tbh I dont think my achilles would have stood up to the training but I was going to give it a go anyway, however I have revised my running recently, shortened my distances but increased my pace, broke thorough the 9 min mile pace for the first time in ages yesterday so may go for halfs in future

Nice one, I got rejected again this year, 4th time now, dont think Ill bother again, got a nice jacket out of though, so not all bad ;)

isn't there some sort of scheme where you are guaranteed a place if you get rejected 4(?) times?

I think it was 5 rejections and the next one is guaranteed.

Bearing in mind the sad events of the weekend, and the amount of time hovis spent in here and the enthusiasm he showed and the support he offered to us all at some point do you think we should do something in his honour ? I dont mean now cos I know its early days but I mean maybe enter next years Cardiff half as legacy to him ?

Now that my friend is a fantastic idea. I was mulling over the chances of running this year for him but the logistics just dont work out for me. I'm racing the day before, leaving for holiday the day after and its only in two weeks! Maybe a Cardiff half BananaMan team.

What a cracking idea! I would be up for that for sure.

If not dressed as bananaman then all wearing yellow running vests or something and all collecting sponsorship for the same place he was.

I reckon there would be a lot of org'ers doing it!

doing it next year would give us time to reflect on year without him and be a nice way of keeping his memory alive, I dont want to seem like its a knee jerk reaction thats why I suggested next years run, it obviously meant a lot to him, we could help his cause a bit

I am feeling very fortunate to have got a place. Debating whether or not to run for a charity.

In a funny way I feel fortunate, although I would've liked my wife to get in too as we had sort of planned to do it for our 10th Wedding anniversary which is 4 days later.

I ran for charity in 2008 as a gold bond place (minimum sponsorship £1500) which was too much pressure and I vowed never again, but this time I have paid for place so anything I raise, even if it is only £50 is money that will help a charity.

So this morning I decided to e-mail http://www.make-a-wish.org.uk/run-for-wishes/london/ they seem like a great charity, see what comes back from them.

So as soon as Abingdon is out of the way then we should be able to sign up for it.

I have managed to sort out the charity for VLM and they told me they only have 20 places for the marathon, so every private runner really helps.

I spoke to "just giving" this morning and the page Hovis was collecting on that I posted will be staying open.
Ill be running there next year as I'm starting triathlon again next year too so will be fit again.
Ill be using the Hovis page for any collections I make and will add it to his total :)

Less than two weeks away, how do you feel?

Nervous - Really Nervous! and I can't stop eating which won't help!

A month back I was in great from and really confident of doing 4 Hours, now I am not so, keep getting small but annoying niggles. It's too late now though so if it's not good enough there's always London!

Just did 7.25 with some strides, in the rain - Running doesn't get any better than that!

Just in case anyone's interested... No magic solution made. She thinks it could be related to the fact my knees hyper-extend a little, thus putting more strain on my hamstrings than is ideal. So after a thorough exam and whatnot I've got a couple of exercises to do (one a better way for me to stretch my ham's and the better way to gently train them) and going back in a week. In the mean time I can do a very little leg exercise in the gym and I got the ok to play a session of badminton in the next week.

Soon as I get paid next month (or possibly may scrape it this month), I will enter for the Scottish Marathon.

Need some new trainers. Flymo has given me some good advice. So hopefully all being well I'll have a go at some short distances to see how my knee bears up.

Sarah, let me know how you get on with Ibruprofen gel as that may be a good solution to my ankle and knee swelling that I get after any sort of exercise.

I put Biofreeze gel on my foot before I go running and it does help. I ran with a colleague at lunch time whose shins have started to hurt him. I always thought taking ibruprofen products before a run was bad (not too sure where my info was from) and then on a Sunday run with my club, they were all passing pills and gels etc about - I was amazed!

Now before a big run I always take a 600mg Ibruprofen, does help although I don't really have any issues like yours. When I last went for a sports massage he put some really cold gel on my calfs and they felt great for the next 2 hours, don't know what the stuff was?

I'm just back from an 8.5miler, which was supposed to have 3 x 6:50 - 7:10 m/m in there. I managed 2 of them and a half-arsed 400metres of one at the end. Tough run.

I also used to get 'brackets' in the crack of my @rse when I started running from friction and sweat. The first time I got it was my first HM and man it was hell. Had to get my wife to apply sudocream on it.

Now I apply a generous layer of Vaseline between them for anything over 10k.

Sudocream works for nipples too.

Tape and plasters don't work for me as I am a gorilla and they don't stick properly and then come of with a bit of sweat. I use stuff called Brave Soldier, which seems to do the trick.

Just re-read this - there are some things other people just don't need to know Kev!!!:smt053

gonna try the ibuprofen gel before next run i think, will go for a 4 miler to make a bit worthwhile.

doc didn't seem to think that i am injured as such but that the weird and uncomfortable shin feeling is due to swelling and that ibuprofen could stop the swelling. i will report back how it goes.

next stop physio and then new shoes i think. hoping that the physio might suggest suitable shoes to try.

Kev, I was given a really good exercise for this by my physio. Its like a press up.

Lie flat on your front, legs slightly apart, looking forwards. With arms in a near press up position peel the front of your body up as if you were peeling velcro, starting from your head until you can nearly straighten your arms. Try not to tense your ar$e cheeks as you do this. Up and hold for 10 secs then down. 10 reps of these four or five times a day completely sorted my back back that I'ld had for years.

I had always stretched my back forwards, stretching it backwards totally did the trick.

Yeah, me too. When I first started it definately helped but then I was still getting twinges in my back even when running. I went to the physio half way through my marathon training last year for a knee injury and while I was there mentioned my back.

Did me a world of good. First time I've been able to sleep comfortably on my back in years.

On the subject of shin splints. I seem to be suffering from it at the moment. Get it for the first 3 or 4 miles before it eases off. I blame it on not warming up properly before starting the run. I don't really have time to do warm ups when running in my lunch break. I only have an hour and that includes getting changed both before and after the run.

Well I am following an 18 week plan from a book so I am going to try and stick to that which has me doing mainly slow runs with a few strides.

I will be eating loads of carbs though next week, lucky I like Pasta.

Hopefully my back gets a bit better, it felt better after 5 miles at lunch.

I'm getting really nervous though, on the brightside though my legs feel quite fresh today (first time for a while!).

I remember when I did London in 2008, in my last week I really slowed down on the bike on my way to work and got ultra superstitious which I'm not normally. Have been thinking about using the banger next week instead of the bike though.

Not too bad if it includes a flight, I'm sure you could book your own flight cheaper though. If I was going to the trouble of running the NY marathon I would be making a short holiday of it too. Got my 2010 marathon lined up now so would be looking for 2011.

I remember saying I was only going to do one marathon....

Good luck for Abingdon Kev.

I start my training tomorrow. 3 miles, I'd say 'piece of pi$s', it won't be though. I predict 1 mile in I'll want to give up. Gotta fight that though.

Flymo has given me a link to a training program which looks achievable.

Give it time, you'll likely find that the first few miles are the hardest and then it gets easier. I found that the first 3 miles feel a little difficult when the distance increases but after that you get into your stride and things get easier.

It doesnt take that long to get used to it.

Plowsie don't woory about it if you have to walk/run you are just coming back from injury, so the last thing you need is to push too hard and injure yourself more.

Run slowly, so it feels more slow than you think you should be running.

I said "NEVER AGAIN", then the next morning sat on the internet trying to get a place for the following year.

Yeah but then my main worry is time taken. Isn't that something I need to be focussing on?

Ignore time for now mate and get your legs in the right shape and build stamina.

Once you are used to running again then build speed work in.

Dont even take a stopwatch mate, you dont want any extra pressure when you start and dont worry about run/ walking, main thing is to build up your stamina, just take it easy and enjoy it :)
