View Full Version : The running thread!
Sorry to hear it, no fun being injured, had em all meself, now if I feel a twinge or something I just back off, good luck though you,ll be out running before you know it :)
I have been running a few times a week, no more than 4 miles each run with a wonderfully steep and pretty long hill. Finding it hard to get back into it though... I know once I am out and running I feel great but the motivation is not there to get out there more.
often the hardest part of a run is the first few steps, I did the Humber bridhe a couple of weeks ago and despite doing it in 2:29:16 Im totally motivated to beat it now, problem is I reckon Im going to injure meself if I dont calm down
I guess sometimes motivation gets the better of you and you train harder. How was the Humber Bridge? Hilly?

I sure hope so. Im missing it badly, and every-time i see someone out running i get that stab of jealousy lol.
Yeah it was actually, it started uphill for a couple of miles gentle climb to the bridge, then at the 4 mile mark there was a steep climb for about 300 mtrs then at 8 miles 'cardiac hill' I had to walk a couple of times, temp hit 82 degs at one point then the final mile up the bridge was really hard work, there were two runners collapsed in front of me and ambulances had to be called, all in all pretty undulating but Id do it again :D btw 2002 entered less thah 1500 finished

You,ll be out again before you know it, dont get down hearted
2002 entered only 1500 finished - wow, that must be a tough race.
Hello all BTW.
SOunds gruelling Stewie and you want to do it again!!!
Oh yeah, just to beat the time I did last if nothing else, there was one lad there in CS95 trousers, boots and a full bergen, we set off together and I never saw him again, he must have seriously fit

Your doing just fine. :) Far better than me.
I just got up, walked out the door with my kit to go get changed and put my bag in the car and came back in.
Im feeling a bit cba meself today, but got a run planned for later

It's getting out there despite the cba which keeps you going. Unfortunately I am pathetic and lazy.

Now that is crazy and yes he must have been seriously fit.
Do you have many hills close to you to include in your run for training?

I can't believe you made it out to the car... at least it is a start ;)

That is the worst thing that stab of jealousy making you miss it more, it also makes you want to get out there sooner than you should...

Nothing special locally, but bored of running the same old routes anyway may have to venture further afield and find a nice hill to have a play on, apparently hill running is one of the best training methods for runners there is

Indeed and also Fartlek training I believe is a good training method for runners.
I don't like hill running but have one in my early morning run. As soon as I start running up it I slow right down and with it being so steep feel like I am barely running. I can imagine that if someone was walking up the hill they would be beside me all the way :), however, at 05:30am there isn't really anyone around luckily enough.
I can't believe you made it out to the car... at least it is a start ;)
Well I don't want to over stretch myself now do I? And I actually did it TWICE. Once getting it out the car to the office and another trek back to the car to put it back in the boot. Can't say I ain't trying now.
Another run done this morning. I think after coming on here it spurred me on to drag myself out of bed at stupid o'clock...
I think I did too much yesterday so thought I would box clever this morning. I left the sports kit firmly in the boot of the car. I'll start again next week. Honest.
I am loving running at the moment, its the first time I have only trained in the form of running for any duration and not ended up with sore knees and ankles. Normally I do a mix of bike and crosstrainer.
I even managed 18km the other day, granted it was over 2 hours whilst watching the F1 but I averaged 9kph which is good for me.
I can't get to grips with the tredmill thing. I have to be out on the road. Rain, shine, wind or snow. It has to be outside covering real miles. Maybe I should get a tredmill. Might make me a bit more likely to do a run when I have these cba moments.
Ive got a new training programme which means having to do tempo work or intervals, cant do it on the road but can programme a treadmill and do it on that, although I would much rather be out on the mean streets of suuny warington ;)
How do you find it on the treadmill? I get pretty bored and haven't been on one for quite a while.
Oh, we have our own personal Red Arrows display here at the Defence Academy right now, it is quite spectacular. They are right in front of our building :-)
tbh I dont like the treadmill but I find I can keep a more constant pace on one than I can on the road, I tried a bit of fartlek running this morning, just been out and did 5 miles but need a bit more practise I reckon, Red arrows eh ? bit special arent they and dont they know it ? ;)
Have you planned your own programme or do you just see how you feel as to what you will do at that moment in time?
Yes Red Arrows - pics are here http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?p=2320124#post2320124

I use this http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/index.htm but dont follow it religously, if it says do 3 miles and I feel fine at the 3 Ill just carry on, mostly I just listen to my body and do what it says, I dont usually do less though just tailor my speed, my theory is thay any exercise is better than no excercise , I get a load of info off fetch as well, you on fetch ?
There's a group on Fetch for us .orgers. :)
Yeah I know, love fetch, its got a good forum going on with loads of useful threads, and probably the best free training diary there is.
Just been looking at the group, who's ?

I get bored incredibly easy, if I get the right selection of music on my ipod I'm fine though.
Luckily the treadmills at the gym I go to have big ass TV's built into them so I can watch Dave or some other similarily interesting channel. If topgear or real A&E is on for an hour I can quite easily stick on the treadmill for the full hour and do 8km or 9km.

Yes indeed any exercise is better than no exercise. It is good if you know the roads and can carry on past the mileage you have set yourself when you feel fine. No not on Fetch but will take a look thank you Stewie.

I know quite a lot of people can run with Ipods and tv's on, I find it really puts me off. If I run to music I have to have a beat that suits my pace. If it speeds up or slows down I tend to do the same.
Good going staying on the treadmill for an hour though G :p

I really had to force myself to get out of the house to go for a run this morning. I could so easily have not gone, even when dressed and at the door. However I am pleased I did :D
And you looked like you were enjoying yourself as I drove past.
Good one Foxy, Im having a rest today, ran 4 times this week already, got a short 3 miler for the morning when I finish work and a 6 miler for sun morning, thing is Ill be in work til possibly 02.30 am on sun morning so Ill go out and do it then, nice and quiet ;)
Stewie, yes it is good to have rest days. However, on your rest days, are you good and keep them as rest days or do you occasionally get the urge to go out there. I cannot imagine running at 02:30!!! You must be crazy and yes it will certainly be quiet :p.
Defo, Im sat here now wanting to go out right now  thing is I work perm nights 4 on 4 off, its my first night back in tonight and sat night/sun morning is an easy night so I sometimes go out after work, that way I can get to bed after my run and Ive got the rest of the day to myself when I get up
I had a little accident at the weekend (not on my bike) and couldn't run. However, I went out this morning and beat my last time by 1 min 30 secs which I was really happy about :p.

Well done on your run :) :)
I WILL get back at there at some stage.
He he fortunately for me you didn't see my little accident Si otherwise you would still be laughing now :-P.
Another run done, 4 miles at lunch. My arm hurt a little towards the end but I feel good now

Dont worry about it, I recently went full length on a footpath next to a set lights with about 20 cars waiting for the lights to change, I went down like a ton of bricks but being the numpty I am, I shot back up again like Usain Bolt and carried on like nothing had happened, at least till I was out of sight of the cars  Im off running atm, knacked me calf and having a rest.

Is that how you knackered your calf? ;). Did you go running at 02:30?? I still couldn't imagine running at that time in the morning...

No didnt go out that early in the end, the job I was doing was cancelled so I ended getting home a lot earlier and Id already run that day so didnt bother, I am working tomorrow night though so depending on what time I get back... ;) think Ive overtrained tbh so been resting my calf, be out again soon though.

The only thing with injury is having the patience to let yourself heal. I will quite happily tell people to rest but when I have an injury I totally ignore what I tell others despite the fact I might make it worse.
So will you be healed before you next go running?
Yeah I should be, just when I thought I was going to be fine Ive now got man flu, proper man flu, lucky to be alive really ;) should be out again a day or two with any luck.
Just back from an early morning run with Foxy. What's going on? I'm on holiday and getting up at 5.30 every morning to go for a run.
Enjoyed it though. :)
Hooray, Foxy's back :-D
My post-mara running has been rubbish. I was (am?) injured and have only been doing really short runs and not that many of them.
I need to start running a bit further soon in training for the Great South Run which is in October. I also fancy a half mara in October. Cardiff anyone?
should be doing Cardiff again, work permitting. Good course but costs a fortune to park the car
Cardiffs right in the middle of my 4 days off, its also the last race Hovis did, I may well do it. not run for nearly a fortnight now, calf was just healing nicely when I nearly succumbed to man flu, proper man flu, lucky to be here tbh.....;)

Ahhhh thats brilliant. You have a running thread on a motorbike. Who needs Runners World - eh? Much as I'd love to spend 3 days doing it, I really can't be bothered to read the past 355 pages - What runningg do you mostly do? Road / trail / fell - half / full / ultra?
Oh, and Hello. I'm Tom.
Hi Tom. I think most of us are all road runners. Some do do full, others do half and the likes of me with knackered knees just do what we can. :)

Thats cool. I'm mostly road. Tend to do a few of my training runs on trails / tracks when I can, but the majority ends up being on roads.
When I say training it's a very loose term - Started last summer to 'get off the sofa and stop eating crisps' and have managed 4 halfs since. Tried a full but only managed to 18 miles as it was a very hot day and I was doing a local one with little training and no crowd.
Hi Tom, welcome in mate, I do mostly road stuff, not particulatly quick or anything, Think flymo's a bit of an athelete though
Went out at half five this morning for a run with the lovely Foxy. Going again tomorrow morning. :)

Just got some kayano 16s. Muuuuuch happier running :)
Just noticed a heart rate monitor for the nike +. If it's half as good as the pedometer, it should be a great bit of kit.

Hey Sarah, I hope your injury isn't too bad. Sounds like you have a bug for long distance goals to achieve . Have you entered the Great South Run?
I have been running a few mornings a week, starting to get more into it and getting better. I have had to work on my stride and still working on my hill running.
Hi Tom, sounds like a good way to get off the sofa. Are you still eating crisps? ;) I run mostly on the road and sometimes along the Canal which is lovely. I am doing shorter runs at the moment and would like to get some longer ones in.

All the time. But it doesn't matter if I do a bit of running.
TBH i've been a bit on the lazy side over the summer and I'm really feeling it, but getting motivated to ramp it up again for Wolves and Brum half's. Plus they're supposedly starting a ParkRun near me, so thats another reason to get up early on a Sunday.

Park Run = Free 5km weekly timed races in parks around the country.
By runners, for runners. They look really good, but they've always been too far away from me to bother going to.
Hope theres not rules about this, but try www.parkrun.com (http://www.parkrun.com) see if theres a local one.
Whats a ParkRun?Its a cheaper veriosn of park and ride. You park your car the run to the shops

Thanks it looks great, sadly though its for UK only, might have to see if there is something like that around here.
I have decided that once the summer is over I am going to try to start running, I have found some tape for my ankle that I am hoping will mean that my old injury will be supported.
I am looking at the couch to 5k program at the moment with interest.

It has loads of programs like that on it, and you can tailor it to your needs :) £15 very well spent.

Well i have been out of the running lark since Mid July due to a heel/foot injury caused by my stupidity.
Turns out i have Plantar Faciitis and a Heel Spur on the back of my left heel.
Thankfully it can be helped by stretching exercises and rest. Heel supports now in place to help me too and i can get back into my exercise regime .
Here is to next week and a fresh start.

Run along the prom then swim in the sea on my lunchbreak today :-D

I have had a half-arsed try at running pose, but you have to have the time and patience for it and effectively start running from scratch, due to the way it teaches you to run using different muscles etc.
I know a lot of fetchies who have done it after injury to great effect.
Are you trying it?
7755matt
14-08-10, 07:50 AM
Yeah, being new to the whole trying to run properly thing I thought Id give it a go. Only heard about it through Fetch. As I am effectively starting from scratch Ive bookd some coaching. Im hoping the injury prevention side of it will help
June and july were bad months for me. due to work commitments i didnt get much running in , now its time to get the miles in and work way up the fetch ladder.
It's been a while due to a lot of post marathon CBA, but I just got out and did my longest run since April, seemed like I was out for 3 hours! Was actually only out for 6.6 miles and 52 mins, feel sodding knackered now though!
I hope to be posting in this thread again on Friday, but my recent CBA's tell me this may not happen...
I ran 181 miles in Jan and 7 in May!!!
My running has taken a serious nose dive. After getting back in the groove before the AR I have not run since then. Apart from a run on Tuesday. I did something like 10 miles. Total lack of preparation. Did not drink enough or eat enough during the day. I ran after work. Got back (just) and felt terrible. Lisa had to feed me dextrous tablets and water before I could function again. My knees were killing me. :(
Have now decided I am no longer a runner. I have been battling with my knees now for so long and have made the decision it's time to accept defeat. Even the smaller runs affect my knees. So it's time for a change. I have decided to get back to mountain biking. Time to get the bike out and hit those hills. To try and remain positive I'll get a bit of a upper body work out as well as keep the vascular exercise going. There's a good off road section for mountain bikes on my way home from work. So from now on I'll probably have the bike on the back of the car and stop off on the way home for a good work out.
So basically, except for the odd weekend run with Foxy, I won't be running anymore. which also means I won't really be contributing to this thread all that often either.
Damn my knees. :(
I ran 181 miles in Jan and 7 in May!!!
Wow, best Ive managed is 70 in June, struggling a bit at the minute, bizzarrely my speeds are increasing from this time last year but my weight is increasing also, I look like jocky wilson in running tights :D

Day off work today so managed to get out for a 10 miler, fantastic run allong the river bank only spoilt by being bitten by a litle jack russel dog. I am used to dogs charging up to me when out running but its the first time i have been bitten.
My reaction at the time was to kick the dog as hard as possible (inflicting further injury on my toes) then having a word with the owner who was most appologetic.
any way had a shower & took the bike out for a ride.
Ill be going out shortly, not ran for a week due to work etc so going for a nice easy bimble.
