I can imagine there are often things that go unnoticed by the owner. I hit the ground hard enough the shear two ligaments in a split second. The bike weighed more than me, it must have hit pretty hard too.
The fairing on the opposite side to impact shattered.

insurance companies writing off vehicles for little! It looks to be 'crash' damage, as opposed to a stolen/recovered bike.
Look at this bike (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353577390741?hash=item5252dad295:g:MmgAAOSwwEtgye4 6), up for sale that would be circa 15K. Only damage in the picture is r/h side ending head cover (head looks fine), r/h side engine protector missing & l/h side engine protector has grazing.
The rest of it looks immaculate still. How is there 8k worth of damage there, even at BMW labour you'd struggle to be at 4K getting them to repair/replace those parts.
The winning bidder can't have thought there was much wrong if they paid £10,120 for it !
ps not saying they were right to buy it.

For 10k it's either going to be parted or the visible damage fixed then exported and sold abroad with no mention of a drop in it's new history.
It's all about risk, just imagine the liability if a frame gave out and the bike ploughed into say a bus stop with half a dozen people in it, reports show that the frame was weakened in the previous crash but the insurance company gave it an Ok good to ride with a new engine cover installed.............
Write it off then sell it to a dealer and let them shoulder the risk of returning it to the road/parting it out
If your 3rd party, well thats a different story lol

It's a bargain at that price. They've got a good bike for 3k less than it should be (including 2K of repairs)

It says it's a Cat N in the description. The insurance have declared the bike safe for repair/parts. If the frame is damaged it's a parts only bike and cannot be put back on the road as is (new frame & numbers needed).

Would be £14k from a BMW dealer.. but that would come with 2 years warranty, BMW customer service and Europewide recovery cover for 2 years. If it's a CAT N I wouldn't say that was a bargain. By the time it's repaired it will be near BMW price but without the warranty and backup and it'll have the CAT N on the V5 reducing it's value too.

Rain. I've been getting out for half an hour a time all day trying to cut the top of my neighbours unkempt laurel hedge that he never prunes. When I get too wet I come back in and I'm getting fed up of it... So far it's not very straight either, which is annoying too. Still, the bits I've done look so much better!

I did something similar (with a substance we will NOT talk about) mine would turn on (the power switch wasn't on the keyboard) but I would get double strikes on many keys.
I took the keyboard out of the laptop, washed it with water, sprayed it with contact cleaner and let it dry in the sun for several hours. That was 9 years ago and it's still working (a Toshiba Satellite).

Sugar is the killer - in a previous life I maintained Telecom equipment and the associated switchboards. A swbd wet with water there was a chance it could dry out ok. Sweet coffee no chance, if you got it working a few weeks later complainants of sticky keys would be heard.
Take the battery out and remove the case if you can. Look to see what has been contaminated and clean the well if you can. A pencil eraser can be useful. Look for any on board fuses and check. Retry if it still does not work consider removing the hard disc and get it copied. What can happen is migration between the circuit board tracks so do not leave it wet. If that fails Seekers course cold be worth trying or a visit to a computer shop. Best of luck

Just to clarify since words are hard. I washed the keyboard not the whole laptop.

It's the oxidisation of the components that does it, think the sugar speeds up that process (or maybe it's the acid - coke seems to be the worst). They sell a liquid that you can douse your machine in after it gets wet (make it more wet? if you dare) that covers the components in a protective layer. Apparently turning it straight off and covering it in that is your best chance. You have to have some in the house though...
Think they were on dragons den with a pouch of the stuff designed for submerging wetted phones in.

Could that be silicone spray, disperses moisture and leaves a protective layer ?!
wrap it in a pillow case and put it in a bag of rice/kitty litter for a week. if it suddenly died then its fubar.

Thanks for the suggestions - wine is both acidic and sugary, so doubly bad. I was going to flush it through with IPA (switch cleaner, not beer) but wanted to disconnect the battery first ... it looks like I was too late. They're like little pillow now.

Welcome to the frustrations of chargers being blocked by fossil cars.
One of the funniest things I've seen at a service station was about three years ago at Warwick Services on the M40. At that time it only had 3 or 4 charging stations, and one of the bays was taken up by a non plug-in Prius. The owner obviously thought the bays were reserved for ANY type of electric car ...

'This has sparked concerns that young people, who have suffered from unemployment or wage reductions during the COVID-19 crisis, may end up paying more for state pensions of older citizens.' This is a quote about triple lock state pension and somebody saying it has got to go.
I don't remember anybody being concerned that I was paying for older citizens' pensions when I was young !
They are playing young off against the old to try and justify abandoning the triple lock , fiddling with the figures or altering the wording so they don't have to include the average wage increase part.
Regardless of the rights or wrongs of the triple lock, it's just a classic example of the government's cavalier attitude (which comes from the top). A law or a pledge or a principle is absolute .................... until it isn't.
Remember the 0.7% GDP foreign aid statutory obligation ?
We simply cannot trust anything they say any more.

They've been making noises about getting rid of triple lock all through the Johnson administration and Theresa May before him. Just when the triple lock is biting to make an impact for those whose only income is the state pension, the Tories decide that having warm and fed pensioners is a bad thing.

Exactly, words mean whatever they want them to mean , or they will find some excuse saying circumstances have changed to try and justify why they don't have to stick to their pledges !

Thank goodness I made other arrangements with a private pension. Another thing that annoyed me is the increase in pension age for women. My wife is younger than me and can't draw her pension until she is 67.

I'm happy that women's pension age is the same as for men. Equality in all things.
I don't understand the WASPI movement's beef entirely, but if its proved (and I think it may have been?) they've been wronged fair enough their pension age should not move. However, my view is that the equalisation of men's and women's state pensions has been widely advertised as has the move to increase state pension age - so saying you didn't know is not a valid argument.
My sister in law was affected and "didn't know" but admitted to not listening or reading to pensions news for years. She never reads official letters either. She was about 6 months away from 60 when she found out at a family meal where retirement came up, it was a hell of a shock to her she had to work a few more years.

I did not start recording Lucan in time so we're using it to try and watch episode one and it will NOT let us watch the last quarter of an hour. Resetting everything has no effect so flip it - well have to try again tomorrow.
Piece of utter garbage.
Channel 4 app is like that too. It runs the adverts and then nothing...

The WASPI thing was the result of an EU directive in 1978 that ordered member countries to equal up the social security payments received by men and women - the main one being pensions, so it took UK from 1978 till about 1995 to actually implement the law in UK to even up the pension ages starting in 2010, before that women had been 'more than equal' with pension at 60 and on average a longer life than blokes.....

central heating installers..
i got my house central heating done about 4 years ago. over the last week i have been ripping out the back bedroom and bathroom and as such i had to remove and instate the rads. to my surprise the installers have for some reason put one radiator flow and return on the return feed and the other radiator flow and return on the flow feed.
i'm now paranoid about the whole system. the word cowboys comes to mind.

I had my plastic pipes replaced with 15mm copper piping below first floor and oxygen barrier 15mm minimum diameter within first floor, as 10mm microbore plastic pipes were clogging up. Heating engineers didn't put timber battens under edges of access panels they cut out of chipboard flooring so floor creaks whenever we walk over these panels. ( apart from the odd 2 I got to myself to rectify !)

I have been wearing varifocal glasses from Optical Express for years
( changed every 2 years usually apart from recently )and find them good.
There must be something wrong with the prescription for the lenses Boots gave you I think if they don't work .
Years ago I started with reading glasses, then went on to bifocals which were awkward ,and at one point had another pair for mid range computer screen work. Then went on to varifocals which were brilliant for all uses. They are not cheap though and I can't quite understand why they have about 3 different types and you have to buy the dearest to get the best periferal vision. I noticed when I got the cheapest prescription varifocal lenses for my sunglasses that it seemed a bit different riding the motorcycle - the optician explained that I would have to be turning my head further from side to side because the lenses didn't give the best periferal vision . I got the best varifocal lenses for both pairs of my latest glasses (about £620 but I chose one pair of £150 frames by mistake !)
Varifocal glasses. Boots got me to try some for the glasses I've just got. Waited half a year for an appointment and then weeks to get the glasses. Not getting on with them at all. Not cheap. Useless. Some people get on with them others don't. I've had them for about 15 years and I'm wondering if I'll bother with them in the future. I'm short sighted so I often find it easier just take them off for close-up work. The real problem with them is that they only work if you're looking down (reading a book) or tipping your head back to bring the subject into focus (not always practical). My current glasses are useless for using with my PC monitor or laptop as the distance is somewhere in between reading and distance, I can tip my head back to get focus but it's a very narrow sweet spot and not comfortable.
I might go for single focus next time, one pair for distance and another for PC/reading.

This is what I'm finding. Far distance is amazing. Very very close is amazing. I got them to use for work though and I can't focus at a distance the computer sits at or on any of my mechanical work or wheel building.
So they're an expensive waste of time. I'm back to using the cheap supermarket glasses I've been surviving with for the last half a year.

Such as DIY or working on something like the car/bike. Anything that's at arms length really. I've been painting fascia boards on the house this week and it was easier without glasses.
I've now attached granny cords to an old pair of specs when doing odd jobs, so they're always close to (plonking them on my head is okay but they usually fall off).

I need glasses for distance, though as I get older my near vision limit is gradually getting further away. I used to be able to see very close up but not any more.
It is essential to talk through your requirements in detail with them when ordering, you need to understand a lot more than might first appear.
I went for a 2-for-1 setup with Speccysavers, and they did me some true varifocals covering the whole range (fine), but I also got some bifocals with distance and mid-range (rather than reading) which I described to them for riding the bike. The low bit is for arms length, where the bike clocks and satnav are.
I actually measured the distance when seated on the bike and gave them this when discussing it. For the bike they are absolutely perfect. Note that you also have to be very careful selecting the transition level. I actually marked the line on my old specs (on masking tape) where I wanted the transition, which corresponds to the top of the instruments. Everything above that is effectively single vision distance (i.e. all the road).
When using the bifocals I just look over the top for close up reading etc, which I can do quite happily without specs. The varifocals must start the progression from distance low enough down so that you don't end up having to tilt your head all the time.
My first vari's progression point were a touch too high and I couldn't see clearly where I was treading without tilting my head down, but I learnt and made sure the next pair were as I wanted. It does mean the vari part can end up quite narrow so a relatively tall lens works best I find.
When they sort out the transition point, you need to be standing and looking straight ahead, and decide at what distance on the floor you need to start departing from "infinity" (it's probably a lot closer than you think, typically only 2 or 3m at most).

This might be a waste of time as I'm not too clever...but could you test by turning off that dodgy rad? If others are chained off only one flow (return) pipe further down the line they'd stay cold I think. Once you've done that test you could put the cowboy radiator back on and try turn off others closer to the boiler (if you know roughly which way it goes) and see if they prevent your yeehaw rad turning on (or others).
I bet they just got to the end of the day and saw a shortcut so it'll only be that one

there is a flow and two returns on system. they had the bathroom on the flow only and the bedroom on the return only.. furkin muppets.
would not be so bad if they had taken a branch off the main feeds for both ends of the rad but the cowboys used a single feed then a T which fed both ends of the rad from the T.

Filled up the Street Triple on the way to the MOT today and as it's not run properly for a couple of months decided to treat it to some premium. Filled up then realised I was paying £1.50 per litre! Then looked at the fuel rating and saw it was E5. Premium E5? The other pump said E10 so guessed the E10 must be rolling out already. Commented on it when I went to pay and they replied that their first E10 delivery hadn't arrived yet and would be later in the week. So I asked what was was in the pump marked E10. Apparentlyt it's still E5. So I asked what is in the E5 pumps. It's E5 too. So I paid out £1.50 per litre for something I could have got out of the pump next to it for £1.36 a litre. They didn't seem to understand my annoyance and just commented "well you got E5 which is what you paid for".

They didn't seem to understand my annoyance and just commented "well you got E5 which is what you paid for".
it may be E5 but if its premium then it will be high octane E5.
why are people complaining about 5% and now/soon 10% ethanol is beyond me. you should be complaining about the content of benzene more than anything.
dont race cars and such like run on methanol? dont hear them complaining.
the only downside to ethanol in fuel is ever so slightly less MPG and lack of long term storage unless you use a stabiliser.

I'm not complaining about ethanol. Just that I would have bought the E10 (that was actually still E5 in the pump) for £1.36 a litre instead of the E5 that I bought at £1.50 per litre. Exactly the same fuel in both pumps. Two different prices.

Personally Id be a cnut about it and drop a complaint to hell to the chain head office and trading standards about them misrepresenting what's for sale and effectively tricking you into paying a premium for what's readily available.

I get annoyed by this but from a different angle. "Super" is 97+RON whereas Regular is 95RON (technically 95-97RON is "Premium" in legislative terms). Ethanol content in the mix is separate consideration. You've still bought higher octane (better?) petrol even though it has same ethanol %age, so it can still reasonably command a higher price. That's what happened before the latest change in law. (Bear in mind E5 is up to 5% and E10 is up to 10% so E5 is also E10 by default. Also, 0% ethanol is still both E5 and E10!:smt100)
However, I don't need the higher octane. What I want is 95RON (that suits the engine design) but low ethanol. I'd pay a little more for it too, but surely it's reasonable to expect it to be cheaper than full "Super" prices, since it's 'lower quality' fuel? But it seems the legislators won't allow that. (Unfortunately the statute is made up of the original 1999 bill and many subsequent amendment bills so deciphering it to understand current law is challenging - I'm still trying to get my head around it but it seems that Premium 95RON now has to be minimum 5.5% ethanol ) So instead I guess we'll see the growth of many folk buying E5 97+RON (and maybe DIY extracting any ethanol to leave 95ishRON E0) or the growth of small volume suppliers exempt from the full Regs. Quite a faff either way.
Well, I suppose the sale of all the more expensive fuel will help with tax revenues!
... decided to treat it to some premium. ...
it may be E5 but if its premium then it will be high octane E5.
On terminology:
- From the Motor Fuel (Composition and Content) Regulations 1999, "'Petrol' has the same meaning as in Article 2(1) of the Directive" (referring to EU Directive 98/70/EC).
- From the Motor Fuel (Composition and Content) and Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships) (Amendment) Regulations 2010, Reg 3(7), "...“super unleaded petrol” means petrol that has (a) a research octane number of not less than 97 measured in accordance with the test method specified in Annex I of the Directive ..."
- From the Motor Fuel (Composition and Content) and the Biofuel (Labelling) (Amendment) Regulations 2021, "...“premium 95 grade petrol” means petrol that has a research octane number of at least 95 but less than 97 ..."
So "Premium" unleaded is 'low' octane 95-97RON petrol, "Super" unleaded is 'high' octane 97+RON petrol

I had the same experience filling up the bike today, don't want E10 and don't need 97 octane petrol, but 95 octane was £1.37 a litre and E10, E5 was 97 octane at £1.50 a litre. So I filled up with E5 and reluctantly paid the extra.A rip off !
I am not convinced E10 isn't more likely to damage some components even if they say modern machines can run on it, and if you have to use more of it because fuel consumption is higher how good environmentally is that ?

Corn lobby will not rest until fuel is 100% ethanol, and then they will want to add it to milk and baby food etc....

Very interesting. Sounds about right and explains a lot.(But ethanol doesn't improve mpg !)
What is supposed to be the benefit to the environment of ethanol anyway ?

The 'benefit' is that the plants it is made from absorb CO2 while growing, so the CO2 emitted while burning it doesn't count :smt102

I don't know to be honest, but sounds like the kind of thing big oil will like. I was pointing out the 'benefit' being sold of E10 is a reduced CO2 footprint, but that its actually BS. The CO2 coming out of your tailpipe is the same, no matter what you burn.

Absolutely. It's the usual 'making the maths work' so it appears as though it's better, but nothing has actually changed . . . .
the less dino juice we use in every day vehicles the more will be available for air, sea and farm. so if we add 10% ethanol then we save 3%ish dino juice. put that on a global scale and we might just keep tractors and such going for another 50 years over and above the estimate..
crude oil.... without it we go back to the 1800's until we find a more suitable alternative that the big boys can charge us for.

I am reading a book and it is describing living conditions in late 1700s through 1800's. It makes grim reading, whales being slaughtered wholesale for their oil to make lamp and lubricating oil ( whale oil much better than the 'tallow' which was rendered animal fat that stank and smoked when used for candles and lamps ). Houses were dark and cold in those days, and the ceilings and walls ( and peoples lungs ) covered with oily soot. The along came coal gas, burned as naked flames in houses which filled the places with carbon monoxide and killed many people. When oil was discovered we firstly got kerosene ( paraffin ) for heating and for lamps, which burned bright and relatively clean, and better lubricating oils. Many of the trees in Britain had been chopped down for heating and making charcoal. Crude oil has actually helped nature a lot, as without it the planet would be a treeless barren place and humans shivering in dark homes, eating uncooked food. Add to that that many of the things we take for granted these days made from fossil fuels ( roads, medicines, fertilisers, paints, plastics, oils - the list is pretty long) and our lives would still be pretty miserable ( and shorter ) without good old Hydrocarbons from the ground.

It is not the ethanol that improves MPG ( it actually reduces MPG because lower energy content than the petrol that is being polluted by it ) but vehicle MPG has been increasing with more efficient engines and fuel injection etc ( you could say 'in spite of ethanol' ).
1950's built terraced houses. the external walls are superb and built with good mortar and brick with a cavity. the internals are shocking. there must have been a shortage of nails as nothing in my house is fixed to anything else properly e.g. the internal walls. you cant buy timber as its old imperial along with the plasterbaord so nothing modern fits.
if i had the cash i would rip all the walls out and start again but the price of materials is shocking especially wood.....
good news is i like the old ogee and bead facings/skirting but could not find the one i wanted (back rebate on bead) until i went along to one of my local suppliers and found a pile on the bottom rack that was all dusty.. 90mt for £109 delivered ROFL its usually £5.49mt. a little dust down and its like new :-)

This is pretty much my experience of the Travelodge at Preston Park, Brighton, last night. Utterly exhausted after helping The Monkey move house (see the Smile thread) I zonked out as soon as we turned in only to be woken at 2:30 am by a large group of pizzed up wonkers just back from their lads birthday weekend. Despite earplugs (always carry them on hotel stays) I could not get back to sleep. Felt so ill this morning as a consequence. Thankfully Lady Poppy wasn't feeling quite as bad and did the drive back.
Sounds like your morons went to the same How to be a Selfish Git course as mine Kenzie, so I have every sympathy for you. It's like people have forgotten how to be civil or behave themselves.

Just had to do a Covid19 Lateral Flow Test as one of my daughters has just this evening tested positive, and I was with her on Thursday. Deeply unpleasant procedure. Looks like a negative result but I need to wait the full 30 minutes.
Fortunately I and both of my girls are double jabbed.
Fingers crossed you're okay.

My wife and eldest both currently have Covid. Thankfully they are both ok.
It has hit my missus harder than my son, but she's double jabbed and seems to be getting better the last few days. My daughter contracted it 10 days ago.
No idea where from as they are off school and haven't been out much as my wife works from home. She was fine after a couple of days.
So the fact my other son had it back in Dec, means I'm the only one in our household who hasn't had it. Yet!
I'm getting sick of daily lateral flow tests - my missus is making me do them.
My Gripe - The number of bloody phone calls from Track and Trace. As everyone in the house is a close contact of everyone else.
They must have rung about 8 times now. And you have to go through the same bull**** read out speech/questions again and again.
I get they need to do it, but when they have already rung and gone though it with an adult, surely their system should be able to say that they don't need to then speak to the same adult and do it for the other 4 people in the house. Especially when they are under 10. FFS.
On other matters, if you are double jabbed, legally you don't have to isolate for 10 days. But they would like you to. My wife and son are by the way.
My son is gutted as he's fed up being at home and wanted to go to school to see his mates (13).
Part of me would like to get it, as I could do with 10 days away from work, especially as I've now been told I have to wear a bloody mask all day whilst sat at my desk.
But seeing how it hit my missus, I think I'd rather not.
But I do like the idea of being sat in my garden playing with pup.

Glad to hear you're OK Gary - hope your daughter is getting on alright with it.
One of my work colleagues was in a similar situation to you SG a few months ago - hope your two feel better soon. I also wonder when I'm going to get it as I'm sure it will strike at some point... Trouble is, as I work from home, as soon as I'm a bit better I'd be expected to log on again so no 10 day rest would be likely for me.
My wife and eldest both currently have Coivd. Thankfully they are both ok.
I hope they get over it quickly. I have started taking vitamin D supplements which seems to have helped a little (might be wishful thinking :) )
Have they lost their sense of smell and things often now taste weird? It can take 3 to 12 weeks for that to recover, apparently.

I was once camping in a frame tent with my wife and 2 young children on a site at Roy Bridge in Scotland where a group of vintage/veteran motorcyclists were staying and one of them decided to ride around the tents on his motorbike howling and yelping about 1 o'clock in the morning. Very scary.

They have recently put one up on my way to work, between Ascot & Wentworth. No pre warning signs, and there was no issues with the road, so i assume its an 'emergency' one for utilities of some sort. The sort of emergency which means they're not there 24/7 working, you know
