Just spotted (and subscribed to) this thread. Great to read about what others are doing running wise. So far this year I've done two half marathons but have still to come in under two hours :(. Have another coming up in two weeks so am going to see if I can push hard enough to finish under 2 hours. If someone had told me 12 months ago I'd be running 13 miles in one go I would have laughed in their faces!

Saturday gone I did a 'Motivate 25' challenge - 10K run, 2K kayak, 13K cycle and 3K 'victory lap'. Was great fun - main aim was to have a laugh as much as complete it in any particular time. The run was particularly hilly (read tough), the kayak was great fun (was 2 up and we zig zigged along so prob did 3K! :)), the cycle was a doddle - well used to doing 60/70K cycles, but the 3K lap was pretty tough - think I was starting to run out of energy at that stage.

After my half marathon in two weeks, I've a 10K and a 15K trail run to look forward to. Main reason I sign up for these things is that it gets me off the sofa if I know I have to train and prepare for something! Gotta say I love running - tough on the legs and feet, but I love the simplicity of it. No bike, no gear (bar runners) - just you and the ground underneath and the distance you want to cover. Mind you, I sometimes wish I was anywhere else when in the middle of a race and things are feeling tough!!:smt120 But it'd be no fun if there wasn't a decent challenge in it....

I was running up a very steep hill and breathing very hard. I woman in a car decides I would be the perfect person to give her some directions. Needless to say I ignored her and carried on running. The other day a car drove past me as I was about to cross the road on a run. As he went past he thought it would be a good idea to slam his brakes on to ask me for directions. I ran into the back of his car. Idiot.

Yes, still running, although very limited.

Go for a 25k run this weekend? Foxy has invited me on the run but having only done limited amount of runs over the past few couple of months and only 3 or 4 miles each time, not sure I should tackle such a long distance. What do you guys think?

Quit the whining and get on with it or try and talk my way out of it. :)

My lad did this a couple of years ago, the 'Hell up North' in Delamere Forest with minimal training - just a few 20k runs. He really, really enjoyed it and wants to do another 'for a laugh'. Oh to be young again. Jon is one of them lucky buggers who retains his fitness well, does nothing for months then decides to run to work (15 miles) or up Tryfan for 'some exercise'.

He has hyper-extension in his knees which limits what he does. He also has knackered shoulders from rugby / kayaking. He's gonna be a mess when he's my age.

I'm back on the running again. 2 miles three times a week (will start upping it again after next week).

As I've stopped drinking by-and-large (2 bottles of becks last night- my only booze in the last 2 weeks), I'm feeling super motivated.

That and the chinese tea I drink when training, I've lost about 6 pounds in the last 3 weeks. Nice.

Thinking of entering the Breakfast Run next year- 8.2 miles not 16!!

what/where is the breakfast run?

thedonal
22-10-10, 07:17 PM
Kingston-Upon-Thames- 27th March. It's a run from the market place, round the high-streets, over the bridge and down to Hampton Court along the towpath, then down to the Scilly Isles (near Esher) and straight back up to Kingston again. 2 loops for the 16 miles...

http://www.humanrace.co.uk/events/run/breakfast-run-2011

They do the same run, billed as the Kingston Running Festival, around October time.

I'm not sure if I'll get as far as running 8 miles by then, but It'll give me a goal. last time (6 years ago!) I did it in 1 hour 27. Slowed to walking regularly after 4 miles, but glad I attempted it!!

I'm really chuffed though- got my 2 miles down to 18:28 tonight- after 20:52 a week ago Monday. Not bad for a Friday!! Even with a short walk- though at that pace, I understand why!

I have been running relatively regularly but haven't been doing any long runs. I did the Great South Run on Sunday (and didn't die) which was my longest run since April so I thought maybe a half would be ok for this weekend and good practice for Hellrunner.

Do it!

I did a half on Sunday after bugger all training. And although was half an hour slower than my fastest time it still only took me a couple of days to recover.

Think of it this way....even very slowly its only 2.5 hours, and you'll probably only be in pain for the last hour of that.

With my new training programme I'm going to have to do some short runs in the morning before going to work.

So what's the best option, up and run straight away?
Eat some breakfast and then try and run?
Iron a shirt and sort a few things before running but eat after?

Any advice/opinions welcome, it's just a 5km run for now.

Well I just got up and went (after attempting a PRP but failing), I made sure I warmed up and stretched properly, first ten minutes were a bit of a struggle but once into it and awake I was fine.

Don't know about the lady Luna glides, but the mens ones made me want to roll my feet outwards. The sole curves round at the edge and I felt like I was gonna fall over. Prefer asics stratus/nimbus.

Are you sure you're a neutral runner? Maybe go to a running shop and have you gait analysed? That way you'll get to try them on a treadmill.

I am having terrible issues with my feet when running at the moment. Went for a 10 miler a while back and could hardly walk afterward due to pain in my arches. Getting well hacked off. Foxy is still running and putting me to shame.

Sadly I dont know anywhere locally that offers this service, so I am kind of guessing when it comes to shoes :(

I have fallen arches so my logic was that this shoe may support my arch and force me to land on the outside of my foot.

I´ve just brought a roll of KT tape as well to support my old ankle injury to see if this helps with the beginning stages of running.

Hmmmm, I had lunar glides offered to me when I did the analysis and i have a very neutral pronation. If you have fallen arches it may be worth looking at shoes for over pronators, or even inserts. A lot of manufacturers websites will show you what kind of gait the shoes are designed for....if you cab ever get a treadmill test it would confirm which ones you need.

Yeah me too Tim, always on the ankle bone side, my kayanos had worn right through the liner and down to carcass of the shoe over an area about the size of a 50p piece, the shop reckoned the kayanos were causing too much movement in my heel area and recomended the wave riders instead, we,ll see.

Yep, I use all the lase holes, and can't do the shoes up any tighter without causing discomfort. I think I do have a bit of a sticky out heel.

As for the Flyrocs - what do they have to do with speed? Any muppet such as myself can buy them and they're great for offroad/adventure racing without being an all out fell running type of shoe.

Are you threading the lace through itself at the top to lock your heel into the shoe?

Tim in Belgium
17-11-10, 01:29 PM
Yep, the Mizuno's are designed with a lace lock in mind.

This has never caused me any issues once I've "broken" new shoes in, but does mean a slight break in period, I wouldn't do anything long distance on a brand new pair of shoes.
