler (just under) and the last mile was agony, i realy struggled, i did walk about 10 steps twice. twas mostly down hill for the first half, then uphill coming home, only slightly uphill, but with some short steepish ones thrown in.......... when i got in, i just colapsed on the sofa for 5 mins lol
my balls of my feet are hurting
1 hour 49 mins
i smashed 2 mins off my 5000meters (3miles) on saturday.
new P.B of 22.27
the offical time was 22.29, and i was 34th out of 75 ....still happy with that
i dont do every week, as im too busy, i have only done 7 since i started, but heres my times.........

That is a quality improvement mate, you must be pleased with that.
If your legs are tight and sore from running there is only one thing to do - go running!
I have just done exactly that, my legs were tight and killing me from the 30k off road North Downs Run on Sunday, but marathon training starts in vein today, so I shuffled (and I mean SHUFFLED) out of the door and starting trying to jog, 2 miles later and my warm-up complete I managed the additional HR the schedule requires (just).
All in all a solid 8 miler with NDR still in my legs, am quite happy with that........just another 17+ weeks to go now then.
That is a quality improvement mate, you must be pleased with that.
yeah, chuffed realy,
im quite shocked at what the body is capeable of, no way would i think i could run 12 miles, but i did.
i will be even more chuffed if i can do my 1st half marathon in a few weeks in under 2 hours, i think that will be a great achivment

oh god only another ten days will i have to run 10k - eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek !!!!!
Hello, back again :-) Its been a few days at least since my last confession.
Well and firmly back into the running habit again this week, just ticking off fairly solid 3 milers at the moment to raise my base fitness back up a little. Then plan to gently introduce longer weekend runs to get the distance back up again.
Another 3 miler today, just got back in. Completed in 23:30. Looking back 5 or 6 months in my running logs thats about 5 mins faster than I used to do so fairly happy with that.
Feels bloody great though after finishing one.
i've had to give it up now it's ****ed my knee right up again.
i've had to give it up now it's ****ed my knee right up again.
I'm on the verge of having to do the same but I am not going without a fight. I did a 10.5 mile run yesterday in 1hr 26mins. This took in one half mile sharp incline and another 3 mile gentle uphill straight. Today I am doing another 5 miles. Knees are complaining quite a bit. I will knock it back on the training next week and see if my knees will recover. If not, it looks like another extended period away from running.
Seems each time I get well into the running, pushing out some good miles, knees say no way.

Are you looking forward to it, well finishing it anyway?

Dont take this the wrong way Si, but why dont you knock the mileages back a bit and give yourself more of a fighting chance mate ? I know about injuries through running, Ive had the lot, runners knee, Osgood Schlatters syndrome, shin splints, achilles tendonitis, runners nipple :D fecking hurts that one, anyway all Im getting at is maybe reduce the miles a tad ? you can tell me to feck off now, its ok, loads do. ;)
After months of not runnning for various reasons, I'm back :-D
Just a little jog but I am so happy to be back.

No your quite right. I decided against the 5 miles today. My knees are giving me the dull ache which would have turned into proper pain had I done the run. I will now take a week off and get back to the four 6 mile runs I have been doing. I just get carried away with myself when in the running groove.
After months of not runnning for various reasons, I'm back :-D
Just a little jog but I am so happy to be back.
Brilliant news Sarah.

Hey, hi Sarah. Its been a while! Good to hear you're out again.
Just this second stepped in from a 3 mile run. Feel great.

welcome back:p
just done 7.5 miles tonight, so that will be 28 miles this week
Sarah - you're back! How is everything?
Sarah - you're back! How is everything?
Hey, got a 13 mile sponsored walk tonight, starting at midnight, so running will properly recommence on Monday. Plan is to get back to my previous (not amazing) fitness and do a 10k race then think about what next...
just done my last long run before the half marathan 4th july
i did 13 miles (½ marathon) in 1 hour 55mins, it had quite a few hills, nothing too steep.
my fitness is ok, although my feet and legs were hurting a bit, ok now though
Sponsored walk was great. But next time I do that distance on foot I want to be running :-D
Went for another little run this evening. Decided to build the miles back up gradually to try and avoid injury, so it was just 2 miles this evening.
At least your back on track. I am going for a run myself at lunchtime. After my over indulgence the past couple of weeks, I will be going back down to 4 mile runs for a while. Hopefully my higher distance running and hill work will have given me the edge for a better time. :)
Slowly - slowly - catchy monkey! Or at least avoid injury..........where are all the running thread residents?
I struggled getting out the door at 6:30 this morning, but managed an 8 miler with strides, I've had enough of marathon training already and I have only done a week and one day!
I really pushed the boat out and did 2.5 miles last night :-D
Well done Sarah. Onward and err forward. :)
I went for a 4 mile run yesterday. Did it in sub 7 minute pace again. BUT my knees complained, a lot. Going to time out now until next week. I have a suspicion my trainers have lost their bounce. They have only done 200 miles. :( I may have to look at something other than the Triax. May need to go trainer shopping at the weekend.

Hi, Im thinking of starting to do some running/jogging. I don't do any exercise, is it a bad idea to attempt this?

No it isn't. Just start progressively. Don't think you will be running half marathons by the end of the month. Start slow and easy. Don't be too eager to push yourself to hard to soon. Two things will happen if you do. You will find it too hard and not bother or you will give yourself an injury and not be able to anyway.
Si - I have recently bought some Nike Equalons, which are nice and bouncy. They have done exactly 135 miles and still feel fine.
Having said that I also splashed out on some Kayano 15's and they are just in another league for shock absorbsion(sp?). They have 77 miles on them and feel brand new still.
A pair of Kayano's typically last me 350 miles.
I am thinking of getting something like a pair of Nike Marathoner shoes as they are super light and might just encourage me to run on my forefoot a bit more, which would reduce the impact on my knees.
Are you still using the orthotics?

I was supposed to wear the orthotics in my trainers. I tried and they were so uncomfortable and gave me horrendous blisters. I went out for a 4 mile run and ended up running the last two miles back bear feet. It was that bad. I wear the orthotics in all my other footwear, just can not run in them. Makes having the right trainers all that much more important. I will hopefully get the chance to visit a running shop again this weekend and will see what other trainers are available for my feet. I would very much like to find a pair I can wear which are not so heavy as the Triax. But I really do need the support type trainer so quite restricted as to what I can have.
What about putting sorbothane soles in them? They are supposed to be quite good, but do increase the weight a bit too.

The issue I have is my flat feet. My flat feet are making the muscles in my knees work different to how they are supposed to. This is what is making my knee caps dislocate when running. This is what gives me the pain. The orthotic insoles I have have been specifically made for my feet to allow my muscles to work as they should and bring my knees back in to line. I think although the sorbothane soles may lessen the impact I have on my knees whilst running, they would do little to rectify the actual problem I have. Over the past couple of weeks I have been doing a considerable amount of hill running. Going up hill is fine, but for every up there has to be a down. These are steep hills so the down hill bit adds quite a lot of impact. I expect it is the extra down hill running which has caused my knees new aggravation. I will try a week of rest and attempt some flatter runs. Shame as I was really enjoying the challenge some of the hills were giving me.

Good idea, just take it easy to start off with, dont be afraid to run / walk something like 2 mins running 2 mins walking or thereabouts, you,ll soon finf out what you,re comfortable with, and dont overtrain, that will almost certainly lead to injuries, maybe aim to run every other day, little and often, you,ll find after a short time your speed will increase and so will your recovery time, but dont be tempted to over do it too soon and if you,re serious about it its worth getting decent triners form a running shop, they can give you loads of advice, good luck with it Phil.
Get decent trainers (and running socks) first if you really are serious about it Kate - could make the difference between keeping it up or not.
As Stew and Si have said really; start off with a realistic target and work slowly towards it, if you need to walk for a bit then do just that. If you think you are running too fast and will have to stop, then slow down. Most people (me included) start off far too fast.
Good luck.
Kate, sorry, I called you phil on my reply, must put me specs on when Im typing
