View Full Version : Gripe of the day - What is yours?
I just noticed that the parking light on the bike was on and had been since I parked up 24 hours ago. Now I have to half dismantle the bike to get at the battery to recharge it. Bummer.
Just to rub salt in the wound, this morning I discovered that the bolt holding one of the side panels on has welded itself to the frame so I can't get at the battery to charge it.

I'd just like to congratulate all the people who took part in the "Drive like a Geriatric" event on my way to work this morning.
I'd also like to point out that driving at 40mph whatever the speed limit says does not exempt you from using your mirrors and indicators.
I should have taken the bike!

I have noticed that quite a few people who drive at 40 in 60 limits will continue to drive at 40 when they get into 30 and 20 limits - maybe their eyes are so bad they can't see the speed limit signs.
A bit of a toss up with them and BMW drivers though - for all the money they pay for their German staff cars the mirrors and the indicators seem very unreliable, but the accelerator works just fine (and the smoky Diesel exhaust). There were 3 of us in a line in a 30 limit the other day, me behind and BMW in the middle, double white lines through a village when the BMW decided that village or not, school sign or no school sign he was gonna floor it, he shot off around the front car like a scalded cat doing at least 60, where are the speed cameras when you really need them ??
Why is it that in London they just shut off sections of the city without any kind of diversions put in place? The radio announced that The Mall would be shut - fine, don't take that one - but all surrounding roads were as well, which they failed to mention.
I got completely lost. I'm not gonna post my track because it's far too embarrassing. I'd also like to thank google maps for listening to my eventual plaintive plea of "OK google please direct me to work".
As I didn't have my phone mount with me, I have to say google's spoken directions are actually really good.
Oh and I overtook a lady scooter rider and then nicked the last spot in the parking bay. It wasn't very gentlemanly and I'm really sorry - I wasn't really thinking straight by that point.

Hear bloody hear, working just on the Mall, and parking opposite Downing St. - and having no building notices sent to us for ages left me with no choice but to scoot out early after my night shift to stand any chance of getting home - particularly annoying was the fact that they started to close roads before the supposed closure time of 0630!

clowncil tax (rates) bill just arrived. As usual less for more Not only has the the county element gone up by 4%. They hide it by saying it is 2% and there is a new 2% line item for "Social care". But
Local council is 2%. err ok. until next line item special expenses 2% another new item!!! and a new £30 to take my garden waste
but then it gets silly
Parish council :-63.5% increase... WTF! and add to that a further 6% special expenses.
The only honesty I can see is the fire authority who have not increased their element. Nor added a "special" expense.
I know Maggies "Community charge" was not popular. But why when there are 4 working adults living here. Do I get this bill. Far better to send a bill to all. Only when all pay will people actually think about who they vote for and their implications of their spending policies on the individuals payments. Why should home owners be a cash cow for the political whims of failed wantabee politicians?
Far better to send a bill to all.
Only working people pay it as those on benefits get it paid for them with council tax benefit. It's charged but they pay them the same amount as benefit. Crazy.
Those who rent houses have to pay it as well, not just homeowners.
So why not just bung it on income tax and forget about this separate system entirely.

They could send a bill to everyone in the household but that would increase costs to you.
Or, you could of course state that the charges are being passed on to the household fairly by the way of digs going up.
As you can see I don't have any kids and if I did they'd already be down the pit.

Sorry to hear that LPH. We went though that with my partners father. It took us 6 months to clear his bungalow and prepare it for sale as we were both working, he lived in Hunstanton and we live south of Norwich. Digs going up. FFS if I suggested coughing up dig money there would be a revolt. I suppose that would at least be something as at present they do sweet FA. And not kids, graduates in their 30s who came back home as it is cheaper AKA free, compare to fending for themselves. We never charged whilst they were in education. And they don't see why we should start now.
I buy the food, cook it, wash the pots and get moaned at if they do not have immediate access to washer dryer etc. Eldest daughter has banned me from the bathroom before she goes to work as I take too long and leave it smelly. My fault of course as I should have bought a house with multiple bathrooms.

Never a great day when you get a phone call, and she says her Mac has simply died.

Effing disaster of a morning. Rushing around getting ready to go to Newtown for a morning of patronising b0110cks on a "speed awareness course". Trying to ensure my girls are ready for school as I needed to leave before they went for their bus.
Kitted up, went out, started the bike, accidentally hit the kill switch, engine stopped and locked the starter motor. Nothing but clicks from the solenoid. Tried to bump it down the hill in second gear but the road was so wet the wheel just slid all the way. Had to push the bike, with a neighbour's assistance back up the hill and shove it back in the garage. Now a sweaty mess, ran back indoors, changed out of bike kit and into normal clothes, grab the few bits and pieces I need, out to the car and away, late! Stuck behind a school bus. In Newtown with 5 minutes to go, stuck in the traffic, had a panic as I thought I'd left my license (paper version) and passport (needed for photographic verification of id) at home, sitting at the traffic lights shouting at the world before I discovered I hadn't left them behind. Arrive at the venue, walk in to ask at reception where the class is happening to be told it's not on. I'm a ****ing week ****ing early. Bloodybuggery********.

If you were stationery when he hit you I'm inclined to understand why he might have been a bit miffed.
There's an easy way to remember the etiquette around filtering. There are car lanes, and there are bike lanes. The bike lanes are easy to spot because they have a nice dotted white line painted in them. Cars borrow the bike lane sometimes in order to move from one car lane to another, and bikes occasionally use some of the car lane to cross between their lanes, but neither ever stops in the lane belonging to the other. This way they can co-exist and never upset one another.
One of the things I sometimes pick candidates up on when testing them is when they filter between two lines of traffic up to a roundabout and then just when they get to the front they pull across and "take control" of a lane. What they have effectively done is pushed in because by doing so they are preventing the car behind them from taking the next available opportunity onto the roundabout.
Bikers get away with filtering because we are using space not being used by others and with skilful planning and anticipation we can generally emerge onto roundabouts or other junctions without stopping. If we do have to stop we should certainly be planning on doing so in a position where we won't impeded those we have just overtaken.

RH, I get your point but the shoe on the other foot I'm sure I'd still be in the wrong.
I was 'borrowing' the car lane to move from one bike lane to another, thanks to someone sitting in their car on the white line. I got in front to swap lanes and was moving when he pulled forward and hit me.
I think he either wasn't paying attention to the road in front of him (Heaven forbid anyone uses a phone when driving) or it was deliberate. Working on the reverse, if I rode into the car sitting on the white line I'm sure I would have been in the wrong irrespective of whether I was miffed or not.
It's only the third time in 20 years of riding that I've been tapped by a car when riding. The other two did it with their middle finger up; which was similar to what I did as I rode away thinking that they lost the battle. (immature and not a good response, but might cause them to rethink).
Reminds me of when I interrupted someone hurling racist abuse and holding up the traffic. (They found I could out accelerate their car to the next traffic jam and that their mirror was removable)

Because Lord's is seen as quintessentially British we are considered at high risk so security is already oppressive. This will only make it worse.

The "News" is no longer the News, it's an entertainment show and they will deliver what people demand. I think the way they report these events akin to rubber necking the scene of a crash, but the public seem to have this thirst for morbid detail and even if it is nothing more than speculation or opinion they lap it up. I find it all very disappointing.

You & me both. I suppose its because we were used to the BBC news being presented in a formal fashion, not this entertainment format.
LPH,the reason you get bolshy and just get on with your day is because if you don't go to work, you don't get paid !!!

Or rather, what they think people demand. But then that becomes "normal" to the people watching, so they then expect it. Chicken and egg. In my mind they're at least 50% responsible because they influence as well as deliver.
Bikers get away with filtering because we are using space not being used by others and with skilful planning and anticipation we can generally emerge onto roundabouts or other junctions without stopping. If we do have to stop we should certainly be planning on doing so in a position where we won't impeded those we have just overtaken.
Completely irrelevant in London as what actually happens is cyclists filter to the front en masse, fill up the cycle boxes if provided, but forget to change to a low gear. Then everyone waits for them while they heave away on their pedals like an overloaded steam train.

Around us (Shoreditch) the cycles only have one gear. Of course, it doesn't matter as they don't stop either.

And how does that make you feel? My point exactly! Just because it's London doesn't mean you have to chuck out your principals.
If you're going to filter, with or without a motor, then don't do anything that is going to hold up the traffic you have just passed. It's just plain good manners.

When I cycled I saw starting from traffic lights as a challenge. See how far you can get before cars catch up. A cycle in low gear cant half out accelerate a car.

Buuuullll craaaapp! I would squash the **** out of you :p

I don't. Doesn't matter where I position my bike, in the absence of slow cyclists, I'm out of the way before the car starts moving. I do ride slower bikes differently. I also keep out of the way if i think something slow is gonna hold me up. Hence the complaint.
It is a different situation with so many cyclists though. If you can't fit through a gap, you should get out of the way of narrower vehicles. Most considerate car drivers seem to respect this as well. Motorcyclists are probably the worst offenders here.

Beautiful day and I don't have to go to work.
Adjusted the chain, changed the oil, a quick check over and all ready for the first ride of the year..... except the brake light isn't working from the front lever. :(
I took it out and it looks like a dodgy switch. First ride on hold until I can get a new part. :( :(

Give it a good dousing with switch cleaner. Squirt it into the switch.

I gave that a go, and sanded the two metal prongs, which were green and a bit corroded at the bottom where they join the switch. Still no joy.
I've a new one on order. Already posted out first class so hopefully will arrive today.

Fixed my wife's iPad, just after ordering a replacement tablet for her birthday. At least i can return the replacement.
Found a screw in my front tyre. Stupid me pulled it out - shoulda left it in and ridden it to the shop as it was holding pressure. Now I'll have to pay to get it picked up.
I suppose it could have deflated disastrously or left me stranded in the middle of London somewhere. At least I noticed it whilst at home. Also the tyre needed replacing anyway. I'll call this one evens.

The cyclist that at 3 sets of lights, despite having the full width of the bay in front of the advanced stop line, decides at every set of lights to sit at 45 degrees across the front of my bike. Holding me up, the car behind, and having everyone honking because i refuse to run him over. Better situational awareness please.
