I went for a run with Maidstone Harriers again tonight...hopefully they will be my new club when I move.

Marine Corps ED - is that the one you did before?

Tim - Good luck mate, hope the taper has gone well.

Sarah - Be aware of it, but also remember that taper madness is all around you at the moment.

Any taper-time advice?

krhall

Take ecinacea (sp?) to ward off any colds and anti-bac gel to keep other peoples germs off you too. It does actually work!

Relax about it, you WILL get a marathon PB!

You will no doubt feel all the sorts of aches and pains you are used to feeling, but somehow in your head they become worse. So remember they are just the same ones you always get, you will know if you really have an issue!

Don't do anything silly in terms of runs now - it's too late to change anything.

Try a little run in the full kit you are wearing on 25th, wash it, then pack it away ready for the day! One less thing to panic about.

What day are do doing the expo?

Relax about it...

The best advice for sure. 80% of running a marathon is between your ears.

Actually when you think about it, unless you are a sub-3 runner, which I don't think any of us are (apologies if I am wrong) it is just another long run.

The setting is a bit different and there are more people to keep you company, but that is all, so there you go just another long run.

One piece of advice for the day is to get your shirt printed with your name front and back, if you hit a tough spell, thousands of people will see that and all you will hear, until you pick up again will be people shouting "Come on Sarah - you can do it sarah" so if you are emotional take a tissue, it choked me up a bit the first time I heard it for me and at the time I badly needed it!

It will fill you with pride, you'll puff out your chest and the tough patch will be gone!

not lost that much weight though even though i have been doing it every other day for the last 2 months but feel a lot better for it, the weight thing could be because im also doing weight lifting as well, still just under 17stone :/, but mum treated me to some proper running trainers got some Asics Kayano 16's :) soo comfy vs my £30 ordinary (squash) trainers

All my leg pains, have gone so that's good right? Wrong I have a really bad pain on the underside on my foot!

Anyway I decided to run the Paddock Wood Half this morning as my last long run before London, took it easy, stopped for a wee & after I went over on my ankle stopped again fearing the worse (all ok though) and had a nice chat on the way round, with a few fetchies and to my astonishment crossed the line in 1:39 & 42 seconds...

What happened there? If only I hadn't of stopped twice I'd of got a PB...didn't look at the Garmin the whole way round.

Foot is really, really painful now though, but curiously not whilst running.

Well just back and have got a big mug of tea sorted. The run went well, the first half was real cruisey, I had to keep slowing myself down, got a few odd looks as I sang to myself half the time. Also did some oggi-oggie-oggies underneath a tunnel or two, the dutchies joined in on the first one, on the second one I think everyone was feeling it a bit (it was around the 28km mark). I had a small jam sanwich at the 23km mark as I find I need something a little solid as well as all that sugary stuff. 25km on was slightly harder wok, but nothing too bad, although for the lowish apparent effort my HR was quite high. At around the 30km mark I saw one of the faster female runners on the other side (there were a few loops so sometimes you'd see the fast or slow guys, this lot had just passed the 40km mark) , she appeared to have loads of mud down her leg which was strange as the course is all on road. It took me a few minute in my slightly worn state to realise she had shat herself, but fair play she wasn't letting that slow her down.

I got in to a nice rhythm just gone the 30 km mark as we went round a park, then had to start pushing myself just gone the 33km mark as it appeared that stage had passsed. At the 35km drink station I slowed to a walk whilst I got an energy drink and a quick swill of water to clear the sickly taste from my mouth. Getting back on the run was hard work, it took until the 36km mark to get back in a rhythm, nice and fine, then by the 38km mark it was hard work again. The last 3 kms were a real grudge, my km spplits had increased from the 5:15-5:30 range to 6 mins. Even pushing I wasn't going any faster, there was nothing left to burn, I couldn't get my heart rate up, I was empty. So I ran on for the last couple of kilometres in a trance like state, and managed to cross the finishing line. Time wise it looks like my personal time was 3 hrs 47, which I'm pretty pleased with :D Although I did think I may sway over after the finish.

A slow hobble to the changing areaabout 800m away, put on some warmer things then I hobbled to McDonalds for a large value meal, very much needed, for the recovery process of course, salty fries mmmmmmmm. Then a half hour metro ride to my car, I struggled to stay awake and not miss my stop.

I'm now home and starting to feel semi normal. My left knee is a little sore, and I'm sure I'll have a whole world of aches and pains tomorrow, but it was worth it. Good crowds cheering people on, and loads of bands round the course to give you a boost.

Any recovery tips appreciated, I was going to go for chicken and roasted mediterranean veg tonight, along with a little red wine for medicinal purposes ;)

All you London marathon runners I'm sure you'll have a great experience in 2 weeks time.

The one thing I learnt a few weeks ago when do a 30km race is to pace/hold yourself back a bit at the start/first half so you've still fuel to burn towards the end. This is the most important (read only) real tactic I've learnt and it definitely works well from what I've seen. With no fancy GPS gear I was using a separate stop watch to time my kilometre splits, and using my HR monitor to keep track of overall time. Very useful guide to how your speed is varying with effort, the two aren't always directly proportional..

Nice one.

I was supposed to do 12 miles today, but you inspired me to go a bit further and make it a half mara distance :-)

It was really warm, well, much warmer than I'm used to so I decided to go for a run/walk strategy to see if it helped me not overheat. It seemed to work and I did it in a reasonable time (for me). I think I might go for a run/walk strategy on marathon day if it's hot.

I have been running. Although small runs and only a couple this week. I really do need to be careful how many miles I do on my knees. It is frustrating me and I am getting despondent over it. I want to do the miles but know I can't.

I had planned to do another run today, but a little accident involving a scolding hot coffee has put pay to that. Probably wont run again now until next week and then it will just be a poultry 4 miles. Think I may as well give up the running. Not really getting any benefit out of it to feel rewarded by my efforts. :(

As an aside. Foxy is still out there running. She's just normally far too busy to be on the org. Me on the other hand, far too much time...

It was a scorcher last year, the heat does make it more difficult but dont worry. If you havent already then start to fully hydrate your body, you need to be drinking 2 or 3 litres of water a day leading up to the weekend. It makes a huge difference.

I'll be watching on the TV, I'm actually excited for you all. I wish you the very best of luck, enjoy the day. You'll be in tears towards the end, guaranteed. Its a very emotional experience.

lol, 'only'. You definately need to take it into account as it will effect your running, loads of people didnt make the distance last year down to de-hydration. They have these wonderful run-through showers on the course, absolute heaven.

The difference is simply that you lose fluid faster than normal for the same effort. Have you been training with energy drinks or just water?

I think I might go for a run/walk strategy if it feels stupidly hot, I don't think that it would slow me down much. I've been trying to take advantage of the warmer days recently to get used to running in the heat.

I only ever drink lucozade (or zym/nuun and sweets) when I'm running longer distances.

Dont panic, you'll get there. The heat will certainly affect your performance but its important to maintain what you've trained to do, dont change your plan. Go at a pace you are comfortable with, hydrate in advance (start now) and take carbs on board throughout the distance.

The real hard work started at 20 miles for me, it was plain sailing up until then. All down to hydration and fuel.

I have decided I hate London Marathon! I also suspect they did it on the cheap this year, lots of penny pinching on view.

Mind you free London Pride just after mile 22, seemed like a great idea, by mile 23 the idea seemed somehow flawed. Glad it was only a half I necked!!!!:pukel::pukel:

Didn't actually puke, but came close.

Lots of people receiving med attention around the course.

I hated it the first time too, still that's my last...not a PB for me but my training has been poor.

Well, at least you once again helped anothe great cause, so you shouldn't feel to down heartened mate. I'm sure you'll be back next year depsite what you say, as you love the buzz of the runs.

No seriously, that's me done with marathons. The training is a bit selfish...

I wasn't too far off a PB, which isn't bad considering the beer stop and a few walks.

10k's and Halfs will be for me from now on!

Almost 6500 runners needed medical attention apparently...that's quite a lot out of 36,000 ish runners.

That is a lot. I remember the year I did it seeing people after 3 or 4 miles having oxygen sat on the step of an ambulance. Scared the **** out of me :(

Bit achy but came to work anyway (I'd booked the day off in case I couldn't walk). I managed going down the stairs in the car park (5 floors)and up the stairs to my office (4 floors) :-)

Had a bad stomach all last night too, think that may have had something to do with all the gels and drink en-route...especially the London Pride I stupidly drunk at just after 22 miles, but I got a massive cheer for doing it, so it was sort of worth it!

lol @ drinking London Pride. When did you do that? I don't think I could have done! I enjoyed a nice cold pint afterwards though :-D

I think I must have drunk about 2 litres of lucozade sport yesterday!!

There were people at the side of the road not long after fetch point and no one was taking it. So being desperate for something other than water or sports drink I foolishly took it, got a great cheer and it seemed like a great idea until about half a mile to a mile later...

I went to Pizza Express in Charing Cross for a pizza and a bottle of Chianti!

Yeah, me and Mrs.H are going away for our 10th wedding anniversary tomorrow am.

The funny thing is I don't even like bitter at the best of times, let alone at 22 miles into a marathon!

At one point someone at the side of the road was smoking and I felt like nicking that too, I haven't smoked for 8 years.
