It’s a well known fact Tom that 11 out of 4 (11/4) can’t do fractions .

It's a well known fact, that I missed out on the fraction part of the maths syllabus due to being over by a bus. I've never needed to know how to multiply or divide fractions since I left school.

Hedge trimming. It bugs me that neighbours plant fir trees and then trim their side only. This hedge must be 10ft tall as well. Loads of work and mess for muggings.

Under the tall trees act - or whatever - a tall tree is 2m, only 6ft6in.
If you're taking action, don't delay or next year's nesting season will stop anything happening until this time next year at the earliest :(

My neighbours trimmed their side of my conifers then chucked all the cutting in to my garden without even saying anything. I was a bit annoyed about that.

" from RHS: " Can I chuck the hedge trimmings over into my neighbour’s garden?
No. Not unless they have accepted the offer of them and even then they may wish them to be returned in a more reasonable way. "

Hedge trimmings (not so much conifers) make very good compost if shredded first. I've been trimming hedges for the last three weeks over evenings and weekends, two of which belong to the neighbours. Helped them do the tops too even though it's all over their side. On to the last one now, a laurel which needs to be capped down a bit as it's grown madly over the last few years. Since buying a decent pole trimmer the cutting has been easy - the worst bit now is gathering up the trimmings to stuff them through the shredder...

Thankfully I have nice varieties of hedge plant that the wildlife benefits from: golden privet and hawthorn (both planted by me), the aforementioned privet and beech, both of which have several birds nests in them as they're more mature. Maintaining them all does get in the way of riding time though!

My B-I-L planted leylandii along his boundary 'because he wanted a quick hedge' - I explained that leylandii do not stop growing when they reach 6 foot and would go up to 40 foot. He planted them anyway and after a few years and 25 foot his neigbour complained they were blocking his light and invited B-I-L round to see his garden (or not as it turned out) - the foliage had gone about 6 foot over the fence line and turned his garden into a dark tunnel. Cost my BIL best part of a grand to get them cut down and taken away. The other problem is if you ever trim conifers back to brown needles they never green up again, and another one is that conifers are very flammable ( I can remember kids going round setting fire to conifer hedges).

I haven't read the law but always understood that you can cut back anything overhanging your property but must ask the owner if they want the cuttings and offer them the chance, not just lob them over the fence.
I have a nice fairly large ash tree which overhangs the neighbour's garden. Fortunately they like the tree, but every year I cut it back to keep it in check, and always ask them how much they want off it. Some neighbours are not so co-operative.

It grows right under their phone line too so have to make sure that it doesn't interfere with the cable. I didn't plant the tree either as I'd never have put it there in the first place.

Got home, stopped in front of garage. Pushed bike in garage. Whilst closing the door noticed a couple of drop of oil on the drive. Take a look under the lower fairing. Balls quite a mess. Decide to remove lower fairing to take a better look. Stupid Ali fairing bolts both shear off from the radiator mount. No biggie. Until I notice the side nearest me is now dripping water from around the corroded radiator mount. Bollix.
She clocked 52,000 miles on the way home. Looks like she might be on her last legs.

Anyone ever successful sealed a minor leak in a rad and what did you use?

Hoping the jet wash at work will help locate the oil leak. Unless it blasts more corrosion off. Then I be looking for a box of matches and a rag to stuff in the tank.

These things always happen when you're skint.
Oh wait. I'm always skint...

I've used Radweld for a short while, but eventually replaced the radiator (but that was on a car). I don't know what the price is for a new rad.

At that mileage for the oil I would check the hoses to and from the oil cooler. Not that expensive to do yourself, maybe £130ish at a decent non-dealer mechanic

Thanks Redones. Just looked for hoses, ebay fairly useless unless I get one from USA.
Fowlers they cost about £170.00 for the pair. Ouch.

I'll take a better look tomorrow.

Have a good look for the oil leak. If it is a hose I would replace just the one not the pair. I'm sure I'll be 'corrected' in a minute, but as you drop the oil every 4,000 miles anyway it's not a major faff of you have to go back to do the other hose at a later date as you will need to change oil at some point. If I remember correctly one of the hoses is more prone to corrosion sure to the shape, route and material.

For the radiator I have heard of someone using a Belzona product, but I think they were just showing off (look at their website to see some really nifty repair materials - fancy a plastic engine block that actually works?)

ophic
02-08-18, 08:14 AM
If it's the oil cooler hose it'll be the longer one with the silly bit of rubber on it. It rots away under the rubber. These are like hen's teeth.

As you can probably guess, I had this issue. I bought a whole 2nd hand replacement oil cooler off ebay with both hoses intact as it was cheaper than trying to source just the hose - about £40 I seem to remember.

Burnt the back of my hand looking for the leak once I got to work..... Grrr - sodding bike.
And yeah it looks like it could be the long hose, it's fairly fubar.

Gonna give it a good clean at lunch to really get to see. It's covered in ****e right now.

Doubley so.

In Germany you are not allowed to mow your lawn on a Sunday, maybe even on a Saturday.

Shops close Saturday afternoons and supermarkets don't open on Sunday. Nice regulations that mean families spend time together.

Sometimes I think we'd be better off with regulations like this

As for weekends, when a retired neighborhood decides to start a noisy job in the garden when he's had all week to do it......

I heard that in Germany power tools are banned on Sunday. So you get at least one day of peace in the garden.

Of course this is less of an issue during colder months when people are less likely to be outside enjoying the garden.

Martin, have a look at the starter relay. The points inside sometimes burn out, so the relay clicks when you press the starter button but it doesn't pass current to the starter motor. Carefully short across the terminals on the relay and make sure the starter motor spins. If it does and the relay clicks when you press the starter button then it's a dead relay. This is exactly what happened to mine while we were in Scotland a couple of weeks back. M&P/Busters have replacements for about 13 quid.

Let's back it up a bit and think. The simple and sensible idea, based on industrialization concepts, is that no-one performs tasks that they haven't been trained for and assessed as capable. Makes perfect sense.

So you'd think that they'd simply train the right people to do the jobs they need to. This is where it falls down. The concept isn't flawed - just the way "we" do it. We're either so stretched for staff that they can't take time off for additional training, or the whole thing has just got bogged down in administrative overhead. Or - probably the most likely, is that no-one at the right level of decision making has any interest in making one person capable of doing the jobs of three. Lastly, if you even achieve that goal, you might well just end up with more unemployment overall.

I mean everyone needs feeding regardless of whether they work or not. Therefore industrial efficiency in the workplace has limited returns.

I've had a few clutch lever switches fail in the 15 years I've been on SVs. Current sv the switch failed so I bypassed it years agoStrange isn't it. I had two SV's for 15 years and never had a problem. The only time i had to bypass the switch was when i dropped the bike and broke the clutch lever.

God damn left shoulder muscle hurting like hell, it's always been a problem, but last couple of weeks it's been especially bad. Had an unscheduled appointment with my osteopath yesterday, but today it's just as bad. :-( :-(

My Dad has just passed away, he was 93. A gentle man and a gentleman - he could never understand why people were so horrible to each other, I wish we all could have lived in his world, it sounded like a wonderful place. I'm going to miss you Dad.

Being kind to others seems to be a thing of the past so it's even more sad to lose one of the good guys.

What a lovely dry warm summer.

MOT day today. Ride the bike to the garage and walk home is the plan.

Pouring with rain this morning. [emoji853]

Such a 21st century problem.

The wife bought a new toaster and threw out the old one. Nothing wrong with it, simply a 2 slice and she wanted a 4 slice toaster.

But the bread doesn't fit in it. I have to cut half an inch off in order for a slice to fit. Her method is to turn the bread half way through which leaves the ends under done or burnt in the middle.

So where is the fault? Breville making undersized toasters or Warburtons making oversized bread?

Probably Warburton making 'bread' in a way that bears no relation to bread making, whipping so much air in to the dough and creating an overly tall loaf of gunk.

I'll get off my soapbox later.

I'm going to have to send my exhaust back to the factory for repair [emoji853] (lifetime warranty [emoji16])
But that means I'm going to need to fit a temporary replacement.

Thinking of spending £30 on a Sodial. It would only have to be on the bike for a couple of weeks. Has anyone any experience of these?

i have this (https://ie.russellhobbs.com/russell-hobbs-products/toasters/polished-stainless-steel-toasters/classic-4-slice-toaster-13767) SS 4 slice which has been superb. if the bread is too tall you can lay it on its side in the toaster. only fault is that the toaster dont do really thick stuff like bagels.

i use warburtons toastie bread and it fits fine.

if you want a toaster that should last a lifetime buy a Dualit.

I had to have my beloved Iggle cat put to sleep on Monday. He was only 9 but had been battling kidney failure for a few years. In fact the vet gave him a few months to a year to live about 3 1/2 years ago and was amazed he lasted as long as he did, especially as right up until this week you'd never have guessed how poorly he was apart from being terribly thin.

When the time came I called the vet to do a home visit. This meant me, Stu, Iggle and his bro Piggle could spend his last few hours together having cuddles in the garden. In the end it was very peaceful and instead of the nurse holding him and checking his heart rate as he went to sleep I did it myself.

I miss him terribly, the house is so quiet without him. Piggle is off his food and although he knows his brother has gone he is mourning him. We'll decide in a few weeks if we want to adopt another cat to keep Piggle company.

Sorry to hear that LPH. It's a terrible time, but it will have been the right thing. You just have to carry on and get through it. You get used to the differences, but they never really go away.

Several.....

Two nights of sleeping badly, feeling almost hungover from lack of sleep.

Looking after a friends dog, Sooty, who has been something of a nightmare this time. Keeps crapping in the house, about 6 -7 times since Tuesday. Final straw came last night when she crapped again on the landing and I stepped in it with bare feet in the dark on my way to the toilet.

Skimbleshanks, our cat, has absconded because we have Sooty in the house and we're all missing him.

My friend has messaged to say that her car has broken down and she can't get back till Tuesday instead of tomorrow. I have to find some way of having Sooty looked after somewhere else as I can't cope with her in the house any more.

And I've gone from having almost no work over the last few weeks to having more than I know what to do with this week (of all weeks) :help:
