Great effort Sarah. Wont be long before you've done a 10 miler, then a 12 etc etc. Its amazing how your boundaries just keep pushing further and further out.
Well done.
It's so exciting! I can't wait to up the mileage even more :D
Right, fingers crossed it looks like I have one. I did manage to reserve one and travel to collect it but good job I checked the box before leaving for home, there was a bunch of items missing. No heart rate strap, no charging cradle etc. Muppets. Last one in the store too.
So, the very kind manager offered to get one from another store and drop it at my local Halfords as he lives nearby. Hopefully collect it tomorrow or Wednesday.
£95 what a bargain...I was tempted to buy myself one because they were so cheap, but as I already have a 305 and 405 I decided to spend the money on a new lid. Running gear is much more exciting though.

So what charity is it Sarah?
You are going to love the thrill of knocking out distances that most people cannot even say without getting out of breath!!! I still get a buzz knowing I can run 26ish miles.

Yay! I got it.
They were trying to fob me off but I was having none of it. I have it charging on my desk as we speak.
Thanks for the tip.

went to see physio after work today. she reckons that there's nothing majorly wrong with me. she watched me run on a treadmill for a bit and prodded my shin (ouch) and just told me to use ibuprofen gel before and ice after running.
so i'm gonna carry on as i am and go back if i have any more probs.
planning on getting some new running shoes soon too :-)
has anyone been to the asics shop in london? looks v exciting and high tech. i've got some meetings in london soon so i think i might pop in afterwards.
5 miles this evening. 49:46, so under 10 minute miling. yay. was run walk though. have been mostly run/walking recently to be kinder to my shin (well, that's my excuse anyway)

whatever it takes Sarah. After a while you'll find things just get easier.
I'm getting to like this Garmin 305. Quite a complicated little beast so takes a bit of time to get your head around, but I'm impressed with the amount of data and detail it captures.
Saves a ton of effort getting my training up onto Fetch.

Nice one Sarah. I need to shop for new trainers myself. I have been saying that for the past few months but my last disastrous run has told me now is the time. Still injured from it so wont be running for a few days more.

yay for new trainers. i didn't wear mine for my run today, thought i should prob break then in on a few shorter runs.
9.03 miles (furthest ever) this morning @ 10:55mm pace. felt flipping great and as if i could keep on going. stuck with the run/walk thing: 9 mins run/1 min walk. and no shin probs (icing it now as a precaution though). yay. i love running :-D
i signed up for a half marathon today :-D
Excellent Sarah, bloody well done! You should be proud of yourself.
Blimey Sarah, I have only been away from this thread a few days!
Well done mate, you must have felt fantastic!
Every mile feels like a massive achievement, you should be really pleased with yourself. Bet that 10k doesn't feel like such a big deal all of a sudden.
sooo flipping pleased with myself. running mojo is at max level at the moment!
Went for a gentle 3 mile run across Berlin this evening! I ran through Checkpoint Charlie and back to my hotel, pretty cool.

Right people, your opinions please.
What time of day do you normally run? Is it straight after getting up, at lunch, or after work. I got up this morning, got dressed and did a few stretches, then went out for a run. I found it really hard and didn't enjoy it. Should I forget the morning and run after work?

When you feel like it or when you can!!
I hate morning running, although I ran to work this morning. Struggled the whole way and felt gash when I got to work. Other days it can feel great.
I like my lunchtime runs as they tend to be flat and along the thames.

What a place to run - running takes me to all sorts of places I otherwise wouldn't explore.
Lunch time runs for me during the week (just about to go :)). If not then evenings. Weekends I like to get out early as the weekend runs tend to be longer distance ones.
I am 54 miles short of my yearly target of 600 miles. Really struggling with my pace at the moment. :(. Averaging around 7:40 minute miles. Considering I was hovering around 6:15 minute mile pace earlier this year I am quite disappointed.

i struggle first thing in the morning, i'm better if i have at least an hour of being awake first. but i always used to run before work in the morning (only 3 miles though).
generally my best running time is monday evenings. no idea why.
another 6 miles in the bank :-D

Well done Sarah, was that running all the way round?
I am happy to say I have found my running mojo again. :) But oh my god I need new trainers. How many times have I said that over the past couple of months?

My best on this run has been
Distance 4.12 miles
Time 27:37
Pace 6:42

A bit of work to be done.
Ive been battering it recently in order to get my weight down and my fitness levels up before monday, the problem now is that I have slight achilles tendonitis in both achilles and generally sore legs, however I have lost nearly 18 pounds in the last 7 weeks and increased my pace as well, result.

People, I know I've picked the wrong time of year, but I really want to get into running. I decided I needed an incentive to train and so I've entered a 15 mile cross country event at the end of February. Trouble is, even now that I've got something to aim for, I'm finding it hard to motivate myself to run. I went out on Tuesday before work and didn't enjoy it and was going to go again today, but I can't find the motivation, plus I'm still a bit tender from my Tuesday run/walk/run. The immediate area to where I live is built up and has industrial estates, I not inspired to run from home. How do you lot motivate yourselves to keep getting out?

smaller, shorter term targets might help.
do you run on your own? i'm much happier listening to music when i'm running on my own.
i've started running with a couple of friends after work sometimes. we arrange in advance when we are going to run together. it's much easier if you make a commitment to someone else.

I ran wearing my Ipod the other day, I'm sure it would have been even worse without it. I ran alone as I'm really cr*p at running and wouldn't keep up with anyone else. Ibby my wife is a decent runner, but she's only around at weekends. We did a run/walk a few weekends ago over the Gritstone Edges of the Peak District, which I really enjoyed despite the fact I was in pain for a few days afterwards.
I agree with Sarah, set yourself a target to get to by a certain date that'll get you out of the door.
Your Feb target is too long and too far away to motivate you.
Go out when you feel like it and slow down a bit.
Running is best in the rain and in winter. Cross country is great too.
Set yourself a distant target and break it down into smaller time spans. For example I set myself a target this year of 600 miles. 50 miles a month. If that is too much of a big target then break it down further to weekly targets. I am obviously not suggesting you set yourself a big mileage target just the target you think is achievable for you over a period of time and then break it down so you have short term targets to aim for which will keep you motivated.
10.22 miles and soaked to the skin :-D

Bet you loved every minute of it.
I was going to do a long run yesterday, but instead decided to turn up for Kent Fitness League XC and ran that instead in the howling wind and rain on a cross country horse course, with water jumps etc.
Bloody hilly too and difficult to stay upright in places with the mud.
Loved it.

I did 5 miles yesterday with Ibby. She made me run a slower pace and only run for 5 minute intervals, interspersed with a minute or two of walking. It was on a the level and today I don't hurt! I enjoyed it. It's just what I need to get me into running. Trouble is the next couple of times I run will be by myself, so my pace will probably be too fast and it will hurt. Any suggestions how I can slow my pace when running alone?

Seriously though, you simply just have to constantly remind yourself to check your pace.

run/walk is defo the way to get into running. take a watch with you and time your runs and make sure you take walking breaks at regular intervals.

I've tried to get into running a few times in the past, I just went out and run for as long as I could manage. Usually after a few times out my shins started hurting. I need to avoid injuring myself, because if I don't get into it this time I probably won't bother trying again, especially as I'm no spring chicken!

i've started running with a girl from work who said to me that she'd like to get into running but that she'd tried before but had really gone for it and got knackered really quickly and never managed to progress. we started running together (doing run/walk) at an easy pace and chatted and gossipped along the way and last week she did 10k for the first time. i was so proud :-D

Ibby is a good runner and helps me a lot when we run together. Trouble is, I only get a chance to run with her at the weekend, and I need to run more often than that to improve. It's the motivation and self disipline to run effectively by myself that I'm struggling with.
sound like you need another running buddy or a garmin.
I just use Fetch and a stopwatch to record my progress. It works for me very well. I can see how I have run over the same distances each time I run that particular distance. Choosing a route to run I use Map-o-meter. So I know the distance I have chosen to run before I start. I have learnt to pace myself for a particular distance and degree of difficulty (hills).

Garmins are great, I love just being able to login to fetch and upload my data directly from the Garmin.
its a motivation in itself too, I've found some days when I couldnt be bothered that I go anyway just to fill the Garmin with numbers :-)
Sad I know, but I cant help myself.
Oh yeah, went to pick up my Santa suit yesterday for the Liverpool '09 Santa Dash. Should be a laugh. Keep an eye open on the TV 6th December, I'll be the one in the red suit with a white beard.
You'll stand out a mile then.

here we get to the root of the problem. you're not skint, just would rather use a stopwatch than wash dishes. At least running is free. Running can even be profitable if you are a burgler.

Hmmm food for thought. When I get my redundancy notice I can see a change in career coming on. I knew all this running would make me rich. :)

Yeah, at school in the North West we were taught how to vault a garden fence with a video player under each arm
bit blowy today
it was but I went out anyway. Just a cheeky 3 miler tonight at 8m30s/mile pace.
Beginning to build up frequency now and then increase distance through December. Just conditioning to begin a ramp up for the Edinburgh Marathon in May.
The cold dark nights are back but its nice to get out and run.

Just got a new waterproof running jacket turned up today, so I'm praying for rain in the morning to test it out!

EXCELLENT!!!
I sometimes run at lunch time with a scouser and he has a gleam in his eyes when we run past alloy wheels, apparently they were taught how to sling them over fences to their mates instead of doing the discus (sp?)

me too, just under 6 miles. ran along the prom, mentally windy running west.
I thought about it and then thought about it again and sat back down. Going out today though. :)
i think i'm getting a cold :-(
skived off lunchtime swimming and after work running.
I ran today. Didn't really want to. But you know how it is. Drag yourself into your running gear. Start plodding along and before you know it, your glad you went out. Well not me today. The whole of the 4 miles I was thinking I really am not enjoying this. I was relieved when it was finished. I am sure it has to do with my trainers and badly needing a new pair. Just can't afford it at the moment. It will have to wait until the new year. Still, only another 26 miles to reach my target for the year.

I went out at 6am this morning before work. Didn't enjoy it and found it hard on the lungs. Perhaps it was the cold air. Only did 2 miles, but it was more than enough. Glad I manage to get my backside out of bed though.
I have tried to do early morning runs but I get too tired at the end of the day. I find it makes the day too long. If I were to go for a run in the morning I would have to be up around 4.30. Not for me thanks.
I run to work occasionally, but it does mean getting up earlier and I can't run without food before so it is a bit of a mission.
Ran 9.5 miles this morning to work and there are two big hills, didn't feel great but looked at the Garmin and 8:16 m/m was the avarage which was pretty good.
I am 4 miles away from 1500 miles this year, I only put 1000 as my target.
 My target was 600.
Yes mate, but I have been marathon training and you have been injured!
Also I am slow, where as you are much faster than me.
Last year I did about 800.
And that is my target for next year. To be fair I know I can't do too much distance as my knees wont take it. A couple of months I managed close to 100 miles and my knees let me know about it.
To you all: sorry. I really mean that.
I disappeared and TBH have been too embarrassed to post. I've had a difficult few months with work issues and I've been too tired and stressed out to run, and I know I have to change that. I drink far too much and I started smoking again, which of course don't address the real issues.
So I am starting running again. Tonight. I won't get very far, I feel so unfit, but I'm going to get my running shoes out and use them.
I just checked Fetch. Febuary and March I only managed 24 and 34 miles respectively that was down to my knees. I didn't run in August at all. That was after the latest rolling down the road escapade and didn't start running again until the end of the following month. So yes I think so long as I can remain fit, 800 miles should be an achievable and realistic target for me. :)
Ed - It will be PM central if a post does not appear on this thread later informing the rest of us of a run!
Welcome back Ed, its been a while since your last confession :-)
Anybody interested in a pair of Asics Gel-Kayano 14s. Size US12/UK11. Practically brand new in box, only run in once to try them out. Ended up using a different shoe after physio advice.
PM if interested.
If they were 9.5 I'd have them off you. Could use them for skiing I suppose?
Welcome back Ed, its been a while since your last confession :-)
Yeah. It's been that sort of a year
Will you have me back - please?
Tonight I pulled on my 2090s and for the first time since July:D:D:D I got quite emotional about it - all the stress of the last 6 months just seemed to go and I had tears of happiness streaming down my face. Didn't go far - 2.5 miles - in about 23 - 25 mins, I didn't time it except by the kitchen clock. Did it non stop but I wasn't exactly going fast. I hope that the fitness will return, in due course:)
Right, about that marathon!!!! I need a goal!!!
It's great to be back and I'm so so sorry that I buggered off.

Nice one Ed, Ive lost a bit of motivation this week, had mt medical and formal interview for the Air force on monday, passed the medical just waiting to find out if they will offer me a place, as a result after two months of eating healthy and running me legs off Im having a quiet week, will be back pounding the mean streets of warrington next week I guess though, and well done on the 1500 miles Kev.

If you're feeling a bit ropey do the 7 Sarah, wow, btw you seem to have your mileages right up these days, nice one well done :D
cold hasn't made an appearance, tried that vicks first defence stuff. either that or my immune system seems to be working ok :-D
decided on 7 anyway. my legs were not happy. tight left calf and twingey right shin. was a real struggle, i got to about two and a half miles and decided to cut the run short and turn round and head home :-( but then after about 5 miles my legs started working and so i ended up doing 7.28 :-D
i love running i do.
